OMG!! This was awesome...full of suspense and I was completely drawn in almost immediately!!!

When you finally figure out 100% who the mistress is....I had my suspicions...but kept wavering a bit.....

HONESTLY LOVED THIS!!!!!!!!!!! I was drawn in and captivated from chapter one....Grace is a character you immediately want to like..she seems very delicate and you feel sorry for her...You can tell she is a really good person, who has been taken for granted for a very long time. Grace's husband dies suddenly in a freak car accident, and she all of a sudden is thrown into a web of his lies and deceit....She learns he has a home in Miami, and leaves London to settle his affairs...well Grace is prone to anxiety attacks...and calls the only person she knows there Jack to help her...Grace had met Jack several months prior and they had an instant attraction, but Grace is a good woman, and stayed faithful...Jack reluctantly agrees to help her, as he had moved on and now has a new baby and a not so nice girlfriend who really wants nothing to do with him or the baby...Well as Jack and Grace start to dig deeper into her dead husbands affairs they uncover a whole dangerous web of lies, deceit, infidelity and lots of heartache for Grace....this is one story you will NOT want to put down...and it really did leave me wanting MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!! I received this audio book as a gift in exchange for a honest and unbiased review. This audio book "Ring of Lies" is about a woman who discovers everything she ever knew about her man is based on lies. It is well written. It is dangerous and suspenseful and even a little romantic. This book really made me wonder what I would do if this happened to me... I just don't know.

Carrie Brown's take on happiness

As someone who's read nearly all Carrie Brown's novels I feel confident in offering this warning: put aside your expectations and accept right now that what you're about to read is not going to be easy, but it will be well worth your time. Her work is hardest for people who come into it expecting a simple love story with an uncomplicated plot line and characters.

In the Last First Day she presents us with Ruth and Peter--two imperfect characters who are struggling to put a name to their position in the universe (just like most of us). Their lives are flawed and for every little joy there are an equal number of painful moments. Neither of them recognize their own strengths; they are simply doing what needs to be done. For them love is no more a decision than is breathing.

As she often does, the reader follows Ruth and Peter through lives that are fraught with troubles--beginning at the end and working backwards so that the reader first sees the culmination of their journey and just when we're is beginning to ask "why" she takes us back to the beginning and reveals the answer(s) before taking us on to the conclusion.

My only complaint with this work--and I plan to re-read it to make sure it's not just me, but I don't think so--is that I think to fully appreciate Ruth, we really need to either have seen her interact with the boys at the school or seen her through Peter's eyes far sooner. While I understand that she thinks nothing of her contributions or kindnesses, it would have provided some balance in a story that focuses rather intensely on Ruth's chronically sense of unworthiness (I'm hip, Ruth. I'm hip). The boys themselves are just background noise for an awful lot of the book and this dings it a bit. Until we finally get to see Ruth through Peter's eyes, we have no idea that she's done all these fine, noble things.

That said, even with that comment, it's earned its 5 star rating. Thanks so much Mrs.

Not My Cup of Tea

I am not a huge fan of this book. I am not fond of allegorical stories and this one kind of irritated me. I kept thinking what is the point? We read this for book club and I think I was the only one who didn't like it. Comments included "delightful", "charming", "full of wisdom" etc. and I just didn't feel it. For me it was not a complex book and I had trouble feeling any empathy for the plight of the chicken which I think should have been the point of the story. I actually found myself feeling irritated with the simpleness and the one dimensional aspects of the characters and story line. I also think the story could have been told in 20 pages rather than drug out to over 100 pages.

The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly

This was a captivating story about a small hen in a laying coop who wanted more than anything to be a mother. However she was unable to even touch the eggs she laid because they fell through the bottom of the cage onto a conveyor belt to go to market. She went on an egg laying strike when she stopped eating and got culled. A weasel came that night to get dinner from the pit of dead and dying chickens. The little hen escaped and her adventure with motherhood began. The story had moments of humor, heartbreak and joy. This is not a children's story but there are lessons of life to be learned from this book. I loved the book and hated it at the same time. You have to read it to understand.

Wonderful story.

This was a wonderful short story. Simply covering the life cycles of animals on this farm and the surrounding area - giving them all personalities while they act out their perceived roles as barn animals and free animals. Through their actions the author touches on prejudice, adoption, the power of friendship, feeling trapped in an unhappy life, selfishness, bullying, and more.

We would like to talk to the stars, and yet we can barely talk to each other.

Nope. I would read it, but never listen to it again.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Equilateral?

