A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of historys most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors American Legends series, readers can get caught up to speed on the lives of Americas most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.
There has been no shortage of comedy acts in American history, but the most famous and popular of them all is The Three Stooges, an act that has become synonymous with slapstick. Bring up their name to any American or even ask about slapstick comedy, and invariably, certain images will come to mind, most of which came from the comedy shorts featuring three bumbling but likeable fools getting into all sorts of trouble due to their inability to think or behave properly.
The Three Stooges had several lineups over the decades, but two of them are most closely associated with the act. Two of the Howard brothers, Moe and Shemp, had their origins in 1920s vaudeville along with Larry Fine, but after Shemp quit, he was replaced by his younger brother Curly. Moe, Larry and Curly quickly became a hit in comedy shorts on screen, and even as other similar acts like Abbot and Costello went on to make full length films, the Stooges continued to star in shorts, producing the iconic scenes that everyone associates with them, from Larry asking what he did wrong to Moe trying to hit Curly and Curlys efforts to block him.
Members Reviews:
It is a good referance and recommend if you see Moes
Although I knew most of what I read, it was well worth the stroll down recall lane.
I did read a few things I did not know and it straighten out the chronology for me. I always had a little trouble with that apect; which film was first and so on.
It is a good referance and recommend if you see Moes, Larrys and Curly/Shemp/Curly Joes in everyday life.
Highly recommended if you are a new Stooges Fan.
Good reading
Interestingly informative. I've learned some things about these three (original stories) men that I never knew. Being an avid Three Stooges fan for most of my life, I've often wondered how these
guys got their start, and now I know. It was refreshing to learn about these guys and come to know them as three of the funniest numskulls you'll ever watch. I'll remain a fan of theirs until the end of the earth. They are definitely in a class all their own.
short, enjoyable read
This is a short book, like their comedy shorts! You will learn how the stooges were cheated by the studio and how Moe did his best to make sure they all lived comfortably. I enjoyed this book (read in one day).
The stooges as you never knew them
If you remember and enjoyed watching the stooges, give this book a read. There's probably a lot you never knew. Just when I thought I knew a lot about the stooges -- nope. Interesting background and facts.
This is a mini biography.
This is an abbreviated account not a full biography. It is one of many publications by this author that are about 50 pages. It is interesting and holds your interest. If you are looking for an in-depth biography then this may not be for you.
I would have liked a longer more in-depth biography.
