    Title: More than a Mistress
    Subtitle: Mistress Series, Book 1
    Author: Mary Balogh
    Narrator: Rosalyn Landor
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 46 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-12-11
    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 999 votes
    Genres: Romance, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
In this captivating novel, Mary Balogh, the premier writer of Regency romance, invites you into a world of scandal and seduction, of glittering high society and intrigue, as an arrogant duke does the unthinkable - he falls in love with his mistress.
She raced onto the green, desperate to stop a duel. In the mêlée, Jocelyn Dudley, Duke of Tresham, was shot. To his astonishment, Tresham found himself hiring the servant as his nurse. But Jane Ingleby was far too bold for her own good. Her blue eyes were the sort a man could drown in - were it not for her impudence. She questioned his every move, breached his secrets, touched his soul. When he offered to set her up in his London town house, love was the last thing on his mind.
Jane tried to pretend it was strictly business, an arrangement she was forced to accept in order to conceal a dangerous secret. Surely there was nothing more perilous than being the lover of such a man. Yet as she got past his devilish façade and saw the noble heart within, she knew the greatest jeopardy of all, a passion that drove her to risk everything on one perfect month with the improper gentleman who thought love was for fools.

    engaging and entertaining
    Any additional comments?
This is my first book by Mary Balogh and I must say I loved the push and pulls between the duke and Jane in this book. The two main characters fall in love, though initially both refuse to admit to it. Unlike most other books, here the arguments and strong personalities keeps the story more engaging and therefore the interactions and love scenes more intense. The duke's inability to accept his likes and wants makes him very mercurial in nature. Though a typical historical romance the behavior of the characters keep you guessing all the way to the end and so I loved this book and recommend it fully.
    EXCELLENT LISTENING
I truly enjoyed this book. Rosalyn Landor is an excellent narrator. I liked this book so much I actually downloaded the second one and am, yes going to download the third. If you like good romance and a good story I definitely recommend this series.
Slow, ... Is it the end yet?
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
A faster paced book, the story repeated over and over in the same book...
What was most disappointing about Mary Baloghs story?
9 hours of repeat, the story was only 2 hours......
What does Rosalyn Landor bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
She is has one of the best voices for Historical/ Regency romances.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from More than a Mistress?
    9 hours of repeat
    Any additional comments?
I am not sure I want to attempt any more of her books, her writing style was not for me. However some other readers may love her style of writing. Mine opinion is just that. My opinion
    BETTER!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
    Yes. Its a nice audio
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The way she was using her lady like ways!
Have you listened to any of Rosalyn Landors other performances before? How does this one compare?
    She's always good!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    Laugh yeah, cry no
    Ladies and Gents!
Rosalyn Landor could make every story a good story.

    An unexpected love story
Jules Strauss is a Princeton senior with a full scholarship, acquaintances instead of friends, and a family she's ashamed to invite to Parents' Weekend. With the income she'll receive from donating her "pedigree" eggs, she believes she can save her father from addiction.
Annie Barrow married her high school sweetheart and became the mother to two boys. After years of staying at home and struggling to support four people on her husband's salary, she thinks she's found a way to recover a sense of purpose and bring in some extra cash.
India Bishop, thirty-eight (really forty-three), has changed everything about herself: her name, her face, her past. In New York City, she falls for a wealthy older man, Marcus Croft, and decides a baby will ensure a happy ending. When her attempts at pregnancy fail, she turns to technology, and Annie and Jules, to help make her dreams come true.
But each of their plans is thrown into disarray when Marcus' daughter Bettina, intent on protecting her father, becomes convinced that his new wife is not what she seems.
With startling tenderness and laugh-out-loud humor, Jennifer Weiner once again takes readers into the heart of women's lives in an unforgettable, timely tale that interweaves themes of class and entitlement, surrogacy and donorship, the rights of a parent and the measure of motherhood.

