    Way too anecdotal, misleading title
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I was hoping for a broader philosophy on raising kids, one that was...surprise...rooted in the tenants of buddhism. I found nothing in it relating to core tenants of oneness, natural unfolding etc. It's more of a personal story by someone who adopted older kids - that's great but I'm not sure her single experience provides the basis for anything remotely close to 'if the Buddha had kids'.
Has Buddha Guides Series #4: If the Buddha Had Kids turned you off from other books in this genre?
    Yes.
Would you be willing to try another one of Amy Rubinates performances?
Yes, the reader was fine. The content was lacking.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    Irritation at misleading title.
Anyone who is around children should read this
If you've been a child, know a child, have a child (or 2 or more) you should read this book. It is a beautiful work.
    Wise words...
I felt very moved by this book in numerous ways. Not so much a reflection of the Buddhist lifestyle necessarily but of loving kindness in general. I like her take on child rearing. I respect it and feel that she put a lot of love into it. I like a more fast-paced reader. Her voice is very gentle and caring.

Title: Evolutionary Psychology: Bolinda Beginner Guides

    Narrator: Miranda Nation
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 3 mins

    Publisher: Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 19 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Evolutionary Psychology is a uniquely accessible yet comprehensive guide to the study of the effects of evolutionary theory on human behaviour. Written specifically for the general listener and for entry-level students, it covers all the most important elements of this interdisciplinary subject, from the role of evolution in our selection of partner, to the influence of genetics on parenting.
This audiobook draws widely on examples, case studies and background facts to convey a substantial amount of information, and is authored by the UKs leading experts in the field, from the only dedicated research and teaching institute.
    Editorial Reviews:
While Darwin's theories paved the way for a general public understanding of evolutionary biology, evolutionary psychology - the study of psychological traits from an evolutionary perspective - is less understood. This introductory guide, written by UK experts Robin Dunbar, Louise Barrett , and John Lycett, shines a light on the theories behind this rapidly-expanding field. A collected and confident narration from actress Miranda Nation enhances the listening experience, making it easy for listeners to absorb the varied array of in-depth information, case studies, and anecdotal examples.

Great book, some things were wrong but key points were made. I'm going to read it again
    Excellent Introduction to Evolutionary Psychology
    Narration brilliant.
Content, just right for me with only limited psychological and evolutionary knowledge (I'm a Science Teacher).
    Particularly like the chapter summaries.
On to The Moral Animal next.
A must for the intellectually curious
Apart from a few statements that were asserted without evidence, this book is a good overview of Evolutionary Psychology and was a great empirical study of the human animal.
In the current social climate where the near religion of 'sameness' is repeated, it's a breath of fresh air to see what the science tells us about human beings with an impartial view.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in understanding our own behaviour; both historically and the internal drivers that govern our interactions now. It is a great jumping off point to spark your interest in my opinion.

    Publisher's Summary:
Popular author Taylor Clark draws on cutting-edge research in this enlightening exploration of stressand how to tackle it constructively. Using such divergent examples as Russian sub commanders and game show contestants, Clark shows that most people experience stress the same way. Those who understand how to accept it without freezing can accomplish what needs to get done.

