Interesting story poorly read

What did you like best about Montpelier Parade? What did you like least?

This is a well written story and it was interesting to read about a Dublin I recognize. The development of the hero from boy to young man is well handled and his deprived background is very well observed. My enjoyment of the story, however, was very much affected by the monotonous tone of the narrator. It is not always a good idea to have a writer read his own work and it certainly did not work out here.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The three main characters are all well portrayed but the narrator, Sonny, is probably the most interesting.

Would you be willing to try another one of Karl Gearys performances?

I would certainly read another of his books but not listen to him as a narrator.

Love in a harsh climate

1980s County Dublin. 16 year-old Sonny Knolls is told by his mother to stop dreaming of all the things he can never have and buckle down to a butcher's apprenticeship now that he's been suspended from school for thieving and fighting. It's a bleak scenario: his mother whom he loves but doesn't help spends her life ground down 'peeling, peeling, peeling' at the sink, trying to feed her family on the scant money left over from her husband's visits to the bookies and the pub. They have no phone and life is measured out in endless cigarette butts. His only 'friend' is drop-out Sharon who offers banter and casual, meaningless sex.

Sonny helps his father with odd jobs to earn a little money and it's there in Montpelier Parade in the smart area of Monkstown that Sonny sees Vera for the first time: a beautiful woman the age of his mother, but all that his mother is not. The affair that develops between them, the 'great burning' at the centre of Sonny, is created with lyrical delicacy of language and incandescent details and brief scenarios, as he and Vera each find something to stifle the loneliness and desolation which offers escape.

This is an ambitious and brave first novel and would make a great film.

If you love 'Downton Abbey' this story is for you

As a huge âDownton Abbeyâ and âUpstairs, Downstairsâ fan this book ticked every box. Yes, itâs a historical romance in some ways but also has hints of suspense and a thread of social commentary running right through the story. It starts in 1905 with Helena who is a young debutante entering her first London season. She is soon steered by her family into marriage with a powerful, rich man who appears to be charming and everything she could wish for. But Oliver has his own dark secrets and Helena realizes sheâs made a big mistake. Her unhappiness is made worse by her attraction to a young doctor, Nicholas, who is considered to be far beneath her socially. The contrast between the different classes is well observed and the role of women and their lack of power is well brought out. The deft way in which this story is told goes far beyond a traditional romance but will still leave the reader more than satisfied at the end.

A gripping, enthralling and perfectly balanced historical read.

I read a huge part of this book in one sitting because I simply couldnât stop reading! Dangerous Decisions had me hooked from the first page. This is a beautifully written period story that transports the reader back in time to be totally immersed in the sights and sounds of the era. It explores the lives of a whole raft of vibrant, colourful Edwardian characters from the wealthy landowners down to the poverty stricken lower classes. Margaret Kaine paints a complete, what must have been meticulously researched, canvas of Edwardian living. Downton Abbey eat your heart out!

The reader can immediately identify with Helena, the lead lady of the book and share her concerns about her choice of husband, but also sympathise with her as her sense of duty prevails. Through the thoughts and opinions of her characters Margaret Kaine weaves in to the story all the important social and political issues of the day. She gives us an insight into just how difficult life could be as an Edwardian woman, whether she was privileged and wealthy lady like Helena or existing on her wits as a âlady of the nightâ like Cora.

It is a gripping tale full of intrigue, prejudice and romance which takes the form of two very different men, one who the reader very early on falls in love with and one whose despicable actions invoke only contempt.

Towards the end of the book I began to wonder how all the strands of the story were going to come together or if they ever would. I had to keep reading, it wasnât an option, it was a necessity.

Turning the pages reveals the eclectic mix of characters from all walks of life and class, all expertly bought to life.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was easy to read and I could definitely see this appealing to a large range of ages

Seven Steps to Happiness by Stella Newman follows the day to day lives of Lenny and Juliet. Lenny and Juliet are the best of friends, and have been since school, but their lives have taken very different routes. Lenny is bored of her job, bored of her friend with benefits, and all over just a bit stuck in life. Juliet, on the other hand is happily married, with a beautiful daughter and home â although she still has her fair share of problems, too, but I wonât spoil that for you!

I absolutely loved both Lenny and Juliet â they are both very well developed characters and I ended up rooting for them both. I felt their pains, their frustrations, and smiled along in their happiness. I definitely didnât struggle in liking Lenny (as I have read a few other people say in their reviews online), and overall I cannot fault Stella Newman whatsoever on Lenny and Juliet. I havenât read a book where I have loved the characters this much in a long time!

I not only have to praise Stella Newman for her character development, but also the evident amount of research that must have been undertaken to create such a complex plot. Rather than skim over details of Lennyâs job as a researcher, we see her in the role with the perfect amount of detail â same goes for Julietâs career and the cities visited throughout the novel. This made the novel that bit more realistic, and helped me create a much more vivid motion picture in my mind.