    Good in between book
A Happily Ever After fairy tail. A good "in between book". Sometimes I need a quick, mindless, fun book in between the heavier and complicated ones. Then Came You is perfect for that. It had enough characters and story lines to keep it interesting. You know what you're getting when you choose a Jennifer Weiner book. Nice, predictable, chick lit.
The performance helped keep the story lines separate.
Not Alone in Loving Jennifer Weiner
One of my all-time favorite books is Jennifer Weiner's "Good in Bed." She is almost always perfect in reaching into the zeitgeist of the contemporary woman and extracitng not only the dialogue, but the heart of a moment in time. Her characters are at once warm and flawed -- and nearly always represent women we all know -- or are ourselves. This book is her at her best and will join for me with Good in Bed, Certain Girls, and Little Earthquakes. You are compelled by each of the women in this book -- Jules, Annie and India. Each give you reason to cheer for them and recognize their humanity and the struggles all women face to find identiy, meaning and purpose in their lives -- and the way we struggle with issues of identiy that are both internal and thrust upon us by the judgements of others.
The narrators do a great job of brining the story to life. You will not regret the hours speant listening and will find things to talk about with your best girlfriends the next time you get together.
    Jen Weiner at her best
I was already a Jen weiner fan. She and Jen landcaster are girlfriends in my head. This book was classic JW and I loved every moment of it. I also love how her books have a ripped from the headline feel. I caught the Dan Savage reference. I remember the lady on some talk show who spoke about being a surrogate only to discover that the couple changed their mind, got divorced and dumped the baby. The story feels so real. it has heart and soul. Well done Jen.

    Fleeced by Sands!!!
What would have made The Heiress better?
The Heiress is a copy of The Countess for more than 1/2 of the book. I am so disappointed. Why would Ms. Sands, her editors and publishers think it was okay to tell the same story in two different books with the same characters???
Has The Heiress turned you off from other books in this genre?
No - historical romance is my favorite genre.
What three words best describe Faye Adelles voice?
I can't think of three words, but I think her narration was okay. It isn't the best, but it also isn't the worst I've ever listened too. I won't completely turn away from books narrated by Faye Adelle, but they may not be my first choice either.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Heiress?
I would cut more than half of the book because it's a near copy of The Countess. The Countess is a much better book although when you get to the part of the book that isn't a copy of The Countess, it's actually pretty good.
    Any additional comments?
I can't decide if I'll listen to more books by Ms. Sands or not AFTER I finish listening to The Husband Hunt. I really want to finish the series and here Lisa and Robert's story.
    Pembroke Pines
Well if you already purchaed The Countess then don't waste your $$$ on the Heiress because the author basically made two books from one. She narrated The Countess with Dickey a/k/a Richard and Christiana and The Heiress with two other characters but basically told the same story. The Heiress tells the the story from Daniel and Suzette's characters. The Heiress Part 1, I basically skipped through and a good portion of Part 2 until they got to the part where Daniel and Suzette were running off to marry.
    What a Dissapointment
I listened to the first book in this series and really enjoyed it. There was humor in the first book that was quite enjoyable.
This second book was basically a scam. I realize the two stories would crossover, but I basically listened to the same story twice. Last few hours of the book was the only part that was original. Basically, the author was able to use 3/4 of the first book and was only required to add a little on the end.

