I was becoming Obsessed!

UFO was entering it's first decade of work on 1978's "Obsession". This would be their 7th studio release and their 2nd with producer Ron Nevison, who did their great album "Lights Out", in 1977. This would be the last album with guitar god Michael Schenker (until 1995). Solid rocker in "Only You Can Rock Me", Schenker and Raymond cover this track. "Pack It Up (And Go)", sounds like a Zeppelin tune from "Physical Graffiti", strong rocker. Pete Way always had a problem with strings, he just never thought of it as a rock 'n' roll thing, but i find "Arbory Hill", a pretty little ditty, Michael on flute. "Ain't No Baby", was inspired by John Waite of the Babys, I guess Chrysalis' office took down UFO's posters and put up The Babys in it's place, a nice melodic rocker. "Looking Out For No. 1", a lovely ballad with beautiful strings, Schenker puts in a nice solo. The steam rolling "Hot 'N' Ready". The great "Cherry", Way does a terrific job on bass here, this should of been a top 40 hit! The hard chargin' "You Don't Fool Me", the strutting guitar of Schenker is awesome. The string arrangement returns with the (reprise) of "Looking Out For No. 1". "One More For The Rodeo", a smooth rocker with some of Phil Mogg's best vocals. "Born To Lose", Schenker's guitar and strings melt into each other on this great closing track. 3 live tracks on the bonus material, they would release their ultimate live album in 1979, "Strangers In The Night", then in 1980 they would release "No Place To Run", with new guitarist Paul Chapman. After this release there would be 2 camps of UFO fans.

Close Encounters

When I was in college and this UFO album came out, I HAD to have it (I was a big fan of their music obviously). It was so nice to hear some new and fresh UFO rock at the time and this album found its way to the turntable at every party we had. "Only You Can Rock Me" started off the whole affair and the album just got better as it went on. All these years later I decided to check it out again as I was feeling nostalgic. It came in the mail and I couldn't wait to get it home and play it. Some albums I've revisited with have sounded dated and out of place and are better served as fun memories of the past, not so with this CD. It still maintains it's integrity and the sounds are as fresh as the day they were originally released. Then again UFO was very melodic and intelligent metal in the day and still is as far as I'm concerned.

A bit far-fetched, but enjoyable

I've listened to most of the Anne Granger books available on the Audible list and have found them all worth listening to. I rate this book a little lower than others, for, although I don't expect realism in her books, this one seems a bit more far-fetched in the number of people in a small community who are willing to murder or attempt murder. The village of Bamford must have the highest murder rate in the UK!

Victoria solves another one

I'm becoming very fond of Victoria Trumbal & her intimate knowledge of Martha's Vineyard. The ending of this one was a real surprise!! Although the action is much gentler & slower than most of the Thrillers/Murders I usually like, Victoria has stolen my listening heart. A good listen for anyone who likes some local lore mixed with mayhem.

Passed the time

I was hoping to really like these characters since I love to find a series I enjoy. It was OK, but it doesn't make me want to read or listen to more of these.

Ideallistic view of a small community

I love women sleuths, especially older ones, and I adore Davina Porter as reader.

In this book, the first I read, but not the first in this series, the protagonist didn't strike me as extraordinary so much as the police chief as rather not extraordinary. But I liked the writing style and the descriptions of the land and the weather.

It will not give your brain a big work-out but rather transport you elsewhere for a couple of hours.

I'll definitely try another book of this series, although right now I am not sure I'll commit to reading all of them.

Bleak, pedantic but...love Elizabeth George

I've been conflicted on this one. I love Elizabeth George's Thomas Lynley mysteries, have never listened to one, but have read them all. I'd been reluctant to read this one based on the jacket material, so opted to listen as an option.

If you're an Elizabeth George fan, this one is problematic because those characters we know and love and have followed for years make an appearance only in the last few pages of the book, though the dramatic foreshadowing prepares you exactly for what is going to happen.

George is just too heavy-handed with this one. Too unremittingly bleak, and also too didactic. Again and again we hear various characters talking about problems with "the youth of today." They harp on the desire for a rush of sudden fame, bad work ethic -- and the harping is not worked in elegantly, it becomes stulfyingly, speechifyingly overwrought.

