Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 16 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
In Coming to Our Senses, cognitive scientist Viki McCabe argues that prevailing theories of perception, cognition, and information cannot explain how we know the world around us. Using scientific studies and true stories, McCabe shows that the ecological disasters, political paralysis, and economic failures we now face originate in our tendency to privilege cognitive processes and products over the information we access with our perceptual systems. As a result, we typically default to making decisions using inaccurate information such as mechanistic theories that reduce the world to extractable, exploitable parts. But the world does not function as an assembly of parts; it functions as a coalition of complex systems - from cells to cities - that organize and sustain themselves and cannot be partitioned and retain their purpose. McCabe also argues that we cannot describe such systems using theories and words. Instead, each system reveals itself in fractal-like geometric configurations that emerge from and reflect the structural organization that brings it into existence and determines its functions - a veritable physics of information. Thus, we comprehend phenomena as disparate as neural networks, river deltas, and economies by perceiving the branching geometry that organizes them into distribution systems. McCabe's key point is that form not only follows function, it doubles as information. If we put our theories aside and focus on the information the world displays, our perceptions can block hostile mental takeovers, reconnect us to reality, and bring us back to our senses.

    Startlingly relevant
The narration was a good match for the serious subject matter without making it seem trivial or too complex to follow.
    disappointing
How did this book receive so many good reviews? The subject matter gets an A+. Books like this one, which attempt to understand fractal patterns, predictability in the universe (via the patterns it presents), and the heuristics that keep us from understanding those patterns, are always at the very top of my list. I was extremely excited to read this book but quickly became disappointed when I realized this author was using the most amazing scientific discoveries of the last century to promote what basically amounts to pseudoscience. She continually used anecdotal evidence to support her point. worse than that, her arguments -- from chapter one onward-- are logically inconsistent.
    Fascinating
Coming to our senses is a must listen book.
Easy listenable Ng and an amazing adventure into reality as we perceive it.

    Book about cancer survivors
I've been a fan of Bernie Siegel since he wrote "Love, Medicine & Miracles" back in 1986. I had always felt that our bodies and minds had more to do with healing than prescription drugs, surgery and so on, but felt very alone in my believes (no internet back then). His book let me know I was not alone in my feelings.. This book, "Life, Hope and Healing" is along the same lines. It's a story of cancer patients and how the way they felt about it, looked at it and treated it made all the differrence in their recovery. Dr. Bernie gave them permission to feel what they felt, say what they needed to say, ask the questions they needed answered.. He has a very different way of treating patients.. He doens't treat them as if he's the professional and they just need to trust what he tells them, but rather, he listens to them, and feels he is learning from them...
He tells stories of people who are very ill and through discussing how they are feeling about their lives, things that have been eating away at them for years, come to understand that their illness is a direct response to all that, and how many, many, many people, once they figure out what is eating away at them, are able to reach healing....
    Love this but,
I love this and my only complaint is at the end of the meditation, when you're all nice and relaxed, a random narrator comes on and says, "audible hopes you enjoyed this audiobook." The person who says this startles you. The volume of this final statement is pretty loud and abrupt. This happens on some of dr. Siegel's other meditations as well. I wish audible would fix this...
    Excellent !
If you could sum up Life, Hope and Healing in three words, what would they be?
Exactly that ... Life, Hope and Healing. Bernie Siegel gives peace and hope to someone who is dealing with or dealt with a serious illness. He is so calming and genuine. Truly gifted. Listening to this book and other Bernie Siegel books has gotten me through many a sleepless night. You know the kind of nights that treatment keeps you up ? Or worry ? The fact that Bernie is a physician and has seen patients while in practice gives him a unique and special credibility. Bernie has been an Angel for me. Literally.
Who was your favorite character and why?

    Publisher's Summary:
The psycho-social stage theory couples with cognitive therapy that focuses on rational and irrational beliefs to produce a lasting change in maladaptive beliefs. The focus of the processes of maladaptive development and irrational belief systems also contribute to a lack of meaning or a meaning that is harmful to the individuals healthy image of himself or herself. The focus on self-development raises awareness of tendencies and biases that the individual holds. A transition to current irrational and rational beliefs direct the individual toward change, and the concluding treatment with an emphasis on providing a meaning and purpose for the individual to understand the events of life allow for a lasting solution for the individual to be able to maintain the changes that had been created as a result of the therapeutic process. The approach also provides flexibility that allows for the approach to be adapted to address cultural awareness and identity while allowing for non-discriminatory treatment of women through the same approach.

