    Title: Yes Man
    Author: Danny Wallace
    Narrator: Danny Wallace
    Format: Abridged
Length: 5 hrs and 3 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-04-08
    Publisher: Random House AudioBooks
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 10 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Danny Wallace had been staying in. Far too much. Having been dumped by his girlfriend, he really wasn't doing the young, free and single thing very well. Instead he was avoiding people. Texting them instead of calling them. Calling them instead of meeting them. That is until one fateful date when a mystery man on a late-night bus told him to 'say yes more'. These three simple words changed Danny's life forever. Yes Man is the story of what happened when Danny decided to say YES to everything, in order to make his life more interesting. And boy, did it get more interesting.
This is the tie-in audiobook that goes with the 2008 film of the Danny Wallace book - Yes Man - starring Jim Carrey and Zooey Deschanel, which is being released by Warner Bros in December 2008.

    Short, funny book.
Great listen. Very funny and interesting story. Good to have the author read the book, its also read very well.
    I highly recommend.
    More Maybe than Yes
Firstly, I want to say that this book is at times quite witty and well read. However, I do not agree with other reviewers that it was a 'life changing' experience or anything close. The whole book can be summed up in the mantra that the book itself states so frequently - 'say yes more'. If that advice is life changing than I must be missing something.
I did enjoy parts of the book, but other parts were slow, repetitive and fairly predictable. The fact that this is supposedly a true story gave it some interest, but ultimately I found it quite a laboured journey and one that was fairly un-satisfying in the finish. I suppose if it actually was a true story than that is why nothing more incredible happened. I was expecting something more akin to 'The Dice Man' by Luke Rhinehart (an excellent read by the way).
Anyway, to sum up - it is an OK book. (It passed the time on a long drive to Scotland in my case.) However, I would not really recommend it. Sorry Danny, but it?s a Maybe from me rather than a Yes.
    Life Changing audio book
I bought this audio book in preperation for watching the movie with my wife.
I listened to the book over a few days when I was working away from home, staying in hotels...
It is amazing, there are so many things in the book that everyone will relate to.
I was so so so excited when i went to see the movie with my wife after hearing this great book.
The movie is good, but it is incomparible to the genius that is this book.
I recomend everyone gets this book. It is 10000% better than the movie!
    Buy the book instead
What did you like best about this story?
manages to be both funny and inspiring
Have you listened to any of uncrediteds other performances? How does this one compare?
    Good performance by Danny Wallace
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The whole thing inspired me to say yes to a few opportunities I would normally turn down.
    Any additional comments?
Unfortunately the abridged audio book cuts out loads. I bought this as I had enjoyed the original book a while ago and wanted to hear the story again without taking time to read the whole thing. There is so much good content cut though. Some of the stuff that is cut is so essential to the main plot too. They even changed a big part of the ending.

  • In Search of Tiger Audiobook by Tom Callahan

    Title: In Search of Tiger
    Author: Tom Callahan
    Narrator: Buck Schirner
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 45 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-21-08
    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 2 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Tiger is 20 years old when the book opens and 27 when it closes. During those years, Callahan covered Woods at all the Majors, including the Masters, the U.S. Open, and the British Open, culminating in Tiger's heart-stopping race to make history by clinching the string of Majors affectionately nicknamed the Tiger Slam.
Along the way, Tom Callahan hears from everyone who is anyone in the world of Tiger Woods, including Phil Mickelson, Jack Nicklaus, David Duval, Butch Harmon, Ernie Els, and, of course, Tiger's rather ubiquitous mother and father. As much as we learn about Tiger - how he sees himself in relation to the courses he plays on and the players he has learned from and competed with - we also enjoy a bird's-eye view of golf as it is now with Tiger on the scene, and as it was for centuries before.
    Members Reviews:
Not quite what I hoped, but...
Callahan's book can, at first, be considered a misnomer. The search for Tiger Woods is not conducted in this book-rather, we find that Callahan attempts to search for a sense of humanity within one of the most underrated, and often misunderstood sports: golf. Callahan takes us on a "tour" (forgive the unavoidable pun), through the often overlooked sport, though the eyes and stories of some of golf's most visible and legendary players. From comparing stories of Jack Nicklaus's and Phil Mickelson's introductions into golf, Callahan attempts to provide the reader with the sense that golf, much like football and basketball, has a vivid cast of characters. Callahan goes on to prove this, by exposing the reader to many great stories about those said characters.
What ties all of this to Tiger Woods, is that Woods appears in this book as the looming figure, casting a shadow over golf (in a good way), and all of these golfers can only accept the fact that they all, currently, are underneath this shadow, and don't seem to have figured out a way to get out from under it. In essence, golf is Tiger's world: all of these great players are just living in it.
For anybody who wishes to gain a better understanding of some of the noticeable figures in modern golf, this book's nothing short of an asset. For me, at the very least, Callahan provided a great collection of stories that gave a sense of humanity and depth to a sport that is far too often mistaken as a mere hobby.
    Not quite
This book is a compelling read for someone with a starting knowledge of and interest in Tiger Woods, but it doesn't quite make you feel like you've found Tiger. The book seems to be too choppy, more a series of isolated chapters thrown in that dont seem to connect. And there are too many questions that you are left with after reading it. If you're going to brag that you covered Tiger at all his first 8 majors, why have chapters only on the 3 in 2000? And if you're going to focus on those, why soak them with background info and then glaze over the tremendous performances? Callahan's description of Tiger during the 2000 PGA is particularly weak; why he decides to condense that great final round with May and the great back nine and the putts on 18 and 16 the second time around into about a page and a half befuddled me.