This book is, perhaps, so much more slender than the typical George book because she tells and tells and tells vs. showing.

All that being said, I still give this three stars because she does create plot tension, not an easy thing to do given that the book opens with telling us that the "she" in question, Lynley's wife Helen, is going to be shot (so not giving away any surprises here). And the characters are compelling. But its hard to wallow in this world, as brief as the sojourn is, and no one likes to listen to lectures, especially when they're as ill-disguised as these are. At end, if you love George, read it or listen to it; if you haven't read George, don't start with this one. Start with any of her other Lynley mysteries, this one is a trifling by comparison.

What is the point

I have always enjoyed Elizabeth George books so I kept listening, thinking it would get better. It did not. The whole story is about siblings who are deserted by their mother and left on their aunts doorstep. The aunt was not equipped to handle the problems of teenage sex, drugs and gangs. The book had no redeeming qualities. I can get this kind of drama on the nightly news.

Disappointing

If you like stories about gangs and bullies.. this is for you.

Light Entertainment

Rich characters but weak plot; entertaining in any case. It is a refreshing change from the usual.

What Just Happened?

As you may already know, I like to read books set in places Ive visited so I was looking forward to this adventure in Copenhagen.

It fell flat for me. What was it? Comedy? Slapstick? A Danish Caper? Thriller-Mystery? I didnt really get it.

Certain segments were entertaining enough, and some parts did make me laugh, I must admit but were they supposed to?

Overall, it barely rates above a meh.

The narrator was nice but fast. This was a good light listen - one you don't have to concentrate on too closely. Good happily-ever-after ending. Kinda formula for Ms. Peters, but always pleasant.

Farce humorous novel by Elizabeth Peters, best for long standing fans

I am writing this review in response to two of the other written reviews.

This non-series mystery and romantic caper by ELizabeth Peters is a madcap/screwball comedy which apparently (reading the other written reviews) is trying to a listener who is not a long standing fan of Peters and her other pseudonym, Barbara Michaels. Although this is not one of my top favorites among Peters/Michaels many works, I still enjoyed it very much (4 stars). The heroine, Elizabeth, is thrown in with the Rosenbergs, mother (Margaret) and son (Christian, who is the grumpy hero). Only Margaret, who goes on the lam, knows what the heck is going on, but Christian and Elizabeth muddle through with repeated clumsy mishaps when confronting the criminals. This is definitely one of the more confusing novels by Peters so I recommend it for listening by long standing fans and not for readers/listeners who are new to Peters. Lastly, this novel is not a travelogue for Copenhagen but does contain some Scandinavian history and archeology.

For listeners who are new to Peters, I recommend trying one of her other, more sedate novels or one of her series. See the bibliography in the Wikipedia entry for Elizabeth Peters.

Recommended for people who like madcap plays like Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" or Brandon Thomas's "Charley's Aunt" or madcap movies like "Bringing Up Baby" (Katherine Hepburn and Carey Grant). These are three of my favorites for light hearted screwball entertainment containing much confusion.

(I found the narration too loud and had to turn down the volume from my usual comfort level; odd considering I am slightly deaf.)

Do not go by the rating

I do not know who the other person was that rated this book, but that person could not have listened. This is the a great Burke book, and I have read them all. It is my favorite formula in mysteries, a search for answers in the past , a clue a little at a time etc. Maybe it is that I am from the area that it is so believeable to be. Ok, so Burke is a little raw for some. Not for me. And Will Patton has always been one of my favorite readers.

Beware of abridgements

I listened to this wonderful book in what turns out to have been an abridgement. I guess Audible's policy is to say 'unabridged' when an item is that, but not to say 'abridged' when the item is that. The abridger did as good a job, probably, as could be done. But the tight plot and carefully character detailing was lost, at least rendering the ending puzzling.

I love James Lee Burke novels

I loved Crusaders Cross! I have listened to every novel by JLB and love the way he writes. His description of the countryside or a storm coming up, you feel you are there. He could write about sh-- and I would love it. I especially love Clete Purcel, he is wonderful no matter what. I don't care who reads to book to me.

Changing narrator drops my review

from 5 to 3 (maybe 2 & a half). I'm sorry, Will Patton is not a bad narrator, but he is NOT Robicheaux. Mark Hammer's reading sounds just like a friend of mine who grew up in Lousiana. I had a hard time getting involved in this one. Bad idea to change so late in the series.