I'm writing this review after one hour of listening. The entire concept of the novel is fascinating, but the reader is too distracting.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The reader sounds mechanical, like a computer program that reads text back to the writer. His inflections are very odd and sounds more like a news correspondent than a professional reader of novels. He more often than not oddly raises his inflections at the end of sentences. Instead of finding myself IN the story, I feel like I'm on the periphery of the story, hearing some dude read it and sound as if he's getting paid to practice an accent.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I would have liked to, but I decided to forgo the audio half of the Whispersync setup.

Good continuation of Seikei's story

My 7th grade students used this book to supplement our reading of the first novel in the series, The Ghost in the Tokaido Inn. The Hooblers did a great job creating characters that help readers understand the world of medieval Japan. We even contacted the Hooblers to ask some questions about the books, and they graciously responded.

A fantastic follow up to an amazing original story

A fantastic follow up to an amazing original story. Though this story takes place in the pleasure district of ancient Edo in Japan, it does a good job weaving a tight story about love and honor with out being seedy in any way. A great read to remind one about what honor is really is.

Frustrating

The sentences in this work are great - funny (as satisfying as the afterglow from a good shit), self-depricating (what are the two best things to come out of Freo?) and highly evocative.

The paragraphs are fantastic too - really nail the feeling of being in Perth in an interminable summer. And, although I don't think they will win and tourism awards for WA, the depictions of Freo past its prime and of Perth as a site office for a mining company ring true.

The characters are well drawn - you get the feeling of what it's like to live their lives and how the little victories or setbacks influence things.

But the plot and conclusion are just so frustrating. A quick trip to Charlie Gardiner Hospital instead of home to the couch and half the problems would be solved. The other half may still need Littlefinger to push someone out the Moon Door, but that is a different story. And the ending - perhaps I could chip in a few extra bucks and get another half hour of story.

It's a bit hard to know how to rate this. If you were only to listend to a section of it, it would be great. But I did not really enjoy the story as a whole.

What made the experience of listening to Eyrie the most enjoyable?

Winton's use of the Australian vernacular, particularly the dialogue of the two main protagonists, makes this a book particularly suited to audio.

What other book might you compare Eyrie to and why?

In my view, every book that Winton has ever written is superb: disturbing, honest, engrossing, and compelling. This is no different.

What about Michael Veitchs performance did you like?

Veitch *is* the voice of Keilly.

What made the experience of listening to Eyrie the most enjoyable?

Tim Winton is an extraordinary writer who has the ability to bring characters to life to the degree that I always feel a touch of grief when I finish one of his books. This book was no exception- I will miss the characters.

Michael Veitch brought the dialogue to life with such skill I could imagine some of the scenes being used in Actors workshops.

Fun book

What did you love best about Shadow Catcher?

I thought it was a fun book that explored the concept of global conflict without a typical egocentric government bias.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

I normally love Dick Hill, he is one of my favorites, but in this book his narration was slow and choppy. I'm not positive, but he may have had a difficult time with certain accents, as he definitely talks slower than normal with certain characters. Either way, I felt that his overall narration was needlessly slow and lacking the level of emotion I expect from this caliber of narrator.

Any additional comments?

Although the book was well written, I would have liked to see more character death and more twists and turns. Its extremely easy to see in advance where the story will end up, but it is still a fun listen.

Strikingly Real Action

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This story really connects with recent events in China. The author mixes real events from the past with fiction to expose Chinese political and military hardline tactics and ambitions. He boils it all up with heart-pounding action and believable characters for a fun and informative read.

What did you like best about this story?

The descriptions of stealth and other military tech were cutting edge. They were not exaggerated to the point of science fiction, but right at the forefront of what an elite special ops team should employ in the near future.

What about Luke Danielss performance did you like?

Luke Daniels does a great job with dramatic narration and voices (all except for Nick Barons, which seemed grating). His timing and execution of the narrative passages are excellent and kept me listening.

If you could take any character from Shadow Catcher out to dinner, who would it be and why?

I would have to say Drake Merigold. That guy is hilarious.

Abjectly poor narration detracts from a good tale

The potentially good story-line was ruined for me by Aspel's diabolically bad attempt at a Rhodesian accent & litany of mis-pronunciations such as:-

"Yarn Smerts" for Jan Smuts; "Gwaylo" for Gwelo (as in bellow not as in halo); "Betjuanaland" for Bechuanaland (with a hard "C"); "Matabelly" for Matabele (with a long "ee" after the "b") and, most appalling of all, "Vankie" for Wankie in what was probably a pathetic attempt to avoid schoolboy sniggers at the name of the well known game reserve and mining town. If he was too embarrassed to say "Wankie" then why not just say "Hwange" the post 1980's version of the name?

I laughed at first but the ineptitude grew worse as the story developed.

The charactors were wonderful, and I look forward to returning to them. Someone, please tell Lloyd James that while he has an admirable range of male voices, every time he attempts a woman's voice he sounds like Blanche Devereaux on helium. Ugh!