    Fear Not!
Athletes and coaches call it choking. In daily life, it might be considered missing nerve. Taylor Clark tells us what this means and why it happens in his new book, Nerve. Some crack and some dont and Clark presents current research to tell us why and under what conditions this happens. The book is divided into two sections. The first deals with the neuroscience of fear, worry, and dealing chaos. The second considers how we might gain and keep our cool in day-to-day living. This was the most helpful section for me. The chapter on dealing with pressure and a second relating how astronaut Gordon Cooper managed to make it back to earth alive were the most personally interesting. Anyone who experiences anxiety and fear will gain deeper insight into the issue and will come away more confident. This is written in a very approachable, practical style even the uninitiated will appreciate. The reading of Rich Orlow is very good.
    Science-Based and well written
Would you listen to Nerve again? Why?
This book is grounded in sceince, but has a nice balance of anecdotal stories to go along with it. The writing is accessible and the voice has a good sense of humor. Very enjoyable.
Heartening news about grace under fire
What made the experience of listening to Nerve the most enjoyable?
The author seamlessly integrates narrative story-telling with hard science and with personal experience. Very pleasing that the author avoids cliches in favor of thoughtful analysis.
Who was your favorite character and why?
    Not applicable.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The contrast between those who freeze under pressure and those who manage their fear to perform regardless.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I wanted a do-this-and-your-fears-will-be-cured. Alas, this is not what the book offers. Instead, the author delivers solid methods to channel fear (nerves) into creative rather than paralyzing effect.
    Any additional comments?
Would recommend this audiobook to anyone who faces high-stress activities and has had a tendency to freeze (or flee) under pressure. The author clearly describes the mindset required to overcome these circumstances.
    Great! Sound Research and Application
I've been a practicing psychologist for 25 years. This is the best book about fear and anxiety that I've ever read or listened to. The author presents a modern analysis and cutting edge research on the subject. It is highly readable and easy to understand. Great narration as well. Wonderful book.
Have the nerve to listen to Nerve!!!
If you could sum up Nerve in three words, what would they be?
    Control, Certainty, Calm
What was one of the most memorable moments of Nerve?
Understanding that we are all human - none of us are superheros.

Worthwhile, but Like 'Angels and Demons'
Solid stuff well delivered (except for the sad attempts at accents). But... listener beware: the crisp narration often begins a topic with hard science them moves to squishy 'indications' and then onto flights of conjecture that confuse correlation with causation and prescribe campus-fad remedies that frequently conflict with earlier hard-science points made. All this in the same, authoritative, faux-reasonable tone. One must listen carefully to separate the good stuff from the faddish blather. That said, if you can be self-disciplined, this course is worth its cost.
explains life better than any scripture
What made the experience of listening to The Modern Scholar: Evolutionary Psychology, Part II the most enjoyable?
full of insight and makes you start to understand mankind
it realy explains why we are the way we are
What other book might you compare The Modern Scholar: Evolutionary Psychology, Part II to and why?
    so far none
What does the narrator bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
    knowledgeable and scientific
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    Epiphany
    it's Evolutionary psychology
Other than stating the obvious, evolutionary psychology is pointless and irrelevant to humanity and history it self.Great book.
    Cool Stuff
I really think the lecturer presents quite complex concepts well. I have learnt such a lot, and will apply to the science of climate change.... that is, why do we pollute our planet?

    Vango Notes
I was disappointed in this product...thought the review could have given, at the very least a summary of the entire chapter, instead of only parts of the chapter...The quizes were somewhat helpful, but not enough to take away the disappointment of the chapter summaries. I am uncertain whether I will purchase VangoNotes again.
It helped me pass my test
I purchased VangoNotes the night before my exam. I had already read the chapter and had studied a bit but not as much as necessary. The test was on the brain and the teacher had warned us it was going to be the hardest test of the semester. I purchased VangoNotes and heard it on the way to school. Through listening to it, I realized they mentioned key terms I had overlooked while reading and it really helped me grasp difficult concepts. When I took the test, I was able to relate much of the material to the audio I had listened to and I ended up with a high B on the exam. VangoNotes made all the difference for me, I will buy them again for another class if the book is available for them. Great Product! The practice audio tests really help you learn as well

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 36 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 107 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Who are you? Its the most fundamental of human questions. Are you the type of person who tilts at windmills, or the one who prefers to view them from the comfort of an air-conditioned motorcoach? Our personalities are endlessly fascinating - not just to ourselves but also to our spouses, our parents, our children, our co-workers, our neighbors. As a highly social species, humans have to navigate among an astonishing variety of personalities. But how did all these different permutations come about? And what purpose do they serve?
With her trademark wit and sly humor, Hannah Holmes takes readers into the amazing world of personality and modern brain science. Using the Five Factor Model, which slices temperaments into the major factors (Extraversion, Neuroticism, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, and Openness) and minor facets (such as impulsive, artistic, or cautious), Holmes demonstrates how our genes and brains dictate which factors and facets each of us displays. Are you a Nervous Nelly? Your amygdala is probably calling the shots. Hyperactive Hal? Its all about the dopamine.
Each facet took root deep in the evolution of life on Earth, with Nature allowing enough personal variation to see a species through good times and bad. Just as there are introverted and extroverted people, there are introverted and extroverted mice, and even starfish. In fact, the personality genes we share with mice make them invaluable models for the study of disorders like depression, schizophrenia, and anxiety. Thus it is deep and ancient biases that guide your dealings with a very modern world.

