    Publisher's Summary:
The inspiring story of Isaiah Austin, the man who captured our hearts when he was made the honorary NBA draft pick after a shocking diagnosis ended his professional basketball career before he could even step onto the court.
"There are two choices in life: you make it your excuse or you make it your story." Isaiah Austin's mother shared these words of wisdom with him as a child as he came to terms with a torn retina that took away the ability to see with his right eye. Faced with adversity at such a young age, Isaiah had to choose - let his disability define him or overcome the challenge and shine.
Overcoming that challenge is exactly what Isaiah did as he made a name for himself on Baylor University's NCAA Division 1 basketball team. Everyone expected Isaiah to have a successful career in the NBA after college, but on June 21, 2014 - just five days before the NBA draft - Austin was diagnosed with Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects the body's connective tissue, putting him at risk of rupturing his heart if he continued to play basketball. In seconds Austin's hopes for a career in the NBA became impossible.
After hearing about Isaiah's diagnosis, NBA commissioner Adam Silver invited Austin to attend the 2014 draft as his personal guest. The league recognized Isaiah's courage, resilience, and determination in a bittersweet moment when he was made an honorary draft pick.
Rather than letting another challenge destroy his faith, Austin has once again strived to overcome adversity by becoming a spokesperson for The Marfan Foundation, raising awareness and understanding for the disease.
Proceeds from Dream Again will go to the Isaiah Austin Foundation, which provides support for the awareness and research of Marfan syndrome and those affected by it.

Inspiring Account of Persevering Through Trials
I'm a Baylor graduate and huge basketball fan so I knew I was going to buy this book when I heard about it. But to be honest, my expectations were pretty low. I've read plenty of books written by young athletes and even though they are entertaining, these books tend to be filled with poor writing and void of substance.
I could not feel more different about this book, however. It was well written and just flat out inspirational. If you have a Baylor or Big12 basketball connection, you will probably really enjoy the book because Isaiah spends a lot of the book talking about his college years. But really the audience should be much broader than that. Any basketball fan will enjoy the book. And anyone who has had a trial in life and needs encouragement to persevere will also find inspiration.
The fires of life have a tendency to refine our character and it is obvious from reading this book (and observing Isaiah Austin from a distance) that God has used these trials to mold and shape some great qualities in his life. He talks a lot about humility in the book and learning how to be a servant leader from his coaches at Baylor and some of the other coaching influences that he has had. It is obvious that these men have modeled the Christian faith to him and just proves the old adage that is more is caught than taught.
What a tribute to his mom and dad as well- to consistently pour into his life. I loved his description of having faith and trusting and how much harder it is to trust God when life gets difficult than to verbally claim faith.

A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, listeners can get caught up to speed on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.
Over the course of a career that spanned several decades and ranged from the stage to movies and television, Shirley MacLaine has been one of the most critically acclaimed actresses in America. After first being nominated for an Oscar in Some Came Running (1958), when she was still just in her mid-20s, she was nominated for two more for The Apartment (1960) and Irma la Douce (1963), all before she turned 30. Ironically, she won her first Academy Award for producing a documentary about her 1973 trip to China, and she finally won the Academy Award for Best Actress by playing a mother seeking to reconnect with her daughter in Terms of Endearment (1983), a full 25 years after earning her first nomination. Not surprisingly, she also added plenty of BAFTA and Golden Globe awards to the list during that time as well. Another 25 years after winning the Oscar for Terms of Endearment, MacLaine was nominated for an Emmy for portraying Coco Chanel in the television movie Coco Chanel (2008).

Very good listing of the events in the life of a well known performer and writer
I first learned about Shirley MacLaine as she performed on stage in Milwaukee WI. Little did I know at the time that she was much, much more than that.
This book gives us a list of all the wonderful ways she may have interacted with us, our beliefs, and lives. I really enjoyed learning more about her....and maybe I'll even revisit some of her past writings and movies!
    Really great.
Wonderful fact filled book. Really such an interesting book. I never knew Shirley MacLaine's story and this book does a wonderful job !! Kudos to Charles River Editions.
    Why I like Shirley Maclane.
I chose the 4 stars for the simple reason that the story was full of information that has not been in print.

