Members Reviews:

I desperately *wanted* to like it.

Spoilers-ish. Nothing too important.

Look, it's not like the story was boring. I was interested enough to see it until the end.

I just think this book has made me realize my days of reading mermaid books are over. I don't think I'll find another Tempest Rising or Sea Monster Memoirs.

What I liked:

Mermaids, Sam. (While it was fairly obvious what Sam's significance was, his character was still interesting)

What I didn't like:

Oh boy, where do I start? First off, the storyline was painfully predictable. It was the usual coming of age human-turned-mermaid story.

But wait! She's not just ANY mermaid, she's ultra mega SPECIAL mermaid! Authors, it's okay to have a protagonist who isn't "the chosen one". Reading about a mermaid who is gorgeous and perfect at everything isn't interesting. It's overdone.

The LOVE STORY. Or should I say, love paragraph? I know that fantasy novels love to use the soul-mates-instalove trope, but it's time to retire it. There was a slight buildup (the dreams, tiny backstory) but other than that, it was like, poof, here's a male character and he's in love with you. Also you're in love with him.

God, that was boring. There was no beginning to this relationship. It just went from 0-60 in a couple chapters. Half the fun of reading about romance is the BUILD UP.

Her dad. Protagonist lives with her dad, goes to visit her mom on vacation. I think in like the third chapter, daddy-dearest is unceremoniously killed off. Are we going to see the hero go through grieving, possibly helping to shape her character and give depth? Oh no. I think we got a few tears, then her magical sister makes her not care anymore. Honestly, his death was the worst part of the story. It was obviously quickly thrown in as a way to keep her with her mother. Ha, it's like she completely forgot the man who raised her for 17 years and didn't care because now she gets to romp around in the water with her new fish family.

The Judgement. (That's what the torture thing is called, right?) Alright, how do those rules make any sense? If you break a law, your family beats the stuffing out of you. Would that work in any situation except his? Let's say Morgan broke a law. Do you really think her family would take turns using her as a punching bag? What about the other mer-families? Would they willingly kick the crap out of their children/siblings?This so-called rule is horse s*** and obviously written in just to give a juicy torture scene.

Maybe this is the last mermaid novel for me. :(

I'm not ready for more disappointment.

Fairytales Do Come True

Fins by Ashley L. Knight is the first book in what I'm sure is to be an amazing trilogy.

Title: The Zombie-Driven Life: What in the Apocalypse Am I Here For?

Author: David Wood

Narrator: Jeffrey Kafer

Format: Unabridged

Length: 2 hrs and 39 mins

Language: English

Release date: 10-08-12

Publisher: David Wood

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 16 votes

Genres: Teens, Sci-Fi & Fantasy

Publisher's Summary:

High school nobody Kenan is doing just fine in the midst of the zombie apocalypse, thank you very much, but when his dream girl Katy comes stumbling around the corner, she turns his world upside-down. David Wood's first foray into young adult fiction is an action-packed horror tale laced with dark humor and even darker thrills.

Critic Reviews:

"Wood paints a horrific scenario of a world in ruin and a few survivors struggling to find safe havens and a reason to carry on. Powerful and disturbing by turns, with plenty of black humor along the way. The Zombie-Driven Life is a great read." (Alan Baxter, author of RealmShift)

"The Zombie-Driven Life is a fast-paced, zombie story that manages to be thoughtful, humorous, and surprising while giving zombie fans everything they love about the genre-gore, desperate situations and a big body count. The perfect book to devour in a single day." (Jeremy Bishop, author of Torment)

Members Reviews:

A good short story

This was an enjoyable short story, obviously the title lets you know that it is set in the zombie apocalypse. It has a touch of everything you want from a short story, details, action, romance, drama and an explanation. Jeffrey Kafer does a good job, this is the first YA book I've heard him narrate and he didn't disappoint.

Life's purpose/dark humor in a Zombie Apocalypse

What did you like best about this story?

I liked the perspective of Kenan. Cynical and and fatalistic while searching for the point of it all. He wasn't some super dude. Just a guy trying to survive and find his way.

Which character as performed by Jeffrey Kafer was your favorite?

Chap was the character he (Kafer) did best. His voice for Kenan was decent but he did better with Chap.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There are both funny and sad parts, and as a listener I felt for Kenan in his struggles, triumphs and losses.

Any additional comments?