    Annoying style-political spin-Interesting
The annoying style is the author's technique of jumping into first person, and adding commentary related to her personal experience in obtaining data, interviews, etc. Its sort of a cross between a laboratory journal, a scientific paper abstract, and a freshman girl's personal journal detailing her first year in college. Some may find it endearing, I find it annoying, and distracting. I question how much of this book is accepted science on brain physical/chemical effect on personality, and how much is conjecture.
My listening experience went from mildly annoyed/somewhat interested, to highly frustrated in the few sections where the author attempts to explain political differences on brain characteristics. One example; due to the intensity of the amigdala firing at various picture stimuli, liberals value equality, and conservatives value justice and a clear chain of command. While there is some sideways truth to this, it is clear the author has only a "conventional thinking" understanding of political philosophy. I might ask her how more government control of distribution reflects the liberal view of "equality". That conclusion necessarily derives from the idea that some are more unequal than others, and only a powerful central government can fix the inequality, viola... equality. As for the "conservative" penchant for a strong chain of command, I would like to know who the author finds most enamored with the likes of Mao Sze Tong, and the wonderful tenets of the former soviet union (conservatives or liberals??). Your answer is also the group that prefers the iron fist in a velvet glove, or strong chain of command.

Startling insights into persuasion, trust, empathy, and teamwork, based on how we treat our computers....
The driver was insistent: A woman should not be giving directions. Despite the customer-service reps reassurance that the navigation system in his car wasnt actually a woman - just a computer with a female voice - the driver (and many others like him) refused to listen. There was only one person for BMW to call for help: Clifford Nass, one of the worlds leading experts on how people interact with technology.
After two decades of studying problems like BMWs GPS system, Microsofts Clippy (the most hated animated character of all time), and online evaluations that led people to lie to their laptops, Nass has developed a powerful theory: Our brains cant fundamentally distinguish between interacting with people and interacting with devices. We will protect a computers feelings, feel flattered by a brown-nosing piece of software, and even do favors for technology that has been nice to us. All without even realizing it.
Nass has found that the most powerful strategies for working with people can be learned from watching what succeeds and fails in technology interfaces. If a computer can make friends, build teams, and calm powerful emotions, so can any of us.
    Nasss studies reveal:
Nasss discoveries push the boundaries of both psychology and technology and provide nothing less than a new blueprint for successful human relationships.
    Critic Reviews:
"With the help of real experiments, rather than anecdotes or impressions, Clifford Nass uses people's interactions with computers as a window into social and professional life. The book is filled with insights about an increasingly important part of our lives." (Steven Pinker, Harvard College Professor of Psychology, Harvard University)