    Loved It!
I LOVED this book. The characters were well-developed and the dialogue was witty and often humorous. The plot was even a little bit off the usual "romance novel" path, which made it quite interesting. But what I most loved is that is showed that the the characters of a story don't have to be perfect to be thoroughly likable! Not every hero is always honorable and not every heroine is a delicate, waif-like creature in constant need of rescuing. These characters were both "flawed" in quite different ways, and those flaws made the story believable and very entertaining. The story also managed to be pretty "hot" without a lot of graphic sex scenes. Can't wait for the next installment of this series!
    WOW!
I decided to try this book on a whim. I haven't been very impressed with the author's work in the past, but this was SPECTACULAR!! I felt it was very well written and the story was very entertaining! Definitely worth the credit/money!
    Start of a good trilogy
These are the kinds of romance that I enjoy most - less than perfect hero and heroine and a mystery to make it interesting. The story kept me listening to the end, although I had already read the book. The reader did a good job, especially with the voice of Francis. I hope the other two books in this trilogy are released soon on audio. In the meantime, I'm rereading the other two books in the trilogy until the audios become available.
    Bang, droop, fizzle
Anne Stuart is an amazing author (whose boots I am unfit to polish), and I literally could not stop listening to this book last night. It was just too, too good to spend time with that delicious hero.
I'm amazed at how erotic the novel was with so little actual sex involved. I'm also amazed that I loved the book and didn't love the story. It began well enough but I found the end was rushed, unconvincing, and unworthy of the amazing characters she brought together.
I'm still looking forward to book two. (But I now know better than to read it on a school night.)
    Different - and excellent
This one is terrific! It's not a "bit of fluff", but there are still moments of humor, and the reader is lured cleverly into developing feelings right along with the heroine. A difficult task, considering the initial actions of the "Hero"! I loved this one and Book 2 as well.

    Wow! Brava, Tamera!
I listened to this as an Audible.com download. I have a Platinum membership. Wow, what a book! The narrator was perfect for this book. She really could not have done the heroine any more justice and she did great with the hero, the heroines sons, and the minor characters. No easy feat!
The prologue sets up a spooky mystery that leaves a question hanging in the air who is the dead man? It is not until you are about a third to halfway through the book when the prologue begins to make sense. I have never read a Tamara Alexander book before. Something she does that I dont see as often as I would like, is weaving other subplot threads through her story. This is something I do, too, in my own writing but I see far too many books with a simple straight forward plot and little additional subplots or threads and themes. She tied them up beautifully at the end, too, which I always appreciate.
The heroine is a widower with two sons and is having a tough go of things. Her father was a physician and she served as a medical practitioner until the new physician came to town. It is cute how it is clear right from the beginning that the doctor has fallen for the pretty widow but she still hasnt recovered from the loss of her husband, who died several years earlier.
Great listen, I will probably listen to this again now that I realize what the prologue was all about. I highly recommend this Tamara Alexander book to anyone who enjoys Christian historical romance. Brava, Tamera, both for the story and for the craft in writing!
    Heartfelt Writing of Real-Life Emotions
Excellent writing, great plot and more than a prairie romance. Within My Heart brings western expansion to life in characters of faith, courage and honor. The character flaw in Rand is unusual and extremely interesting. It brought the story together in a most interesting way. I also appreciate the way Tamera Alexander handles physical desire. Just as she does other emotions, the author writes of real-life.
    Best of the series
This is a great conclusion to the three part series. I loved the characters and their struggles.
    i lovrd it!
i couldn't stop listening. favorite TV shows were ignored, sleep was put aside at times...just to hear more! I believe I've found an author who is a favorite far above all others. She will not disappoint..will cause ypu to experience all kinds of emotions...even cried in certain parts of this wonderfully written book! Enjoy!