    Publisher's Summary:
"Fame was thrilling only until it became grueling. Money was fun only until you ran out of things to buy." - Gloria Swanson.
It goes without saying that the most enduring image of Gloria Swanson is the famous shot of her in Sunset Boulevard (1950), head tilted backward, stating, "Alright, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close up." Indeed, for many, the very mention of "Gloria Swanson" conjures the name of "Norma Desmond," her character in Sunset Boulevard, directed by Billy Wilder.
That the shot of Desmond requesting her close-up remains indelibly imprinted in the minds of so many speaks in large part to the power of Sunset Boulevard, one of the most revered films of its times and the most famous film of Gloria Swanson's career. By dint of her performance in the film, Swanson has become almost synonymous with Hollywood's silent era.
In many respects, Swanson's status as the female face of the silent era is entirely apropos. Working in the 1920s for Cecil B. DeMille in his lavish productions, Swanson commanded salaries of more than $1 million per year, sums that Paramount was only too willing to provide for the virtual guarantee of high box office receipts that her films provided. Swanson worked with a cross section of famous silent era figures, such Mack Sennett and Charlie Chaplin (although her experience with Chaplin did not fare well) during her early years with Keystone, as well as collaborations with DeMille and Erich Von Stroheim during her more mature years.
Yet at the same time, the histrionics of Swanson's character in Wilder's film belie the sophistication that Swanson brought to the screen, as well as the salient role she played in shaping cinematic representations of women during the onset of the "new woman" in 1920s America.

Am Liking These Short Bios For Often Bringing to Light the Lives of People Whom Might Otherwise Get Lost in History
Interesting short book about the woman described as the "female face of the silent era" raking in more than $1 million per year at one time. Book gives more meaning to her comeback film "Sunset Boulevard"and now I have renewed interest to watch her old silent films like "Teddy at the Throttle" , "Stagestruck" (filmed with exceedingly rare 2-color technicolor process) and "The Trespasser" (first film in which she talked and sang). Fine book for picking up on lesser known facts like her poor upbringing, tough marriage to Wallace Beery, as well as giving you a mystery to solve as to her connection with Fred MacMurray of the tv show "My Three Sons." Informative book and I did enjoy!
A Most Amateurish Piece of Fluff
Sorry to say, a most amateurish, badly vetted piece of work. Many misspellings (including Swanson's last husband, whose last name was "Dufty," not "Duffy"), and doesn't even mention one of her very best, most mature silent films, "Manhandled." Swanson's bio on the IMDB is vastly more satisfying than this piece of fluff.
CHARLES RIVER EDITORS always does a great Bio.
Excellent and interesting biography of a Hollywood star.

Title: American Legends: The Life of Bruce Lee

    Language: English

    Publisher: Charles River Editors

    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
It would be nearly impossible for someone to pack more action into 32 years than Bruce Lee, whose name remains practically synonymous with martial arts excellence and kung-fu movies. He was undoubtedly the forerunner to martial arts stars who came in his wake, including Chuck Norris and Jackie Chan, a feat made all the more impressive by the fact that he grew up as a sickly child. His upbringing was simultaneously one of great privilege and hardship, which had a huge impact on his career down the road; even when he began to fill out his skinny frame, trouble on the streets created a whirlwind set of circumstances that all but required Lee to move to America before he was 20.
Despite being the most famous star of the genre and the man who almost singlehandedly popularized martial arts in the West, the films that helped make Lee a global icon were not even made in the United States but were instead shot and produced in Hong Kong, after which they received large-scale international distribution. Furthermore, for all of his fame, none of Bruce Lee's movies are commonly regarded as masterpieces, and they have always been viewed more as popular entertainment than as significant artistic achievements. Some might be able to name the short list of movies in which he starred and may know that Enter the Dragon (1973) is his most iconic picture, but his movies were never among those considered for Academy Award nominations.
Nonetheless, Bruce Lee has not been neglected by serious scholars of cinema, a fact that attests to the cultural significance of his films and his own star image. That Lee was able to become an international icon is all the more remarkable in light of the fact that he died suddenly and unexpectedly before the age of 33, leaving many to reasonably argue that he had yet to even reach the pinnacle of his career. As it was, the list of accomplishments speaks to his relentless work schedule and unparalleled drive.
Bruce Lee was arguably the greatest martial artist who ever lived, but he's also remembered today for being spiritual and philosophical. In addition to writing at length about those topics, Lee considered those elements essential to his physical fitness and training. In reference to a form of martial arts that came to bear his name, he explained, "Too much time is given to the development of skill and too little to the development of the individual for participation...[Jeet Kune Do] ultimately is not a matter of petty techniques but of highly developed spirituality and physique."

