Do not bother, nothing learned about how to help yourself. Just a lot of talking.
    Poorly written.
This book reads like it was written by someone who doesn't have a good grasp on the English language. It's clumsy and doesn't make sense in parts. it lacks insight and wasn't very interesting. the narrator reads well though.

    Title: Shrinks
Subtitle: The Untold Story of Psychiatry
Author: Jeffrey A Lieberman, Ogi Ogas
    Narrator: Graham Corrigan
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 45 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-12-15
    Publisher: Orion Publishing Group
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 3 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
A world-renowned psychiatrist reveals the fascinating story of psychiatry's origins, demise, and redemption.
Psychiatry has come a long way since the days of chaining "lunatics" in cold cells and parading them as freakish marvels before a gaping public. But as Jeffrey Lieberman reveals in his extraordinary and eye-opening book, the path to legitimacy for "the black sheep of medicine" has been anything but smooth.
In Shrinks Dr. Lieberman traces the field from its birth as a mystic pseudoscience through its adolescence as a cult of "shrinks" to its late-blooming maturity since the Second World War as a science-driven profession that saves lives. With fascinating case studies and portraits of the luminaries of the field, from Sigmund Freud to Eric Kandel, Shrinks is a gripping and illuminating read. It is also an urgent call to arms to dispel the stigma surrounding mental illness and to start treating it as a disease rather than a state of mind.

    A trainee counsellors opinion
this was a good outline of where psychiatry originates. it has a lot about Freud.
interesting but a more comprehensive ending would have been useful.
    Pedestrian
Don't let the engaging sample fool you into thinking this is a risqué account of psychiatry's history. Rather this is a matter of fact telling of psychiatry's rise to medical professionalism. To slow for me, and by the sound of it the narrator too. Returned before the end, lifes too short.
    Fascinating history of psychiatry
Really enjoyed listening to how our views of psychiatry have been shaped by its history.

    Meh
Is there anything you would change about this book?
More balance with stories about people who required long term effort to find wellness.
Would you recommend They Can't Find Anything Wrong to your friends? Why or why not?
No, it's rather vanilla and doesn't really offer much substance.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Paul Aulridge?
Probably not. Depends on the book, though. I prefer a narrator who talks with me and doesn't read at me.
    Any additional comments?
If you are new to the concepts of illness from emotional or mental causes, this might be a good place to start. Otherwise, it is a very simplistic view, almost naive, at changing thoughts and beliefs creating better health. There isn't much substance to how to remedy illness and a lot of stories about patients who had an epiphany of insight and their problems just disappeared. Not saying that doesn't happen, but it would have been more balance to include o e of the stories about people who really hard to put work into changing over a long term.
    Rinse and Repeat
The entire book is just hours and hours of stories that go like this. Meet Bill. Bill has been struggling with pain in his _____ for years. After extensive tests, they could not find anything wrong with Bill. I suggested Bill had stress illness. After talking to Bill about his life and digging deeper into his (self esteem, or childhood, or family issues). We concluded Bill's stress was caused by someone at his work, or his childhood, or dealing with his parents. After taking care of that, Bills pain in his ______ dissolved.

    Title: A Cry Unheard

    Narrator: Charles Henderson Norman
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 13 hrs and 24 mins

    Publisher: Bancroft Press
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 5 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
What's one of the leading causes of premature death in the Western world?
    Loneliness.
    And whom does loneliness kill?
Who does it not? For every citizen in every one of the world's technologically advanced nations--from homemakers to businesspeople, from college students to school dropouts, from the elderly to the young--loneliness is an unrecognized, unguarded-against stalker.
Though it's never cited as the cause of death on a standard death certificate, loneliness, like communicable diseases of old, comes like a thief in the night to claim its victims. While medical science continues to focus on communicable disease, Dr. James Lynch has devoted his career to elucidating a new but equally potent cause of disease and premature death--communicative dis-ease--and to explaining its widespread but little-comprehended medical consequences. In 1977 Lynch became the first to document how loneliness contributed to all forms of premature death, especially from heart disease. His much-publicized and oft-cited best seller, The Broken Heart: The Medical Consequences of Loneliness, caused a social and medical stir both wide and deep and was translated into 10 languages.
Determined now to show how loneliness has festered and grown into a silent epidemic, and drawing on a lifetime of his own original medical research, he makes a number of provocative charges and predictions in his new groundbreaking sequel, A Cry Unheard: New Insights into the Medical Consequences of Loneliness.

    Educational
    Any additional comments?
This was a very educational book. I was interested in the book because I know that at my work. We all work weird hours and have odd days off. So we are not afforded a lot of family time or time with friends. We seem to attend many funerals of our co-workers and/their wives. So I was hoping to learn something useful from the book.
I learned more than something useful. While listening to the book I learned a lot about myself, friends, co-workers and even my kids. I found that I needed to try harder to spend time with important people in my life. I also realized I needed to have more patience with co-workers. That I used to think talked a little too much. Really it gave me a new understanding of the people around me. I know that I try to always to be kind to people because I dont know how their lives really are. But I have this new understanding of what human kindness can do for those people I interact with.
I learned that with my youngest son he needed so much more from us. I have tried to make a point to interact with him differently also. I finished this book about 4 days ago and I can already see the difference in our relationship. His attitude has started to change for the better when he talks with us. Yesterday I found myself thinking Wow this is what it was all along.
The author has been studying and documenting the effects of loneliness for many years. He has a very clear grasp on what we need to be healthy. Ive known all along it had to be more than just eat right and exercise. But this truly makes sense to me. But that is easy for me to see because every year for the last 18 years I seen too many funerals for people for are only around 60 to 65 at my work past away.

    Publisher's Summary:
Do you know what really triggers panic attacks? Are you aware of what thinking patterns create anxiety? Are you a chronic worrier? Have you ever self-medicated with alcohol or tranquilizers? According to mental health professionals, anxiety disorders have emerged as the common cold of mental illness. Every family is touched in some way or another by anxiety issues and, with ever-increasing frequency, diagnosable anxiety disorders.
In Take Control of Your Anxiety--an easy-to-read self-help book for the layperson--Drs. Cortman, Shinitzky, and O'Connor present the current understanding of anxiety: its genesis in the brain, its functions and contributions to human survival and growth, and its progression to pathology. Each of the five major anxiety disorders is featured in a chapter that explores its etiology, practical steps, and exercises for successful resolution and real-life case studies of patients who have overcome the disorder. The authors use some levity to teach their concepts, including Dr. Seuss-like poems, popular music parodies, and other easy-to-remember aids. A toolbox of simple resources and self-help techniques is also included. Most important, the authors emphasize a non-harmaceutical, evidence-based approach to mastering anxiety issues and living a productive, well-balanced life.
