Trouble seems to find Sydney no matter where in the world she goes. She can't stand by and not do anything. This time it brings her back home stateside. When a close family friend gets caught up in some kind of scheme, Sydney is determined to do whatever it takes to save him and clear his name.

This series just keeps getting better and better. I didn't want to put it down and actually found myself somewhat antsy because I wanted to get back to the book and keep turning that page to find out what was gonna happen next. Can't wait to see what Sydney goes up against next.

Scary

Sydney is back again. This time Hugh, her brother's significant other, is being charged with murder. Supposedly, he murdered his business partner. In addition, her friends want to create an organization named Joyful Justice, a vigilante group. Things get really scary when Sydney decides to go it alone (again).

A fast paced, riveting story with plenty of surprises.

A page turner even if you want to look away at times

I have become a huge Emily Kimelman fan and look forward to her next Sydney Rye installment. As I have written in other reviews of books in this series, the heroine is tough and fragile, committed and conflicted, shaped by her own basic character and horrific experiences, always teetering on the edge of being the worst version of herself while she battles injustice for the best reasons. She seeks love but cannot allow it, wants challenge and at the same time wants to flee from it, can't decide who she is or who she can be, and seems destined to float along to wherever the rip tides take her while pining for a rest she cannot tolerate for long. I like that her adventures take Sidney to exotic locales and give us a glimpse into the underbelly of those places we would never see otherwise, but I pull back in horror when she does. This one in particular was hard to read in some places and I wanted to put it aside and not look at the terrible things human beings can do to one another. But there was really no place in the plot to take a breath of fresh air before plunging in again. Fast paced, mostly unpredictable and gripping. A real page turner. Besides, how could you not love a strong woman warrior with such a great canine companion. The dog Blue is a stroke of genius on the part of the author. Looking forward to the next volume in this series.

Devil's Breath

Once again, another glued to the edge of my seat story about Sydney Rye. She travels all over the globe and finds trouble where ever she goes, so far she has managed to always escape, but not always unharmed. I would be grateful to have her watching my back. On to #6!

Excellent 3 hour suspense mystery novella!

I was introduced to audio books by John C. Dalglish recently and am now using his 16 novel Detective Jason Strong series as time fillers between longer novels. My listening to the 16 book series is in random order. This is my 4th review of books in the series during recent weeks. All that I have listened to so far are very well written, well narrated, suspenseful, and fast paced. The series is set in San Antonio and deals with SAPD cases. One of Their Own is about the case of a bad cop who is responsible for two murders. Dalglish is a very talented self published author of "clean mysteries". My tolerance for bad language and sex scenes is very high, but Dalglish amply demonstrates that outstanding books can be written without either.

Yes...in the sense that I can listen on the go.

Which character as performed by James Killavey was your favorite?

All of them. I think he is the best of the narrators for this series so far. Glad the author is keeping him. However some don't like him ... and in these politicized days have to go to extremes. "Horrible. The worse. Sad." Sigh.

Another Horrible Narrator

This reads as a pretty good mystery with a solid story and no huge holes in the narrative. Then there is the man they picked to narrate this novella. His stumbling staccato delivery is a boon to the dentists of all of us who sat through his performance. To further this lack of coherence between book and reader, while the setting is San Antonio Mr. Killavey has a wicked thick Boston accent. This story was good enough that I manged to listen through to the end but it was due to my loyalty to an excellent story by John Dalglish. I may give another book in the series with a different reader a shot.

Could have done without the narrator change!

This installment of Detective Jason Strong was pretty emotional. Det. Strong has a pregnant wife ready to pop at any moment, and is having to look for his missing colleague Nina. Jason's close friend and fellow officer Nina goes missing and when he and his partner Vanessa start investigating her disappearance they discover some pretty cruel and unbelievable information.

Nina was only in a few books up until this point, and not a well known character for me.

Incredibly fun and unpredictable!

Sarianna Gregg really brought Lindsey and the other characters of Death by Chocolate to life and this is a book I could listen to again!

What other book might you compare Death by Chocolate to and why?

Lindsey reminds me of the early Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich...before she became old and stale. She is fun and impulsive, if not a little too nosy for her own good. I loved the early SP series, and I think I have found a new guilty pleasure in Lindsey and Sally Berneathy!

She has so much passion and energy, she made a fun to read book even more fun to listen to.

What fun characters and a plot full of twists and turns! Just when I thought I knew what to expect Sally Berneathy threw me another curveball! As someone with an hour each way commute, I love to listen to audiobooks to pass the time, and this one made my drive pass by in a flash! I can't wait for the next book to come out as an audiobook! What a great find!

One of my favorite authors - I can hardly wait for the next in the series. I love mysteries that make me laugh and this series does that. I didn't care for the reader at first but I love the book so much I kept listening and by the end of the book she had grown on me. She is able to do different voices to distinguish between characters and that is important to me. If you don't like the reader just keep listening but if you can't get used to her just read the book - you won't be sorry.

What is not to love?

Phoe is at it again. In The Spear of Destiny, we learn a little bit more about Phoe and her family. She is hired by Simon to find her brother, Eric. Eric left to find the Spear of Destiny. Phoe has had no contact with Eric since he left and has no idea where he is. Phoe has a very contentious relationship, at best, with her mother. Her mother who is ex CIA.

Phoe once again steps up to the plate. The two goons her mom hired to help her discourage Phoe instead try to kidnap her. She find Eric only to have to fight off those trying to collect a debt from him. Simon is shot..... a comedy of events that has the reader chuckling.

With the use of detective skills, Phoe realizes that the postcard her mother said had been from Eric, was really from someone who wanted the Spear of Destiny and needed her to find it. Using logic, Phoe goes to a Jewish store in Portland and buys the items listed on the postcard... that leads the Jewish Rabbi to take her to a locked room. It is here that she learns more about where the Spear of Destiny is.

