Maybe I just don't like abridged

I liked this story, but it seemed a little bland. Perhaps I don;t like abridged stories. I have not read other fairstein, so I shall have to compare. It was an interesting enough story, but it seemed to lack tension. I tend to try to buy unabridged, because I figure if the story can be cut without damage, then maybe it is not as good as it could be.

Cold Hit

While the story is classic Fairstein, I just had a hard time with the Reader. Allison Janney has a voice that just makes this book difficult to listen to.

Bad Narrator

The narrator was horrible. She read so fast that it made it not enjoyable to listen to. There were times I think she just ignored punctuation altogether. It sounded monotone.

Her monotone is sleep inducing. She's sooooo boring.

Grateful this was abridged so I didn't have to listen to Janney very long. I will never listen to any book she narrates. Absolutely no personality added to any of the characters.

Enjoyable!

I purchased this because I love the books this author writes as Lorelei James, and I am glad I gave it a try as it is nothing like the others books I've read. The story wasn't very fast but it fit perfectly with the slow paced country life the characters live. Mercy Gunderson is a little rough around the edges but I liked that about her. Jennifer Van Dyck did a great job narrating. I will be purchasing the next book in this series.

No Mercy

This is my first Lori Armstrong book. Jennifer Van Dyck did a good job narrating the story. Mercy is a army women sniper who was wounded and has returned home on leave due to her Father's death. Her nephew is murdered and the family look to her for help as their Father was the local sheriff before his death. Was a fast paced story set in South Dakota ranch country next to the Indian Rez. Lots of general information about the site of the story. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Too many details get in the way.

Too many details describing every single detail of surroundings. Almost to the point that you forget what the real story is.

This narrator's sort of "breathless" reading style wears thin real fast. I found it to be unlistenable after only one chapter.

There are several books in this series, which is terrific - I would be open to listening again, as long as someone else is narrating.

Wish I hadn't.....

I don't remember what genre this book was listed in, but it should be under romance because the majority of the writing is about the love interests. Very little attention was given to developing a good mystery. The characters were one dimensional and predictable, the plot line not at all suspenseful. I could not wait for it to end and considered abandoning it numerous times.

The best of the Shane Scully series

This is the kind of writing that got me into this series. The past 2 or 3 books have tended to the preposterous, but this one very good. It is sad that this maybe the last of the books because of Cannell's very sad passing, although I hear there may be one more in the pipeline.

Top Quality Writing!

Great characterizations! Slightly hard-to-believe plot, but involves two sets of multiple murders decades apart, related only by real estate! Fun for Shane Scully fans!

Bittersweet, But a Great Listen!

Since the passing this year of author Stephen Cannell, unless there were more manuscripts, will miss his wonderful way with the 'police case' mystery.....great characters, humor and action.

Scott Brick as the narrator was 'spot on' and very easy to listen and enjoy over and over....as is what will have to happen. Will have to go back and listen to the rest of the 'Shane Skully' series...but from this one, they work well as a stand alone story as well, and the narration really adds to the story.

EXCELLENT BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!

i was hooked on the story from day one. The reader did an excellent . I could picture everything he said.

A final gem from Stephen Cannell

When I heard of Mr. Cannell's passing, I was truly sad that I wouldn't be able to enjoy any more Shane Scully novels. I was pleasantly surprised when The Prostitute's Ball was released. It was another exciting novel with an excellent narrator.

A joy to the ears!

Simon Vance is one of the best narrators I have ever heard; and he IS Charlie. Each and every one of Chris Ewan's books has been intelligent, humorous, a good mystery, and a delightful romp. My only disappointment is that they are all so short! However, I will gladly spend a credit on whatever he writes. Few mystery writers can captivate in so many ways--he does it all.

Honor among thieves, with humor

Charlie is a good thief but a bad experience in Vegas has sent him to Venice to write his detective stories. He's promised his agent, Victoria, to stay on the straight and narrow. Then he gets a visit by a beautiful burglar who has taken his first edition MALTESE FALCON. To get his book back, she sends him on a strange mission. Then all the troubles really begin.

The book is just plain fun to read. The writing is excellent, with the best descriptions of people, places and things that I've read in a while. The mystery intrigues with humor galore. This is the first one I've read in this series, though it is the fourth book. Will go back and read them all now. Listened to this in Audible, which added a lot to my enjoyment.

Sharon McCone Mysteries are quite good

This book was well plotted and held interest well. The characters in this series continue from book to book and continue to develop. The book is enjoyable and has a satisfying conclusion.

I liked it, so I thought I would get the ...

I read this book on paper many years ago. I liked it, so I thought I would get the Kindle version. I try to read the "free" books, but this is one I really wanted, so I paid for it.

The Kindle version has too many mistakes!! many small words left out; some mistakes make the words into different words; too many little errors - just about every page!

I am wondering who actually types these hard copy books into ebooks. BE MORE CAREFUL - READ WHAT YOU ARE TYPING!! I am very disappointed in this version. It's a very good book, but is very frustrating to read!

She does it again

This story is about those difficult times of the 50s when Communism was the big bad wolf and people's lives could be ruined just by the hint they were involved. A well told tale.

Sloppy

Could somebody please proofread these scanned books before they're published? I spent money on this and don't appreciate reading things like "form" instead of"from" a couple of times a page.

And jambalaya is a rice dish, not eaten with a spoon .Might Sharon and Adah have been eating gumbo at Twylla' s?

This one has an involved plot about the bloody 1956 murder of a society girl. Funny and entertaining

This was a fun lighthearted book that makes it delightful to read. Mercy is a nurse who is being enticed into participating in the family business of private investigator. While she is unwittingly cutting teeth in the investigation business, she is being hassled with being a look-a-like Marilyn Moore and having her pictures plaster on youtube.