Not Simon Prebble, but story is still delightful
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
yes; Although I prefer Simon Prebble's voice for Miss Laurens novels, this story out weighs all. The narrator's feminine voice gives us a lighter more lyrical voice than usual, but since this story is told from a more feminine point of view than most of Miss Laurens stories it works well and makes this story stand out from her more male Cynster stories.
    Overall it's a delightful story!
What was one of the most memorable moments of Tangled Reins?
Dorothea's first encounter with Lord Hazelmere at the berry patch.
What three words best describe Gayle Hendrixs voice?
    lighter more lyrical
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    yes
Could not listen to this narration
I have enjoyed listening my way through the Bastion Club and Cynster novels (more than once), and was excited to start the Regency novels, but absolutely could NOT listen to this narration. After 15 minutes I was done. There is just no way to become involved with a recorded book's plot or characters when the narration is below par. I immediately downloaded the book on my Kindle, so I could enjoy the story.
In my opinion, Simon Prebble should narrate all the Laurens books.
    Good book
I absolutely liked this book however, the narrator was horrible!! I had to will myself to listen just because I wanted to hear the book. At times, it was like she was reading to children and not adults. Horrible narrator but good book!
    Yes, it's really that bad.
I foolishly wasted a credit on this book thinking that I would go with the ratings rather than the single review posted here. I thought well, I've liked other books by this author, so I can at least use it to take my mind off my worries so I can relax and fall asleep. But this book is beyond boring. There is no plot. It could not even keep enough of my attention to enable me to sleep. It is that bad.
    what happened??
i have enjoyed many books by this author. i thought this would be one as well. i was so wrong. book is painfully slow. i have listened to most of it out of boredom seeing as how i am a long distance driver. i am very disappointed in this work. hope it is the only one like this. very talented writer otherwise.

    Oh, pluuuuze
Yes, I agree with previous reviews, Simon Prebble is great. However, that is all I agree with them about. The story? "ech." I wanted something light while I did some house/yard work, but that doesn't mean I don't want a worthy plot! But I guess, judging by the amount of books available on AB, that readers like Laurens.
This book has too much sex, and in scenes that last too long. And I can't believe *I* just said that! Ever heard the phrase, "Leave 'em wanting more." Well, this left me wanting it done; subtlety is sexier.
If you cut out all the sex scenes, the book would last about 2 hours. I guess if your spouse is out of town, get the book.
All About Passion: A Cynster Novel
I'm half way through and still waiting for this to get good. I've listened to Cynster novels before and they are light listening with good romance and an interesting plot..until now. Stephanie Laurens thinks there is something romantic about a man who will screw anything in a skirt without a backwards glance..until he gets married and this is no exception except there is no plot. If you are looking for a book with detailed sex and lots of nonsense in between this book is for you. I will leave work for my 30 minute commute and they are having sex and still having sex when I get home. I already know how this book will end (they are all the same and that's OK) but there is nothing happening in between. Unfortunately, the only meat in this book is his. Incidentally, how could Giles think Francesca is a gypsy when she is living in the house, wearing expensive clothes and riding the horses in the stable. Please!!! Don't waste your time.
I would have rated this a zero if I could
Terrible book! The characters are flat and not at all believable, the plot is predictable and constantly falls flat, and the "passion" is far too geared towards a male predilection for dominance and violent submission. Save your money for something better!
    Enjoyed it very much
This is the first historical romance I have listened to as it is not usually my favorite genre. However, this book was such a tender, sweet and erotic story I am very glad I took a chance. The story was cute and fun. The narrator was so good, his voice characters were really well done and added so much to the story. I am looking forward to more tittles by this author especially if they are narrated by Simon Prebble.
    Outstanding Narration
Simon Prebble's narration raises the passion and mystery of all Ms Lauren's book to the highest level of entertainment. His subtle changes of tone and volume make each character recognizable and understandable. I search out his narrations.

