Not Doyle's Sherlock Holmes

I get the feeling that Riccardi is trying to create his own Sherlock Holmes. On two occasions within these stories he seems to want to make Holmes' "more compassionate" and especially paint him as being more sympathetic toward the opposite sex. Doyle makes it perfectly clear that his Sherlock is indifferent concerning them.

Almost completely missing from these stories are Sherlock's extraordinary ability to immediately form correct conclusions after only seconds of observing a person, or thing. Actually, this quality is the unique trademark of Holmes. How could one present a Holmes mystery without it?

Conan Doyle's stories were all about the character, Sherlock Holmes, and what a prodigious character he is! However, Riccardi seems satisfied with letting Holmes make "cameo appearances" throughout his mysteries.

Simon Prebble does very well portraying several characters but , in my opinion, a poor Holmes. Of course, I'm used to listening to Charlton Griffin.

One of the great things about Doyle's SH stories are that they are concise. These aren't.

Having said all of this "The Oriental Casebook of Sherlock Holmes: Nine Adventures from the Lost Years" is worth listening to if you are an avid SH fan which I am!

Fun Adventures

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. I thought these stories were fun and entertaining. I never solved any of the puzzles before the answers were revealed, so I was pretty entertained. I'm not sure that this would appeal to diehard fans who prefer a more orthodox style. The audiobook The House of Silk did a better job of following the more Sir Arthur Conan Doyle style.

Wonderful narrator

Nancy Bell's Biggie and the Poisoned Politician is the first in her Dead Letter Mysteries. It is narrated by J. R. Weatherford, a 12-year-old who lives in Job's Crossing, Texas, with his grandmother, Mrs. Fiona Wooten Weatherford, aka Biggie. Ms. Bell creates an authentic voice for J. R. who reports on words and activities of adults without understanding them, in much the same way as Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird and Huck in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. This is exalted company for a mystery writer's creation. The characterization of the novel is also strong. Biggie and J. R. are well developed, but a particular strength is the secondary characters--Willie Mae, who is a voodoo woman as well as Biggie's maid; Rosebud, her husband of the tall tales; Monica, J. R.'s friend who has hair only on one side of her head because she was placed too close to the fire when she was a baby. The townspeople, especially the Daughters (of the Texas Revolution), are individual and authentic, as is the depiction of how things are still done in small Southern towns. The language and the storytelling rhythm are genuine. The plot isn't as strong, though Ms. Bell is fair in giving the appropriate clues. Once it becomes clear what's happening (discovery of lignite coal on Biggie's land and the attempt to acquire the land). the perpetrators are fairly obvious. But the plot is not the reason for reading this mystery--it's J. R. as narrator. I recommend Biggie and the Poisoned Politician highly.

Biggie Starts with a Biggie

The first book in the Biggie series starts with a bang. A car belonging Biggie's boarder explodes, the mayor dies after a town meeting, and Biggie has to deal with someone trying to put a landfill on her property. The story is told in the narrative of Biggie's 12-year-old grandson, J.R., and makes you laugh out loud at times.

This is a good mystery, but I enjoyed it better for the strength of the characters, the setting, and the relationship between Biggie and J.R. A fun, easy read for a hot summer day. Enjoy!

Gur Buster

This was my first read of Nancy Bell and I wasn't disappointed. Actually, I listened to the recorded version during my trips to and from work. The plot was interesting but the characters were outstanding. Makes me want to meet Biggie and JR. Many of the whimsical rural saying brought sweet memories of my childhood visits to relatives in the country of NC - guess those saying are universal in the country.

Brain damaged?

While I wanted to know how it ended,I I was angered by all the poor choices the main characters made. From almost the very beginning they had serious doubts. It was like watching a low budget 'b' movie, where the stupid heroine, has experienced all of her many friends murdered, STILL checks out the strange noise in the dark creepy basement alone. Come on! The ladies just keep on working for the proven untrustworthy clients. Please spare me. They've learned absolutely nothing from their past cases.