    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 11 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Courtney Ryley Cooper's classic biography traces Oakley's extraordinary journey and separates the facts from the many legends that have sprung up in its wake. We learn of her enduring marriage to Frank Butler and their first meeting, a shooting match in which the seemingly delicate young girl defeated the professional marksman; her association with Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show and its triumphal tour through Europe and America; the train crash that nearly took her life; and her years as an actress and teacher. Her story remains to this day one of the grandest to have come out of the Old West.
    Editorial Reviews:
Widely considered to be the greatest markswoman who ever lived and who could shoot off the end of a cigarette dangling from her husbands lips, the biography Annie Oakley: Woman at Arms is a fascinating account of a remarkable woman who experienced enough adventure in her 66 years to fill up a dozen lives.
Narrated in the wonderfully gravelly tone of an aging cowboy by Jonathan Reese, Annie Oakley: Woman at Arms richly details the unlikely rise of the five-foot-tall woman from nowhere Ohio, who went from poverty and great personal hardship, to become the best-known woman in the world as the star and sharpest-shooting member of Buffalo Bills Wild West famous travelling show.

    Annie Oakley- Audio Book
I'd been trying to listen to this exact story as it was recently being played out on Sirius XM's Book Radio. I liked what I was able to hear but kept missing some of the days so I decided to just buy it. Glad I did, very good biography of Annie Oakley. The version I bought has the whole book on one MP3 CD so it's only 1 disk, but it also had the E-book version included on the disk and that can be viewed as a PDF. For the Amazon price it was a worthwhile addition to my audio book collection.
    UPDATE- 6/4/09
I forgot to mention in my review that it was NOT as easy as stated on their site to transfer the Audio book from the single MP3-CD to the desktop computer's library for install on my MP3 player. It plays no problem on the computer strait from the CD, but it took a lot of tries to get it on a hard drive. Finally was successful on my 2nd try on my laptop. It would show up but not be able to be saved or synced. Could/should be as easy as ripping a regular CD, which it is not!
    Fabulous book!
I have always wanted to read about Annie Oakley and this is a fabulous book of her life! I will be featuring her in a biography bookclub I lead in July. Thank you for such a wonderful price on this book!
    book review of anney oakley
The book had interesting info that expanded my understanding of her life. I found the great photos to be a nice addition to a fascinating biography.
    Interesting
This was, I think, written in 1927 a year after Annie Oakley's death. It was released again a short time ago. I enjoyed the content and the writing style. The author was a friend and co-worker in show business. From all I have been able to find out Annie Oakley was a lady in the very best sense of the word...a capable woman worthy of your admiration. The book is worth a read.

