    Publisher's Summary:
    Complete four short story serials
"Desert Rose": Nothing matters but keeping her land
Rose Willingham, oldest sister of four, is level-headed and strong. When her uncle dies, leaving a ranch in Arizona to her and her sisters, she has full confidence they can make the ranch into something to be proud of. What she didn't count on was a snake named Logan Pritchard or a handsome neighbor named Zeke McCammon to both have their eyes on Rose and her land.
One wants Rose along with her land, and the other will do anything to possess one or the other.
"Desert Lilly": Rustlers are after her cattle...Lilly Willingham is after them.
The second installment picks up where the first one left off: As Rose Willingham becomes Mrs. McCammon. Lilly, while happy for her sister, fears the family is being split apart. She has her eye on Luke McCammon, one of Zeke's brothers, and wouldn't mind getting hitched to such a handsome man, but she fears giving in means losing her independence.
When rustlers steal some of the Willingham and the McCammon cattle, Lilly and Luke must set aside their strong attraction for one another and focus on the task of retrieving what is stolen.
"Desert Belle": Her love wasn't for sale. Neither was her land.
The Willingham sister saga continues as Belle is propositioned by the man wanting their land. When she goes investigating as to why he would want a woman like her, she discovered a legend that said there was gold on the Rocking W ranch. She asks Jacob McCammon, the man who is quickly stealing her heart, to help her find it. Together, the two run up against men hungry for what they have and must fight for their lives.
"Desert Daisy": With her sisters gone, it was up to her to save the ranch.
While Daisy Willingham is struggling to prove her worth as the youngest Willingham sister and to show her friend, Daniel McCammon, that she is all woman and not a mere girl, she hears rumors of gold buried on her land. Further investigation shows that the man after their land has a treasure map. Daisy and Daniel steal the map and must fight for their lives against a man who will stop at nothing to gain control of what he wants.

    Four Fiesty Western Women
Would you consider the audio edition of Flowers of the Desert to be better than the print version?
Audio is always better in my opinion because the listener can multi-task while listening and also it's fun to hear the voices !
Who was your favorite character and why?
Rose is the oldest of the four sisters and is the strong one that keeps the family together. She is the sensible one who still prefers to dress like a lady instead of a cowboy. I could really relate to her as a woman who enjoys taking care of business !
    Which scene was your favorite?
I laughed out load when one of the sisters discovered that their new "house" that was left to them by a deceased family member was actually a hole in the ground. The sisters were so shocked by this but then they made the best of it and Rose turned it into a cozy little home.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
An extreme reaction is not exactly required to enjoy this book. Just listening to the funny goings on that the sisters had to endure and living their lives vicariously was a most enjoyable experience.

STORY LINE: A collection of short stories. Although a few years old these are terrific stories. They kept my attention and made my long commute a joy.

    Great PDK short stories

Yes. If you are a fan of short fiction of any kind this is a book that will be of interest. Philip K. Dick was a genuine legend.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Disappointment that there weren't more stories in it. It's a collection of short stories.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
I hadn't heard this narrator before, but I must say that Ray didn't intrude on the stories which is a the sign of a very good narrator in my opinion.
Could you see The Unreconstructed M and Other Stories being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
Yes, though some would be hard to realise in TV format.

15 EXCITING ROUNDS OF TOUGH BOXING TALES
Compiled by author and Hardboiled editor Gary Lovisi, this collection of gritty stories set in the world of boxing (as the title clearly indicates) goes the full 15-round distance and covers the gamut from pulpy to poignant.
Most of the stories are written especially for this anthology, but there are a handful of reprints, including a quirky yet curiously charming one from 1948 by Penelope Stanhope, a British writer.
Mike Black's "Lost Rounds" is a particularly memorable, but each of the stories packs its own powerful punch.
Full Disclosure: One of the entries is by some character named Dundee, who is proud to be part of the lineup.

  • Cries for Help, Various: Stories Audiobook by Padgett Powell

Title: Cries for Help, Various: Stories
    Author: Padgett Powell
    Narrator: Padgett Powell
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 36 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-11-15
    Publisher: Catapult
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
Genres: Fiction, Short Stories & Anthologies
    Publisher's Summary:
From the highly acclaimed author of Edisto and The Interrogative Mood, Padgett Powell's new collection of stories, Cries for Help, Various Stories, follows his mentor Donald Barthelme's advice that "wacky mode must "break their hearts". The surrealistic and comical terrain of most of the 44 stories here is grounded by a real preoccupation with longing, fear, work, loneliness, and cultural nostalgia. These universal concerns are given exhilarating life by way of Powell's "wit, his...dazzling turns of phrase" (Scott Spencer).
In "Joplin and Dickens", the musician and writer meet as emotionally needy students in an American grade school; in "Change of Life", a father ponders whether getting new clothes for the family or the patriotic purchase of a "new Government Cookie Flyer" would be more meaningful. In "The Imperative Mood", giving orders to others "Fall back and regroup" leads less to power than to rumination.
Padgett Powell's language is both lofty and low-down, his tone cranky and heartfelt, exuberant and inconsolable. His characters rebel against convention and ambition, hoping to maintain their very sanity by doing so. Even the most hilarious or fantastical stories in Cries for Help, Various ring gloriously, poignantly, true.

