I thought the ending with all the army entrenched against Dave and Clete became a little far fetched. Probably could have achieved the same with fewer people involved

this was my fifth book in the David robicheaux novel series. it was the best yet it really helped to already know the characters

Not the best Dave Rubicheaux book

I have enjoyed quite a few of the books in this series, and come to expect more from Lee Burke. The story here is weak, the repeating motive of Alifair and co. under threat of death once too many, the bloody end-battle over done.

Excellent story. Just wish it wasn't abridged.

Too much of the book is missing and that left me disappointed.. Now I have to read the book too.

Overall a lovely listen.

I like my listening easy some days and the Agatha Raisin series gives you that. This is another good quick listen that will get you happily from A to B.

As a reader progresses through the Agatha Raisin titles available on Audible... they settle into M.C. Beatons formula for the novels contruction. Change would not gel with expectation.

Completely hooked!

Not quite as dark as Mankell, not quite as horrific or convoluted as Larsson, yet as gripping as either and with superbly rounded characters who leave you wanting to read more. I read 'Mercy' first, which led me to read this; this one stands alone, though you'll have a better insight into the members of Department Q if you start with 'Mercy'.

Unusually, and quite unlike 'Mercy', we know the identity of the criminals from very early on. This in no way detracts from the suspense, and this was one of those audio books which led me to be late for things as I had to keep reading. I was completely hooked, and am waiting for Audible to bring us the next two titles involving Department Q asap!

Brilliant...what a treat!

I loved this book.....it's brilliantly written and narrated. This was my first Jussi Adler Olsen experience and was a random pick... I will definitely be downloading Mercy and hoping it's as good. The plot is gripping and in depth with some unexpected twists and turns and typical Nordic darkness. However the book is more than just the plot.... the Department Q characters are brought to life. I love Carl and Assad and their relationship with the mad Rose...this really draws you in and makes you want to read the rest of the series. If you like dark, hard hitting nordic thrillers then this is for you. For me this is up there with Jo Nesbo (who is my favourite) I literally couldn't put it down and was straight on the internet to find out which other books are available in English..Great book for those of us who like grittier, dark crime novels!

dead, dead good

like "Mercy", this is an exciting, entertaining listen, augmented by the superb narration of steven pacey. it's a good, long book, but it holds your interest as the different events unfold and teeth are gritted when hearing of the various offences committed. and it all stacks up. there's no point where i thought "what?! that's just ridiculous!"

recommended.

note: my only frustration is that the next book is only available in swedish.

One of the Best in the Series

This title begins with such a lovely literary device I found it hard to stop smiling despite the subject matter, or at least its implication. It ends so well, too and unexpectedly. Generally I pride myself in picking the twist, but there are so many here it is hard to cover them all off and I certainly did not pick the last one.

It's hard to write much more about this title without giving away something important and, as I hate spoilers, I don't intend to do that. It's probably enough to say that it is up there with the best Harry stories, that Sean Barrett does another excellent job with the characters and that I am intrigued to read the tenth installment.

It's difficult to say. It's one of the only series that makes me feel extremely close to the protagonists.

He knows how to underline a scene with intonation, rythm and pauses. It's an act all by it self. Certainly my favourite narrator together with James Masters.

The way Nesbo toys with the reader. A conversation, a scene, a character... he leads you masterfully to think one way, who is speaking, who you are looking at, but it is artful misdirection.

He captures the flawed, disillusioned Harry as he has aged over since 'The Bat' He has become more world weary with each novel yet you still want him to finally the find peace he dare not hope for.

The Sequel That Isn't Equal

My understanding is that this is the second of a trilogy that Taylor Stevens is writing that features the character Munroe. I read The Informationist (book one) and thought it was entertaining enough to go another round. "I wanted to like this," sounds like an idiotic thing to say--of course you want to like anything you read--but alas, wanting didn't make it so, and I reluctantly have to say this was a bit of a stinker. Definitely several notches down from The Informationist. You can't say the author doesn't know her material (having escaped her own cult upbringing), but aside from her lucid observations of the cult mentality, the story stumbles, fettered by cliches and predictability, and falls flat. Had narrator Hillary Huber not made this such a smooth and painless listen--I probably would not have stuck it out.

Really Enjoyed A Wild Ride

I can't tell whether it is the fantastic performance by Hillary Huber (I would listen to her read the phone book) or the writing of Taylor Stevens. The story is delicate and the violence often and bloody. I do not like the subject matter (cult abuse of children) or the gratuitous violence and yet the book was hugely entertaining. The central character is compelling, if somewhat of a superwoman. I will read her next book as long as Hillary Huber narrates it.

An excellent story - will pull you in

Every now and then I pick up an audiobook that just sucks me in and when I emerge from the other side of it, all I remember is the rush of the ride and none of the rocks I may have bounced off along the way. This is one of those books. The slow build of tension, the moments of lightning quick violence, the vivid settings, and the well-developed characters that seemed almost real kept me listening until all hours of the morning.

Munroe is a fascinating character and in the second book in this series the reader gets more insight into the complexity of her psychological makeup as well as the changes shes undergoing based on events in the previous book and the choices she makes in this one.

BEWARE! You may have already bought this book!

This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Someone who didn't purchase the unabridged Vows of Silence released on 5-4-09 would enjoy this book a lot more than I did.

When I saw this Susan HiIl book, with a release date of 12-9-11, I chose it immediately, thinking it must be the next in the Serrailler series. Once I started listening to it, I realized it was not new at all.

Both the 2009 and 2011 releases are listed as unabridged. Both have the same narrator. The first has a length of 9 h 59 min; the 2011 is 10 h 5 min. The cover photos are different.

