A puzzler of a tale about a dead bookshop owner, a priceless cache of first editions, and a deadly secret taken to the grave
It's no mystery who killed Robert Ripple, owner of Precious Finds Bookstore in Pokesville, Pennsylvania. It was Agatha Christie - or rather, a large carton of valuable Christie hardcovers that the not-so-young Ripple was attempting to lift when his heart gave out. The real question is why the so-called Friends of England, who meet regularly in the back room of Ripple's literary emporium, are so eager to keep the place open after its proprietor's death. Certainly it must have something to do with the Friends' past lives as the associates of a slain New York mobster. Whatever their plan is, they'll need the help of Tanya Tripp, Ripple's recently hired and completely unsuspecting assistant, if they want to pull it off. But despite her trustworthy appearance, Tanya may well be hatching a scheme of her own.
For over four decades, Peter Lovesey has occupied an honored place as one of crime fictions best and brightest. With "Remaindered", he offers his listeners a delectable tidbit about books and those who live - and die - for them.

Not the best work by Peter Lovesey
Peter Lovesey is an award-winning, contemporary mystery author who specializes in British police procedurals, both contemporary and historical. This short story was written for The Mysterious Bookshop's Bibliomystery series.
Agatha Christie murdered Robert Ripple. Well...more specifically, Robert Ripple, a bookstore owner, had a heart attack while moving a box of first edition Christie novels. Robert had no heirs and no mourners, except for his recently hired assistant, Tanya Tripp, and the three members of the Friends of England, who meet in his bookstore on Friday nights. Tanya continues to run the bookstore while the attorneys look for both a will and any heirs; and she discovers that the box of first edition Christies may be worth substantially more than the $500 that Robert paid for them. As Robert did not keep any sort of records, Tanya is soon tempted by them. There are more thieves in the story, though, as it turns out the Friends of England are former members of Butch Rafferty's gang, and they have their own ideas about the disposition of Robert's bookstore.
Peter Lovesey has become one of my favorite authors. His writing flows very well, and I feel so drawn in to the books that it seems as though I am not really reading them. However, I don't think this short story is one of his best efforts. It may be because it is set in the US and his usual setting is the UK. None of the characters felt very sympathetic to me, and come to think of it, there was really no mystery at all, just secrets about the characters that the author reveals throughout the story. It was set in the fictional town of Poketown, Pennsylvania, but at one point, Lovesey refers to "..an open verdict was returned at the inquest." Hmmm...I'm guessing that Lovesey just dashed this one out for The Mysterious Bookshop and didn't really care too much about it.
I gave it three stars, but that was probably generous, and only because I enjoy the rest of Peter Lovesey's work. I think if it were another author, I would likely have give it two stars.
    Not Lovesey's Best, but Worthwhile
    Lots of fun.

Launched by the summer '04 award-winning best-seller Brooklyn Noir, Akashic Books continues its groundbreaking series of original noir anthologies. Each book is comprised of all-new stories, each one set in a distinct neighborhood or location within the respective city. Mehrotra, Hartosh Singh Bal, Hirsh Sawhney, Tabish Khair, Uday Prakash, and Manjula Padmanabhan.
The eyes of the world are gazing at India - the world's largest democracy. But the books you read about this Asian giant only show part of the picture. Delhi Noir offers bone-chilling, mesmerizing takes on the country's chaotic capital, a city where opulence and poverty are constantly clashing, where old-world values and the information age wage a constant battle. Delhi Noir's 15 original stories are written by the best Indian writers alive today - the ones you haven't yet heard of but should have. They are veteran authors who have appeared on the Booker Prize short list and budding geniuses who your grandchildren will read about in English class. Delhi Noir is a world of sex in parks, male prostitution, and vigilante rickshaw drivers. It is one plagued by religious riots, soulless corporate dons, and murderous servants. This is India uncut, the one you're missing out on because mainstream publishing houses and glossy magazines can't stomach it.

