A Book About Books & Friendship
For those of us who love books, and books about books, THE READING GROUP offers a lively and cosy read. The premise is clever: this reading group of five women in coastal Devon, England choose to read a classic each month. And the story takes turn highlighting each woman separately in a few chapters, with her life paralleling the classic the group read that month.
For example, Anne Marie is a young 22-year-old, recent college grad and only child of a wealthy father who thinks she might start a match-making business for others, even though her own love life is lacking. The classic for her month? EMMA by Jane Austen which is about a young woman with a widowed father and no siblings. Emma, too, decides to help others find romance, although she has no experience with it.
It's fun to see how the author tailors the novels to the five women, and modernizes the elements of the classic story through the events in each woman's life. I found all of the women sympathetic and likable. At first, I thought Anne Marie a bit spoiled and daft, but then realized she was supposed to be like Emma, a character I like in Austen's book.
The novels chosen are diverse. I won't reveal them, as that's part of the fun, wondering what the author was going to select for the book of the month for the reading group each month. And how the characters would be impacted by the events in the stories.
In a way, this book reads like five short novellas or stories about each character. Each character gets about 80 pages for their story. The characters' stories are linked. If you like upbeat, light narratives about women who like books and reading groups, you may find this a 5-star read. I don't usually read books in this genre, and was pleasantly surprised I enjoyed it. Some might call this chick-lit. If you like an English setting, and stories about women who are dealing with relationships and work, you may want to sample this book.
Not My Type of Book
2.5 stars
This is a case of a reader and a book not making a connection. This is just not my genre. I think people who like Nora Roberts or Danielle Steele or that type of novel would really enjoy this. Unfortunately, I am not that person. This is the story of five friends who make a book club so you would suspect that the subject of books would figure into it. Not really. It's more the story of young people who are just starting out in life and trying to make their way.