    Very brief
The book is a very brief overview of logo therapy enhanced by REBT. It is not a good resource or reference.
    Interesting but needs more details
Where does Psychosocial Logotherapy rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
    about middle
What about Carl Moores performance did you like?
    Calm and soothing
    Any additional comments?
There needs to be more research and information about this type of therapy. I am familiar with similar approaches but it would be nice for there to be a little more this type of therapy.

Applied Psychology for Nurses is an insightful audiobook which specifically addresses psychology from the viewpoint of the healthcare practitioner. It focuses on the connections between mind and body with an emphasis on how these connections can be utilized to provide a patient with the best capacity to return to health and to adopt a functional state of mind which leads them to a healthy and functional mind. This is a practical audio from a medical perspective. While the mark of the scientific and medical view is clearly evident on the work, it moves quickly into how to apply these understandings in a real-world scenario. Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Of the approximately 38,500 deaths by suicide in the U.S. annually, about two percent - between 750 and 800 - are murder-suicides. The horror of murder-suicides looms large in the public consciousness - they are reported in the media with more frequency and far more sensationalism than most suicides, and yet we have little understanding of this grave form of violence. In The Perversion of Virtue, leading suicide researcher Thomas Joiner explores the nature of murder-suicide and offers a unique new theory to explain this nearly unexplainable act: that murder-suicides always involve the wrongheaded invocation of one of four interpersonal virtues: mercy, justice, duty, and glory. The parent who murders his child and then himself seeks to save his child from a fatherless life of hardship; the wife who murders her husband and then herself seeks to right the wrongs he committed against her, and so on.
Murder-suicides involve the gross misperception of when and how these four virtues should be applied. Drawing from extensive research as well as real examples from the media, Joiner meticulously examines, deconstructs, and finally rebuilds our understanding of murder-suicide in such a way that brings tragic reason to what may seem an unfathomable act of violence. Along the way, he dispels some of the most enduring myths of suicide - for instance, that suicide is usually an impulsive act (it is almost always pre-meditated), or that alcohol or drugs are involved in most suicides (usually they are not). Sure to be controversial, this audiobook seeks to make sense of one of the most difficult-to-comprehend types of violence in modern society, shedding new light that will ultimately lead to better understanding and even prevention.
    Members Reviews:
    Harrowing but cathartic
A relevant book explaining the unthinkable actions of those who commit murder and suicide, a phenomenon that is fast becoming a regular theme in news stories all over the world.
My only wish is that those who commit these acts of murder /suicide would do the suicide first.

    Publisher's Summary:
You do not know anything about the world and about yourselves because you were ordered to believe. You do not know how to think, analyze, and all your "thoughts" are just a walk to the internal "cinema", where you will be told and shown how to live and what to be. And, you will have nothing left other than to do that, what your "inner voice" told you, and reinforced with corresponding sensations.
A human being and a computer have a similarity: both do not work without software (an operating system, or OS). A computer without software is a pile of useless metal. A human without software is a body, in which automatic physiological processes support life, but he cannot function, he is "a vegetable". Today, many people are familiar with computer software, but no one is familiar with the "software" of a human. Although human software is actually the "soul" that throughout many centuries people are looking for so hard and cannot find. Software and psyche (soul) are synonyms. The role of human OS is enormous: It is the basis of functioning of human psychophysiology.
This civilization has come up with a lot of modifications of artificial OS without coming close to even approaching the question of every person having natural software, given by nature at the time of birth. People had to live somehow. Humans differ from animals: OS of animals works automatically since the moment birth, it is not necessary to comprehend and study it, it just works. This is different with humans. So, artificial software was invented instead of natural. Although it differs from natural like papier-mâché or plastic apples differ from natural apples.

Words, colours, mannerisms, and other cues you don't realise are affecting you change what you think. The confidence you have in your ability to reason and to consciously choose what to do is caused by a series of illusions that scientists are only just beginning to understand. The discovery of these illusions will change the way we see ourselves more than the discoveries of Darwin and Copernicus.
Unthink explores the unconscious decisions we make, and covers a variety of topics, ranging from how we choose politicians and romantic partners to more abstract subjects such as whether we can consciously decide to move our fingers.
The counter-intuitive observations that Chris makes in the book include:
Chris Paley shows us how we can understand ourselves and others better, by having a greater understanding of the way that the unconscious mind has an impact on the way we live our lives.

    An Interesting book.
This was a good book but not a great one, there are others in this genre that I would recommend over this one, such as "The (Honest) Truth about Dishonesty: How We Lie to Everyone - Especially Ourselves" By "Dan Ariely" also on Audible.
The narrator and the quality of the recording were very good.
