How very sad

It is difficult really to write a review on someone else's life story, it was interesting but.... for me very sad. I remember Sheila Steafel as a very funny comedic actress, and like so many other comedian/nes her life is full of hard to believe injustices. I was left feeling very empty for her, because the one person she really loved she lost.. not entirely her fault, as I wasn't smitten with Harry H, what a control freak... Anyway it wasn't a pleasant story and I hope she is happier now.

As you'd expect

There's little that's new here - much of Lance Armstrong's 'antics' have been well documented and what this book does is put everything together into a relatively cohesive structure.

Sometimes the order seems a bit off, jumping back and forth in the other cyclist's chapters, for instance Floyd Landis, but it generally holds together well.

It's not as personal as David Walsh's book, which leaves it up to the reader/listener to decide if that's a good or bad thing. For me, at times, it felt as if Juliet was listing things that happened, as opposed to explaining how she was involved in asking certain questions. David Walsh's version perhaps veers too far the other way but each book has its own merits (though I suspect Walsh himself would be surprised to hear himself called an "English" journalist - he's most definitely Irish).

All in all, if you've decided to buy this, you likely already know what you're getting - a dossier chronicling Lance Armstrong's years of cheating. Everything publicly known is there and, for that, it does what it should do.

Would you listen to Cycle of Lies again? Why?

Yes I definitely will. It's one of the best books I've ever listened to. Totally compelling.

What other book might you compare Cycle of Lies to, and why?

It is about the same subject matter as Tyler Hamilton's excellent book 'The Secret Race' but clearly broader in its research and perspective.

Similar to 'Seven Deadly Sins' by David Walsh but Juliet's book is far superior.

What about Carrington Macduffies performance did you like?

Excellent reading.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Having listened to the whole book I remember the picture painted of LA in his home just prior to the removal men. It was sad to see the impact of his actions on his family and especially the impact on his youngest children being uprooted from the family home.

One of the best books I've ever listened to.

Disappointing - Nolan deserves better

This was a disappointing book and Nolan certainly deserves a more thorough examination of his life and films. It was authored by two individuals - one who was supposedly an expert on Nolan's films and the other on his personal life. I found you got very little of either. The book went through the films, giving a brief synopsis, but not really saying a lot about what made this film better than other films of the year and of course, in every film, Nolan was the best actor in it. In some instances, there were no dates associated with the films so you somewhat lost track of when things were occurring. The book was also poorly edited. For example, on page 55 there is a line that says "...so the reigns of this third telling of Robert Louis Stevenson's tale..." Come on now, in this situation you would use reins. On page 81, the authors missed a chance to let us all know how tall Nolan was when he quoted Lynn Bari saying she would take her heels off and would wear bedroom slippers "so she wouldn't photograph taller" than Nolan - so how tall was he? We never found out in this book. On page 97, the author says that Nolan, at age 39, was "too old" to serve in WWII. Gable was a year old and served. Nor was there any mention of what Nolan did to support the war effort other than one training film. Did he help out at the Hollywood Canteen or do any USO tours? We don't know. Evidently he spent the entire war making films and didn't provide any support at all. On page 145 we have introductory material on The Caine Mutiny but you get the impression that it takes place during WWI not WWII. And then on page 196 we found out that Kiss Me Deadly released in 1959 was the first film that coined the term "film noir" when actually the classic period of film noir started in the U.S. in the 1940's although there are probably some earlier examples of the genre including 1936's Fury or 1931's City Streets. Film noir was around long before 1959's Kiss Me Deadly. On page 240, actor Ty Hardin's name is spelled Ty Harden. The book did contain interviews with some of Nolan's colleagues and family members and did have a mix of both candid family photos as well as photos from the films.

A great follow on from the first

After listening to her first book extreme where Sharon reads her story herself it was a great shame to see that she did not do the audible for this one. Hence only 4 stars! However, Imogen Church managed to give the impression of Sharon very well and soon, for me , the voice could have been Sharon anyway. So well read Imogen!! This book follows on nicely from extreme, although there is another book in between them which I have just noticed,. It explains about the tv show the osbournes, jacks MS diagnosis, the birth of his first daughter Pearl, the terrible turbulent marriage between Sharon and Ozzy at the time, her time on the x factor shows but m o st of all how a broken, tired woman gets up and carries on with her work etc showing how strong Sharon Osbourne can really be.....An inspiration to me and many others no doubt.

Love Sharon!

Sharon speaks openly and honestly about her life, her surgeries, her granddaughter, marriage to ozzie, her TV shows and Jack's illness. She's a great role model!

Astounding!!!!!!

I only got this book just because, no reason! Omg I was blown away! I loved it. Off to buy all her other books now. This is one lady that is strong and also admits it's not just Ozzy at fault but also her! And my heart melts at how they are with Pearl, Ozzy actually brought a tear to my eye! LOVED THIS BOOK!

Refreshing listen

I think one book by SB is fine by me.

It was interesting to learn about the inside of the music and entertainment business.

Do you think Unbreakable needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

I guess that depends on how much Sharon Osbourne you crave for.. I enjoyed this book but have no desire to listen further.

Having enjoyed Duncan Hamiltons brilliant biography of Brian Clough Provided you dont kiss me! (PLEASE SOMEONE RECORD THIS FOR AUDIBLE!!!) I thought I would give this a go.

Being a child of the 1980s all I remember of George best is that ill fated appearance on Wogan and Best being a byword for wasted talent and drunkenness so I was looking forward to learning more about this genius This well written and engaging book was extremely enjoyable. The narration is good and I felt like a picture was being panted throughout. With the help of You Tube I have trawled through clips of the goals and events described in the book and found these only to add to the experience.

All in all a very informative and interesting book.

There is only ONE George Best !

The first chapter of this mans amazing story had me in tears. Over the years I have followed George Best's rise and fall and have to say this book portrays an incedible journey of GB's life with so many amazing insights, facts and details that were a complete revelation to me. An extreemly well read book and it dosent much matter if you care for football or not. This story is not about football, its about a gifted mans journey through life, worts and all !!

Great Listen

What did you like most about Immortal?

I am a big fan of George Best but being born in the 80's i never had chance to see him play live only clips of him. This audio book describes lots of the moments that I have watched with precision and at times made me feel like i could have been at that moment.

Who was your favorite character and why?

George Best - he was one of the greatest football players ever, sure he had his problems but when ever he set foot on a football pitch all were mesmerised.

What does John Telfer bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?

He makes the stories come alive and made me feel like i was there at times.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I went through many emotions, smiling, laughing, crying, serious to name a few.

I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to know more about George Best.