    Title: American Prince
    Subtitle: A Memoir
    Author: Peter Golenbock, Tony Curtis
    Narrator: Don Leslie
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 32 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-14-08
    Publisher: Books on Tape
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 22 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Now, in his captivating, no-holds-barred autobiography, Tony Curtis shares the agony and ecstasy of a private life in the public eye. No simple tell-all, American Prince chronicles Hollywood during its heyday. Curtis revisits his immense body of work - including the unforgettable classics Houdini, Spartacus, and Some Like It Hot - and regales readers with stories of his associations with Frank Sinatra, Laurence Olivier, director Billy Wilder, and film industry heavyweight Lew Wasserman, as well as paramours Natalie Wood and Marilyn Monroe, among others.
As forthright as he is enthralling, Tony Curtis offers intimate glimpses into his succession of failed marriages (and the one that has endured), his destructive drug addiction, and his passion as a painter. Written with humor and grace, American Prince is a testament to the power of living the life of one's dreams.
    Critic Reviews:
"When you're with Tony Curtis, you're with somebody very alive. He was - and is - one of the most 'up' people I have ever known." (Sidney Poitier)
"Tony Curtis could have just been the beautiful young leading man, handsome, charming as hell...[but] he wanted to be a good actor, and he's the only guy I know who learned his craft successfully." (Jack Lemmon)
"For Some Like It Hot, I wanted a straight leading man and a comedian. I was sure Tony was right for it. Tony is so open and animated....It was a huge, wonderful plus for the picture." (Billy Wilder)
    Members Reviews:
    Interesting and colorful
Tony Curtis has lived a colorful life, and you'll get to hear about his career and his life at length. It's an interesting listen, not only for the famous people that crowd its pages but for the Hollywood that it depicts.
Since the focus is always on Curtis (and why not?), you won't necessarily get a good sense of chronology. All of a sudden he has two daughters with Janet Leigh, for example, but he never mentions their birth. What comes through most clearly is his charm and ambition, and he is disarmingly direct and unapologetic about all the women in his life. (Let's just say that you won't be able to count or keep track of them.)
This isn't a "change and grow" memoir, where the author hits you over the head with Insights throughout. As he presents himself, Curtis stays remarkably the same throughout his life. He always wanted to be an actor and a movie star, and he never wanted to produce or direct. Because he spent so many years acting, it would be nice to hear more about certain of his movies: HOUDINI is brushed off in a line or two, for example, and THE BOSTON STRANGLER is barely mentioned. Still, this is a good, entertaining book to listen to.
    I enjoyed this book!
Although I am not a big fan of Tony Curtis I did enjoy his book. I love the history of the old Hollywood and because I recognized every person he wrote about I really enjoyed that aspect of the book. Curtis certainly loves himself as this book shows but you can't help liking him in spite of himself. I thought the reader was excellent. You really felt it was Curtis himself who was doing the reading.
    Interesting
It was fun to hear the stories about some of the movie stars I recall as a kid and the reader had a voice similar to Tony Curtis' own.
    I felt sad for Mr.

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 14 hrs and 26 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-15-08
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 6 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Covering more than 30 years of Reagan's film and television work, Eliot sheds new light on Reagan's bachelor life, his two marriages, and his two runs as the president of SAG. It also examines his personal relationship with superagent Lew Wasserman, the crucial player who helped develop Reagan's movie-star persona, which would prove essential to his eventually becoming President of the United States.
    Editorial Reviews:
Long before becoming the 40th president of the United States, Ronald Reagan was a Hollywood actor who appeared in over 50 films. Mark Eliot tells the story of these early years in the spotlight.
In Reagan: The Hollywood Years, Eliot covers the high and low points of his film career, including his famous turn in Knute Rockne All American, where his signature line "Win one for the Gipper!" - was later used for political advantage. He also touches upon Reagans rocky first marriage to Jane Wyman and his time as the head of the Screen Actors Guild.
Voicing his own words, Eliot delivers an expressive and nuanced performance of his biography.
    Members Reviews:
Very good, but more politics than movies
As the description indicates, this is about Reagan's Hollywood years. The real focus of the book is Reagan's early political training: his time on various political action committees during the blacklist era, his presidency of SAG, and his professional relationships with the powerful of Hollywood. The most powerful figure is Lew Wasserman, whom Eliot argues is the basis for the Godfather figure in Mario Puzo's novel, with Reagan as Johnny Fontane, sent into Las Vegas to give the place an air of respectability.
Although it is exhaustive, and occasionally exhausting, on the subject of political committees (you'll hear the name of every member of some committees), Eliot seems less interested in Reagan's movies, although he dutifully covers them. Except for the standout Kings' Row, he doesn't seem to think much of Reagan as an actor, although Reagan was better in some of these movies than Eliot lets on. Elliot does make a good case, however, that Reagan's upright and honest movie persona, honed in a series of B pictures at Warner Brothers, both reflected his personality and helped to shape the politician he later became. He also devotes time to the theme of Reagan's trying to find father figures to mentor him and to provide a model of success that he could emulate.
    All Writers Aren't Readers
This should be a more interesting book to listen to. It is an account of a part of Ronald Reagan's life that little is known about, and includes Hollywood, the studio system, movies and beautiful co-stars.
Instead, the listener is terribly distracted by the performance. Mr. Eliot reads this book like he is absolutely unfamiliar with the material. There are long gaps when he seems to have lost his page, and every third sentence contains the words "author's note". If a professional reader had been engaged, the story could have been more interesting and my mind wouldn't have drifted every time the reader got too close to the microphone.
    50/50
I stopped reading the Cary Grant book when it was released... tantamount to walking out of a film in progress. Did not care for this author's writing style. Laborious descriptions and excessive sentence grafting...

