    Title: The Infested Mind
Subtitle: Why Humans Fear, Loathe, and Love Insects
    Author: Jeffrey Lockwood
    Narrator: Jack Marshall
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 41 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-09-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 5 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
The human reaction to insects is neither purely biological nor simply cultural. And no one reacts to insects with indifference. Insects frighten, disgust, and fascinate us. Jeff Lockwood explores this phenomenon through evolutionary science, human history, and contemporary psychology, as well as a debilitating bout with entomophobia in his work as an entomologist. Exploring the nature of anxiety and phobia, Lockwood explores the lively debate about how much of our fear of insects can be attributed to ancestral predisposition for our own survival and how much is learned through individual experiences. Drawing on vivid case studies, Lockwood explains how insects have come to infest our minds in sometimes devastating ways and supersede even the most rational understanding of the benefits these creatures provide. No one can claim to be ambivalent in the face of wasps, cockroaches, or maggots but our collective entomophobia is wreaking havoc on the natural world as we soak our food, homes, and gardens in powerful insecticides.
Lockwood dissects our common reactions, distinguishing between disgust and fear, and invites listeners to consider their own emotional and physiological reactions to insects in a new framework that he's derived from cutting-edge biological, psychological, and social science.

interesting and even a bit fun
I enjoyed listening to this book on my rather long commute. As a budding entomologist who works closely with the public I found the insight provided to be helpful in understanding the reactions I have seen during outreach events and even some of my own emotions. The narration by Jack Marshall was a bit Bill Shatner-like but considering the material I think he did very well in presenting information that could be a bit dry at times.

    Title: Obsessed
Subtitle: The Compulsions and Creations of Dr. Jeffrey Schwartz
    Author: Steve Volk
    Narrator: Jonathan Yen
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 50 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-27-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 5 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
In Obsessed: The Compulsions and Creations of Dr. Jeffrey Schwartz, author Steve Volk ventures deep into the mind of Jeffrey Schwartz, a controversial, often combative psychiatrist and expert on obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
Schwartz is best known to the public as the man who coached Leonardo DiCaprio for his Oscar-nominated role as the OCD-afflicted billionaire Howard Hughes in The Aviator. But his extraordinary professional contribution, achieved through a lifetime of obsessive work, is a breakthrough therapy that has helped free thousands of OCD sufferers from their habitual behaviors, compulsions and irrational fears.
Considered a pariah among his academic peers, Schwartzs unconventional treatment methods draw on his fascination with the Holocaust, his experience with Buddhist meditation and his pioneering work documenting the neural circuitry of OCD. By teaching his adult patients to willfully rewire their brains and reverse their disease, Schwartz has challenged the prevailing view in neuroscience that free will is dead.
Veteran journalist Steve Volk, a senior writer at Philadelphia Magazine, skillfully balances the groundbreaking research of a philosopher-scientist with the story of a man battling demons of his own. Schwartzs most pressing battle may actually be the one he fights against his compulsions and social awkwardness in his quest to find some accurate, workable definition of humanity that can help us overcome our darkest, most primitive selves.

Good but little instructions on how to help yourself
Good, but wish he would've given more concrete examples and steps of how they we able to achieve the results. More "How to". The book merely talks about that they were able to. I was looking for more helpful advice for my OCD issues and this book did not provide that at all.
    A four-step process for OCD
I read the Discovery Magazine article about Dr. Schwartz written by Steve Volk and enjoyed it enough to buy the book. It turned out to be only a little deeper treatment of the article but it was well worth the price.
Schwartz's ground breaking work on OCD is applicable to a number of mental issues I think. His four step process for breaking the chain of obsessive habits is an amazing insight.
This is well written and a great read. I am only now beginning to see the value of mindfulness that is part of the process.
Are You Obsessed? Read This Book and Discover How a Non-Pharmaceutical Treatment was Developed
Very interesting discussion of the research leading to a treatment of OCD. Easy to read. While the author was describing the research and insight leading to a treatment method for OCD, you slowly realized why the researcher was so interested in finding a non-pharmaceutical treatment. If you have OCD or suspect you may have OCD tendencies, this book describes how the researcher put his method into practice to help his patients and you how you might benefit.
OBSESSED: The Compulsions and Creations of Jeffrey Schartz
Excellent read. The author demonstrated a great deal of compassion for the embattled scientist. It was refreshing to read about a scientist is both a philosopher and a researcher. I was inspired by his journey and chosen path.
    This is great