    Five Stars
    GOOD
    Delhi Noir
The ancient Indian capital is the latest venue of the Noir Series and "India Uncut" is the most apt description that comes to mind. A talented line-up of writers, including both seasoned and new, tell tales of an urban existence unadulterated by political correctness, the agendas of governments and corporations, or the common perception of modern India as an emerging, secular superpower. Delhi Noir proves to be a thoroughly vivid, entertaining and insightful read. In editor Hirsh Sawhney's own words: "It's only natural that Delhi's book buying and publishing citizens would avoid such writing. Any insight into their hometown's ugly entrails would threaten their guilt-free gilded existence and the bubble of nationalistic euphoria in which their lives are contained."
    Weak Mysteries
What I enjoyed most about the stories in this collection was the atmosphere and ambience of another culture. I could see and almost smell the setting, and I definitely wanted to eat Indian cuisine while reading this book. What I liked least was the "mystery" in each story. Hardly. To me, these read like stories by short-story writers who don't write or maybe even read mysteries, but who were asked to or volunteered to write a "mystery" story for this collection. There's one story in this collection that I read twice, trying to figure out what, exactly, the crime or mystery was: never did figure it out.
    Very noir
Delhi Noir is an interesting collection of stories written by new and old writers! The organization by neighborhood was especially fun for those of us who are well familiar with Delhi and the stories do reflect something of the dark side of these places.

Collection of short stories related to cocaine
This collection of 17 stories though uneven at times, as might expected, is all in all a worthwhile read. I particularly enjoyed Ten Keys by Lee Child about a guy trying to rip off drug dealers; Susan Straight's Poinciana about a strung out hooker;Chemistry by Robert Ward about the set up in a bar of a self styled stud; Golden Pacific by Nina Revoyr about the sad life of a 13 year old girl forced into prostitution;Sentimental Value by Manuel Ramos about a former star athlete who was seriously injured in Vietnam; Just Surviving Another day by Detrice Jones about the day to day struggle for survival of a black schoolgirl;and Bill Moody's Camaro Blue about a jazz musician who ends up touched romantically by the death of a car thief.
    Mesmerizing read. Highly recommended
A series of short stories that will ring familiar to those who have journeyed down this path, and horrify those who have not. Great read.
Some stories good, others not so much
As someone else had posted, it doesn't expose the true darkness that cocaine addiction can manifest in a person. More sugar coated stories not raw depravity
    Just Say No
Meh. Only really satisfying story was Laura Lippman's, which is available in her anthology of short stories all of which rock.
    A quick read
I bought and read this book with "The Speed Chronicles." They function well as a pair. I ended up looking for other books by many of the anthology contributors. I thought this book was great. The stories are both humorous and heartbreaking as well as accurate. I strongly recommend both books.

"Bums" is a short story from the collection Twin Cities Noir.
Brand-new stories from John Jodzio, Tom Kaczynski, and Peter Schilling, Jr., in addition to the original volume's stories by David Housewright, Steve Thayer, Judith Guest, Mary Logue, Bruce Rubenstein, K.J. Erickson, William Kent Krueger, Ellen Hart, Brad Zellar, Mary Sharratt, Pete Hautman, Larry Millett, Quinton Skinner, Gary Bush, and Chris Everheart.
St. Paul was originally called Pig's Eye's Landing and was named after Pig's Eye Parrant - trapper, moonshiner, and proprietor of the most popular drinking establishment on the Mississippi. Traders, river rats, missionaries, soldiers, land speculators, fur trappers, and Indian agents congregated in his establishment and made their deals. When Minnesota became a territory in 1849, the town leaders, realizing that a place called Pig's Eye might not inspire civic confidence, changed the name to St. Paul, after the largest church in the city... Across the river, Minneapolis has its own sordid story. By the turn of the 20th century it was considered one of the most crooked cities in the nation. Mayor Albert Alonzo Ames, with the assistance of the chief of police, his brother Fred, ran a city so corrupt that according to Lincoln Steffans its 'deliberateness, invention, and avarice has never been equaled.' As recently as the mid-'90s, Minneapolis was called 'Murderopolis' due to a rash of killings that occurred over a long hot summer...Every city has its share of crime, but what makes the Twin Cities unique may be that we have more than our share of good writers to chronicle it. They are homegrown and they know the territory - how the cities look from the inside, out...

Great performance of a satisfying short story
    Any additional comments?
At this point, Im a bigger fan of Will Patton for his reading of literature than I am of some of the literature he reads. I wouldnt have bothered with this short story had he not read it. Its a good short story. Nothing thats really going to blow your hair back, but its a simple, noirish tale that does its job. But its also pretty standard. In the end, youre not surprised with villains step out of shadows, etc. Will Patton does the most to make it worthwhile.
    Interesting story, surprise ending.
Love anything read by Will Patton! Attempting to delete this book, but listening again instead.
    So Good!
I wanted this to be longer because it's so good. William Kent Krueger has written a great story and it's beautifully narrated by Will Patton
    Fabulous
Ever since hearing Will Patton read Tree of Smoke, I try to find other books he reads. Patton reading Faulkner's Light in August gives that classic the performance it deserves. I would not have discovered Krueger's work without seeing Patton's name. I am so very glad I have now discovered this excellent author.
    Meh
Not interesting really. Fell asleep. Word word word word word word word. Doesn't encourage reviews. You know? At all all.