    Publisher's Summary:
Every football fan has an opinion on Rio Ferdinand. He is one of the most gifted footballers this country has ever produced, twice breaking the British transfer record, but he courts controversy in equal measure. Most famously he was dropped by England for missing a drugs test, his subsequent eight-month ban making front-page news.
But then there is the glorious football. He captained Leeds in a Champions League semi-final, won the Premiership and Carling Cup with Manchester United and was England's outstanding player in the 2002 and 2006 World Cups.
We've all read the front and back page stories. Now, for the first time, Rio tells it as it is, from the heart, no holds barred.
This is his explosive story of the good, the bad, and the beautiful game.
    Critic Reviews:
"A very good read. The portrait he paints of life on the cusp of stardom is brilliant." (Sunday Times)
    Members Reviews:
I really enjoyed this heartfelt honest account from Rio
I really enjoyed this heartfelt honest account from Rio. I don't even follow football but I agree with him that it's the desire in us to want to know what makes people successful, that's why I read it and would recommend it to any sports or biography hunter
    Terrific
This is a great read. Very interesting insight to Rio's childhood and his time at the so called "smaller clubs" before his big money move to United. I would recommend this.
A Hilarous and easy to read autobiography
If you haven't ever read a soccer autobiography, this is a great place to start. A fast entertaining read filled with great english slang, and to the point style. You can tell that Rio was having fun telling these stories and isn't afraid to use a few swear words to get his point across. This isn't just a glossy childrens style soccer biography, its definately fun to read for adults also. I thoroghly reccomend this book. C'MON UNITED.

Not bad - but not what I'd hoped
I'm a fan of American Chopper - I ride motorcycles, I'm passionate about motorcycles. This book provides many insights into the background of the Teutul family. I'm sure that anyone knows that what you see on a TV show is highly edited, scenes are selected out of many shot, orders of things altered, commentary from the people involved recorded later. As a result, the people you see on TV are not exactly what you think they would be. I doubt that Mikey is as incompetent as you might think - I doubt that Junior is as late as often as you might think and I doubt that Senior raves about nothing for hours on end for no reason. I do know that they are a family and that family dynamics are complex.
If you're a fan of the show - this book deserves your attention, it completes some of the puzzle behind the scenes.
A couple of things that could be improved - some of the words don't appear to be in character with the person who supposedly wrote them.
Second, having a book about the people in question read by someone else, strikes me as odd. I do know that the Teutuls are busy people - but I would think they might have found some time to read the book about their lives. Just a thought.

