If you could sum up Shock and Awe: Operation Enduring Unity II in three words, what would they be?

The civil war continues from the story which was started from book 1..The story flows, but also appears to be a long string of scenarios together. That said, each scenario describes a "unit" action and could be fleshed out into a complete story by itself.It is a very good follow up book.

Very good intelligent thriller/mystery

I have had this book in my library for over three months and only just got around to listening to it. I think I had tried before and not been in the mood. However, this time I was hooked and listened to the whole thing in two days.

Always a lovely trip

If you love Venice, and who doesn't?, this writer always takes you on a lovely journey. His characters are fun, but his information about the city of Venice and its surrounding islands is better than a guide book. He includes restaurants (the good ones are notoriously hard to find in Venice and usually known only by the natives), overlooked art sites and local color that is impossible for a mere non-Italian speaking tourist to find. The plots are interesting, but it's really the local color that makes the series so special.

great atmosphere

This book carries a great sense of the atmosphere of Venice, together with interesting characters, good plot, and good writing. If you enjoy books by the late Kate Ross, I think there's a good chance you'll like this. Although set in contemporary time, it has the richness of detail that a good historical novel carries, together with a sense of the kind of people who live in and enter into that detail. Urbino and his friend the Contessa, like many protagonists, are both outside of their setting, and very much in in physically and emotionally.

A tedious mystery set in Venice

We purchased several mysteries set in Venice for a recent trip. This was the sole clunker. The premise is that a wealthy Countess falls in love with a performer who may be threatening to her. Her saviour in the mess is Urbino McIntyre, an Italian/American writer of mini-biographies, who is both her friend and is semi-supported by her. Urbino is 20 year younger than her at 45 and suffers from gout (and pretention). The writing is tortured and so is the reader. Give these a pass and try Donna Leon instead.

Great evocation of Venice

Sklepowich's fourth novel in his series is one of his best. It captures the mystery and history of Venice in vivid images and has a fascinating storyline that involves the Bocca di Leoni or the lion's mouths of truth at the Ducal Palace. The amateur detective Urbino Macintyre is following in the footsteps of the classic sleuths of the golden Age of the mystery, and his relationship with a Contessa is fascinating in what it says and it does not say, and it is a mystery in itelf. This is not for readers who like the equivalent of fast food when they read a book, but something that stimulates their mind as well as entertains, because Sklepowich is in a fine tradition of writers of elegant prose who have turned their talents to Venice, like Henry James and Marcel Proust and Thomas Mann. Publisher's Weekly gave this addition to Sklepowich's series a starred review. The seventh, The Last Gondola, was recently published.

If you love Venice...

While I realize Urbino is annoyingly one-dimensional, the real star of this series is Venice, which is decidedly worthy of being extolled and enshrined in one's imagination. I have liked the entire series and look forward to the hours of wandering the city with a main character who does not distract me from this wondrous, decaying unique work of art.

Not pleased with the development of the characters. Too many names of places that left me in a quandary. Had to force myself to finish it..

Great retro mystery set in Venice

Clever mystery set in a Venice that comes alive on the page, with similarities to Poe and Ngaio Marsh (and other classic mystery writers). In true form the puzzle is put together and the murderer is unmasked in a scene with all the suspects present - at a carnival ball in a Venetian palazzo. The style is not slam-bang but leisurely and suspenseful and requires the reader to pay attention - and then get the rewards.

Good vs Evil

What did you love best about Cold as Ice?

I think how the author drew you into the story itself. A wonderful job of giving inside information from a detective's point of view. The evil main character is the kind of guy you want to go down, but he is super elusive and untouchable in his mind.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Most definitely so. Without giving away the story in general, it leads you to believe it is headed in one direction and then on a dime it did a bizarre twist of fate. I didn't expect that at all.

What about Jeffrey Kyle Carpenters performance did you like?

I really liked his depiction of the main evil character in the book. His voice brought out the despicable nature of him vividly. In my minds eye, I could see this thug for all his worthlessness. A great job.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The moment of encounter at the comic book newsstand was the one that really stood out to me. Being the initial confrontation of the two characters, it planted not only the story line but also the contrasting differences between the two guys. It was very nicely done.

Any additional comments?

The author does a tremendous job of making a short story come to life in a big way!