Phoe beats her mother at her own game, helps out Eric, finds the shaft of the spear and doesn't tell Simon that she also knows where the head of the spear is. Could that become another adventure? Is Phoe right and it should remain hidden.

Love the history and the comedy in this book. Excellent read.

A quick read

The story is entertaining; the characters are appealing; the writing is clear. Everything could be fleshed out into a more lengthy novel, tying loose ends into a cohesive bundle. All of the information is there, but I give it for of five because of the unfinished bits left dangling throughout the tale. Perhaps they will become parts of future spirits?

Fast read

This is the next book in the "phoe" stories. It is sort of a continuation, but can be read without having read the first book(new characters, little reference to old characters or other story). This is a fast read, adventure story; think Indiana Jones type story.

Where was the editor?

The heroine is supposed to be a profiler for the FBI. She has no skills, breaks the law, messes up the investigations, has frequent emotional breakdowns, and she is an insult to women. There are numerous police officers, firemen, undercover agents, etc that are women who are able to perform at the same expertise as their male counterparts. This woman behaves like she really has permanent PMS. I am a woman who worked with domestic violence and child abuse and mental health issues. The supposed profiling shows the author knows very little about people and behavioral sciences. I did not know this was a Harlequin Romance Novel or I would not have read it.

Great story!

I was sure I had the plot all figured out. I was very wrong! A truly great story!

by the formula

this book follows the formula to a T, and is entirely predictable from start to finish. Plus the lifetime non stop anguishing. over the loss of a childhood friend is sooo overdone, that it's annoying and tiresome. Personally, I dislike stories that portray women characters as rash and incompetent, and always needing their lover to come to the rescue. Once is bad enough, but 3 times is insulting and over done. This "heroine" is not only defined a weak, but also a not to bright screwup Shame on you Elizabeth Heiter. However, it does take up your airport layover time, and you won't need to worry about distractions causing you to miss anything. either, because you'll be miles ahead of this yarn. Yawn.

Enjoyable, good listen

Small quibbles about Evelyn continuing to go into dangerous situations without backup, etc. but premise was unique enough to hold my interest. The veteran local cop was rather heavy handed, but he had a reason for the obvious chip on his shoulder trying to live up to his father's history. Likable partner and boyfriend, not the same men. Boss was a caricature but played minor role.

I liked the narrator. I'm not sure why but I could only listen at 1.25 speed rather than my usual 1.5 speed. Not a complaint, just an observation.

Have already bought the next book and look forward to getting to it in the future.

Too Narsasistic

I regret to say that many recent " who dunits ", are primarily about personal failing s of the lead character - this is no exception to this theme.

Characters grow on you

Second book by this author and I am liking the characters. The story in both books goes back and forth between present and past. Because the Swedish names are a little unfamiliar to me it is sometimes hard to keep track of the story. Still enjoyed the book.

Interesting Idea

Read all these great things about this book - Oprah even said this author was a must read. I found this one pretty boring. Not horrible, just not very interesting. My mystery standards are high and this just didn't measure up. So many better books, so little time.....

MORE Asa Larsson, Audible!!!

The only bad aspect of this book is that it ended, and what's worse is that there's only one other Asa Larsson book in the Audible collection. I'll have to resort to reading them on my Kindle, and I'll miss hearing the story as performed by Gabrielle Glaister. I hope Hillary Huber does as well making the characters come alive, but it will be odd listening to an American accent.

This isn't a review in the true sense of the word, but I know other readers have described the story. If you like rooting for the good guys and booing the scoundrels; if you're more attracted to how a story unfolds than you are to being kept guessing till the end; and if you're glad to meet a woman detective who uses intuition and solid thinking in equal measure, then you'll very much enjoy this book!

Narration doesn't do this one any favors

Just after I started listening to this book, a copy of the printed text fell into my lap quite by chance, so I read them together; first, I would listen to a chapter, and then I would read the same chapter. It was a very revealing experiment. Christopher Fowler's writing is full of humorous nuance, NONE of which comes across as narrated by Tim Goodman. His delivery is bombastic, his characterization is weak and he drags out the pronounciation of some words, making him sound like he is speaking with his mouth full. Large sections of the story slipped past me as I listened, only to be appreciated when I read the text. All in all, I enjoyed Fowler's work very much and will definitely get more of it - but just as definitely I will be reading, and not listening. At least not to Tim Goodman.

Marlevous historical fiction

The narrator allowed me to feel part of this mystery - not only a listener. The mystery is so intriguing that I had no hope of solving it myself. I'm Bryant's age so I easily identify with his techniques, emotions, and limitations.

Another Great Fowler Mystery

Highly recommend this series!!! Must read. series for mystery lovers. Bryant and May are interesting characters in this series, but Arthur Bryant keeps me in stitches. He's a character unlike any other in the literary world.

One of a master's best.

A great story. With some of Hall's most thoughtful writing about his best heroic characters. Couldn't put it down. Read it!

Hall: Great Story-teller

I've never read anything by Hall that I didn't love, so I'm biased. This book ranks up at the top. I love the story itself, of course. Reading it has kept me up late at night, because I simply couldn't put it down. Secondly, I like the geographical settings and their descriptions and relate to them, living in both South Florida and North Carolina. And I like Hall's pro-environmentalism.

Delicious holiday treat!

A short short story perfect for when you want to whet your appetite but can't handle a full course. Delist!

Expensive, short.

30 minute short story yet kind of necessity to the story line. Still costs half the price of a regular ~7hr audiobook. Much too expensive for what it is, should only be a few dollars or else free on the end of Alibi in High Heels which is the book before. Basically shouldn't have been a separate book and i highly doubt it was in printed publication.
