    The Tower of London
While this book was geared for young adults, I enjoyed it more than many adult "Historical Fictions". The reader does a great job, and the plot is both interesting and plausible. The historical details help throw a new light on the generations of England/Scotland fueds.
This is not a "Harry Potter" type fantasy. Instead the book relies on actual historical touches(Chamberpots, Chimneysweeps, Ratcatchers, etc.) which I found just as interesting. This could be a great listen for a family car trip, but keep in mind that this story and the Tower of London centered around prisoners and executions. The details aren't gory and glorified, but they are not glossed over either.
We found a gem in this book.
What made the experience of listening to The Ravenmaster's Secret the most enjoyable?
The narrator was excellent and that makes all the difference to me concerning an audible book. His voice was just the right pitch and tone. The different voices he used for the characters made us visualize them better.
What about Simon Vances performance did you like?
We loved it for all the reasons I stated above.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Yes, when Ned left with Maddie.
    enjoyable
this maybe a book directed to kids but i enjoyed it and learned some things historical information i did not know before.

    Critic Reviews:
"The historical setting and the vocabulary may challenge younger readers but ensure that older ones will find the book a rewarding adventure, one not soon forgotten and one that lends itself to great discussion." (School Library Journal) "Transcends boundaries of gender and genre, with something to offer fans of equestrian fare, historical fiction, and battlefield drama alike." (Booklist)
    Members Reviews:
    Pretty good, but...
    Any additional comments?
The setting for the story is great, but the characters lack depth. Most characters have little progression throughout. The horse has none, as it's perfect and stays perfect. William has flare ups of imperfection, but they're never true problems in the story. Gavin is the main one with any progression. Also, this book like most modern books, gives a PC flavor to the crusades with the noble Muslims vs. bloodthirsty Christians. It detracts from the story but doesn't kill it entirely. Still, you love the horse and enjoy the story with mixed bits of history despite the flaws.
Chapters in audio book do not align
My son is reading this book for school. I downloaded the audio to help him. However it is extremely difficult to find his location because the audio book chapters do not match to actual book.
    Entertaining But Not Authentic
This book is entertaining, but that is about all that can be said for it. There are so many passages that had my children, wife, and me rolling our eyes in amusement and incredulity. Here are a few of the many examples. At one point after a bloody battle, brave knights and Saracens are lying severely wounded on the battlefield, and the only one getting any attention from the people responsible for healing is the horse. The Sultan goes out of his way to send special medication for a horse owned by the enemy. In another instance upon returning from the Crusades, the people give more credit to the horse than to any of the returning knights. Throughout the book supposedly devout Christians and Muslims swear oaths by and pray in the name of the horse. Not at all in keeping with people of the 13th Century!
The Narrator does a decent job with female voices and young boy voices, but her adult male voices all sound angry and pompous in any occasion.

    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 79 votes
    Genres: Teens, Ages 11-13
    Publisher's Summary:
Ursula Riggs has always been an Ugly Girl. A loner with fierce, staring eyes, Ursula has no time for petty high school stuff like friends and dating, or at least that's what she tells herself. Ursula is content with minding her own business. And she doesn't even really know Matt Donaghy.
But Ursula is the only person who knows what Matt really said that day...and she is the only one who can help him.
In her first novel for young adults, acclaimed author Joyce Carol Oates has created a provocative and unflinching story of friendship and family, and of loyalty and betrayal.
    Critic Reviews:
"Oates has written a fast-moving, timely, compelling story." (School Library Journal)
"Screen celebs Hilary Swank and Chad Lowe deliver alternating chapters in perfect counterpoint, superbly capturing the divergent emotional journeys in affect, tone, and pacing." (AudioFile)
"Distinguished novelist Oates' first young adult novel is a thought-provoking, character-driven drama." (Booklist)

    Prose that grabs you
I've secondary school for 10 years and spent time taling with hundreds of adolescents. The author really captures the voice of real teenagers, never as simple as adults think. The protaganists are complex, authentic, and well-written. The intro to the two young people really grabbed me. The narrative was very compelling.
    novel for EFL
Would you listen to Big Mouth & Ugly Girl again? Why?
    Great voices, especially Ursula.
Have you listened to any of Hilary Swank and Chad Lowe s other performances before? How does this one compare?
    No.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    It made me think.
    Any additional comments?
Very interesting book for my students, too. Especially Ursula as a tough and at same time insecure girl might help my female students in their process of growing up.
Hilary & Chad are great as teen outcasts
Would you consider the audio edition of Big Mouth & Ugly Girl to be better than the print version?
Hilary Swank and Chad Lowe did a great job of adding depth to the characters - particularly Hilary's portrayal of a gawky, teenaged girl irritated with her parents and disenfranchised at school until she turns things around by taking the moral highground and sticking up for a classmate.
Have you listened to any of Hilary Swank and Chad Lowe s other performances before? How does this one compare?
    No.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I think it's a great story particularly for those who can identify with being an outsider, which many of us are at some point in our lives but very often as a teen.
    great
I was able to follow it in the book. And the exagerations in the voice were great
    Awesome story! Amazing narration!!!
I loved this story! This is an instant classic.
The narrative was spit on by both Hilary Swank and Chad Lowe.