Within this light-hearted easy page turner are some more serious topics â adultery, divorce, unemployment, social hierarchy and much more. All are dealt with very well â realistically and sensitively â and also show the reader that no one is perfect: we all have our own battles in life! That being said, the characters all work through their issues with the help of their friends, which inspired positivity within me. If Juliet can get through her issues with Matt, I can surely get over my much smaller personal issues in life!

I have only a couple of negative points I have to discuss, which are the reason this book wasnât quite up to a 5/5 from me. Firstly, it took me a while to really get into the storyline. The first few chapters seemed quite slow, with not much progress on the plot.

Pleasant Australiana history read .

Thoroughly enjoyable historical fiction set in early days Australia!

Kate Carterâs life had changed since her father had died â ten years old and her only happiness was climbing the tallest tree and talking to his spirit. Her mother was working for the Reverend while Kate was relegated to the servants, doing chores from dawn to dusk. The new colony of New South Wales was a place of danger and hunger â Kate missed her father desperately. Ten years later on the death of her mother, Kate no longer wanted to stay in the Reverendâs employ. A headstrong and feisty young woman, she was determined to make her own way in this desolate country.

Kate's position of ladyâs companion was procured by the Reverend; the advice of the many she spoke to was not to venture beyond the boundaries of the colony. But she had nothing to stay in Sydney town for â her future was in the unknown. Australiaâs wild and unoccupied lands were a dangerous and unpredictable place. Travelling to the other side of the Blue Mountains was fraught with danger.

The Aboriginal people were devastated by the arrival of the white settlers. They didnât understand the native ways; the burning of the land to generate new growth was frowned upon by the whites. The volatile situation with the natives attacking and murdering was terrifying â who was this white man living in an Aboriginal world? Was he friend or foe?

I absolutely loved Wild Lands by Aussie author Nicole Alexander. A fabulous portrayal of early life in the 1800s in Australia as it slowly became inhabited by convicts and white settlers alike; the heartbreak of everything the Aboriginal people had ever known being taken away from them by force.

Best friends Bronwyn and Claudia were finally catching up in Perth after not seeing each other for over six months. Both had been exceptionally busy; Bronwyn as a lawyer and Claudia running her father Horaceâs winery which was struggling after a mixture of family problems. Claudia wanted to be a lawyer and dreamed of having a job like Bronwynâs â Bronwyn hated her job and wanted to go to the winery, the place she had loved for the last ten years. So the two friends jokingly decided to swap places with each otherâ

When Claudia turned up for the interview at Hanks and Eddings in place of Bronwyn, she was thrilled to be successful. There was a slight hiccup which she didnât correct â she was sure no one would find out anyway; would they? I loved The Grass is Greener by Aussie author Loretta Hill. A nice mixture of suspense (I loved Elsa!), intrigue and romance, the loyalty of best friends and of finding your own way. There was also mention of the Maxwell family, both Phoebe and father John (of The Maxwell Sisters) as their winery was next door. It felt like catching up with old friendsâ

This quote especially took my eye: âSo, what youâre really saying is, the grass is greener on the other side, but only if you water it.â Sums the saying up nicely I think. I have no hesitation in highly recommending The Grass is Greener â another classic by this author!

Warm and Witty Read

Almost everybody can relate to a "grass is greener" moment or two in their lives. It seems that it is part of being human to feel envy towards a friend, relative or even stranger who has or is doing something that we want to do. In this aptly titled book best friends Bronwyn and Claudia are facing that exact dilemma.

I somehow finished it and did have fun along the way... The central character (oh dear, already can't remember her name) was interesting if not very likable. But it was altogether too "chicklit" for me.

Glad I finished

I only gave 4 stars to this novel because at one point I seriously considered putting it down. The back and forth of the two main characters was confusing to me. The author did a magnificent job of painting vivid pictures through her words. My attention slowed and I found myself frequently stopping and putting the book aside. That said, the novel was worth the effort of continuing. The condition of dementia was treated well and my reward was completing the book.

Tedious

I tried, I really tried but I could not finish it. I managed about a third of the book. I found it confusing - jumping from one narrator to the other and oh! the intensity of the language and the long-winded tedium of the story line. It was all so heavy. The efforts at symbolism left me cold (ie the protagonist being likened to a kingfisher) ... how so many people could rate this book so highly is beyond me.

A wondrous symphony of colours, perfumes and feelings...

Characters who donât know what they are, who donât know what they want. Great literature is full of them â think Hamlet, think Beatrice and Benedict â and their search for answers to the questions they ask provides constant fascination for the reader who is prepared to enter into their world and try to understand them.

