I may be a little biased, but ....

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone! Teachers will love it because it will make them reflect back upon their own (probably disastrous) first year of teaching. For anyone else, if you'd like to get a small taste of what urban high school education is like, read this book.

I had the interesting experience of sharing my first year of teaching at Northeast High School with Mr. Danza, so in a way this book was very personal for me. Although I already had three years of experience under my belt, it was my first foray into urban education. Additionally, the following year, I had several of Mr. Danza's students in my own English class. So for me, this was like reading about home. I enjoyed the book so much more than I enjoyed the television series. It seemed more honest and definitely more real.

From the perspective of someone who wants to be a professor in a college of education at some point in the future, this book is crucial. Although Mr. Danza only had one class of students to worry about, his experiences -- his fears, his successes, his failures, his joys-- are all very real.

I also thought it was a masterful decision to have Tony read his own book.

Great personal account

This is a great personal account of a film that I loved when I was a kid and still love today. I love the fact that it is read by his son, although it is hard to believe he is an actor as his diction is sometimes unclear. For a man who is 95yo it feels like it just happened to him a decade ago and there are often personal reflections from his past and present that make this an enjoyable listen.

Top-notch listening experience

Would you consider the audio edition of I Am Spartacus! to be better than the print version?

I have not read the print version, but would imagine it is as entertaining as the audio version.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I was enthralled by many characters, like Charles Laughton, Laurence Olivier, Dalton Trumbo and Douglas himself.

What about Michael Douglass performance did you like?

I enjoyed being able to trust that Michael was giving us an authentic interpretation of his father's words, attitudes and manner.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I was brought close to tears on many occasions. How can you listen to a 95-year-old man reflect on his many decades and not be moved?

Any additional comments?

I listened to this on long drives, and was always amazed at how quickly those miles passed. I cannot recommend this book more highly.

McCarthyism and its Effects in Hollywood

Kirk Douglas gives us a fascinating memoir on the making of an epic movie during the shameful era of Hollywood blacklists. Spartacus had some of the biggest stars of the day Kirk, Lawrence Olivier, Charles Laughton, Peter Ustinov, Tony Curtis and Jeanne Simmons. Listening to the interplay among this outsized egos was fascinating.

But more importantly, the book reminds us of the damage the blacklists had on the careers of those who stood up for their rights in the face of the House on Unamerican Activities and Kirk Douglas's courage in helping to break the blacklist.

Disappointing

Shania's life has been hard for the most part and really good at times. The underlying theme here in her book is that she doesn't think people are responsible for their actions. I wish Shania much love on her journey. I do feel this book might be helpful to others are starting their journey to healing past wounds.

I appreciated her candidness without the quirky. I really got the sense that she was genuinely telling her entire story while emphasizing her feelings through all the hardships and triumphs. Amazing!

Where does From This Moment On rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

I would say as far as autobiographical books go, this one is very close to the top. I already loved Shania the singer, but to learn for about Eilleen, the fierce, brave and kind woman was really a treat. Her life story and her will to overcome the obstacles she faced are both truly inspirational.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

From This Moment On, of course! There is no better title.

My only disappointment with this book was that Shania didn't read the entire book. While Scott was a fine narrator, I really would have preferred to hear Shania tell her entire story, instead of just two small audio clips in the beginning and end.

This book was one of the best autobiographies I have ever read or listened to. Spoto is incredibly engaging and innovating in the telling of Taylor's story. The narrative is well researched and well written with an emphasis on a historical context of Taylor as well as her family, which I found very interesting. Thoroughly enjoyed the audiobook and look foward to listening to it again in the future.

Dull and repetitive

Not sure why but I found myself hitting fast forward a number of times through this audiobook. It just got a little tedious with the minute details of Taylor's diva life. I'm a fan of Elizabeth Taylor...but not this book.
