the Babe in all his humanity and presence
I found this book to to be refreshing and thoughtfully written. I like the premise that the author Leigh Montville uses to let us have a glimps into the life that was Babe Ruth.
The life of Babe Ruth has always been one of great memories for me as I had the stories told to me by my father about Babe and the New York Yankees. To this day the goose bumps arise when I recall the hundreds of different stories I was told by my father about the Babe !!
This book re-woke many of those memories of my childhood, my father, and of course the Babe!!
This is a terrific read and I must highly recommend this book for your enjoyment. There will never be another Babe !!
Baseball then and now - NO comparison!!
    Big Bam review
What made the experience of listening to The Big Bam the most enjoyable?
This was a very interesting book. I enjoyed the Narrater Adam Grupper his voice was smooth and easy to listen to!
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Big Bam?
The book covered many things that I did not know about the Babe and for that reason it was work listening to.
Have you listened to any of Adam Gruppers other performances before? How does this one compare?
This was my first time listening to Grupper, and I found him one of the best I have heard so far!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes I found myself not wanting to stop
    Any additional comments?
All in all a great listen, but I wish it would have covered more. It seemed to me that it rushed through his early years to fast. Short read.
    A Sad Legend
Amazing book filled with insights and many details I did not know about the Babe. Listened to it with my 9yr old son who is big baseball fan. It lays out life of Babe Ruth and the course he took. Many ups and more downs then are known. In the end the legend was better then the life he lived. Important read to understand who myth and truth make up the life of celebrity.
    terrific book, great narrator
Not only was this book chock full of facts as well as "fog," but the narrator really brought it to life. The author does a good job of bridging the "holes" in the story. When you are listening to the Babe's performance in a game, the narrator makes you feel as if you are there. My only regret is that I listened to the abridged before noticing that Audible also has the unabridged version.

    Critic Reviews:
"Clinton's legendary charisma shines through in his reading, making this audiobook a rare treat." (Publishers Weekly)
"Bill Clinton's reading of My Life is the perfect way to experience the former president's voluminous memoir....Always a compelling, articulate speaker, Clinton is in his element." (AudioFile)
    Members Reviews:
Easier to listen to than to read
Its a good book and Clinton reading it in own person makes it more real and interesting to listen to. I would have liked Clinton to go further into detail on some issues like the peace-talking in Middle East and the Monica Lewinsky matter. You can feel his frustration at the end of his presidency when the Democrats lost to the Republicans in the presidential election and the votes in Florida were ruled out of favor to the Democrats.
Overall a good book to listen to, an easier listen than a read.
His life in his own voice
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I listen to my audio books on my commute to and from work. This is one of the few books that i finished in back to back listens.
    Any additional comments?
The book is all the more listenable as it is read by Clinton himself. The first part of his book is about his childhood and also the relationships within his own family, grandparents, mother, step father. While he claims he had a wonderful childhood, he doesnt hesitate to discuss the troubled parts either. I am from India and it is not common for our contemporary leaders to talk about as openly about the unvarnished parts of their personal lives.
Some topics tend to dominate the reading
-his not taking part in the vietnam war - and long justification and rationalisation of this
-his multiple legal tangles - whitewater, paula jones, ken starr etc
-the "uncooperative" republican party and especially newt gingrich
There is less said about the economy and his views regarding America's economic future (Clintons presidency saw multiple years with surplus budgets ), China , or radical fundamentalism.
I am unsure of the value of this book to an American, i found it a worthwhile listen for someone outside but interested.
    Why no Unabridged version?
I was disappointed not to find an unabridged version. I still purchased the abridged version but am still disappointed.

Nurturing a serious drinking problem from the age of 14, Frank eventually turned to Catholicism in 1987 and hasn't had a drink since. He performed his first stand-up gig in December 1987. His first television appearance in 1988 met with fits of laughter from the audience and 131 complaints, including one from cabinet minister Edwina Currie. He met fellow comedian David Baddiel in 1990, and the two went on to share a flat throughout the early 90's and to create the hit TV series Fantasy Football League. Winner of the prestigious Perrier Award at the Edinburgh Festival, Skinner's is a unique mixture of laddish and philosophical humour which has won him the prime time ITV show The Frank Skinner Show. Here, for the first time, Frank candidly tells us of the highs and lows of his fascinating life and career.

