Publisher's Summary:
Buffalo Bill Cody, Bat Masterson, and other legendary heroic figures of America's Old West get the royal treatment in White Hats, a collection of stories by esteemed Western authors. This anthology is expertly compiled by Robert J. Randisi, who has gathered extraordinary stories of those who wear the white hat from well-known authors like John Jakes, Richard S. Wheeler, James Reasoner, and others.
In this collection you will hear the following excellent stories: "The Winning of Poker Alice" by John Jakes, "Sojourn in Kansas" by Lenore Carroll, "The Diamond-Ring Fling" by Lori Van Pelt, "The Cotton Road" by L. J. Washburn, "Buffalo Bill's Last Dream" by Arthur Winfield Knight, "A Commercial Proposition" by Richard S. Wheeler, and "Day of Vengeance" by James Reasoner.
Members Reviews:
No bad guys need apply
This thematic Western anthology is all about "white hats"--good guys (or people so perceived by the authors) who really lived in the Old West. (The followup, logically, isBlack Hats.) The focal characters range from well-known figures (Buffalo Bill Cody, Doc Holliday, Elizabeth Bacon "Libbie" Custer, Tom Horn, embedded journalist John T. Finerty (who solves a murder), Bat Masterson, "Liver-Eatin'" Johnson and X. Beidler, lady gambler Poker Alice Duffield, Texas Ranger "Rip" Ford, Eleanore "Madame Mustache" Dumont, Phil Coe and Ben Thompson) to a few even I (in 45-plus years of studying the era) had never heard of--a fugitive slave named Larry Lapsley, Mormon lawman Orrin Porter Rockwell, female freighters Sarah Ferris and Sally Skull, lawyer and future Supreme Court Justice Willis Van Devanter. Likewise the authors range from the famous (Louis L'Amour, John Jakes, Richard S. Wheeler) to the more-or-less unknown (Jon Chandler, R. C. House, Lori Van Pelt, and others) who are presumably carrying the Western genre into the new century (and I'm glad to see someone's trying to). There are 16 stories, and I marked 10 as worth reading again, although as with all anthologies your mileage may vary.
READ WHITE HATS-YOU'LL BE GLAD YOU DID!!!!
WHITE HATS is another wonderful anthology edited by Robert J Randisi. The 16 short stories in this collection cover the well know authors like Louis L'Amour, Richard S. Wheeler, R. C. House, John Jakes and James Reasoner. Add to this mix some very good authors who may not be as well known such as Jon Chandler, Judy Magnunson Lilly, Lori Van Pelt and Sandy Whiting and you have the makings of A WONDERFUL WESTERN ANTHOLOGY...which is what WHITE HATS is. You will read stories about Buffalo Bill Cody, Tom Horn, Liver Eatin' Johnson and Orin Porter Rockwell and others who wear the WHITE HATS. All in all, WHITE HATS is a book you won't want to put down....it's that good.