Couldn't finish

I liked the book a bit, but the silly ghost character was too much. I don't mind unconventional characters, but this one didn't even ring true...even for a ghost. What's that they say about alternative realities having to be believable? I was disappointed because it's always great to find a new series or author you like.

Bruce DeSilva's Rogue Island is steeped in nostalgia; ostensibly set in the present, it mourns a dying (dead?) world where the newspaper journalists embodied here by one Liam Mulligan - are campaigners for truth and justice, obstinately following leads from door to door, working round the clock to get their name on the by-line. The arson attacks that plague the city of Providence seem almost honest in their Luddite criminality compared with the real villains of the book: social media whiz kids and property developers, both of whom are guilty in DeSilva's eyes of erasing the past and bastardising once-familiar landscape.

A lot of modern crime writing stakes out new literary territory, consciously imbuing a previously-overlooked environment with a semi-mythological sense of possibility; Jonathan Lethem achieved this feat in Motherless Brooklyn. In Rogue Island, the geography comes with its own inferiority complex: the locally-set movie Dumb and Dumber is a repeated reference point. But DeSilva's Rhode Island is a rich creation, one which he seems to have looked backward in order to achieve. It's populated with a cast of characters that Damon Runyon would recognise: bookies and monsters, tough-talking editors. The one character with a modern job description is the son of the newspaper's publisher. Needless to say, Mulligan views him with contempt, although Woodman's sympathetic portrayal signals that he will emerge as one of the good guys.

Mulligan is a late-thirties Pulitzer-prize winner in a world where the print journalist is as anachronistic as the camel-coat wearing private detective, many of whose trappings Mulligan shares a protracted adolescent with an ex-wife problem. Jeff Woodham's engaging portrayal fends off the bitterness that smudges the edges of the character. When Mulligan repeatedly calls the same number to chase a lead, Woodham's range of comic voices are a treat. He's at his most impassioned when Mulligan eulogises newspapers, "the only institution that people trust" or rather, as the distinct shift of tone here makes clear, it's DeSilva whos doing the eulogising. I had some serious doubts about this one. Not a big fan of reporter based crime stories but wow was I wrong. And the narrator does a simply superb job as well. This may (I hope) be the first book in a great series, and a welcome addition to my authors list now that we have lost Robert Parker's Spenser series.

No The Thrill is not Gone

I was first introduced to Leonid McGill about three weeks ago after hearing about this book on the Tom Joyner Morning show. I am so thrilled to have been listening because I have not been able to get enough of this character. A man who knows that he must make up for his past by doing what he can to help people is such an attractive man!

Mr. Willis is an EXCELLENT narrator. He moves with ease when changing characters. I'm not sure if I am in love with Leonid McGill, Walter Mosley or Mirron Willis.

Start from the first bood to know and appreciate who Mr. McGill and his family are.

Out of place/Out of time

I enjoyed this book. More than the other McGill books I've read so far.

But something about the story kept bugging me. I didn't realize what it was until I got near the end.

I grew up in NY, living there throughout the 2000s. The dialogue (or maybe the voice interpretation), vernacular, and slang used by the characters are not what you would find in 21st century New York.

This story, and the two before it, felt like it would be more at place set in the 1950s along side Easy Rawlings.

Again, enjoyed the story, but the dialogue feels out of place for the era the story is set.

Enjoyed but too many names

I love both Eazy and Lenoid stories but this story had too many characters to keep track of. If you go a day or so without listening, more than likely you have to go back to understand. This book was the most confusing.

Style Problems Have Been Resolved, Better LAPD Noir than the Prequel

I am surprised at the reviewer that could not understand why a villain would want to collect data. The book is set in 1984. What happens in 1984? Big Brother tries to infiltrate our minds. Who is best when it comes to infiltrating our minds, stealing our private thoughts and reprogramming them? A psychiatrist, of course.

