No bad guys need apply

This thematic Western anthology is all about "white hats"--good guys (or people so perceived by the authors) who really lived in the Old West. (The followup, logically, isBlack Hats.) The focal characters range from well-known figures (Buffalo Bill Cody, Doc Holliday, Elizabeth Bacon "Libbie" Custer, Tom Horn, embedded journalist John T. Finerty (who solves a murder), Bat Masterson, "Liver-Eatin'" Johnson and X. Beidler, lady gambler Poker Alice Duffield, Texas Ranger "Rip" Ford, Eleanore "Madame Mustache" Dumont, Phil Coe and Ben Thompson) to a few even I (in 45-plus years of studying the era) had never heard of--a fugitive slave named Larry Lapsley, Mormon lawman Orrin Porter Rockwell, female freighters Sarah Ferris and Sally Skull, lawyer and future Supreme Court Justice Willis Van Devanter. Likewise the authors range from the famous (Louis L'Amour, John Jakes, Richard S. Wheeler) to the more-or-less unknown (Jon Chandler, R. C. House, Lori Van Pelt, and others) who are presumably carrying the Western genre into the new century (and I'm glad to see someone's trying to). A Fine Sports Anthology

Sports fans are sure to enjoy this anthology. The five stories in the collection, all set in the nostalgic era of the 1930's, focus on the sports of auto racing, football, boxing, baseball, and hunting.

Terrence McCauley's adventure features an unlikely hero searching for fame on the dirt tracks behind the wheel of a very fast car. John Rose vividly describes the valiant struggles of a talented boxing prodigy from the hills of Kansas. Walt Layne transports the reader into the stands to view an exciting college football contest. Fred Adams, Jr. details the exploits of a traveling team during the days of the Negro Baseball League. Finally, Richard Kellogg provides a bittersweet memoir about a youth who becomes lost in the woods during a deer hunting trip with his uncle.

"All American Sports Stories" is nicely illustrated by artist Art Cooper. The beautiful picture on the cover is the work of Shane Evans. The book is an attractive collection of stories which should be appealing to sports fans of all ages. It will also remind them of the large role that sports have played in the history of our country.

I really enjoyed the story of the Negro Baseball League

Riveting 5 short sport stories. I really enjoyed the story of the Negro Baseball League, but my favorite was the story by Richard Kellogg about he and his uncle deer hunting and becoming lost in his back woods. It reminded me of the time my younger brother and I were lost in our own back woods. Though our experience was not as tragic as Mr Kellogg's still it was a very scary moment for my brother and I till we came out on a road side about 2 miles from our house.

More than just nostalgia

As usual, Richard Kellogg's contribution is a standout piece -- well-written and thought-provoking. He offers a hunting anecdote that transcends hunting and speaks to broader themes such as family relationships, mortality, and loss of innocence. If you want gripping stories that stay with you long after you stop reading, buy this book!

Novella and stories

The novella, "She," whose chapters are interspersed among the stories in a way that, with the exception of one of them that has a very satisfactory payoff indeed,

doesn't resonate especially well, is a remarkably lean and memorable evocation of both a city and a time of life.

A novella wrapped around short stories

The book âSheâ comprises a novella, âShe,â and a few short stories. The novella is divided into chapters, each called âShe,â and the short stories are interspersed between the chapters of the novella âShe.â For example, the first story/chapter is âShe,â the second is âGasâ (not directly part of the âSheâ novella), and the third is âSheâ (the second chapter in the novella). I donât know whether the intent was for the chapters of the novella to function as stand-alone short stories.

The novella is the story of an unnamed 14-year-old girl (soon to be 15) who flees her abusive and extremely religious father in Needles, California, for Los Angeles. She ends up in Santa Monica, where she has few resources, no real plan, and . . . freedom. For the most part, I found the writing solid (lovely, long paragraphs) and the character believable. There are times when the effort to maintain the conceit of the characterâs anonymity (and that of other females throughout stories) seems a bit contrived, but the story of She in Lotus Land (as one of her first contacts calls her new environs) is well told, and I found myself rooting for She and for her ongoing awakening.

The short stories are related to the novella only in the shared character of Los Angeles. I am not sure what I think of the stories. They are well written, and Michelle Latiolais has a true skill for drawing us into the stories and even the often anonymous characters seem somehow more developed than could be possible in just a few pages. At the same time, these separate stories seem somehow to be missing somethingâand yet they do ultimately fit together with the novella to tell a larger story of a city in which anonymity is often a fundamental character of life and of interactions.

An emotionally charged novel.

