Popes Creek and Colonial Beach are not included because they are not in the aforementioned geographic area, but they are known to harbor great quantities of delicious crabs.

I recently read this book for free, borrowing it through my Kindle Unlimited account.

As a tour book, to get familiar with the area on Maryland's Chesapeake, this is a practical, useful guide. In fact, my one great regret is that I didn't read it BEFORE my early July vacation trip to Maryland. I would have so enjoyed seeing (and eating at) some of the eateries featured in this booklet.

Yet, that is not the great value with this outstanding book. What I loved most, and the reason I bought the Kindle version after reading the book for free, is the outstanding recipes included within. If you enjoy seafood, and consider yourself competent in the kitchen, you're going to need Cruising the Waterfront Restaurants of the Lower Potomac.

I know of no higher compliment for a Kindle book than, "Although I read it for free through KU, I bought the book for my library."

Real down home and informative. I liked it!

In depth book regarding the waterfront restaurants of the Lower Potomac serving up "home cooked food" (not a single one of them provid[ing] frozen food heated in a microwave). Plenty of pics were included that easily zoomed and added body to the book. At least half the book was devoted to authentic seafood recipes that was an added bonus. Had tongue-in-cheek humor as well such as this passage "The Mann's often have visitors who run aground at night after consuming too much beer while fishing and have to be retrieved by marine police." All I need is a good map to follow the river and some easy links to the recipes and I'd be set. Very good book!

It is also great for cooks who have access to all of the ingredients found in the recipes found throughout the book. I highly recommend that readers not be hungry while reading this book, because this hunger will only get worse.

Maybe. It's an easy listen and Phil's son Alan does a good job reading it. I like Phil's raw simplicity and non-overbearing intelligence. He doesn't hold back and I like that in a person. Honesty is always refreshing.

Ms. Kay for her perseverance, strength, faith, love, determination, and simple beauty.

A simple book with a message that isn't so simple

I think many of us who watch "Duck Dynasty" know that even though Phil doesn't usually have a whole lot to say, there is a lot going on with this man behind the scenes. This book confirms that. It's a really inspiring story and having completed it I feel like I have a positive role model to follow after. Great book!

What about the narratorss performance did you like?

This narrator has an amazing understated deadpan humor. There are various other voices that come in to read quotes by people other than Bacharach - and those are fine - but the voice of Bacharach himself (about 95% of the book is in the 1st person) is extraordinarily good.

The time period covered (40s, 50s, 60s) and types of music (early rock & r&b to the Beatles era) are of course very dated, but Bacharach's best work was of timeless genius in terms of pure melodic and harmonic inspiration and originality. I mean - listen to Walk on By - it's pure, unadulterated genius. The lesser stuff like Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head sounds corny after 5 decades, but there are at least 20 Bacharach songs that will always sound like masterpieces - Beatles-level classics. Bacharach was the bridge from the great Tin Pan Alley composers like Kern, Gershwin, Rodgers, Porter and Arlen, and the post-Beatles composers. I don't think Motown and Beatles could have been what they were without Bacharach to show the way. The 32-bar standard had been exhausted. Rock & Roll was fresh and vital but harmonically limited.

Light on gossip, rich on context

I took a long time listening to this because I didn't want it to end. I also wanted to listen to the music chronologically as Jonathan Gould worked his way through each album and single; so I kept taking breaks from the audiobook to catch up on the songs.

The Beatles are THE band for me and always have been, since my brother and I took the bus into Richmond in 1964 to see the first run of "Hard Day's Night." I won't go so far as to say this is THE book about the group, but it's a fine one, and is well narrated by Richard Aspel. To the standard question, would you read / listen to another book by this writer / narrator - yes, definitely, on both counts.

It's not the most gossipy book about the Beatles. Gould doesn't have any ground-breaking new research or exclusive interviews to offer. What he has, in abundance, are two things: a rich sense of the political and cultural context in which the Beatles' career took place; and a detailed analysis, musical and lyrical, of every released single and every track on every album. His discussions of the songs are what impelled me to go back and listen to them yet again, this time with a handful of specific things to listen for in each one. (I didn't always understand the terminology Gould uses: at one point, he refers to "the elemental subdominant cadent in A-major" - at least I think that's what he said - but his descriptions are more often concrete and illuminating than over-my-head baffling.)

Gould sets the Beatles firmly against the backdrop of Elvis, Les Paul, Brian Wilson, the Stones, Dylan, and the Goon Show on the one hand; and Vietnam, assassinations, student rebellions, the Prague Spring, the Chicago riots, the Profumo affair, and the political rivalry of Edward Heath and Harold Wilson on the other. If you didn't live through those times, the book will give you a better sense of the wider world than any other Beatles book I know. If you did live through those times, it will remind you of how glorious (and sometimes gloriously awful) they were.

Chazz Palminteri should stick to movies.

What didnt you like about Chazz Palminteris performance?

Chazz Palminteri delivers an uneven and stilted reading. He frequently mispronounces words, and then switches back and forth between alternate pronunciations in an apparent attempt to resolve his confusion, at our expense. He is constantly placing the the emphasis on the wrong word as though he is incapable of reading a few words ahead in order to grasp the gist of the narrative. The effect is a very stilted and distracting performance. I also thought he laid it on a little too think with the Brooklyn accent. I've heard Tommy Mattola give interviews, and his way of speaking and demeanor does not square with Palminteri's affect here.The insider tidbits are interesting, but Palminteri's performance detracted from what would otherwise have been an enjoyable listen.
