    ...and Everything Nice!
Enjoyable read! I especially loved the descriptive food and dessert talk! Made me wish I were there in the dining rooms of all the chefs! Lets find a producer and get this novel made for Tv! Love the idea of the chef kitchen swaps! Sweet romance and of course a happy ending!
    Sweet and sassy!
I enjoyed this. Got the audio version and the narrator was delightful. A sweet, sassy read.
    A real treat
This is another winning book by Angela Britnell. Sugar and Spice is fun, sassy and such a pleasure to read. Lily is such a vibrant character in contrast to Kenan's stoic charm. I loved all the romantic tension, while Kenan tried to maintain his prickly exterior.
Before they even have a start, Kenan's ex-wife shows up and puts a monkey wrench in the works- then it all gets very complicated on both sides. When there is a will there is a way and somehow Lily and Kenan find their way.
I love to watch the Food Network TV shows and I can envisage "luscious Lily"'s show. Sugar and Spice is a great treat of a book with gorgeous Cornish men and equally gorgeous locations. If you are looking for a book with the feel good factor, then this is the book for you.
    Interesting Read
They say the way to a manâs heart is through his stomach, but this couldnât be further from the truth for Lily when she meets the taciturn, sometimes rude, Cornishman Kenan.
Lily Redman and Kenan Rowse appealed to me instantly, mostly because they couldnât be more different. Lily is a rising star of the Cooking Network, a bubbly, energetic workaholic, while Kenan is jobless, divorced and haunted by his past mistakes. As we follow them through the story, it turns out they are far more similar than it seems at first glance, and because of this, the chemistry between them was convincing. The way they slowly reveal their true selves to each other and how that forms a strong base for their burgeoning feelings was the highlight of the novel. The differences between them make for a dynamic relationship from the first meeting on, and it only intensifies as several obstacles come in the way of them admitting their feelings and being together.
The novel starts off to a fast pace, but it loses steam in the middle with Lily and Kenan dilly-dallying about what to do about their growing relationship, until it picks up again towards the end. The story becomes more complex and intriguing as more and more side characters appear, but most of these are portrayed too black and white, which is a shame as more complex characters couldâve lead to an even more intense plot. Especially the last conflict wouldâve been more intense if Lilyâs ex lover Patrick had not been presented so one-dimensionally. The American/Cornish language peculiarities make for a few funny moments, but the conversations between Kenanâs eight-year-old daughter Mandy and the adults often feels stilted and awkward, too childish.

    Great read.
Lovely book the author painted a great picture of the people and places. Narrated exceedingly well. I Would highly recommend.
    Her Mothers Secret
It should be called Her Grandmothers Secret, It is sad that in the late 1800's and beginning of 1900's women's lives were dictated by the men of the family, can we judge the woman who had an illegitimate child when it was the fault of her father for putting her in the predicament for his own gain? then for the child Lettie to be raised by her grandmother who feels just as guilty but being a woman also had no say in the matter. This child grows up around intrigue and deceit yet is unaware of it. When Lettie's grandmothers dies Lettie discovers she is not the orphan she has grown up believing, and so with her guardian a minister reveals to her the truth about he birth, Lettie goes on a journey that brings her truth and all she has ever dreamed of wanting. A great story.

Jerk + No Backbone = Happily Ever After?
About 40% into the book I considered quitting reading it, but decided to stick it out. The hero, Viscount Rothersthorpe, is a jerk with a capital J. All through the book, he treats the heroine, Lydia Morgan, badly. And she doesn't get a backbone until the very end of the book to stand up to him and explain the misunderstandings from their past, and even then her backbone comes and goes. Then at the end of the book, she keeps blaming herself for not having trusted him enough when they were younger. He accuses her basically of not being a mind reader. She should have known he really did want to marry her, he really did love her. Yet, as a younger man, he kept saying over and over that he didn't want to marry, he wasn't looking for a bride, and yet it's supposedly her fault for not being able to figure out that he didn't really mean that. I would have told this guy to take a hike. Most of these books have a big misunderstanding that could be cleared up if the main characters would sit down in chapter 2 and have a good talk for about ten minutes, but then I guess that would make it a short story instead of a novel. However, this character didn't just misunderstand something. He was arrogant and demeaning and cruel and a big JERK. And the heroine meant well, but barely stood up for herself and let him walk all over her and then she blames herself for all their misunderstandings.
    fair rating
Our viscount and lady fell in love when they were young: he of disreputable and broke family -she had only one season to find a husband or her guardian will toss her out. He does not tell her he loves her/ too afraid she will say no with his bad Rep and she accepts a proposal from another though she loves him having no idea how he feels. He us bitter throws himself into working to save his estate. A few years later she is a widow and the meet again. Where he is still an idiot and is angry at her for the rest of the book until the very end and she explains her side of the story.she has- few secrets if her own she didn't tell him..but no reason she should since he was being unreasonable. Overall our viscount isn't too bright .
    It was somewhat ok
Couldn't get into it. It was very slow moving. I ended up reading another book half way through this one. Than came back and finished it.
    Reforming the Viscount
I enjoyed this book very much and would recommend it to others. I look forward to reading more of her books and sharing them with my friends.
    Very nice read
I loved this one. Hero and heroine were very believeable and I like the way they were brought together. This is only my opinion but I enjoyed the light reading of this one.