Why are both on the site? Different release date and covers?

I feel ripped off and deceived.

I'm sorry to have to give the book one star, but I want to get the attention of other Hill fans so they don;t make the same mistake / aren't deceived.

Love this book, love this series.

The Simon Serrailer series is a well-written, engaging series of mysteries that feature interesting characters and enough suspense to keep you engrossed. But more than the mysteries, it is the characters themselves that keep me coming back for more.

I'm Hooked on This Series

I loved this book! It is a "police procedural", but there is so much more to it. It is the story of the of the Serrailler family. Their story is complex, interesting and moving. The author does an excellent job of describing the family members and the dynamics of their relationships.

A number of other characters are introduced and developed. One thing that kept me interested in the story was wondering what roll these people would play in the in the murders.

Simon Serrailler is fascinating. He is excellent at his job, but is also struggling to determine what he wants from his life.

The solution to these murders is in this book. What will happen in the life of the Serrailler's is an ongoing story. I'm looking finding out how that story goes in future books.

I have read several of these books "out of order". It hasn't made the books any less enjoyable. However, I expect I will listen to them more than once. When I do I will read them "in order".

Haskell books better on the page

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I enjoyed the Thin Woman so much when re-reading it for the nth time recently that I thought I'd find the audiobooks. There are only two available here and this is the better one, but Ellie Haskell has somehow become a minor character in a Wacky Farce Parade that drags quite a bit.

What was most disappointing about Dorothy Cannells story?

The doormat that Ellie's become. It makes the humor pretty forced.

Mostly laugh, it was fun, with some sadness but lighthearted so you could feel uplifted no matter what.

Within 2 paragraphs she already had me guffawing with abandon.

quickly devoured

A fast read. Be warned though, this book does have some unflinchingly brutal dog-fight passages, and that kind of thing can be a lotta no fun. But luckily Pelecanos takes some satisfying shots at the culture, calling out posers who think of a scary dog as a status symbol, as well as the idiotic `90s dog fighting boom, where everyone who wasn't fighting a pit bull certainly wanted you to think they were. In fact, even though this book was published in 2005, it feels very grounded in the `90s, full of that era's music, sometimes in flashbacks, sometimes not. The main characters are memorable, too. The two major players, slow burning ex-con Lorenzo and Rachel (day and night versions), are both introduced efficiently and effectively, and the author does wonders with Lorenzo early on by having the reader ride along on his thankless day job for the Humane Society, as he works to convince deadbeat dog owners to improve their beasts' low standard of living. The plight of the canines in the book mirrors the humans, of course ("You can't save every animal."), and even though the main plot regarding a childhood friend's drug dealing empire circling the drain and the young, hot-headed psycho all headed for a showdown is well-worn territory, I still stuck around for the finale. As far as the prose, it's suitably rough, slang-ridden, and unpolished but never distracting, although there was that unintentionally hilarious metonymy where the author kept referring to a particular body part as a woman's "sex." But it is a confident book, so much so that you may get the feeling Pelecanos wrote it one-handed. Quickly devoured.

Pelecanos and the underbelly of Washington D.C.

Pelecanos's propensity to "get cute" with dialogue is refreshing because of its uniqueness at first, and this wears thin over the course of an entire book. It is enlightening (especially in light of Black Lives Matter/Dallas police executions, etc.) to have Pelecanos vividly describe the mindset of criminals and the very few Good Guys in his books, as well as the underlying subculture of the Washington D.C. area. I get the impression, for example, that I could make a small fortune in scrap metal should I come up with a way to recover all the firearms thrown into the Anacostia river.

City Drama

I'm a Pelecanos fan, but I hadn't read one in many years. I came across this title recently and decided to buy it. It's a suspenseful, authentic crime drama set in and around Washington, D.C. It didn't disappoint.

Tighter than Tight

My brother had sworn up and down for years that Pelecanos was the real thing, and this was the first book I picked out, somewhat randomly, to read.

Do you love or hate Inspector Montalbano?

Either you love Inspector Montalbano, or you are fed up with his travails, which don't change much from one book to the next. I'm somewhere in the middle of this spectrum, so it was with some hesitation that I picked this up, but I was delighted to find it to be one of Camilleri's best mysteries as well as one of most amusing in the series. One must pay close attention to the characters, for the story is full of twists and turns. Yes, Montalbano is growing old, a fact he never allows you to forget, but for me, he is not stale. Camilleri, who will turn 90 this year, is still going strong!

Grover Gardner, as usual, presents an excellent narration.

I love listening to these books so much I listen to each one several times. the story is about Inspector Montalbano are so interesting, funny and charming. Grover gardener is the perfect Voice for Inspector Montalbano.

What would have made The Potters Field better?

Resume the sensible and intelligent decisions and actions of Montalbano. Eliminate such idiotic moves as trying to resolve an issue with Meme by spying instead of simply confronting, explaining the whole story of Lattes instead of simply saying " iwas trying to avoid the guy, not immediately connecting the first mates disappearance with the body discovered...even the slowest reader could discern a poor attempt to drag out a story with protracted tangents

Andrea Camilleri and Grove Garden Are Outstanding

It's wonderful to see that Andrea Camilleri keeps Salvo Montalbano, Mimi, Fazio, Catarella and the rest of the of the loyal team of the Vigata police force interesting, and still solving murders. Chief Inspector Montalbano is at it again, this time with his trusted investigator Fazio. Mimi is acting up, lying to his wife and causing tension in the office. An unusual dead body is found in a plastic bag in a very muddy field on a very rainy day. Right away Mimi is insisting that Montalbano should allow him to have complete control of the investigation.