She is surrounded with an amusing group of people, her ex-police father, her mother, from whom she inherited her Marilyn looks, two funny god mothers, and a host of others. The mystery is interesting, but remember this is a comedy first. Many of the reviewers did not like the references to Marilyn or how often. That was not a big deal to me. Actually, that added a comedic element; the paparazzi constantly chasing her catching her in compromising situations.

I am hooked on the series.

Laugh out loud.

laughing isn't something you expect from a murder. it is a really good story and the narration was good, you could tell who the different people were, and I couldn't tell who did it until the very last.

Not for me

I'm glad I bought this book for 1.99 after getting the Kindle version for free. The lead character, Mercy Watts, is annoying and unlikeable. She is related to everyone involved. Mercy also has issues because she looks like Marilyn Monroe. This is a very important point in the book because it is mentioned every three pages. Although it annoys her to look like Marilyn, she doesn't seem to mind using this to her advantage. Then, she complains about it. Like I said, not for me.

Amazing Potential Lost

I would give the main character, Mercy Watts, a backbone!

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Having a beautiful, smart protagonist who happens to look like Marilyn Monroe would have been more interesting, if she hadn't let so many men in the book push her around! Mercy's inability to stand up for herself when faced with her father's friends, her cousin, etc. was so disappointing, and really unnecessary. Why waste so much intelligence on someone so easily pushed around?

Couldn't put it down

FBI Special Agent Aloysius Pendergast, (yes, we finally find out his first name) is a wealthy, southern gentleman, with a taste for the bizarre and supernatural. (Well, with his family, I guess he comes to it naturally!)

Pendergast's methods and manners are eccentric, and mysterious; but in this case, he is up against the devil -- and having a devil of a time.

This murder investigation involves many things, including priceless artifacts and bombs; and there are lots of twists and turns.

I have listened to the other two books by Preston and Child available on audible (The Cabinent of Curiosities and Still Life with Crows) and got this one as soon as I saw it. It was very good -- the ending leaves you hanging and waiting for more. Oh well. You do not have to read the others to enjoy this book. A nice romp if you like murder mysteries with a dash of the paranormal.

Audible needs to get the rest of the collaborations between these two authors -- Relic and Reliquary.

Great book

The story is excellent, the narrator is excellent--no other reader seems to capture the characters as well. Like most of the books by this author, you need to be a thinking reader/listener--and sometimes you need to forget to be...but overall, an excellent listen.

Brimstone

Pendergast is great. I listened to "Still life with crows", and "The cabinet of curiosities". I love Special Agent Pendergast. Brimstone is amazing and fast paced with interesting characters. Maybe not totally believable.......But so what!

A great read, if you've read the rest

Like every Preston/Childs book I've read, this is a great, fun-to-listen to book. The Pendergast character becomes more and more interesting with every installment, and it's fun to encounter chanracters from past books in a cohesive way. However, if you are new to the series you will want to start with the earlier books and read your way up - read Cabinet of Curiosities and Murder of Crows (available at Audible), and maybe also Relic and Reliquary (I don't think these are available at Audible - check the library). The story works much better if you are familiar with the cast.

Pretty good read...

I have read several Preston/Child books and this one, like the others I have read, is certainly enjoyable. The storyline was interesting but I did figure out the "twist" about 2/3 through.

AMISH MURDER SHE HAD SECRETS

AMISH MURDER by Samantha Price. book 2 in the "Ettie Smith Mystery"

Having enjoyed Samantha's stories, was delighted to read and review this series. The highlight of this audio, was a great Amish murder, the bonus was the voice of Heather Henderson. To me, she added so much life to the characters. Two older sisters together, and the young girl who was murdered, never got along with her brother. She was at odds having a stepmother, and all the lying, did this cause her murder. For secrets among secrets were part of her. You could feel the humbleness of the detective asking for help. The Amish do tend to keep to themselves, but Ettie has away about her, to get people to talk. That what the detective needed.

This was a good plot, characters rich in description, and readers will enjoy this book. With it now in audio also, was a delight to listen to.

Looking forward to book 3. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.

Language!

Being a little old lady, sometimes bad language does deter me. Let us say that if the F and C words were omitted from the writer's vocabulary the book would be a hood hour and a half shorter (probably no bad thing). The novel definitely demonstrates the corrupt seedy side of Australia - bogan to the core (most Aussies I know don't talk like that). The narrator did a good job though. This was my second Peter Temple, don't think my ears could cope with any more.

Classic Jack Irish Thriller

This is the fourth of the Jack Irish thrillers. Set in Melbourne, Peter Temple paints a picture of the city and it's characters. The dialogue is carefully rationed, with no unnecessary padding or self serving descriptive white noise.

This is a carefully thought out thriller and a fantastic listen. Highly recommended.

All 4 novels of the Jack Irish stories have won this award either as shared 'best novel' or 'best novel'.. His later novels 'Truth' and 'Broken Shore' went on to win the highly coveted Miles Franklin Award (and other awards too).

One has to smile at the escape from a fate almost as bad it comes,. to go on to the 'other games' at the track with a rescued killer racehorse. Well Jack Irish is a hero after all, and this is fiction, He may be bruised and badly shaken and still possess all too human foibles and peccadillos and it is these that bring him back.to being an almost normal bloke.

If you have not met Jack before I would suggest listening to the earlier stories in this series because many of the notable characters are introduced and fleshed out there. The ongoing stories include Jack's friends, contacts, neighnours and mates who are in his life. It is with these friends that much of the funny repartee is expressed.

Without knowing the characters it would be too easy to get lost with the names or their relevance to the story.. Some are incidental to the major plot, while others are more involved.