The style of Because the Night feels very mature. I was never tempted to pick up a red editing pencil, not once. The characterizations were better, too, and Ellroy achieves a much better noir effect than he did in Blood on the Moon. No one is innocent in this book. Ellroy has ALMOST achieved the LAPD that we love to hate from Black Dahlia.

Blood on the moon was a decent effort from a novice novelist. Because the night is a big improvement on many levels. The plot is tighter, the psychological motivations are compelling and it never drags.

So Dark I Hesitate To Finish The Trilogy

If I considered Book #1 dark, Because The Night takes the reader a quantum step beyond!

But then that's James Ellroy through and through. His world is peopled with bent cops, drunks, dopers, petty criminals, whores, twisted psychopaths with an utter conviction in their own brilliance... and, of course, a protagonist continually dealing with demons of his own.

One of His Best

Part of the trilogy books of legendary detective Lloyd Hopkins, James Ellroy again demonstrates why he is the preeminent writer in this genre. Admittedly biased since I have read and collected all of his works, Because of the Night builds and defines a character so flawed and driven, and tortured by his greatness of his analytical gift. Like the rest of Ellroy's books, you won't be able to put it down.

Who changed the channel when its getting good!?

What made the experience of listening to Mr. Monk in Outer Space the most enjoyable?

I have always been a fan of the Monk TV series and continuing books. This story follows Monk like you would expect. One thing is that it goes into a more complicated plot than a TV series would have allowed.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Mr. Monk in Outer Space?

Mr. Monk attend the Sci-Fi convention is classic. I also enjoyed revisiting the Monk brothers relationship.

I enjoyed the book but was very confused by the conclusion. At the height of the action at the conclusion, there seems to be a good 5 minutes missing from the story. There is a jump cut of Mr. Monk and Natalie at the security desk getting a look at the killer to Mr. Monk sweeping up glass and Natalie's car spontaneously moving from the street where it's parked to inside a building somewhere. I had to look up the book on Wikipedia just to figure out what happened. I wonder if anyone else's recording was similarly flawed. This is the single reason why I only gave the performance 3 stars. I would have rated it higher otherwise.

OK Book

The book was OK, but the end didn't make sense. Apparently, some pages were skipped because Natalie was in the building, in the car, then in the building again. And she mentioned driving through the window, which never happened - at least in the reading it didn't! Please be sure the entire book is read; otherwise, why are we buying them from Audible???

Too much filler

As other reviewers noted, part of the story near the end is left out. Other than that, I have two chief complaints: 1) There's WAY too much time taken up by Natalie's constant musings over things like her situation in life and what makes Monk the way he is . 2) Compared with the TV show, Monk is just too annoying in the book. His character annoys people in the TV show, but there is almost always a degree of humor in it. Few instances of Monk's being annoying in the book are amusing.

I really enjoyed the first two books but the way Karen disrespects her chain of command in this book goes too far. This may be my military background but, this book was hard to finish.

This series is better than Patterson n I've read them all. I can't wait to get to the next one in the series. Kept me guessing n at the seat of my pants-couldn't sleep till I finished it.

LAPD robbery-homicide detective Hayden Glass finds himself in another hot situation when the young prostitute hes been seeing in San Francisco is kidnapped. His efforts to find and save her put him in direct conflict with a corrupt element of the San Francisco Police Department, the FBI, and the local Russian Mob. Each faction uses Hayden like a pawn, and each has its own reason to take the young woman away. Hayden himself wonders if his motive for pursuing the girl is altruistic or if its his sex addiction calling the shots. Stephen Jay Schwartz spent a number of years as the director of development for film director Wolfgang Petersen. His career includes numerous feature-film writing assignments as well as work for the Discovery Channel.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A somewhat plausible story. A continuation of BOULEVARD but in a boring, tedious manner.

What could Stephen Jay Schwartz have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Stopped while Schartz was ahead. This second book offers nothing new and just feels like the previous novel is being BEAT to death. And, who cares?