A Something for Everyone Collection

Everyone knows that good fiction requires imagination, and Sonny Collins has been blessed with it in this collection of short stories. When I say there is something for everyone, I truly mean just that. He shows his ability to write across genres - from sci-fi to horror to whimsy to fantasy. I especially loved his creative tale of the Trial of Dorothy Gale. Wizard of Oz fans will find this quite charming and funny. Even if you aren't into fantasy and something reminiscent of Friday the 13th (which are the first two stories), keep reading because you'll find something memorable to enjoy. This collection was truly surprising for me because the more I read, the more I realized how good it really was. That is something that doesn't happen often!

Wonderful stories, each one became my favorite as I read them

Absolutely fabulous!!

Can't say enough about this book as I absolutely loved reading every page of it. Sicily and Drake were trying to forget their uncomfortable pasts. Her with her weight and he with mafia ties. Loved how they finally overcame the issues and decided their lives and loves were worth fighting for. This was my favorite in the series. Thank you ALI Parker!!

Second Chance Romance

Just finished all 3 books in 3 days! My husband is pissed cause I didn't clean the house. Couldn't put these books down! Awesome characters with great stories. Didn't really want to finish the series. Can't wait to read about Demetrie in the next book. Addicting

He has had his eye on her since they first met, she wonders why he is attracted to 'her'?

Book three in the series, but a stand alone story regardless. Cicly (the baker) and Drake (personal trainer) are found in the first two books, but this is their story - if you loved Jaded and Justified you most likely will enjoy this book. I thoroughly enjoyed all three books and the characters.

Great book

I really enjoyed this book with all of the suspense, drama and tension between the main characters. Ali Parkers books are never a disappointment.

the most treasured aspect for me is the way the real world seems different when you break away from reading

I have to love the inventiveness and strangeness in these stories. The real pull for me here goes beyond that though. The inventiveness is certainly there, and the strangeness, and darkly pulling characters and story all the while, but the most treasured aspect for me is the way the real world seems different when you break away from reading. The stories leave a mark and you just don't look at things quite the same when you're done, though you might not be able to say exactly what is different. I guess the marvels in the stories perhaps let the reader better perceive the marvels present around them. Maybe I'm not making any sense, but I loved these stories.

Sparks Does It Again

Not your "ho-hum oh this again" stories, but smart ones that surprise you, stretch you, and leave you stunned. I was enthralled by the author's unrelenting imagination and eccentric narratives when I read her first collection, MAY WE SHED THESE HUMAN BODIES. THE UNFINISHED WORLD does not disappoint.

An amazing collection of short stories overflowing with imagination

This is a fantastic collection of stories from a very promising young writer. The author's imagination is boundless, as shown by the range of tales she weaves. Some are beautifully short pieces of flash fiction, whereas others are longer pieces (including the fantastic title novella).

Buy this book. And then keep an eye on Amber Sparks. She's going to wonderful places; let her take you there!

Short stories with a twist

Did you ever see a snippet of information and say What If? then you'll love Emma Donoghue's short stories. Everything I've read by Emma Donoghue has been great and this is no exception.

Interesting story line.

just not that interesting

A few of the stories were really enjoyable, but overall, it just wasn't that interesting. I had a hard time getting into the stories or following the flow. Not a keeper.

Interesting Women

Intriguing collection of short stories based around female moments in history (many from the author's native Ireland.)

I found myself motivated to look up some of these women on the internet- Frances Cobbe, who devoted her life to the anti-vivisection movement; Elspeth Buchan who led a religious cult in the 1790s; Dido Bell, a black girl brought up as daughter of the house by her titled white uncle in the era of the slave trade. Each story is followed by background information on the characters mentioned.

Well written and original.

Rabbit Tales

Such an amazing short story collection - Emma Donoghue's historic fiction is gorgeously written. As a historian, Donoghue has stumbled upon brilliant sotries of extraordinary women lost over time. These seventeen vivacious tales take us back through the last few centuries in England and Ireland, fleshing out personal accounts discovered through lost letters and archives.

The first story, "The Last Rabbit" is an excellent build up for the entire collection. Donoghue narrates the experiences of Mary Toft, who in the 1700's tricked her Irish town and half of London into believing that she could give birth to rabbits. While medical experts tried to desperately to disprove the hoax, Mary suffers the indignities of being a medical marvel, suffering embarrasing examinations from an assortment of "birth experts" and speculators. Her own comentary practically relates childbirth to a form of prostitution, which makes sense that in the last scene she discovers that she has been taken to a brothel to give birth to her rabbits. Marriage, childbirth and the historical low status of women take up most of the storylines. In "Acts of Union", a syphallis infected soldier is tricked into marrying an apothecary's spinster-niece.
