Absolutely fabulous rendition of a great novel
Fabrizio Gifuni gives one of the best reading I have ever listened to and I have listened to many. His rendition of the many regional Italian accents (Roman, Neapolitan ,Veneto, etc) are just miraculous . I have loved the book and read it many years ago, so I tried the spoken version and was surprised how much Mr Gifuni adds to the written pages. What a performance! Its brilliance does justice to a tremendously intelligent and entertaining novel which is a true classic of modern Italian literature.

    Terrible narrator
What would have made Public Anatomy better?
Different narrator. I have listened to many, many books, and he was one of the very worst.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Eli. One of the good guys
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The Southern accent was beyond phony and detracted from the story.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    Disappointment due to narration
    Any additional comments?
Overall, a pretty good medical thriller if you can get past the narration.

    Publisher's Summary:
Gideon Clarke is a man on a quest. He is out to prove to the world, as his father tried before him, that the world-champion Chicago Cubs traveled to Onamata, Iowa, in the summer of 1908 for an exhibition game against all-stars from the Iowa Baseball Confederacy, an amateur league. The game, which was to be short, pleasant, and the Cubs thought, one-sided, turned into a titanic battle of over 2,000 innings, played mostly in the pouring rain. This game is not on the record books. No one remembers it or the Confederacy. But Gideon Clarke knows it happened, and he is determined to set the record straight.
Like in his previous novel, Shoeless Joe, which was the basis for the movie Field of Dreams, Kinsella creates a loving mixture of baseball, life and fantasy, in a world where dreams don't have to come true, because they have a validity all their own (Publishers Weekly).

Kinsella hits another fantastic home run with this wild magic baseball tale!
Kinsella is a master story teller and specializes in baseball and indigenous American themes. Field of Dreams is outdone in its fantasy and humor by The Iowa Baseball Confederacy. If you love baseball, the Cubs, and/or Iowa, then this book is something you will enjoy fully. If you love mystery and/or romance literature, you will be pleased by Kinsella's story and writing.
    There is Magic in Baseball
Love this book, though may not be for you if you don't like "magical realism." Why baseball is unique among sports, why the stories endure, and why the game may be the highest form of sport and art.
... all books written by this author are magical and great.
Any and all books written by this author are magical and great.

A glorious summer read! Baseball, summer stillness and heat, whimsy, and wonder in every word! It will never get old!

    Another brilliant Thursday Next book
Would you consider the audio edition of The Woman Who Died a lot to be better than the print version?
I have visual problems now, so Audible has given me the gift of books again. The narrator is good and a most enjoyable read.
What other book might you compare The Woman Who Died a lot to and why?
The Jasper Fforde books are 'one out of the box'! They have a great deal of literary knowledge in them, are a lot of fun with some wonderful plays on words.
What about Gabrielle Krugers performance did you like?
Gabrielle Kruger has a great, laid back approach to reading Thursday Next that enhances the character and story.
    Any additional comments?
A most enjoyable listen/read. Thank You!
    prefer the earlier books
though interesting this book has cut away from the original story line and totally away from the book jumping which for me made up the character of Thursday next. I had a feeling as I listened to it that the author just wanted to finish the series of books and bring it to end, which I guess has happened but not in the way I expected or really enjoyed.
Quintessential Fforde, not so well read
Quirky, witty, highly confusing to anyone who doesn't relax by untangling string. The performance suffered from occasional, jarring lapses of comprehension. Inappropriate inflections inadequately understood sentence structure made this, for me, a very frustrating listen.
    Another ace Thursday Next tale
I have been a fan of this series since stumbling on the intriguingly titled "Lost in a good book" .
This is another great story that ties up previous loose ends in classic Nextian fashion while leaving scope for other sequels.
I hope there will be more travels in the BookWorld.
This was the first in the series that I listened to on Audible and I thought the reader performed very well, just like I imagine Thursday to sound.
    Fforde still going strong.
I love Jasper Ffirde's stories and hid boundless imagination. Thursday Next continues to entertain and thrill.

    Publisher's Summary:
In her most scandalously titillating novel since the number-one best-selling Hollywood Wives, internationally renowned author Jackie Collins takes her listeners into the bedrooms of Hollywood's glamorous world of superstardom, where narcissism is a virtue and infidelity means not sleeping with anyone less attractive than your spouse.
Hollywood Divorces features three classic Jackie Collins women: There's raven-haired Shelby Cheney - a talented film actress - who is married to Linc Blackwood, a macho movie star with a yen for hard booze, nights out with the guys, and plenty of other women. Lola Sanchez is a sexy Latina superstar, who climbed to the top the hard way. As an unknown, Lola encountered Linc Blackwood at a party and spent the night with him. Now that she is a superstar, he fails to remember their long and steamy night together, infuriating Lola, who has revenge on her mind.
Cat Harrison is a blonde, independent, hot writer/director with a wild-child past, a hit movie, a rock star husband, and an amorous studio mogul determined to make her do things his way or not at all. But Cat is not a girl to be pushed around, and Cat has big plans of her own - plans that will surprise and shock everyone.
Divorce - Hollywood style - has never been more fascinating. The result is delicious fun.

