Luke Daniels and a great LITRPG; enough said

There are many LITRPG stories coming out seemingly every day, some good some not so good, Ascend Online, narrated by Luke Daniels is a great entertaining experience. My personal favorite in this genre has been The way of the Shaman, series and I rate the first book in this new series just as high, maybe even higher given the narrator. I hope the next book is just as good; cant wait.

loved it, great story. And Luke Daniels continues to be one of my favorite narrators.

A humble hero story with cool action!

I love evolving hero stories where power ups or new abilities are tempered with ever more challenging situations! this book delivers that with entertaining action and new introductions that kept my attention throughout. even taking small 15 min bites of the story was enjoyable!

really liked this book overall, performance was top tier, story was interesting and paced well. the only negative is the listing out of players attributes and stats doesn't translate to audio well. like the scoreboard in ready player one or powers in sale on super hero's somethings don't work as well in spoken form. outside that this is an easy recommendation and I will be getting the 2nd book the moment it comes out.

Fresh to death

Don't get me wrong, the VR world is starting to become saturated and that's the only reason I was hesitant upon getting this one. Ripped through this in 4 days it was that good, beginning to end, I could not put it down. This is a must for your collection, highly recommended

Even better than the first

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely. RC Bray is a great narrator, and with Smith's story, this one is impossible to stop listening to.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Michael Everheart was very cool. It was interesting to see how evolved from the boy, Tin, in Book 1.

Any additional comments?

Highly recommended. Obviously, if you haven't read/listened to the first, you owe it to yourself to do that before this one. This is an excellent sequel.

Can't wait for the next book!

This is an excellent follow up to book 1. Nicholas Sansbury Smith has become one of my favorite authors! I am loving this series so far. Lots of action! It's not your typical post apocalyptic series. This series takes place 250 years after WW3. Humanity has been forced to live in sky ships where it is safer. The planet is full of mutated life and electrical storms. This is one of those books you just can't put down! Great narration by R. C. Bray! He is one of the best narrators out there in my opinion. Looking forward to book 3!

Thrilling, Fast-paced, Horrifying, Awesome!

Hell Divers is so cool, and this second book absolutely adds to the series.

I was already totally set on listening to Hell Divers II before I met author Nicholas Sansbury Smith at the 2017 Book Expo America, but I secretly freaked out when offered the surprising chance to talk to him. Hes a young guy, early thirties if I recall correctly, but hes already penned more than 16 books. 16 books! Can you imagine? All of that work has more than paid off in his fine-tuned Hell Divers series. Beyond a brilliant concept, Smiths writing is fresh, fast-paced, and chock full of compelling characters. Whats more, the second book in the series does a remarkable job adding depth and excitement to an already sophisticated storyline. In talking to Smith we were both super excited about R.C. Brays narration, and you will have to agree that with Bray the modern day voice of Sci-Fi this all-star combo is one that cannot be ignored.

Wow!!! You've Got To Get This Book!

When I checked and found that 6 hours had already elapsed I couldn't believe it. Then I realized, with sadness, that it was almost over. Book 1 was great. Book 2 is absolutely fantastic. Everything about it improved.

Should have been part of Book 3

Craig Alanson, please don't do this again. Don't take a side story, break it out and charge too much for it. This "book" should have been part of "Paradise." Did I enjoy this entry? Of course. It had RC Bray as narrator and Craig Alanson as its parent. But really, this feels like a wallet-grab. Craig, you have loyal followers. Don't gouge them or they will be less loyal.

As for the story, a nice subplot in the ongoing saga. Not up to the Joe/Skippy narrative, but good nevertheless. Neither Skippy or Joe are in think even. RC Bray is magnificent, as usual. And with this entry we flesh out more of the secondary characters. Perhaps knowing them better will become important in a future installment. I hope so.

Im still a fan. i just wish i didn't feel so dirty.

If you haven't read books 1-3, don't start here. But if you have read them, and you have splurge money, then go ahead.