"It's his poignant portrait of his working-class youth that makes it a classic of its kind." (Guardian)
    Members Reviews:
    simply awesome
funny, touching, honest -- everything you want from a memoir, and then some.
    Just so funny !!!!
This book of Frank Skinners life is just so funny and interesting.
    Abridged, what a waste.
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
    By having it UNABRIDGED.
What was most disappointing about Frank Skinners story?
It was like an incoherent highlights package, kind of like watching a movie that cut 80% out randomly.
    Any additional comments?
I know this is a great book having read the hardback on release.
I recently read Kevin Bridges book which subliminally makes you want to read or retread Frank skinners book.
I genuinally never noticed it was an abridged version of just over 2 hours. This DOES NOT work for an autobiography.
I can understand abridged for artistic reasons but it really spoils what is a superb book. My rating reflects the fact that a short version like this is near worthless.
    not like the book
I've read frank's book around 4 times and I love it. Frank skinner is awesome and so funny. However the Audible book is massivelg dissapointing. Massive chunks of the book missing and the best bits too. It's a shame.
    A Life Like Frank's
I'd agree with the review from The Guardian - it's the early years, before he became famous, that are of the most interest here. His heavy drinking in seventies Birmingham are portrayed honestly and unflinchingly, with the feeling coming through that for all its seeming drudgery, he was happiest then. Once he becomes famous I became less interested and felt that the 'Three Lions' story went on a bit. They didn't win, Frank, get over it. I look forward to the next installment because, from what is written here, Skinner still has a lot to say about fame and coming to terms with it, and maybe he'll do this once his star begins to diminish a bit.

    Narrator: Sheila Hancock
    Format: Abridged
Length: 5 hrs and 17 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-10-05
    Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing Plc
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 28 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
John Thaw was born in Manchester, the son of a lorry driver. When he arrived at RADA on a scholarship he felt an outsider. In fact his timing was perfect: it was the sixties and television was beginning to make its mark. With his roles in Z-Cars and The Sweeney, fame came quickly. But it was John's role as Morse that made him an icon. In 1974 he married Sheila Hancock, with whom he shared a working-class background and a RADA education. Sheila was already the star of the TV series The Rag Trade and went on to become the first woman artistic director at the RSC.
Theirs was a sometimes turbulent, always passionate relationship, and in this remarkable book Sheila describes their love, weathering overwork and the pressures of celebrity, drink, and cancer, with honesty and piercing intelligence, and evokes two lives lived to the utmost.
    Critic Reviews:
"Constructed with considerable skill....A book of exceptional emotional candour." (Sunday Telegraph)
"An impressive and affecting work of art." (Spectator)
    Members Reviews:
    sad and enthralling
sheila hancock is quite brilliant in the way she switches between past and present and tells the story of her life, johns life, life together and apart, and then his death. Very moving.
    John Thaw
Would you consider the audio edition of The Two of Us to be better than the print version?
I have not read the hardcover book. I knew John Thaw primarily through movies and television. This is the reason I chose the audio version. He seems more alive on this format.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Two of Us?
I found the moment he found out he had esophageal cancer and the life he chose to live afterwards both brave and heart breaking. I still have his Morse episodes on CD. That is the beauty of this medium. He lives forever.
What about Sheila Hancocks performance did you like?
Sheila Hancock's performance spot on. I can not envision anyone else recording this. The emotion she conveys truly moved me. I listened to the audio book twice. Wonderful
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
John Thaw's dignity through his illness and his relationships were inspiring.
    Any additional comments?
I just loved getting to know John Thaw the man, it gives me more insight into his characters.
Interesting and enjoyable to learn more an icon
Excellent book and interesting to learn about such a famous icon and his life. Sheila has let us in to their life and experiences both good and bad. A loss for people that admired John this book has enabled the reader to learn more about John and add to the memories of his life.
    Rewarding & Poignant
A refreshing and moving love story. Simply lovely tale of two individuals who are bound together by destiny. Written by a lady who must have loved this man with passion, but who still held firmly onto her own personality. Inspirational insight into the life of John Thaw & Shelia Hancock while maintaining privacy.
My first audio book which will lead me to discover many more I am sure.
    A Wonderful Story
This moving and honest account of two remarkable lives was gripping from beginning to end. A real love story that was delightful to listen to.