    Fun and Sexy
Another fun summer read by the Queen of guilty pleasure reading!!! Jackie Collins never lets her readers down.
Least favorite of the "Hollywood" series
I gave it two stars because I did at least finish it though I completely stopped following one of the characters and skimmed through the other two. It's about three distinct Hollywood women (a serious actor, a sexpot actor, and a very young writer/producer) and their men. It starts out really, really good (grabs your attention) but midway becomes a mindless read that eventually loses its "umph." The climaxes for each character are little more than a footnote on the pages. Too much emphases on the ho-hum stuff, not enough attention to the "shockers" which kind of brings it to an abrupt ending. If you haven't already, try "Hollywood Wives" and "Hollywood Husbands" - those books are 5-star!
    Five Stars
    Love all Jackie Collins books!
    a page turner
This book is written in classic Jackie Collins style. Interesting characters (not to many so you won't loss track or have to reread the beginning). While this book is a page turner and entertaining I would suggest not reading to many of JC books back to back because then you might see that her books are basically written with the same type of storylines. Linc Blackwood and Lola Sanchez are hilarious characters and there is not a boring chapter in this book. I actually have not finished the book but from what I've read it is a must buy and read.

    not new
This was supposed to be a new book but it definitely is not. I am a little disappointed. I wanted it new.
    A Very Fun Read
This book was so much fun, an interesting story about a man trying to prove his love in the most unusual way. If only men did stuff like this for us in real life, right ladies? If you want a classic dignified read, don't get this book, but if you strictly want entertainment, this is the book for you.
    "Brain Candy" Alert
J.J. Smith works for the Book of Records; he goes around the world searching for new and exciting records for the book. When he hears that a man is eating a 747 all for the love of a woman, he goes to investigate. Sounds promising, but I was disappointed.
I have nothing against "light," easy reads, or what I call "brain candy." Not everything that I read has to be extremely profound, but this just has no substance at all. The characters have little depth and development, and what little they did have was presented by telling instead of showing. We are told everything about the character instead of shown. Thought the premise of the story is unique, I found the plot to be predictable as well. I sped through the book just to get through it sooner. Definitely will be passing this one along.
    Lovely little tale
Lovely little tale, with interesting characters and a unique plot. I really enjoyed this story, it still makes me smile.
    Maybe Better On Film?
I read somewhere (maybe this site?) that a screenplay was in the works. I can imagine this story well on the big screen. I was enchanted at the beginning of the story, but my expectations swiftly began their downhill descent. The writing was okay, the plot too predictable. It's a very short book, but I struggled to finish it. I gave it three stars basically because there were a few really good lines in it that warmed my heart. One in particular: "..We chase wild dreams and long for all that eludes us, when the greatest joys are within our grasp, if we can only recognize them..."

The crying persisted. The door of the lighthouse clanged in the distance, and Tom's tall frame appeared on the gallery as he scanned the island with the binoculars. 'Izzy!' he yelled, 'a boat!' He vanished and re-emerged at ground level. 'It's a boat all right,' Tom declared. 'And oh cripes! There's a bloke, but ' The figure was motionless, yet the cries still rang out. He hoisted out a woollen bundle: a woman's soft lavender cardigan wrapped around a tiny, screaming infant.
Tom Sherbourne, released from the horrors of the First World War, is now a lighthouse keeper, cocooned on a remote island with his young wife Izzy, who is content in everything but her failure to have a child.
One April morning, a boat washes ashore carrying a dead man - and a crying baby. Safe from the real world, Tom and Izzy break the rules and follow their hearts.
It is a decision with devastating consequences.
Australian actor NOAH TAYLOR made his name in critically acclaimed films such as The Year My Voice Broke and Shine, and has also appeared in high-profile blockbusters such as the two Lara Croft Tomb Raider films and Tim Burtons Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He recently starred in the accomplished British comedy Submarine.

    Falls between 2 oceans
I don't know this author, and though I read the reviews about the difficulty hearing the audible reader, it looked good. However, it missed me.
    A special read
A beautifully written story which is read with skill and charm by Noah Taylor. His lovely gentle tone is perfect. This novel is thought provoking and poignant and portrays a past time with such skill that one doesn't want it to end. An absolutely unforgettable read. Ten out of ten.
    Love
I have titled this review love because in my view it is such an exploration of love and its many forms,Men and Women, child to parent parents to children and Parents to grown up children.
I loved it it was beautiful I would love it to be made into a film.
Only negative was the narration which I struggled with at first but give it time and its just perfect.....
Great story, very descriptive & extremely moving!
Noah Taylor's narration, enhances by a mile this audiobook, he captured the emotions so well, I felt he had a tear in his eye @ times by the crack in his voice & I felt obliged to join in! A really great story, well written with very descriptive text, a favourite of mine!