Bette Davis presided over Hollywood at a time in which the film industry was at its most influential. Every actress, from Katharine Hepburn to Ingrid Bergman and Ginger Rodgers, themselves now considered among Hollywood's greatest icons, lived in the shadow of Bette Davis. Not only was Davis a box-office sensation and commercial success - she became the highest paid actress in 1938 - but she garnered more critical acclaim than any other actress during the time, as evidenced by the fact that she was the first actress to be nominated for 10 Academy Awards. Even more than two decades after her death, Davis remains popular, and films of hers, most notably All About Eve (1950) and Now, Voyager (1942), are routinely viewed by the public and continue to be taught in college film classes.

Now, I wonder who'll continue it." - John Wayne

Hollywood has produced no shortage of famous movie stars, but none have been as culturally significant as John Wayne. Marion Morrison was born in a quintessentially quaint Midwestern town, but he eventually grew up to become John Wayne, the legend of the silver screen who embodied the Western frontier. Wayne starred in so many movies (nearly 150 in all) that when asked to name his worst, he joked that 50 of them were tied, but the excessive number allowed Wayne to portray heroes of all stripes, from cowboys to soldiers, and he was invariably charming, courageous, and full of rugged, masculine swagger.
Even as Westerns have certainly waned in popularity, Wayne himself has remained immensely popular, in part because he set the prototype for the heroic character, regardless of genre.

A brief but interesting review of Duke's life
This book provides a basic guideline of the Duke's life, but doesn't give a thorough treatise to the different phases as does more recent biographies. It gives a positive picture of his life relative to World War II. It's nice to get a basic glimpse of his lifetime.

"The stars seemed near enough to touch and never before have I seen so many. I always believed the lure of flying is the lure of beauty, but I was sure of it that night." - Amelia Earhart
During the early 20th century, groundbreaking technology revolutionized transportation both on the ground and in the sky, with new motors making automobiles and airplanes a reality in the 1910s. Around that same time, the feminist movement was underway in the United States, spearheaded by women seeking the right to vote, lobbying for the temperance movement, and trying to make their voices heard.
It was at that crossroads that flight pioneer Amelia Earhart found herself in 1919, the very year President Wilson and Congress were trying to shepherd through the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, giving women the right to vote. That year, Earhart was given a ride on a plane piloted by legendary air racer Frank Hawks, and as she recalled, "By the time I had got two or three hundred feet off the ground, I knew I had to fly."

Short read but fun to learn about Amelia Earhart. Not super long so of you're looking for a more in depth story then perhaps another book would be up your alley.
For me I just wanted something brief and to the point-you can read this in one or two sittings.
One Of The Best Short History Stories that I have Read
This book was about a woman aviator known as Amelia Earhart, she was the first woman to ever fly an airplane. I thought that it was really written well with alot of facts and great photographs of her and her plane. The author did a great job with keeping the reader interested with the story and it felt that you were back in history and were going through it with her as she prepared for all of her flights. I thought this book was well written and I thought it was well worth reading and I think it would benefit any person to read it that wants to learn more about her. This book was bought on amazon.

    Publisher's Summary:
Cooked Raw is the dramatic memoir detailing Matthew Kenneys remarkable and riveting journey through the culinary world and his provocative exploration of the future of food for the 21st century.
As a youth who embraced healthy living as a teenager, swearing off processed foods to heal a body badly damaged by a poor diet, Kenney was an unlikely chef candidate. Yet, as a chef in late 80s New York, Kenney soon found himself on national television, carrying full pages in fashion magazines, and being flown all over the world to consult and appear. As his career and empire grew, Kenney became more and more disconnected from the work he was doing and searched for a way out. Eventually, his overextended business crumbled and made for years of gossip columns, shattering the life as he knew it.
This ending, while brutally painful, evolved into one of the most exhilarating stories in the food world, as Kenney embraced his passions for a sustainable lifestyle. From turban wearing gurus pushing powders, cleanses and colonics, to sophisticated housewives searching for health, Kenney shocked the culinary world with his intention to prepare food not only without cooking but also without heat, devoid of animal products and processed foods: a cuisine made of plants and no heat. Raw food for a new world.
Bringing to light that food and health go hand in hand, Kenney used every opportunity to improve his new raw cuisine and its methods. Speaking at TED conferences, moving to Los Angeles and raising awareness globally on how great tasting food can promote health, his brand grew. Nearly 25 years after becoming a disillusioned young chef, Kenney felt at home in his own life for the first time. Not only was he healthy and happy, he had identified the future of food.