    Huh
Would you try another book from Sarah Dessen and/or Katharine Powell?
Yes, I like her books mostly
What do you think your next listen will be?
    The Truth about Forever
What aspect of Katharine Powells performance would you have changed?
    It seemed dry and forced
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
It was very predictable and I couldn't really get into it like I could with her other books
Not one of Sarah Dessen's best
Love Sarah Dessen, but this is not one of her best. The characters are not well-developed and none are very likable.

Good Stories Marred by Lackluster Performance
The stories in this book are clever and well written, but I would recommend reading them instead of listening to this version. The narrator (the author herself) is unfortunately a little monotonous and doesn???t put much effort, if any, into differentiating between the characters as a good narrator would. As her enunciation is lacking and there is so little enthusiasm in the narration, the whole thing comes off like a teenager reading something in class that they don???t find very interesting. The effect is soporific and dull. It???s a shame as the stories would otherwise be a treat. Well written, poor execution.
    Really enjoyable stories
I'm learning to love Holly Black's work (although I suspect Valiant is always going to be my favourite).
Nice mix of stories with a huge range of characters.

    Title: Witches
    Author: Ednah Walters
    Narrator: Stephanie Terry

Length: 13 hrs and 58 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-22-15
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 233 votes
    Genres: Teens, Ages 11-13
    Publisher's Summary:
Witches continues the story of Raine and Torin. This story's timeline overlaps with Cora's in Souls.
The Norns think they've won, but it's hard to control a teenager, let alone a powerful one....
Raine Cooper's life should be perfect. She's an Immortal Seeress, most likely to be elected prom queen, and envied by the girls at Kayville High for dating the dreamy quarterback, Torin St. James. Instead she's haunted by the smug facial expressions the Norns' wore during their last meeting.
As a Norn-in-training, Raine crossed the line long ago when she sided with the Valkyries and Mortal Witches. When the Norns return with demands of their own, Raine feels trapped. She must repair the battlegrounds and wipe out the memories of every Mortal witness. Torin tries to convince her that the Norns are manipulating her, but she refuses to listen. At least until the Norns' demands focus on someone she loves.
When Raine refuses to cooperate with them, their punishment is swift and gut wrenching, turning her pain into fury. Raine plots revenge on a massive scale and makes deals with unsavory allies. Her goal? Total destruction of the entire Norn race. Raine's only hope of salvation is Torin, but how much will he sacrifice to save her?
    Members Reviews:
An excellent continuation in the Runes series
What did you love best about Witches?
Onyx is funny, fierce, and occasionally sweet. Also, I thoroughly enjoyed Ingrid's character development.
What did you like best about this story?
The story is complex, compelling, and well done.
Have you listened to any of Stephanie Terrys other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have listened to four of the Runes series books, including this one. I liked this narration the best. I still found Cora's voice a bit annoying, but not as much as in other books written from Raine's POV.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
It's a race to keep control of her life. Eff the Norns.
    Fresh story series
I found this series to be a fresh YA series. While it stays pretty true to the overall genre, the components aligned to Odin and his pantheon into an alternative universe was compelling and kept my interest. I enjoy the overlap of characters and focus on them for more than just one book like so many do. I ran through all of the books available and am looking forward to upcoming installments.
Absolutely the best series I have ever read, EDNAH WALTERS you're the greatest writer.
I loved this series and would love to read another very soon!! Runes, immortals, and witches, such great fun!
    Looking forward to the next
Love this series, but the ending wasn't satisfying for me. It kind of fell flat and felt too easy. But I'm still looking forward to the next book because I love the characters.
    Amazing
If you could sum up Witches in three words, what would they be?
    Torin Torin Torin
What other book might you compare Witches to and why?
Well lets see, maybe the City of Bones. Two lovers with something or someone always out to get them. But then it isn't the same at all in other ways.
What does Stephanie Terry bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
I did enjoy listening. It brings depth to the characters that I wouldn't have gotten otherwise.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I did laugh in a few areas.

Great for teens who like horror but dont think they like to read
My teenage son continues to read Darren Shan even though technically he is probably too old for this series. These are great books for any young person who likes horror and thinks they don't like to read. All Shan's series were devoured by my son through his middle school and high school years.
    My teenager loves this series.
My teenage son puts down his Ipod for Darren Shan and this series. He also loved the Demonata series. Kudos to Darren Shan for making a reader of my electronically addicted teenager.