    Title: Sane New World
    Subtitle: Taming the Mind
    Author: Ruby Wax

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 29 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-27-14
    Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 19 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Ruby Wax - comedian, writer and mental health campaigner - shows us how our minds can jeopardize our sanity. With her own periods of depression and now a Masters from Oxford in Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy to draw from, she explains how our busy, chattering, self-critical thoughts drive us to anxiety and stress.
If we are to break the cycle, we need to understand how our brains work, rewire our thinking and find calm in a frenetic world. Helping you become the master, not the slave, of your mind, here is the manual to saner living.
    Critic Reviews:
"Ruby Wax has an extraordinary mind, and she has brought it to bear with trademark wit and searing honesty on the subject of that mind, and the minds of all us. Very few will be able to read this wonderful contribution to the literature of mental health without recognising some part of themselves, and certainly of someone they know. A ruby beyond price" (Stephen Fry)
"In Sane New World, Wax touches upon her own anxieties and fears with honesty and humour...it royally hauls a stigmatised fact of life kicking and laughing into the open." (The Times)
    Members Reviews:
    Loved it
A personal story and scientific overview with an exhortation to practice mindfulness (and how to do it) without resorting to woo woo and fluffy thinking
If you are ever bothered by the voices in your head then listen
    An out standing book!
What made the experience of listening to Sane New World the most enjoyable?
Ruby Wax has an excellent narrative voice & the content is easy to follow, interesting & done with humour.
What other book might you compare Sane New World to, and why?
    Steve Pinker
Have you listened to any of Ruby Waxs other performances? How does this one compare?
I haven't, but if you think Ruby Wax was just an annoying celebrity going on about depression, this book will change your mind, she is extremely intelligent, insightful & down to earth.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, I've listened to this book at least 5 times, because I found it incredibly interesting.
    Any additional comments?
If you have an interest in how the mind works & why we feel the way we do, you wont be disappointed.
    The best audiobook to date
Would you listen to Sane New World again? Why?
I would listen to this again and again, not just because it's insightful and funny, but because the content is so well written and expressed. The chapters are broken down into short concise elements that will either have you laughing or contemplating on hours to come. If you are at all interested in science, have a sense of humour or are just curious about the human mind (and how it can go wrong!), this is for you.
What did you like best about this story?
The way you can relate to Ruby's past either judgementally or empathically. She has many short stories which help depict the struggle many people face with anxiety or depression with a human face. It helps to be able to laugh through the problems as they come and realise that anyone can use the techniques and theory described here.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
The scene with Richard E grant and the shark cage - the point when you take stock of things and realise your time in spotlight may have dimmed. The way she is openly descriptive of shamelessly wanting to hang on to celebrity at any cost.

Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Lets be honest. You've tried the sticky-note inspirations, the motivational calendar, and the cute (but ineffective) "carpe diem" mug - yet your attitude hasn't changed. It's time to apply cutting-edge science to the challenges of daily life. While everyone desires self-improvement, we are quickly frustrated when trying to implement the contradictory philosophies of self-appointed self-help gurus. Too often, their advice is based on anecdote and personal opinion, not real research. Bestselling author of What Makes Your Brain Happy and Why You Should Do the Opposite David DiSalvo returns with Brain Changer: How Harnessing Your Brain's Power to Adapt Can Change Your Life.
Drawing on the latest research in neuroscience, cognitive psychology, behavioral economics, communications, and even marketing, DiSalvo replaces self-help with "science help." He demonstrates how the brain's enormous capacity to adapt is the most crucial factor influencing how we feel and act - a factor that we can control to change our lives. Findings show our brains are fluid and function much like a feedback loop: stimulants from both our environment and from within ourselves catalyze changes in the brain's response. That response then elicits additional inputs that the brain identifies and analyzes to further tailor its response. DiSalvo shows that the greatest internal tool we have to affect the feedback loop is metacognition ("thinking about thinking").Littered with relatable examples and tackling major aspects of our lives including relationships, careers, physical health, and personal development, Brain Changer shows you how to harness metacognition to enrich your life.
    Critic Reviews:
"Forget the self-help mumbo jumbo, DiSalvo boils down decades of actual research from psychological laboratories while giving us proven, scientist-approved tips on how to easily harness our maximum brainpower. From chewing gum, to writing our own obituaries to gargling with lemonade, you'll be amazed by the many ways you can rev up that powerful engine puttering along in your cranium." Maybe you will say, "Oh, no, this is another book that pretends easily to resolve my problems." And you will be partly right. Yes, this is "another" book, but it doesn't pretend; in fact it resolves problems in the real life.
I recommend the book to all people that feel even a bit more worried than usual. I think it will help them to regain control of their lives and to feel calm and confident in themselves.
    Members Reviews:
Useful Tool for Recognizing Some Anxiety and Beginning Steps to Overcome It
Although this is not the most-well-researched or perfectly edited book available about anxiety, I found it really helpful. The 'worksheets' helped me to put my problems in perspective, and also addressed some issues I have had with tortoise-syndrome (tucking my head back in my shell and ignoring my problems). At first I was frightened by the questionnaires, but by going through the book and completing the exercises I really feel like I am taking steps to deal with these issues in my life. Now I can graduate to other methods for help.
    I dont remember
Maybe I should not review a book I do not remember reading but I figure if I do not remember the top 10 then it could not have been worth more than 2 or 3 dollars.
    Horrendous
After reading through about half of this, I simply could not continue. A few things are very apparent:
-Lack of credible knowledge on the subject.
The points presented are extremely opinionated and do not even attempt to be objective, not to mention are ineffective at accomplishing anything other than blaming you for having a 'problem'.
-Lack of the use of language mechanics.
For a 'published' work, this could easily be confused with the articulated level of a high school essay.
    -Document had not been proofread.
Ties in with the above point as well. Even a brief editorial once-over would ease the plethora of linguistic errors. I'm no English professor, but if you're asking for a profit on your work there is much to improve upon.
-Reviews below are not of genuine users.
    Fairly self-explanatory.
    -Excessively generic 'tasks'.
Tasks presented do not offer any intellectual insight or noted expertise on the topic they are related to.
    Summary:
I am mildly annoyed I had essentially wasted a borrow on Prime for this product.
Tasks and workable questions are good and doable
Anxiety Workbook:Top 10 Powerful Steps To Stop Your Anxiety Now...-Exclusive Edition
    by Heather Rose
A workbook to help with anxiety and other similar disorders related to and part of anxiety such as OCD. Tasks and workable questions are good and doable. However there are some typos and grammar errors that need to be looked at.
Overall I think this is a great start to dealing with anxiety and I plan to pass this on to my daughter who deals with OCD and see If it helps her.
I received this book free of charge through LibraryThing for my honest review.

    Publisher's Summary:
Luck is not chance - it can be cultivated. This engaging guide shows how to attract "chance" opportunities, and avoid "bad luck," in ways that will dramatically improve your life. Why do some people seem to have all the luck? According to writer and economist A. H. Z. Carr, there's much more to luck than just the random caprices of fate - "luck" is an accessible mind-set that anyone can achieve. The difference between "chance" and "luck," says Carr, lies in our mental attitude. Carr teaches listeners how to develop their character and adjust their mind-set to pick out the opportunities for happiness and success that are available to us all, but which most unthinkingly pass by. This is no volume of superstition - this is a real guide for people who want to tap into the opportunities for a better life that surround us.