But this felt like some editor or agent might have said: Take this side story out and repackage it as a standalone. You'll be able to sell it for a quick extra $20. Short-term strategy. Disrespectful to your fans. I'm pissed off that I paid $20+ for this "installment." Maybe $5.95. Really, should have been part of the Paradise book.

And yes, I'll buy the next bull-length installment. I love Col. Joe and Skippy.

1/2 Book for Full Price... I Felt Cheated

This is a new story arc, so I was barely able to get into it before it ended. While I knew that it was going to be a shortened book, I couldn't believe it when it ended after only 5 hours. I don't mind cliffhangers, but this one felt like it stopped at chapter 3. It felt like I got only 1/2 the book, but paid full price. Really frustrated at that.

I loved the other books. This I really did not enjoy the story at all. The author is amazing so I don't want to take way from him but it's not worth the credit

Waste of a credit

I've enjoyed the series but this was nothing more than a gimmick. The plot with Joe and Skippy wasn't furthered at all and the book didn't even finish. There were several instances where it seemed the author rushed the story to meet a deadline. Author and publishers owe fans more. I just feel taken advantage of and won't be listening further.

Started a love affair with hard sci fi

My husband and I watched The Expanse on Amazon Prime a couple of months ago. It was good but not great. I am not a hard sci fi consumer. I usually go more towards sci fi/fantasy or sci fi that is not has heavy on the sci part. I decided to check out the book that The Expanse was adapted from because the book is always better than the movie or tv series (it is a law of the universe which someday scientist will discover written with stars). I am really, really glad I did.

Leviathan Wakes is the first book in The Expanse series. The TV series uses seasons 1 and 2 to cover the story. There are significant differences between the series and the book, all of them lining up on the book is better side.

Leviathan Wakes takes place in mankind's future. We have spread ourselves through our solar system but have not quite reached the stars yet. There are humans living on moons of Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and in the large planetoids within the belt between Mars and Jupiter. People have been born, lived and died outside of Earths gravity. There are physical and cultural differences between Earthers, Martians and Belters which create a tense political situation.

The story is told from several points of view, all third person.

Julie: a poor little rich girl leaving her privileged life behind to fight for the rights of Belters

Holder: an Earther, now serving as the XO on an ice hauler

Miller: a Belter and native of Ceres who serves as a cop

Fred: an Earther and former United Nations general who now fights for the rights of Belters

Ninety-five percent is told from Holden and Millers viewpoints. It gives the story a much better diversity of scope than had it just been from only Earthers or Belters. There are several other characters who have large parts in the story. There is diversity in gender, ethnicity, politics, and where they call home in the solar system.

Jefferson Mays narrates this almost twenty-one hour epic. At no point did my attention lag or wonder. He really brings all the tension and wonder to life through his voice. I am currently trying to figure out how I can possible afford the rest of the series right now instead of waiting for sales or a birthday. It is just incredible. I think I may have started a love affair with hard science fiction thanks to James S. A. Corey, Andy Weir and the wonderful narrators of their books.

Addictive start and then a slump in the middle

When I started this book I could NOT stop listening. The prologue opens with a hook and I HAD to find out whatever happened to Julie.

Almost finished in one sitting

Darnit! Two days and I've already finished the book! I was hoping to take my time and savor the story. But nope! I completely lost myself in the book and only realized that it was early morning when my eyes started hurting. I stopped the book and put it away, intending to save it for when I was on the road. But again, nope. I woke up thinking about the story and ended up finishing the book in that day.

I won't get into details, but I will say that Senior Captain Wolfe is not brought back into the fleet the way I expected. And it made for a great and gripping story. Also, the new characters and new scenarios kept me riveted.

This book is REALLY not a rehash of the previous books. In this one, we see the war from a few different angles from before. And it's outstanding.

I again have to give my complements to Mark Boyett. His pace, emotion, and voicing are excellent. A great performance for a great story.

Highly recommended!