    Publisher's Summary:
One week before Lady Barbara sails home to London, how can she resist a last fling at the buccaneers' Carnival on Grand Terre? With Mardi Gras banned in the Louisiana bayous, only Jean Laffite and his band of smugglers and pirates dare to celebrate. Widowed after a two-day marriage, Barbara feared her life was over before it really began. Tonight, laissez le bon temps rouler! In a wild crowd of masqueraders Barbara is swept off her feet by Will Stover, the Black Buccaneer. Feasting, dancing, exploring the island, this passionate stranger lights a fire in her heart. But who is he? Is the lover who whirls her through a festive shipboard wedding a costumed friend of her cousin's, as she thought, or areal pirate? When Mardi Gras ends, will she ever see him again?
    Members Reviews:
    Quirky and different
This novella is sort of a Mardi Gras version of "What Happens in Vegas...." set during the Regency period. It opens in London during Easter services and flashes back to Mardi Gras on the Grand Isle off the coast of Louisiana. We spend about half the book celebrating Mardi Gras, then jump forward to London again where we spend the other half of the story which is brought to a satisfying conclusion. The overall tone of this book is optimistic, fast paced and quirky. Though it is told completely from Lady Barbara's point of view, the story is not girly or flowery and is frequently very blunt with a dry wit which I really enjoyed! Overall a fun, light read.
    *** spoilers ***
The book is not very long at 80 pages so I'll try not to give away the whole plot. Lady Barbara's fun loving cousin convinces her to attend the Mardis Gras celebration being thrown by a bunch of dangerous pirates and privateers on an island (at this point I'm imagining Rhett Butler and Jack Sparrow). They have to get there by boat in the dark and Barbara is depending on her flakey cousin, Frank, to watch out for her and get her home safely. Once there, they are enjoying the celebration and there's lots of fun descriptions of what a reveler might see and do at this type of event. When Frank runs into friends, he leaves Barbara with a fortune teller. One of his friends comes back to find her, but he actually turns out to be Captain Prevost who was a comrade of Barbara's deceased husband. She has always been attracted to him and ends up on his ship with her cousin and plenty of food and libations. Captain Prevost asks her to marry him, and after the wedding ceremony they retire to his cabin where Barbara wakes up alone with a foggy memory and a ring on her finger. Was the wedding ceremony real? Was it legally binding? Is she married? Where is Captain Prevost? She returns to London without answers to these questions and it's there that she learns what happened. And if you want to know, you'll have to read it!
** Love scenes after marriage are briefly covered in a few sentences, but not overly graphic.
More a history lesson then a romance
I read another novel of this writer I gave a 5 star but this book was not to my liking I have to say. It feels like the writer wants us to experience Mardi Gras in the days of the privateers around the time of American Independence. It takes quite a while for the romance story to kick off and then the book ends in my opinion too soon.

    Publisher's Summary:
Michael and Pauline seemed like the perfect couple - young, good-looking, made for each other. The moment she walked into his mother's grocery store in the Polish neighbourhood of Baltimore, he was smitten. And in the heat of World War II fervour, they were hastily wed. But they never should have married. Pauline, impulsive and impractical, tumbles hit-or-miss through life; Michael, plodding, cautious, and judgemental, proceeds deliberately. In time their foolish quarrels take their toll.
A 17-year-old daughter disappears, and some years later this fractious pair is forced to rescue her little boy, named Pagan, from drug-infested San Francisco, to take him home and raise him. From the sound of the cash register in the old grocery to the counterculture jargon of the '60s, from the miniskirts to the multilayered apparel of later years, Anne Tyler captures the evocative nuances of everyday life during these decades with such telling precision that every page brings smiles of recognition. Throughout, as each of the competing voices bears witness, we are drawn ever more deeply into the complex entanglements of family life in this marvellous, multifaceted novel - one of Anne Tyler's finest.