A few campy chuckling moments due to naive heroine
but plot was weak. My mind kept wandering.
This author has written many books under the names Jayne Ann Krentz, Amanda Quick, and Jayne Castle. She has a wonderful writing style and can make almost anything entertaining. But I feel like she ran out of ideas - as if she pulled the words charming eccentric naive romantic female out of a hat and tried to do something with it, again. Then she added brilliant business financial mind. The positive was that I chuckled several times. But the plot took away from enjoyment. It consisted of two main ideas. Simon takes action to cover up Emilys scandal from the past, and Simon plans vengeance on some men. The vengeance idea petered out. It was not intriguing.
Examples of things that made me chuckle. Frequently Emily says that she and Simon communicate on a metaphysical or transcendental plane/level/realm. She says sex will be a wondrous transcendental experience for people like them. She believed that. Simon did not. He just said what he thought she wanted to hear.
Another: Emily tells the footman to find a person from the criminal class to kidnap someone for her. When she meets with that person, she says are you a professional villain for hire?
The relationship between Simon and Emily happened too quickly - not enough story about that. He pretends to be interested in the same poetry and literature as she. That is why she thinks they communicate on a higher plane. But they meet and quickly marry. There is no interesting push-pull between them.
One odd thing about Emily. She was a financial genius in the stock and commodities markets, making money for others - think Warren Buffett. To do that she needed knowledge about the competence of managers in companies and projects. A little hard to believe she could have that knowledge, when she lived in the country and her only social interaction was a ladys discussion group about romantic literature. I dont mind suspending disbelief for a good story. But this didnt work. A better story would be seeing how Emily learned things in the markets and how she outsmarted other investors. But that was not here.
The narrator Anne Flosnik was pretty good, but her voices for men sounded weird. I prefer Susan Duerden who is good with male voices.
    Genre: regency romance
    Wonderful scandal
This was beautifully read and a captivating story. Amanda Quick showed true talent in bringing together the multiple parts to a wonderful conclusion.
    Substandard, to say the least.
Normally, I LOVE Amanda Quick, but I can't decide which is worse - the book or the narration.
Every single non-main, male character seems to say "ain't" in every other sentence (what's THAT about?) and the storyline is just plain absurd.
The reader is excruciating to listen to - the accents are appalling and the pace is agonizing.

    Good summer read
A fun romantic novel. The narration is great and made the story interesting. I enjoyed the story line and characters.
    Start of a Series
I wasn't too excited about the description of this book, but when I was looking at some of Putney's other books, I realized this was part of a series: The Lost Lords. This is book 1 and audible has 4 of the 5 books. I had already read "No Longer a Gentleman" and had the feeling I was stepping into a story that had already started because of the way it referenced other characters, so I was pleased to figure out that this was the start of that series.
I like to start at the beginning, makes for greater understanding and allows the story to build. Despite the bland description, I found this to be an enjoyable read with likable characters. I will be reading the rest of the series.
    First class
Mary Jo Putney is a first class author. Well written characters with a fun story.
Pretty Average Story with Subpar Characters
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
No. The story wasn't very appealing, and I didn't care for either protagonist.
What three words best describe Kate Rawsons performance?
I thought it was an average performance: Not bad but not outstanding either.
Did Loving a Lost Lord inspire you to do anything?
    Ha, no.
    Any additional comments?
I found the story under-developed, the plot points too predictable or outlandish, and the characters irritating. I didn't find much endearing in the female protagonist, and the male protagonist lacked the virility many find appealing in males of this genre. The culmination of each protagonist's storyline, and how much they mirrored each other, was a bit absurd. Pass right by 'Go' and collect your $200 for a better historical romance.
    Loved this book
Adam was the perfect hero and the twists and turns kept me on my toes

    Well Developed Plot And Characters
At first I just thought there's nothing new in the plot, but still I gave it a try and I surprised how the story amazed me till the end. My first with the author and the narrator I love them both. I'll venture another title from both of them.
    original plot well narrated
This author is an absolute delight...the topnotch narration adds much to a well crafted plot delivered with humour...laughed out loud. Great phrasing and language, steamy love scenes and super character development puts this author in a superior class of romance writers...tough to put down!
    Witty, Poignant...
After listening to Delicious, I was looking forward to this other book by Sherry Thomas, and hoping for another enjoyable book! In this, I was not disappointed.
Ms. Thomas' use of flashbacks is very well incoporated into the story line and her characters have depth. The descriptions are vividly portrayed and the characters, with all their foibles, are truly brought to life.
    ok.
Some good descriptive writing mired in a lot of whining and angst. I feel asleep toward the end and did not go back to hear what I missed.
    Love this book!
I love this book. Such an interesting plot and such wonderful, complex characters. And written with wit and intelligence. The narration was wonderful as well. If you're looking for something different and a bit deeper than the run-of-the-mill romance, I recommend this to you.