Originally I read the novel and really enjoyed it (as did my daughter). Decided to get an audiobook version and definately wasn't disappointed.

Surprisingly uplifting!

This is the story of Kenan, a high school "nobody" who is trying to discover his purpose in life after a zombie apocalypse ends the world as he knows it. Loosely modeled after The Purpose Driven Life, Kenan struggles to redefine his world and answer life's toughest questions, all while battling to stay alive. Along the way he encounters danger, friendship, love, sacrifice, death and, of course, a lot of zombies!

Despite its dark theme, this story is humorous and surprisingly uplifting. You will find yourself rooting for Kenan as he comes of age in a very troubled world. The only reason I rated the story four stars instead of five is because the plot feels a little hurried and would benefit from more development. The narration is very well done, bringing Kenan in all of his youthful self-doubt to life.

If you are a fan of young adult novels and zombie tales in the vein of The Walking Dead, you will enjoy this story. At just under three hours, it is a short, action-packed, enjoyable listen.

Title: Seeking Crystal

Subtitle: Benedict Brothers Trilogy, Book 3

Author: Joss Stirling

Narrator: Lucy Price-Lewis

Format: Unabridged

Length: 7 hrs and 13 mins

Language: English

Release date: 10-04-12

Publisher: Audible Studios

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 13 votes

Genres: Teens, Sci-Fi & Fantasy

Publisher's Summary:

The hotly anticipated third book from Joss Stirling, featuring the characters from Finding Sky and Stealing Phoenix.

Crystal Brook has always been the dud Savant in her family; paranormal powers just aren't her thing. Dropping out of school with a clutch of 'E' grades and no future, she lives in the shadow of her high-flying sister Diamond.

On a trip to Denver, a chance encounter with the dashing Benedict brothers leaves Diamond head over heels in love and engaged to be married. Crystal, on the other hand, is unimpressed by their charms . . . in fact no boy can annoy her as much as Xav Benedict!

Back in Venice, their families assemble for Diamond's wedding and a powerful enemy seizes the opportunity to attack. Crystal and Xav must join forces to save their loved-ones, unlocking a secret that, until now, has lain deeply buried .

What the Narrator Says

"I absolutely loved narrating this trilogy. YAF is a guilty pleasure of mine and I really fell for all of the Benedict brothers! I think my favourite is Stealing Phoenix - she's such a fab character, full of fire (to match Yves's) and really feisty. But the big question is - who's your favourite Benedict boy? I think mine is probably Zed for his dark moodiness although I really like Xavier's great sense of humour." Lucy Price-Lewis on narrating Joss Stirling's Benedict Brothers Trilogy.

Members Reviews:

Interesting but I think the book is for teens...

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend the book as it was an interesting read but it felt a little childish to me. The book is about two 16 year old girls so there is some high school drama in the book that began to annoy me. The storyline was interesting overall if you can get past the juvenileness.

Any additional comments?

Past comments mentioned that the book was very confusing. I do not agree. I think the point was that the characters were confused as well, which was conveyed in the story line to the listeners.

Genius!

There was something about this book that I really, really loved - though at first glance it appeared to be the kind of book I wouldn't normally even pick up. You know the kind. Teenage drama-y romance. This was good, emotional, well written drama and romance, to be fair, and i did end up truly liking the characters & being relatively interested in their lives and loves, but all the same, not something I'd have bought without the strange spin - that our two protagonists, who have never met, each go to sleep every night and dream of each others lives, watching like a fly on the wall of each others souls! Intriguing, right?

The thing is, this book is one of two layers. There's the surface, where all the everyday drama is going on & then there's this deeper, darker level running like a vein through the story - a story within the story. It's that, that kept my interest. It's full of confusion, questions, intrigue, panic, & inner-psyche stuff & was unlike anything I've read before. The way the author managed to tell the second story almost without it being told. As if, somehow, it's our own imaginations telling us this deeper truth behind every detail of the surface story. It was so cleverly and emotively written - quite simply genius - & I'd recommend this book to any literature lovers simply on that merit!!

Also of note is how well read the book is. Both readers reflected their characters so well that it was easy to picture them in my mind, easy to like them. I knew and loved one of these artists already, from her reading of Trish in Divergent - but both of them were wonderful & added something special to my experience of the book. When, towards the end of the book, things start to spiral into terror, panic and madness, the format really came into its own.
