Title: How the Mighty Fall (Excerpt)
    Author: Jim Collins
    Narrator: Jim Collins
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 5 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-15-09
    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 70 votes
    Genres: Business, Leadership
    Publisher's Summary:
Amidst the desolate landscape of fallen great companies, Jim Collins began to wonder: How do the mighty fall? Can decline be detected early and avoided? How far can a company fall before the path toward doom becomes inevitable and unshakable? How can companies reverse course?
In How the Mighty Fall, Collins confronts these questions, offering leaders the well-founded hope that they can learn how to stave off decline and, if they find themselves falling, reverse their course. Great companies can stumble, badly, and recover. Every institution, no matter how great, is vulnerable to decline. There is no law of nature that the most powerful will inevitably remain at the top. Anyone can fall and most eventually do.
But, as Collins' research emphasizes, some companies do indeed recover. Decline, it turns out, is largely self-inflicted, and the path to recovery lies largely within our own hands. We are not imprisoned by our circumstances, our history, or even our staggering defeats along the way. As long as we never get entirely knocked out of the game, hope always remains. The mighty can fall, but they can often rise again.

    Lessons in Sustainability
The book follows the 5th Discipline Fieldbook style of using stories to convey important messages relating to sustainability, energy and resource use, amongst others. The stories illustrate the 5 disciplines of the learning organisation (Personal Mastery, Mental Models, Shared Vision, Team Learning and Systems Thinking) and how they have been used to implement sustainable systems - such as the Green Building rating system.
It gives examples of how parterships such as Coke and the WWF can work toward sustainability - and how the Industrial Age bubble is contrary to nature (there is little waste in nature).
Systems thinking and mental models are used in "The Bathtub" illustration following the Fishing Banks game. It shows how we see the "flow" element in a system (taking the fish out of the fishery) and ignore the part of the system accumulates the "stock" (the health and size of the fishery). For me, this illustration alone was worth the two-credit price of the book.
    Sustainability Through Systems Thinking
Although this book is specifically about sustainability, in a broader sense it is really about how to bring systems thinking into our institutions and into our global society. The revolution that the authors refer to is twofold: it is focused on our global environmental impact, and it is focused on the change in thinking that needs to take place in order to minimize that impact. Three key behaviors will create this shift in thinking: seeing systems, collaborating across boundaries, and moving from a problem solving mindset to one of creating the future. The book offers some great examples of how we got into our current predicament and companies that are starting to apply systems thinking to help move "beyond the bubble," as it is referred to in the book. Scattered throughout the book are sections called "Toolbox," which offer a number of exercises and activities that organizations can undertake to begin to address the issue of sustainability.

    Four Stars
Excellent book if one is interested in leadership
A must read for anyone and everyone
One of the points addressed in this book is that at the time of printing, nine states were considering allowing employees to sue management. Why it is essential to read this book is because of the Supreme Court decision in 2000 determining that the first amendment does not and will not protect harassment at work. Avis Rent a Car took a harassment case all the way to the Supreme Court through appeal and lost.
    This book changed my life
This book changed my work life. I now see leadership as an adventure with great purpose. The book is very well written and provides a lot of insights from leaders across the nation.
    Audiobook isn't half bad...
...and it isn't half good either.
[This review focuses on the technical qualities of the audiobook, and has less relevance for purchasers of the paper book.]
The tone, timbre, crispness, volume and recording level of the narration is faultless.
I really like the mp3 disk format that puts all the book on a single disk. That's splendid. I prefer the disk formats of audio books compared with the audio downloads that DRM invariably hobbles. And getting the book in one disk is much more efficient than six.
As for the content of this book, I believe there's a good message here, and I look forward to finishing the book. ON the downside, in my opinion, the authors excessively utilized multisyllabic expressions compositing constructions extensively overelongated. Short words in short sentences would have been better.
There is a serious problem with the audiobook. Each of the six tracks has a length of 1 hour or more. One of the authors was CEO of the Westinghouse radio network. I am surprised he would let this one go public. What audience will listen attentively to a speaker on any subject for a full hour? The publisher must be out of her mind. After listening for 15 minutes, you may be half out of yours.
I used my old Pyro audio software to chop each track into 16 pieces so I could manage this monster on my mp3 player. Sure, my amateur segments make for rough starts and ends, but I can easily replay a choice piece, or find where I was when I left off, or shuffle to and from tracks of another book, all of which become annoying with the original.
I copy audiobooks to my mp3 player and listen to them in that format. This works well for me. They weigh next to nothing and fit in the smallest pockets. I audiobook on my commuter bus to and from work, while working in the garden, and while hiking on weekends. I like multitasking and variety (Perhaps that just means I have a limited attention span.), and I like to shuffle the tracks of several audiobooks and throw in a few tunes as well. After a while I will have listened to the whole book in some order or other several times. That works well for me.
Great Gift for the Upwardly Mobile
    Gift purchase, receiver was thrilled.

