Originally published as Divine Comedy by Elizabeth Pewsey.
Who needs love? Not Quinta, who's made a good life for herself, bringing up her difficult young daughter, absorbed in her work as a violin maker. And she certainly doesn't need anybody to tell her how to live her life: She has it all sorted out, down to the last dot and comma. If it isn't on a list, it doesn't exist. When her old friend Lydia appears, jilted and angry, Quinta's orderly life is shaken and her past begins to catch up with her. Then Titus, an expert on chaos theory, comes sneaking into her life and heart, even though everyone knows chaos and lists don't go together. Sins, secrets and scandals stalk the precincts of Eyot Cathedral and the ancient, twisting city streets of Eyot. As Quinta heads into a maelstrom of change, will she be able to tear up her lists and go wherever the future will take her?
An entrancing, heartwarming, and witty novel about the merry-go-round of love. Escape into another world and delight in the lives of the wild Mountjoys of Mountjoy Castle and a host of fascinating characters. This is the England of P.G. Wodehouse and Downton Abbey, where wickedness and scandal lurk beneath the superb self-confidence of the upper classes.
Best-seller Elizabeth Aston's six Mountjoy novels were originally written under the name Elizabeth Pewsey and published by Sceptre, an imprint of Hodder Headline.

not that great
I just finished this book, book 2 in the Mountjoy series. I started reading this series because I liked the Very English Mystery series the author wrote under the name Elizabeth Edmondson.
The Mountjoy series is disappointing so far. One problem is that there are no appealing characters except for two children in this second book. I found most of the characters distasteful, in contrast to the Very English Mystery series. I really had to slog through the beginning of the book until it got slightly more interesting.
The other problem is that this really isn't a series. The two books are set in the same town, but there is very little overlap of characters.
A problem unique to this book is that it is wrapped up very quickly at the end. Several characters have dramatic shifts in character and plans almost out of the blue.
I will at least start reading the next book, but this is a disappointing series compared to the Very English Mystery series. I wish there were more books in that series, as several plot lines were set up to continue.
A Joy to Read: the Mountjoy Saga is back!
This is the first of the series, and a satisfying read! Elizabeth Aston's flowing, elegant style is at her best in taking you to the cobbled streets of this charming, medieval Cathedral town in Northern England, quiet on the surface but bubbling underneath with love, sex, hate and violence...and of course, a lot of envy and gossip; and since this is England, an equal amount of humour and non-conformity. The three ladies, "the three Graces", who fix the flowers in the Cathedral are unforgettable gossiping biddies!
From the first pages you are transported into the life of the two main characters, two engaging young women in their early twenties, who are great friends yet totally different from each other.