    Release date: 04-18-12

    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
With Redeeming Features, set mainly in New York, London, Arizona, and various parts of Europe, British designer Nicholas Haslam has written, with great charm and passion, a completely engaging memoir about pretty much everyone you have ever heard of anywhere in the 20th and 21st centuries. Like a "WASP Zelig", from the 1950s until 2008, the frenetically social and ebullient Haslam has managed, according to Vanity Fair, to "pop up from decade to decade alongside some of the most fascinating people in our cultural history."
Now a successful designer with clients from Moscow to Marrakesh, in the 1950s, fresh out of art school, he started learning at the knees of such aristocratic bohemians as Lady Diana Cooper and photographer, designer, and diarist Cecil Beaton. Of course he also came across Chips Channon, actress Tilly Losch, designer Oliver Messel, and photographer Anthony Armstrong-Jones, Lucian Freud and David Hockney. Haslam is a brilliant mimic with a great eye, so aside from revealing people's speech eccentricities, he gives you a perfect description of a room where a given social gathering is taking place.
In the 60s he was working at various English newspapers and British Vogue before going to New York with British photographer David Bailey (Antonioni's Blow-Up was about Bailey) and model Jean Shrimpton. There he worked for the art director at American Vogue in the days of Diana Vreeland, and Haslam gives a lively rundown on that office and its editors. In non-working hours he was hanging out with Djuna Barnes and Cole Porter, Tallulah Bankhead, Joan Crawford and Jane Russell, with Dorothy Parker, ballet star Edward Villella, and John Richardson.
By 1963 Haslam was art director of Huntington Hartford's magazine Show, spent time at the Factory, and starred in the Warhol film, Kiss, with Baby Jane Holzer. He was beginning to decorate and continued when, in 1966, he bought a ranch near Phoenix to breed and show Arabian horses. For four years he commuted to Los Angeles, working as a photographer for such film producers as Dominick Dunne and decorating for Natalie Wood, among others.
Once back in England in 1972, he wrote a column for David Bailey's Ritz, and NH Design took off, with such clients as Rod Stewart, Rupert Everett, Bryan Ferry, and Ringo Starr. He also designed restaurants, nightclubs, and stores, as well as parties for the Prince of Wales and various Rothschilds.
Redeeming Features is a unique picture of the cultural scene of the second half of the 20th century. Haslam is a gifted storyteller whose wit and enthusiasm make this a compelling read.

    What a terrible book
I was completely astonished by how horrid this book was. The performance is great... but that's it. This book has absolutely ZERO redeeming features, and it isn't even clear what the author is trying to redeem himself from. Maybe he had a bad hair day one day long ago.
It's just a list of name dropping in fabulous places.

    Great info on Ronda Rousey
I am pretty impressed with Ronda Rousey after having seen her on Ellen and briefly on TMZ. As I know little to nothing about her, this biography has given me a fantastic overview of her life and accomplishments. Granted, if you are already a rabid fan and have been following her career, there may be nothing new here. Not the case for me. This bio gives great info on Rousey's upbringing, her start in athletics, and her career in the UFC from the start until present day. I learned so much about this amazing woman from this book and found it to be a very worthwhile read on Rousey.
    Ronda Rousey story

    Engaging
Excellent piece of writing by Bill Redban. The book captures all of Ronda Rousey's key moments in her life thus far. My favorite part was her fighter profile. There were many details in book that I did not know about. The author has a clean writing style that keeps the reader engaged the entire way through the book. Highly recommend to anyone out there that does not know Ronda Rousey or anyone that wants the inside scoop on her life.