I just couldn't listen to this narrator. He is a fine reader, but once you have heard Mark Hammer, no one else can ever be Dave. Sorry. I tried, but I just couldn't.

Characters Moving On

I enjoyed the monastic background for this mystery and also the fact that the main characters are moving on in their lives. I also enjoy how Rita Mae Brown's books are always strongly rooted in the weather and in the Virginia landscape.

I do get a bit tired of the mystery resolution for the Mrs. Murphy series though. At the current rate of depletion there shouldn't be anybody left in Crozet. We need a change of pace here, Rita Mae!

Loved All The Closeness Of The Women

Kept me guessing until the end, who murdered who? All the different ages of the ladies and everyone learning life messages from each other. Of course the animals Corgis, kittens and cats where the stars!.

Too many characters causes obliqueness.

This is my first Rita Mae Brown book; I purchased this book after reading a great many positive reviews of Ms. Brown's work. I also listened to the sample offered from this website. Unfortunately, my listening experience of the whole book has been, at best, scrambled. This story contains so many characters that I found it hard to isolate the main theme of the story. I am not sure if there is a theme to this story. Although there were murders, I am unable to find any relevance in the story for the murders. I think the motivation for the murders is distorted by the extreme lack of developed characters. I accept that the Mrs. Murphy character is an intrinsic part of the story. But, the vagueness in the personalities of the other characters in the story adds no true foundation to the "mystery" that is being played out. The ending does not justify the means. Ms. Brown's desire to insinuate the reason for the murders at the end of the story does not justify her obliqueness during the story.

I enjoy a good mystery! I enjoy a good story! I enjoy having a lot of interaction between the main characters of a story when I am listening to them on my way to & from work. I did not find this story enjoyable to listen too.

Mrs. Murphy, Pewter, and T. Tucker rock!

I loved this book-- but then I love all the books written by Sneaky Pie Brown! The residents of Crozet are delightful and one feels attached to certain characters right away while others take a little more time to develop. Harry, as always, is a font of curiosity. Her independent nature is softened by her reluctant vulnerability. My favorite part of the book, of course, involves the furry stars and their close brush with the bobcat. Mrs. Murphy's clever interaction with the young fox plays in nicely!

Underwhelming and kind of insulting.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

In short: no. Sadly, while I've very much enjoyed the Mrs Murphy series up until this point, this book rubbed me the wrong way.

What was most disappointing about Rita Mae Browns story?

The most I can say without getting too spoilery is that the incredible amount of victim blaming in this book left me with a bitter taste in my mouth.

Where's the mystery?

If you like foxhunting, hounds, foxes, lyrical descriptions, dialogue between animals and learning about how a fox hunt operates from the viewpoint of all (and I mean ALL) the participants, this book is for you. If you are looking for a good mystery, forget this one. About halfway through, about the only thing mysterious that had happened was a couple of deaths (by hemlock!) of people we hadn't even met, and even the main character was only mildly interested in what happened to them at that point. The ultimate trap for the villain was pretty exciting, though. Also, the author narrated this one -- always a mistake, I think. She was a bit mechanical. Barbara Rosenblat or another professional could have livened this one up considerably.

Writer Narrator

Rita Mae Brown should stick to writing and go back to paying a professional to bring her books to life. I'll never purchase another of her books if she continues to read them. Many writers think they can better tell their story and I haven't found any of them that can do justice to their books like the professional can.

This was a first!

Not only was the author's "narration" of this vaguely interesting story dull, she actually stops, goes back and corrects herself, mid-sentence, several times. She also becomes slow and halting, even within dialogue, when the wording becomes difficult. It was all very distracting and I stopped listening after a few hours.

UGH!

It was hard for me to give even 1 star. I loved all the other Rita Mae Brown books but this is the first I wanted to get my point back. Sorry Rita I cannot even stand her voice. Keep writing the Mrs. Murphy ones, please.

Just totally boring

It might have been better if someone else had read the book, but I doubt it. It also seems that like 3/4 of the way through the book, the author decides that "Oh, I have a mystery here, so I'd better wrap this up!" I'd pass on this one.