Another heartrending and yet funny and endearing look into the amazing characters that only Anne Tyler can create - and then dissect. How does she know what goes on in the minds and hearts of all these people?
    Moving and Entertaining
One of my favourite authors, Anne Tyler has taken an ordinary coupleââPauline and Michaelââand placed them in an ordinary situation. She does this with all her characters, in all her books, and as every other Anne Tyler novel I have read, she managed to keep me riveted right to the end.
Once the story was over, I felt I knew the characters personally, and found it difficult to say goodbye to them.
Deeply empathetic with the characters, I read on, hoping Pauline and Michael could overcome their seemingly impossible differences. And at the heart of the story, there is the ongoing suspense concerning one of the children, the outcome of which surprised me, but shouldnât have â it was such a likely outcome.
I felt this was one of Anne Tylerâs best. If you're already a fan, you'll love it. If you're only just discovering this author, itâs a great starting point.
I think this is my all time favorite!!
Another one of Anne Tlyer's greats that I missed when first published in 2004. Story is so well done and again shows such mastery for developing characters and realtionships. Her stories and charachters stay with me for a long while after I finsh the book because she leaves it you to imagine how charaacter will move on. I think this is my all time favorite!!!
The Amateur Marriage is vintage Anne Tyler.
I love Anne Tyler books and this one was no exception. It is the exploration of a marriage and, although at times it appears multi-generational, it really only focuses on the marriage of Michael and Pauline and what makes a marriage good or bad. As is often the case in her novels, there is a problem child who causes stress in the marriage and who feels the stresses between her parents. There is no one who understands better the complexities among family members. This novel is a delight and I would recommend it to my sister.
    Good reading.

    Poor narration
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
This was becoming an interesting story as it introduced all the characters backgrounds. However the narration changed after an hour or so and was read like a story aimed at 3 year olds. Subjects such as sex, prison and divorce were read like the characters were on a day out to the zoo. I gave up.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The character development was most interesting.i

Very enjoyable story of how life changes change you. But in this case it has a happy ending
    Good holiday read
Enjoyable holiday book to listen to while relaxing on the beach.
    Really interesting story & characters.
I thought the narration was also good
    if only!
I love Veronica Henry's books but this one isn't one of my favourites.
it's a good book to listen to but I didn't gel with the characters very much.
The story lines for each of the people dipicted were a little too 'perfect'for my taste and I felt it came across twee.
saying that, it was pleasant enough...
    Easy relaxed reading
Great narrator and excellent story. This is a fab book for lazing in the sun and relaxing with. I have also read The Beach Hut by the same author which I thoroughly enjoyed.
It comprises of stories of the characters in a seaside resort who all own beach huts but the stories intertwine.
Well worth reading and I'm going to try some more by this author.

If this book wasnt for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?
I'm a sucker for romance even the predictable stuff but perhaps this would better suit someone who doesn't care at all for realism. Use your last 500 to buy a van without a thought for insurance? Which experienced cook would put vanilla seeds in the bin?
Would you ever listen to anything by Abby Clements again?
    Probably not.
Have you listened to any of Jane Collingwoods other performances? How does this one compare?
This is up to the narrator's usual high standard, lots of variation in voice and characters.
You didnt love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?
    Not really
A sweet story that pootled along nicely!
Predictable but enjoyable. Nice characters and nice settings to enjoy, if you love food you'll enjoy this read.
    A delicious story!
Loved it! A story about love, family and ice cream. Perfect for a rainy walk!
    a gentle tale
Would you consider the audio edition of Vivien's Heavenly Ice Cream Shop to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print version of this book, and it's not something I will probably do now.
Which character as performed by Jane Collingwood was your favourite?
Not sure I had a favourite character, but she is quite convincing as a three year old boy
    Any additional comments?
this book is a tale of family bereavement, arguments, infidelity and depression all spun together with some love and lots of ice cream.
Lovely story, easy listening, will listen again

I have read this book on the kindle, am was excited to see it in audible form. I love the story, giving inspiration, and leaving me with a warm heart.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Anna is my favourite character. I can relate to her in many ways.
What about Jane Collingwoods performance did you like?
A pleasant clear voice, narrating the story great.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I love the end of this book, as soon as I have finished I want to start all over again.

    Enjoyable read if
This was a satisfying story of compassion versus evil. However, in order to enjoy it, you have to be able to overlook the fact that the narrator makes all the male characters - even the good guys sound highly suspect.
    In The Seach of Hope
Informative what I have Said to people before, no one can tell what happens behind closed doors. most of us just want to get on pay our bills, and have a happy home life.
It is unbelievable but nearly half as many men are beaten as women. So it is not only a wife that can go through hello if men as well.
The husband was also disliked by his colleagues. Good read?

When I started this story I was prepared to read about an affair of some kindâ.what I was not prepared for was such a deep story, not to mention a story that extends much further than what the title suggests, an affair. This is a beautifully written story that stems through two generations, sometimes stepping back in time to a different time in life, but more importantly a story written of true love.
I truly wasn't sure I would like the story, but the more I read, the more I loved it! It was endearing to read about how meeting one person can truly change your whole life. But also how so many of us go about our lives not seeking to do things that we love because of a need to fulfill commitment- commitment which can sometimes strangle the very life out of you.
This was a well written story of love. It not only tells a long ago story of Rose and Henry, but also the story of two unhappy people finding happiness and love in the strangest of places. I truly enjoyed reading both stories and loved how the book goes back in time to when Rose was younger.
The ending was a surprise to me, but I loved it at as well!