    Amazing!
What did you love best about Rite of Passage: A Short Story of A Young Teen Trying to Make it Right, from Killing his Younger Brother?
Not to give away a spoiler but the ending was one of the best I've come across in a while when it comes to audiobook stories.
What other book might you compare Rite of Passage: A Short Story of A Young Teen Trying to Make it Right, from Killing his Younger Brother to and why?
There is not a particular book that comes to mind.
What about Steve Chases performance did you like?
The narrator Steve Chase, did a excellent job in narrating the story, making important moments like the accidental death with using the gun, very real. I could feel as if I was there every minute of the story.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, it kept my attention from the beginning to the end.
    Any additional comments?
The author's word section was quite touching and was a great start to such a wonderful short audiobook.
    Hauntingly beautiful
I really liked this short, meaningful story. The author states that it was originally written as a screen play and after listening to it I'd love to see it as a film. As the story unfolded I found myself pulled into the story. Well written with deep meaning and interesting characters (that I'd like to know more about!) this is a story about life choices, making up for the past and what happens after death. I couldn't get this out of my head and found myself dwelling on it hours after I finished it. It has a great ending that is quite thought provoking. It's just under an hour long which is the perfect length for a gym session or commute. I'm new to audiobooks but after this book I will definitely get more!
Great voice actror and short story
Would you listen to Rite of Passage: A Short Story of A Young Teen Trying to Make it Right, from Killing his Younger Brother again? Why?
Yes I would, it's a nice short story. I felt like the little about the author bio was touching and real. I cried. The audio book is nice and short so you could listen to it on your way to and from work.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The German shepherd. I have a German Shepherd and I enjoyed that little added part to the book.
Have you listened to any of Steve Chases other performances before? How does this one compare?
    No I haven't.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
His work is done, he has saved 100 souls and can now move on.

    Title: Providence Noir
    Author: Ann Hood - editor

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 24 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-18-15
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 2 votes
Genres: Fiction, Short Stories & Anthologies
    Publisher's Summary:
From the introduction by Ann Hood: "Providence was founded in 1636 by a rogue named Roger Williams. Williams escaped here when Massachusetts was ready to deport him back to England. In the almost 400 years since, we've become infamous for all sorts of crimes and misdemeanors, including serving as home base for the Patriarca crime family for decades. My very own Uncle Eddie - I can hear Mama Rose screaming at me: 'He wasn't a blood relative! He was related through marriage!' - was gunned down in the Silver Lake section of town in 1964, just a year after he drove me in his white Cadillac convertible in a parade as the newly crowned Little Miss Natick. The writer Geoffrey Wolff told me that once he went to a barber in Princeton, New Jersey, and the barber asked him where he was from. 'Providence,' Wolff told him. The barber put down his scissors, raised his hands in the air, and said, 'Providence? Don't shoot!' I've asked 14 of my favorite writers to contribute short stories to Providence Noir. We have stories to make you shiver, stories to make you think, stories that will show you my beautiful, noirish city in a way its never been highlighted before."
    Critic Reviews:
"Providence, of course, has a history of crime, the mob, corruption and other goodies. In this collection of 15 stories...we are given a darkly hued tour of the city in all its nooks and crannies by such excellent writers as Hood herself, John Searles, Bruce DeSilva, Peter Farrelly, Elizabeth Strout, Hester Kaplan and others, each with their own style, tone and sly approach that will keep you reading, waiting for the sudden murder, the end of troubled relationships, the discovery of bones.... [A] wonderful collection." (Providence Journal)
"John Searles's 'The Pig' combines a touching examination of pathos and mystery. Robert Leuci's 'The Vengeance Taker' is a powerful and ultimately creepy story of earned revenge. LaShonda Katrice Barnett's 'Waltz Me Once Again' is a compelling story of violence and tragedy. Thomas Cobb performs the remarkable feat of making a simple round of golf into a surprisingly suspenseful tale, '$1,000 Nassau'. And Peter Farrelly's 'The Saturday Night Before Easter Sunday' closes out the volume with a superb - and hilarious - inside look at the world of novelists, phonies, publishers, and schemers." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Interesting Read
Didn't really know much about Providence before reading this. I don't know how accurately the various stories portray the city, but they're very interesting, very well written - several with ironic twists along the way.
it was fun to relate to all the local references
Most of the stories were very intriguing. Being from Providence, it was fun to relate to all the local references.
    Great book. Love Anne Hood
    Great book. Love Anne Hood!
    Not very good.
Seemed as if short stories were unfinished.
    Compelling Collection of Stories
I was initially drawn to this book because of the setting. I'm from Massachusetts, and spent a lot of time in the Providence, RI area. That, coupled with the fact that I love the noir genre, got me to open the book.

Title: Beethoven Was One-Sixteenth Black, and Other Stories
    Author: Nadine Gordimer
    Narrator: David Colacci, Susan Ericksen
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 5 hrs
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-14-15
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 2 votes
Genres: Fiction, Short Stories & Anthologies
    Publisher's Summary:
In this collection of new stories, Nadine Gordimer crosses the frontiers of politics, memory, sexuality, and love with the fearless insight that is the hallmark of her writing.
In the title story, a middle-aged academic who had been an antiapartheid activist embarks on an unadmitted pursuit of the possibilities for his own racial identity in his great-grandfather's fortune-hunting interlude of living rough on diamond diggings in South Africa, his young wife far away in London. "Dreaming of the Dead" conjures up a lunch in a New York Chinese restaurant where Susan Sontag and Edward Saïd return in surprising new avatars as guests in the dream of a loving friend. The historian in "History" is a parrot who confronts people with the scandalizing voice reproduction of quarrels and clandestine love talk on which it has eavesdropped. "Alternative Endings" considers the way writers make arbitrary choices in how to end stories - and offers three, each relating the same situation but with a different resolution, arrived at by three senses: sight, sound, and smell.