To do that, of course, demands a certain effort. But why should a reader not be prepared to make an effort? The French novelist André Gide said, âTough luck for the lazy reader, thatâs not the sort of reader I want!â But sometimes, as here, the effort is indisputably worth while. Baptiste Molino is a therapist, and a therapistâs insights do not come to him ready-made, they come in bits and bobs, in scraps which he has to piece together like a patchwork quilt, and so it was with me when I read Everything Love Is.

Be prepared for an emotional roller-coaster ride; how could it be otherwise in a novel bearing such a title? Be prepared too for the different points of view, so essential for a true understanding of love. And don't ignore the delightful little kingfishers and owls placed at the head of every little chapter â they are there to help you find your wayâ

This is a beautifully written and beautifully crafted book. I cannot recommend it enough!

This book will rip you to shreds and put you back together!

It's hard to put into words how feel after reading this book. Sara Arden has crafted an amazing masterpiece that will rip you to shreds and the put you back together piece by little tiny piece. There are so many things that stand out in this book that it's going to be hard to identify them. Let me start with the realism. This book, while not shoving your face in it, delivers a realistic view of what some of our returning soldiers endure on a daily basis. This is not the fairy tale of the returning hero even if the town wants it to be that way. Jack comes back damaged, emotionally, mentally and of course physically. We walk through a small part of the nightmare that he has to live with each day. We get a glimpse of what our soldiers come home with and how some of them deal with it. I loved that a session at the VA was included in this story and I hope we get to see more as the series progresses. It's so important to be reminded that just because they come home doesn't mean they leave the desert behind, some bring back more than they bargained for. I think it's also important that we get to see what the people around him see so we get a full circle view of Jack. He's good at hiding from most. The depiction of him not being able to taste....that's brilliant....that's truth and it was delivered to us in beautiful, heart-wrenching prose. If you are not affected by this then you just aren't human.

Now to the love....it's all there, every kind of love you can think of and experience is contained between the covers of this amazing tome. We are also assured that no matter the wounds love can maybe not "fix" it but it can give you the strength and courage to at least want to move forward. But...it also shows that accepting that love through all the pain isn't always the easiest thing to do but true love for each other can and does win, if we give it a chance.

Of course, the book would be nothing without Betsy. Sweet, wonderful, damaged Betsy. She suffers from what many of us do. We all believe that the fairy tale will make everything alright, will fix everything but she learns that the tapes that run on repeat in our heads can't be silenced by anyone else, that we have to silence them. She shows what I've always felt, it's so easy to be strong for someone else, it's easy to ignore our own pain and try to make everyone else's pain better, that way we don't have to look at ourselves. She was successful at that with all the people in her life but then we see her growth, her move to wanting to help herself.

There are so many ups and downs, 2 boxes of Kleenex worth for me but they were so worth it.

While Katie's glad it's not a man's world anymore, she'd be quite pleased if there were more men in it - or at least single ones, anyway.

More likely to get murdered than married, according to gleeful media reports, Katie resigns herself to the fact there's no sex in the city and heads for the hills - or the Scottish Highlands, to be precise.

Despite the fact she's never been a girl for wellies and Fairlish is in the middle of nowhere, the tiny town does have one major draw: men. Lots of them. But while Katie relishes the chance to do battle with armies of admirers, she's not reckoned on going head to head with her grumpy new boss, Harry; shadowy developers intent on destroying the beautiful countryside; and Mrs. McClockerty, the least suitable hotelier since Norman Bates.

At least there's the local eye candy to distract her, including gorgeous newshound Iain. But he is at loggerheads with Harry, and Harry despises her. Life in the country might not be one big roll in the hay, but can Katie ever turn her back on the delights of Fairlish and return to city life?

Made me laugh!

What made the experience of listening to Where Have All the Boys Gone? the most enjoyable?

I really enjoyed this book as I do all of Jenny Colgan's but I particularly loved Helen McAlpine's excellent reading of it. Sometimes I don't enjoy people doing voices, but hers and her Scottish accents are just brilliant and made me laugh as much as the story itself.

slow starter... but not a bad book

This was a very slow starter, different from many of Jenny's other books (example. cupcake cafe), I thought the narrator was very good and I enjoyed the story. however, there does seem to be a bit too much swearing in it for my liking.

Horrible girls. Common, chav, sexist, ageist, sizeist. Nothing to like about them.

What didnt you like about Helen McAlpines performance?

OK. But lots of words mis-pronounced. And a mistake of name that was left in. Expressions spoken and not put into play.

Boring and dull. Girls are horrible. Dull story. Just awful.

A very far-fetched and silly plot, but with lots of laugh out loud moments and a satisfying ending. Helen McAlpine's narration was absolutely superb (apart from the famous people who strayed into the story - she's no mimic!)