Slowing down but still great

This series is full of laughs and Joe and Skippy share an entertaining relationship but it may be time to come up some new dynamics for the two. Grrr Joe how did you out smart me again is getting a little old.

This is a bridge Novel

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

While the reading by R.C.Bray was excellent, I can't say that I enjoyed this story as I had enjoyed the first two books in the series. It bounces about from Paradise to Joe, To Paradise to Joe every few minutes. The first 5 hours was a chore to get through.

Has Paradise turned you off from other books in this genre?

Not at all. All series sometimes takes you in directions, or just seem to stall on certain events as the author gets his bearings.

I don't want to give away anything here, and I certainly do encourage readers to give this series serious consideration, but Alanson could have made this into a shorter story, and I hope the next book in the series will not stall out and become so repetitious as this one was.

running out of ideas...

Loved book 1, book 2 seemed long winded but still had me and this book leaves me wondering if this saga is done with me. I enjoy skippy but he has become very meh... same old same old and Bishop's interactions with him have become underwhelming. Perhaps some more drama between the two...? Idk... I guess I want more elders... or introduce the superior species.

Performance is in my opinion the best around. I Really enjoy Bray's work. He brings characters to life.

I'm a fan of both Alanson and Bray. But book 1 is still the best by far.

Great writing and reading

I have been waiting for this third book and it didn't disappoint! I have loved this whole series so far. Many times I literally laughed out loud.

Best Sci-Fi trilogy I have heard to date and the reading and interactions between characters are done to perfection! Bravo

What made the experience of listening to The Karmadont Chess Set the most enjoyable?

I enjoyed all of the books so far, I didn't care for the ending of book five but I am happy to report that as of right now there are two more books in this series that I know of

What did you like best about this story?

I have never felt sick to my stomach because of the ending of a book before but wow, after I recovered from it and had a day or two in which I could calm down I have to say that the ending is the most powerful ending I have ever read.

Don't be discouraged, this book will kick you in the teeth at the end but fear not because it still has two more to go.

heartbreaking... enthralling...

As with the first 4 books this series is wonderful. Way of the Shaman, Awaken Online, and Daily Grind are three of the best litRPG books I've ever seen but Mahanenko has a way about him that makes the book seem to never end. it traps you in and whenever you reach a point that seems to conclude it just keeps rolling on. The ending way a truly shocking conclusion whether you saw it coming or not but it still gives you that despite edge of hope to cling to and a fire to see where this goes next. All I can do now is wait impatiently for the already anticipated book 6.

I'm so angry!

This book was more or less like the rest in the series except if felt rushed and was lacking in content with some of the other characters. The ending was far to much of a cliffhanger to leave off on and there is no real sign in the series if it will continue.

I must say however that the ending of this series makes me want to punch things, a lot, ALL THE THINGS!

So I suppose it was good in a negative emotional manner.

Theater of the Mind lives on!

Once in a while a really good story is written by an author that is not that well known. This is certainly one.

I have heard Orson Scott Card talk about the audio book being the best medium for reading his books. My understanding of what he speaks of is that a movie takes all the imagination and places it on the director/producer to tell the story. The written book requires the engagement of the mind to decipher the letters on the page to bring the story to life. The audio book, on the other hand, allows the listener/reader to sit back and take in the story and let it play in the theater of the mind.

I listen to a lot of books and really enjoy most of them. But once in a while, one comes along that truly creates Cards theater of the mind experience. This book was one of those for me.

The narration was not up to par. The character voices were not well differentiated although the narrator did not really just drone on. I got used to the narrator by the end of the book but think it would have been an even better experience by someone else.

The story however, was well above par. This is one that draws you in and dont let go. The character development was well done with good pacing and did not leave you wondering who was who and what was going on. The story is about a video game that is so completely immersed in reality that while in the game it is easy to forget who you were before you entered. This audio book has such an experience in the theater of the mind that it is just like the game in the book. It is easy to get lost in the story and forget reality for a time.