    Another Brick in the Wall
Nick Mason does a fine job as reader and gives a good general overview of the band's history from the early Syd days up to the Live 8 reunion.
However, there's little new insight into the band members, their relationships, and, particularly, how the music was written and recorded.
In fairness, the book is abridged and maybe that's why it seems a bit unrevealing. Plus Mason is a drummer and had less to do with song construction than the other three.
I don't see the logic is abridging a book like this. The only buyers are going to be Pink Floyd fans. And fans like this are going to want as much material as possible. With digital downloads, there's no logic in abridging a book like this; not like five years ago when it would have been sold on cassette.
Worth a listen if you're a Floyd fan. Though I would look forward to the day when/if Roger Waters wrote a comprehensive autobiography.
    Reminiscing with love and hope
So awesome to hear it read by the author and drummer of the amazing Pink Floyd!
    Not to buy
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
This version does not correspond to the book version, very disappointing.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Inside Out?
The making of the dark side.
Would you be willing to try another one of Nick Masons performances?
    Yes
    Strangely Fascinating
As a somewhat Pink Floyd fan, I've always found the story behind the band to be strangely fascinating, and Nick's account goes right from the early days of the band finding it's feet, and finding it's sound, right up to the most recent events. While much of this material has already been documented previously, it's great to have the stories personally recounted from the inside as it were, with some quite honest and humble moments.
The downside - well, it's abridged of course, but it's been done well and doesn't feel like anything important to the overall story was left out. Recommended.
    Excellent delivery
Beautifully read, but there was still parts of their history I would have liked to have heard about

    Wonderful amusing stories
What did you like most about An Evening with Johnners?
This was an absolute treat to hear a superb raconteur at the height of his skills holding a room spellbound with his stories, tales of a life well lived, full of humour, and richly recounted.
What did you like best about this story?
The sheer breadth of his experiences and tales were amazing, being younger I knew him mostly for his work on Test March Special, but the other tales he told were so funny and so well told. This recording will get plenty of plays with me whenever I want to smile.
Have you listened to any of Brian Johnstons other performances? How does this one compare?
    No
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Botham failing to get his leg over the wicket and the immortal "Stop it Aggers!" he manages to choke out before succumbing to the giggles again. Wonderful stuff!

    Publisher's Summary:
After the publication of Tim Russert's #1 New York Times best seller about his father, Big Russ & Me, he received an avalanche of letters from daughters and sons who wanted to tell him about their own fathers, most of whom were not superdads or heroes but ordinary men who were remembered and cherished for some of their best moments, of advice, tenderness, strength, honor, discipline, and occasional eccentricity.
Most of these daughters and sons were eager to express the gratitude they had carried with them through the years. Others wanted to share lessons and memories and, most important, pass them down to their own children.
This book is for all fathers, young or old, who can learn from the men in these pages how to get it right, and to understand that sometimes it is the little gestures that can make the big difference for your child. For some in this book, the appreciation came later than they would have liked. But as Wisdom of Our Fathers reminds us, it is never too late to embrace it.
From the father who coached his daughter in sports (and life), attending every meet, game, performance, and tournament, to the daughter who, after a 15-year estrangement, learned to make peace with her difficult father just before he died, to the son who came, at last, to appreciate the silent way his father could show affection, Wisdom of Our Fathers shares rewarding lessons, immeasurable gifts, and lasting values.

A must read for anyone who has a father.
The stories made me laugh and cry, sometimes at the same time. The stories made me think of my dad.
A gift for and to yourself and to other strong males in your life.
This book means a lot to me. I bought it before Mr. Russert died. We are also from Boston and attended BC. It is so well written and heartwarming. An easy read that makes you wink at the book as you pass it by on the bookshelf. Love to buy it as a gift for my significant male figures in my life.
RICK SHAQ GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "MY DAD DIED 27 YEARS AGO, AND THERE ISN'T A DAY THAT GOES BY THAT I DON'T THINK OF HIM!"
First of all, reviewers should not grade this book with stars, they should review it, based on how many boxes of tissues, they used, while reading it. Using my recommended rating system, I rate this book "FIVE BOXES OF TISSUES"! My Dad proved to me, that you can be a Father, and a best friend, and because of him, I always wanted to be a Father. By the time my Dad was 60 years old, he had complete Kidney failure, and was on dialysis 4 hours a day, 3 days a week, and he never missed a day of work. My Dad then had heart problems, and they had to remove his aortic valve, and since he had no kidneys, they couldn't use a pig's valve, because of fear of infection. I signed a release form for him, authorizing him, to be one of the first people, to use the "Saint Jude's" valve. He went "code blue" during the surgery, and was in intensive care. One of the nurse's told me, that my Dad said he couldn't give up, because he couldn't let his son's down. He made it through that, and in a few months went back to work.