    Title: On Second Thought
Subtitle: Outsmarting Your Mind's Hard-Wired Habits

    Narrator: Dan John Miller
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 35 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 117 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Our brains are marvels, hard-wired by millions of years of evolution to boast a number of mental shortcuts, biases, and tricks that allow us to negotiate our complicated lives without overthinking every choice and decision we have to make. Unfortunately, those ancient shortcuts don't always work to our advantage in our modern lives - when we don't also think slowly and rationally, those hard-wired habits can trip us up. This intriguing book helps us to understand how our minds are predisposed to think about the world - and how to avoid many of life's common mistakes. Among the surprising examples of these mental habits at work in our lives:
Wray Herbert introduces us to 20 of these shortcuts and biases, explaining how they affect us in the real world and how they're being studied in labs around the world.
    Members Reviews:
Here's My Thought, "On Second Thought"
I found this book to be engaging as well as interesting. One reviewer had noted the similarities between Malcolm Gladwell books and this one.
I do agree that both author's works are captivating and explore brain science and social memes in an entertaining manner; spiced with insight, fun facts and candid stories.
I'm not sure how useful this book is, but it is a great read or listen to, in this case. This book tells of our brain's evolution and how we have become hardwired to certain decision making patterns based on psychological heuristics. After reading this book you may not be able to alter your brain's hard wiring but you will be able to (better) identify why you feel a certain way or make a decision. You'll have a better understanding of the route your mind takes to analyze choices, right or wrong.
    Buy this book if you:
    a) Want a good, light, non-fiction read about your brain.
    b) Want to be entertained and learn something about the mechanics behind your decision making process.
This book might not be for you if you are expert in the field of cognitive brain science and seek a serious, 'just the facts' style research report.
Main Points of On Second Thought
Wray Herbert's engaging On Second Thought: Outsmarting Your Mind's Hard-Wired Habits has three main messages:
    1. Evolved Brains: Our minds (which drive our thoughts, actions, and reactions), are evolved organs, constructed by adaptation over long periods of time to our environments.
    2. Brain / Modern-Environment Mismatch: Unfortunately, our brains evolved in very different environments in which we now find ourselves. This leads to our reactions, biases, and thoughts to be too often mismatched and maladapted to circumstances in a 21st century world.
    3. Choice with Knowledge: However, if we understand where our immediate reactions and thoughts come from, we can overcome irrational action and make choices that benefit our long-term goals.
Herbert is a journalist, reporting on the academic work of behavioral economists and experimental psychologists. The strength of On Second Thought is the breadth in which psychological and behavioral theory and experimental results are examined.

Title: Think! Before It's Too Late
    Author: Edward De Bono
    Narrator: Nicholas Bell
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 36 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-17-10
    Publisher: Random House AudioBooks
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 31 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
The world is full of problems and conflicts. So why can we not solve them? According to Edward de Bono, world thinking cannot solve world problems because world thinking is itself the problem. And this is getting worse: we are so accustomed to readily available information online that we search immediately for the answers rather than thinking about them.
Our minds function like trying to drive a car using only one wheel. There's nothing wrong with that one wheel - conventional thinking - but we could all get a lot further if we used all four.
De Bono examines why we think the way we do from a historical perspective and uses some of his famous thinking techniques combined with new ideas to show us how to change the way we think.
If we strengthen our ability and raise our thinking level, other areas of our life - both personal and business success - will improve.
De Bono is the master of the original big 'concept' book and his enticement to us to use our minds as constructively as possible should appeal to a whole new generation of fans.
    Members Reviews:
An interesting overview of new ideas
This book presents an interesting overview of his new perspectives on thinking and language, as long as you overlook his arrogance.
    Terrible reading
What has been made clear to me about this audiobook is that the ability to think is completely separate from the ability to care about the presentation of one's work or one's individual work ethic. The performance on this work is absolutely abysmal. It is clear that no one reviewed before publishing this audiobook either, because the repetition of certain sentences and paragraphs is readily apparent. The narrator also does not emphasize properly for ease of understanding concepts and reads too quickly. (Audible can speed audio up if we want that) i'm certain of this book is probably at least 5 to 10 times better in print... But it shines through that DeBono certainly has an ego and clearly did not care enough to ensure that the audiobook based on his work had any level of quality to it. Ultimately this came across as an advertisement that I unfortunately paid for with regards to buying other learning materials from the DeBono foundation.
    Great necessity for any industry
Provides easy practical tools for thinking. A must read for any person who needs new ideas.
Summary of previous work, annoyingly written.
Resonable summary of his previous work. If you are not familiar with his work then the book isn't bad. There are some phrases in the book which the author uses repeatatively, which grates after a while. Also De Bono continues to go on about his achievements which is also very annoying. Summary: good ideas, annoyingly written.
    Think - before you buy!
The guy is just a charlatan. He 'adopts' previous 'good ideas' but does not provide any convincing examples of ideas that were the result of his methods.