    Fabulous!
OMG, I loved this book! What a fantastic debut novel from Sheila Athens! This book made me happy in every way. I was sucked in from the very beginning and I couldn't turn the pages quickly enough to find out what happened next with Landon and Gina. It's impossible for me to imagine two people living their lives carrying the burden that Gina and Landon both carried and I felt for them with every emotion in my body.
What a wild ride I experienced while reading The Truth About Love and although I was completely satisfied with the story by book's end, I didn't want the ride to be over! This is the type of story I found myself thinking about for days and one I just needed to digest for a while before starting a new read; a true sign of a fabulous book!
I certainly look forward to reading more books by Sheila Athens and I can't wait to sink my teeth into her next offering! Thank you Ms Athens for thoroughly entertaining me with The Truth About Love!
Good Entry Point for the Romance Genre, Great Book for Adult Fans of YA
This is one of the first romance novels I have read and I thought it was a great entry point in to the genre. The story line, centering on two recent college grads finding love while sorting out the truth of a murder mystery, would especially appeal to lovers of mystery and young adult novels. I was so captivated by the twists and turns of the mystery and the will/they won't they aspects of the central relationship that I read the whole book in two days. I appreciated the conscientiousness with which Athens wrote the sex scenes, taking time to make it clear that each encounter was consensual and safe, without taking the reader out of the moment. I would recommend this book to long-time romance fans and first-time romance readers alike.
    Very Engaging!
I loved the story! I was never sure that Landon and Gina would actually find their life together. This story is very well written and really brings the characters to life. Being from the South myself, I could relate to the characters (after all, we do love our football heroes!) and I Gina's relationship with her family hit home. Congratulations to Sheila Athens for her ability to write a story that was so engaging!
    Great, heartfelt story
I loved this story. The conflict is engaging, the romance sexy, and the story extremely heartfelt.

    Members Reviews:
    Charming short story.
I always read 1 and 2 star reviews before I buy a book. The low star reviews let me know this story was very short and sweet. That being said I enjoyed it for what it is: an extremely well-written historical. The characters are lovable and I enjoyed the youth and vibrancy of the young heroine. The occupants of Half Moon House may be a bit goofy but this story was a nice change from all the cloak and dagger/spy stuff I've read in Regency books lately.
    Short and Sweet
This story is very short, but very entertaining. When William, Viscount Worthe, goes searching for the person who dared to question his mathematical computations, he discovers, to his horror, that the person is none other than a woman...a young woman. When he finally comes face to face with Jane, well let's just say he sees stars! LOL From there the story quickly unfolds to the HEA. The romance between Jane and William is really sweet, albeit very quick. I would recommend this book as a worthwhile read; I only wish it were longer. It's really well written, with interesting characters. Despite its short length it's still a very satisfying read. BTW this is a clean romance.
    Another delightful tale...
WOW! What to say, way too short, for one thing, intriguing storyline with powerful characters for another. Ms. Marlowe packed a lot of story in a few pages. Another delight! Well done! I can't wait for the next installment. Fantastic read! Don't let the number of pages stop you from this story of letting in the light so love can survive and thrive. Powerful storytelling! !

    Cute romance
An astronomer & a mathmetician who are sincere people but who are both a bit fish out of water find each other. Cute but very, very short which felt a little underdone.
IF A GENTLEMAN IS BRIGHT ENOUGH HE CAN LEARN A GREAT DEAL
Viscount Worthe (William) is a very self contained gentleman. He is an astronomer. He deals with life in a solitary manner. He is very precise in whatever he does. He receives a letter from an unknown gentleman pointing out an error in a paper he has published . At first he wants to find the man and punch him. So, he sets out to find him.
It turns out that the gentleman is actually a young lady named Jane. When he finds her, she turns out to be an intelligent, vivacious, and wonderful young woman.
William is unsure how to proceed. This short story lets us understand how he evaluates the situation and ultimately solves this problem.
It is a charming and entertaining short story.

    A Childhood favorite
My sister bought a little book of Christmas stories and poems at school for a few cents when she was 9 years old. My Mother would read it to us every Christmas for years. I have dyslexia and find it extremely difficult to read things out loud, so I was delighted to see it offered here. My daughter was enchanted by it and sat very still to hear the story. It was strange to me to hear it in a male voice but it was wonderful too. Thank you Audible.