    Publisher's Summary:
Fred MacMurray was one of the most durable stars in motion picture history. Fred arrived in Hollywood in 1934 and within a year he was one of the top leading men in the movie industry. He was the leading actor or one of the leads in films through 1973 when Walt Disney Studios released his final starring role in a motion picture, Charley and the Angel. Thirty-nine years - five separate decades. Few stars have equaled that distinction. Of course every star career has its peaks and valleys. The initial peak of Fred's stardom was from his days as a Paramount leading man, beginning in 1935 and running roughly until the end of the Second World War. Like many aging stars, the post-war years were a mixed bag for Fred. Public tastes were changing and the kind of frothy, romantic comedies which had been his forte were going out of fashion. But he persevered and continued to do leading roles in a variety of pictures and from time to time found a film which registered strongly with film audiences and critics alike, such as The Egg and I (1947), and especially The Caine Mutiny (1954). By the mid 1950s Fred was appearing, increasingly, in that favorite genre of the aging leading man - the western film. Eight of ten films he made between 1955 and 1960 were westerns, not Fred's favorite genre. But they did keep his name before the public. Then in 1959, Fred began the second peak of his career thanks to Walt Disney, who cast Fred in his studios first live action comedy film, The Shaggy Dog. Incredibly this film which was made for under $1 million became the third biggest box office hit of that year, and Fred found a new audience. Over the next several years, Fred starred in a series of hugely popular family films for the Walt Disney Studios. Then in 1960, Fred did something that solidified his new family friendly image. He accepted the lead in a new television series called My Three Sons.
    Members Reviews:
    WONDERFUL STORY! BAD NARRATOR!
What made the experience of listening to Fred MacMurray the most enjoyable?
Having grown up watching MY THREE SONS (1959-1972), I found the story of Fred MacMurray quite enlightening. It was endearing to find out that the man I enjoyed as a homey father figure was also a down home person. McMurray was never one to let fame to go to his head. I also admired the fact that he stood by his first wife all the way to her deathbed (not many people do that any more
What other book might you compare Fred MacMurray to and why?
Another wonderful comparison would be the book MY LUCKY LIFE IN AND OUT OF SHOW BUSINESS (Dick Van Dyke, 2012). Though the Van Dyke book is an autobiography, it paints both people in real colors (not studio-created images).
What didnt you like about Patrick Rosss performance?
Patrick Ross reads the book in monotone, almost sounding like a computer voice. Had he put emotions (at least some), it would have been much more interesting.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It's a very charming book, but, at ten hours, a little too long for one sitting.
    Any additional comments?
If you are a baby boomer, this is a MUST READ!

    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
The story of NASCAR's legendary racer - newly revised! Dale Earnhardt Jr.s name virtually assured that his life would not be ordinary. Over the past decade, he has fulfilled that destiny. His father, one of the most successful drivers in the history of international motorsports, gave his son more than his name. Dale Earnhardt Sr. placed Dale Jr. in position to follow the footsteps and tire tracks he had left from Darlington to Daytona, from coast to coast, from one championship to the next. Entering 2001, Junior was set to turn the sport on its ear. Instead, his world was rocked in the first race of the season when Dale Sr., racing behind him in a wild finish to the Daytona 500, crashed into the outside wall and was killed. The racing world mourned, and Juniors life changed in many ways.
Dale Earnhardt Jr.: Out of the Shadow of Greatness tells the story of this remarkable young mans journey from teenage dreamer to Winston Cup winner, from Street Stock racer to 200 mph superstar, from son of the greatest to a champion in his own right. Against the backdrop of one of sports biggest tragedies, he continues to carry the Earnhardt name to new heights. This newly revised edition is a must for any NASCAR fan.
    Editorial Reviews:
Having the name Earnhardt basically guaranteed Dale Jr.'s eventual career, as both his grandfather and father were NASCAR drivers. Michael Hembree charts the life of the racing dynasty scion, which is given a crisply professional performance by Robert Sams, whose style is most reminiscent of an old newsreel. This only serves to highlight how much of the Earnhardt story already seems like classic American lore, from his father's tragic death to his own emergence as a prominent racer. Dale Earnhardt, Jr.: Out of the Shadow of Greatness is an in-depth biography of one the world's best and most beloved drivers.

Not a cookbook. Disappointing to that end, but gave some tales of the show.
Disappointment! Amazon description made me think this was a cook book, when rather it was an early scandle sheet regurgitation. Was immediately disappointed, but read book and found pictures and behind the scenes info from show somewhat entertaining. There is quite a bit of non-Paul Hollywood details, pages and pages that are off the subject completely, eg: hotel descriptions you will never need to know, people that knew people - but not much to do with Paul. There is a lot of filler in the pages that had nothing to do with title, and then it repeats the same filler. Will be donating to the local library.