Jon M. Huntsman built a $12 billion company from scratch, the old-fashioned way: with integrity. There were short-term costs. There were moments when it took great courage. But, ultimately, it wasn't just right; it was the best business strategy, too.
In Winners Never Cheat Huntsman tells you how he did it, and how you can, too. This audiobook is about remembering why you work, and why you were chosen to lead. It's about finding the bravery to act on what you know is right and building teams with the same courage. It's about winning. The right way.

    How Refreshing

Simple message to do what is right
This is an excellent book on honesty and ethical behavior. The message is simple and clear - do what is right. If you start to rationalize your decision (e.g., it was a verbal agreement; they know it's not an obligation until a contract is signed), you know you're going against your values but trying to justify it. The author follows this simple ideology and demonstrates that you can be both honest and successful. You don't have to pay bribes to create a billion dollar company. You don't have to have lots lawyers to draw up complicated contracts so each company can protect itself from other's unscrupulous behavior. The author Jon Huntsman Sr. gives many stories about winning without cheating.
Top Five Business Book for CEO's
Would you consider the audio edition of Winners Never Cheat to be better than the print version?
Strongly recommend both print and audio. This is not a book you read only once or that you keep to yourself.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Jon M. Huntsman is a corporate hero. If all CEO's were like Jon, no one could ever criticize capitalism.
What does Stow Lovejoy bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Stow speaks from the heart, reflecting Jon well.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
"A handshake should always be as binding as a signed legal document." ~ Jon Huntsman
    Any additional comments?
Read this book! Listen to it! Read it again! Give it away! Create a corporate culture and family culture that reflects the principles in this book. This book receives my highest recommendation. How can I give more than five stars?
Ethic is the key to success
Family, charity and business all require high level of ethics in order to truly be successful and Jon reminds us of this as he walks us through the ups and downs of his life.
    No need to compromise!!!
Great book. Proof that there is no need to compromise integrity to succeed.

    Publisher's Summary:
Within a company or industry, opportunities can be found in unexpected occurrences, incongruities of various kinds, process needs, or changes in an industry or market. Outside a company, opportunities arise from demographic changes, changes in perception, or new knowledge. There is some overlap among the sources, and the potential for innovation may well lie in more than one area at a time. Innovations based on new knowledge tend to have the greatest effect on the marketplace, but it often takes decades before the ideas are translated into actual products, processes, or services. The other sources of innovation are easier and simpler to handle, yet they still require managers to look beyond established practices, Drucker explains. The author emphasizes that innovators need to look for simple, focused solutions to real problems. Subjects covered include creativity, entrepreneurship, and innovation.
This audiobook has 9 tracks, the first being the Introduction and the last the principles of Innovation according to Peter Drucker. The middle tracks are the 7 places to look for opportunities. 1. Introduction: 7 Places to Look for Opportunities. 2. Unexpected Occurrences. 3. Incongruities. 4. Process Needs. 5. Industry & Market Changes. 6. Demographic Changes. 7. Changes in Perception and Mood. 8. New Knowledge. 9. Principles of Innovation.

    Advocates a Particular Style
OK, so we all know that the quality of a leader is inversely proportional to the number yes men that she retains. Jack Welch said something like a chronic and systemic lack of candor is business's "dirty little secret". But what to do?
This book advocates something like an anti-yes-man culture, an in your face argumentative style. As a reluctant researcher, I like this style. But little deep insight is presented that fundamentally supports the idea that this is the best style. Recently, I've been doing business in Asian and European and it's become much clearer that the style advocated by this book is at odds with many cultures. I've also seen a professor run a research group that was so confrontational that certain students, especially if they were otherwise different, were unable to break into the group, in spite of having as much talent as the insiders. At some point you can replace a culture of yes-men with a debating society culture where nothing gets done. The book fails to acknowledge these or any other limits of its core idea. So as an intellectual work it largely fails.
However, as a slightly superficial how to book it's well done. And you find yourself saying, "Yes, that's exactly what we need", often enough to be ironic.
    Appreciate his lectures even more
Good read, with more detail into decision making than Michael's Great Lecture series, but I find I enjoy/appreciate those lectures more. I learn so much from Mr. Roberto that I will read/listen to most everything I can get my hands on.
    Decisions, decisions
Very enlightening book, with a lot of nice examples. It let you think about your role in the company. Good reading (or listening) for managers on all levels.

Valuable content degraded by the narration
Excellent discussion of leadership development in the US Army and how this approach is equally relevant in the civilian sector. However....
Despite my preference for audio books to the physical (they make my long commute productive), if I had not been required to read this for a class deadline I would have gladly read the book instead of listen to this narrator read another word.
I have never been picky about this topic, and have found no issue with many books that reviewers had similar complaints about. I don't know about the narrator's other work, but this performance was atrocious. The pace was so ploddingly slow that I had to increase the speed to tolerate listening. Additionally, there must be half an hour's worth of unnatural and distracting pauses that do not coincide with the format of the text.
This book is easily a one-sitting read that would take about 4-5 hours to complete, but somehow draaaaaaaaaaags to 7 when read here.
    Great
This is an interesting book. I enjoyed listening to it. I highly recommend this book.
