Publisher's Summary:
Long Tail, Short Tail tackles the topic of adoption. This audiobook acknowledges the wide range of feelings that nearly every adoptee will experience at some point in their lives. Long Tail, Short Tail can help your child explore these emotions in a healthy way. This audiobook also answers questions as to why an adopted child may not look like his or her adoptive parents. Great for all adoptions including interracial.

Very sweet book!
This is a nice to the point book to introduce the adoption concept. I have accummulated a few adoption books for kids, but each of them has some pages that just don't expain our situation right. My son is hispanic and my husband and I are white...so this book is a nice way to introduce adoption...since, like this book, my son's birthmom loved him and wanted him to have everything he needed---a mom and a dad who could provide a "safe home, warm milk, and soft boots." No where does it mention his parents being sad or crying because they couldn't have a baby, or the long bumpy road taken to adopt (since a child does not need to know these things). I like that the book is all about the baby and how the birthmom just wanted the best for her baby :)
Great book regarding interracial adoption
The illustration is done in watercolor, which in my opinion kind of makes it feel a little more endearing. As an adoptive father of an interracial family, I appreciate being able to read my kid a book about a little chipmunk that was adopted by a pair of squirrels (obviously a metaphor for a child of one race being adopted by parents of another). Until now, I hadn't found much in the way of children's books regarding interracial adoption, except those talking about overseas adoptions. I recommend this story for adoptive families of any background.
A moving story about love and acceptance
Long Tail, Short Tail by Rachael Snead and illustrated by Laurie Barrows is a fantastic children's book. Ollie is a chipmunk who is adopted by squirrel parents. The important messages this book relays to our youngest readers and/or listeners is that adoptive children and step children are loved every bit as much as biological children making a complete family unit, and it's OK for a child to be racially different than their parents. The racial message goes beyond the family, and enters acceptance within society.
Rachael is able to send a powerful message written in a context young children can understand using chipmunks and squirrels as characters. Laurie does an excellent job portraying the message of the book within the pictures. Any great children's book needs strong illustrations to back up the plot in order for the youngest audience to fully understand. Together Rachael and Laurie have truly created a moving story about love and acceptance.
Long Tail, Short Tail is an excellent story that I recommend not only for adopted children but for all youngsters. Many of today's families are not traditional or should I say the knew idea of traditional is changing. This story goes a long way in explaining that concept to children.
Lovely and thoughtful
What a beautiful little book that explains what is a touchy subject for many in a considerate and accessible way. Having come from a family with two adopted siblings and a number of foster brothers and sisters I know the 'why am I here' questions are things that are constantly going to spring up for an adopted child.