Although this book stands alone as a complete story, it is the first book in a series and is a great introduction into the world for the stories to come. Cant wait for more and if this book is any indication worth every credit I will be spending on the rest of the series.

Amazing Depth

This is book one in the Continue Online series, and it's unlike any LitRPG novel I've read so far. Grant Legate works with an AI companion to repair virtual reality capsules. Grant throws himself into his work to distract from his recent loss and bouts of depression. When he's gifted a copy of the virtual reality game Continue Online, he finally takes the time to explore the game that the rest of the world is obsessed with. Once he does, he faces questions about the concept of reality and AI.

The author created an absolutely fascinating virtual reality world, and I can't wait to see Grant explore more of it. This wasn't a traditional LitRPG novel with hack and slash action scenes, level stats, and awesome gear. This book was more intellectual and explored more mature concepts. Like James, it asked more questions than it answered.

Hooked? No not me, as I sit in a corner holding myself

This book doesn't fail to excite and entrap me into this story and want for more. Like so many others who love this book as much is I do, I am now beside myself waiting for book 3. Dennis E Taylor has captured in my view, the addiction of old-school serials that hearken to the days of Flash Gordon and original Star Trek, but brings enough of the new technology and realism with a fresh mix of Bob comedy that has made this series of books to move to my top 10 list of best stories of all time. Douglas Adams has a run for his money now with Dennis and the bobs!!

THE FECAL MATTER HAS HIT THE ATMOSPHERIC PROJECTOR

I did listen to all of this and I did enjoy it. It is not as good as book one and it is really a filler or story stretcher to get us to the next book. We don't see or talk to the main antagonist (THE OTHERS) until 6 hours and 40 minutes into the nine hour book. When an author waits until two thirds of the book is over to introduce the main bad guy, than he is setting up the next book. Do not get me wrong interesting things happen and I am sure the biggest nerds of the crowd are tickled pink. I was starting to wonder if their was going to be a plot, a romance or exploration of space. There are a few confrontations with minor bad guys in the first six hours, but they are minor and are handled fairly easily. There was no challenge for Bob.

THE RISK OF GODHOOD

One of the main themes that is explored in the first six hours, is Bob trying to help too much. Every time he does something he thinks will help, something bad happens as a result. I loved this theme and I liked the way the author did not cheat, and made it tough on Bob.

BOB HAS NO JUNK

We have been told for years that sex is in our heads and I strongly agree. I also feel that love and companionship are extremely important to mankind.

An auspcious start to a new trilogy

Joshua Dalzelle's ability to write about new and interesting scientific achievements and phenomenon in such a way as to almost have me believe that they already exist is uncanny as much as it is entertaining. It was also good to see many/most of the primary characters return from the Black Fleet Trilogy, albeit, in changed roles. This went a long way in re-invigorating me with a new sense of anticipation as the story unfolds. I was particularly impressed with Sr. Capt. Celesta Wright coming of her own in this book and while not as swashbuckling a personality as Wolfe, her instincts and command leadership was every bit as rewarding to experience.

There's not any acknowledgements I can give to Mark Boyett that I haven't repeatedly made before on his other works other than to assure everyone that he continues to excel as a narrator.

Dalzelle writes another great book

Loved it, the action never stopped. Like the first series this was a great book.

Natural continuation of Black Fleet

While I very much enjoyed the Black Fleet Trilogy, I wasn't really pleased with the ending. So I wasn't sure I wanted to get into this continuation series. But I'm really glad I decided to give it a chance.

While we have many of the original Black Fleet characters, we have a new enemy and very different and several other interesting new characters. While this feels a lot like Black Fleet, it's not a rehash. The characters have evolved with the time passed, we have a mix of old and new ships, and Senior Captain Wright has developed into her own character with her own tactics instead of a rehash of Wolfe.

The book has a couple of twists in it, but they are kinda easy to see coming. But that's okay, because it made me feel like I was doing my analysis of the enemy properly.

While I felt this book's purpose was to introduce the cast and get us in the mood for the rest of the series, at no time was I not fully enjoying it.