'Fellowes doesn't try to hide his love of the funny, sealed, above-stairs world of dukes, duchesses, marquesses, nursery maids, herbaceous borders and breakfast kedgeree, all of which makes Snobs such a good, fresh read.' (Daily Telegraph)
Edith Lavery is a woman on the make. The attractive only child of a middle-class accountant, she leaves behind her dull job in a Chelsea estate agents and manages to bag one of the most eligible bachelors of the day: Charles Broughton, heir to the Marquess of Uckfield. But is life amongst the upper echelons of 'good' society all that it seems? Edith soon discovers there's much more to the aristocracy than dancing in Anabel's, shooting small birds and understanding which fork to use at dinner. And then there is Charles's mother, the indomitable Lady Uckfield, or 'Googie' to her friends, who is none too pleased with her son's choice of breeding partner.
With twists and turns aplenty, this is a comical tale worthy of a contemporary Jane Austen.
    Members Reviews:
    Fabulous writing and interesting perspective
What did you love best about Snobs?
The writing, Julian's style is a joy and so enjoyable. Captivating and transporting!
What other book might you compare Snobs to and why?
Much like the script of Downton Abbey, the writing style remains. The more contemporary setting though allows for a different and interesting read
What does Richard Morant bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
I found his voice and phrasing whipped my mind away into the book, transporting me from my own life and making me feel empathetic to characters whose behaviour may not have naturally encouraged that from me.
Who was the most memorable character of Snobs and why?
This novel works because of its broad cast, to remove those whose behaviour you liked less would dissemble the plot
    Any additional comments?
Thoroughly enjoyable, I will continue to listen to his books in the future
Interesting perspective but ........a little dull
I bought this based on the reviews that I read. I was expecting more of a story but it seemed like a fairly repetitive description of upper class Britain, with a few characters thrown into a very predictable plot to fill out all the observations, Informative but not really my cup of (English Breakfast) tea.
    Interesting and Fun
The author of Downton Abbey cannot fail to bring an intriguing, scandal-ridden story. The narration of this book is supurb which allows you to be drawn in to the characters and the plot of the story. It is a modern-day Edwardian tale, with an intriguing insight into the British class system. It has big houses, aristocrats and the middle-class wannabes all tied in to this light, amusing, slightly different take on the average romance novel. I enjoyed it and would recommend it if you are wanting something entertaining and not too heavy. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars for the story, is that I found it a little predictable - but that could just be me!
    loved it
Started off a bit slow, but once the story kicked in I loved it. Great characters.
    Well narrated froth
    Any additional comments?
The narrator (a middle class actor who marries an upper class girl) spends a great deal of time giving the reader a social commentary on the manners, morals and general belief system of the English upper classes.

When Dorothy came back from the dead, Aaron noticed that some people simply ignored the fact; some seemed to have forgotten she had died in the first place; and others just walked straight on by. The accident that killed Dorothy - involving an oak tree, a sun porch and some elusive biscuits - leaves Aaron bereft and the house a wreck. As those around him fuss and flap and bring him casserole after casserole, Aaron ploughs on. He busies himself with work at the family firm, a publisher with a successful line in 'Beginner's Guides' to every stage and aspect of life. But then Dorothy starts to materialize in the oddest places. At first, she only comes for a short while, leaving Aaron longing for more. Gradually she stays for longer, and as they talk they also bicker...
The cracks that start to reappear in their perfectly normal marriage are as well-worn and familiar to Aaron as Dorothy herself. As Aaron starts to emerge from his grief, they are also a reassuringly poignant reminder that life may move on, but some things will forever remain the same.

Uplifting tale of love and loss
If you could sum up The Beginner's Goodbye in three words, what would they be?
    memorable, uplifting, surprising
What other book might you compare The Beginner's Goodbye to, and why?
I've not read a book like this one before, I'd compare it to the movie "The Lake House"
What does Kirby Heyborne bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
He has a wonderful voice, my only criticism is that at first listening I thought the characters were older than they were, his voice made me think of an elderly man looking back on his life
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
    Open yourself to love
    Gentle and poignant
Classic Anne Tyler, this is the first time I have listened to an audio book of hers instead of reading the book and it was wonderful. The reader's voice is very soothing and he brings out the different characters very well. Absolutely worth a listen.
    Much about nothing!
This book was a bit of a wash out for me. Didn't really go anywhere. Didn't really grab me with huge interest. A take it or leave it book.
