A book with a positive message about bullying written for kids (and adults too) by a kid!
Emily is the new girl at school. She learns quickly that her first day at a new school isn't going to go the way she expected. She gets teased about her appearance among other things. At first, Emily thinks that there is something wrong with her, and wonders if there is something she can fix about herself to get the other kids to stop teasing. She soon learns that the problem isn't her, it's them. Together with some new friends that she initially overlooks due to her worries, they bring about change at their school with confidence, communication and teamwork.
This book is written by Jessica Arnold, the author of I am Good at Lots of Things and Hello My Name is Rose and this is My Christmas Story

I KNOW WHO I AM
Emily had just moved to a new neighborhood and school. On her first day, she is eager to make new friends and enjoy new experiences Things rapidly go sour. The middle school students make fun of her teeth, snatch her hat, pull her hair and make fun of her accent. Emily is sad but keeps it locked inside.
The next day she is determined to "blend in." Of course, she discovers that doesn't suit her because she is not like anyone else. Will Emily gain the courage to be herself, find like-minded students for friends, and teach others to have the confidence to stand up to bullying?
The author wrote this book at the age of twelve based on her own experiences. This book is marketed for children in grades pre-k through age fourteen. I feel that it is most suitable for children ages seven through twelve. Certainly would be a good book to use in the classroom to open up a discussion on bullying and self-esteem.
Great message for encouraging self esteem
This is an excellent book for children and young teens. The style is geared toward younger children - it is a short story with a lot of illustrations. It has a simple and easy to understand plot. But the message is as basic and as complicated as life itself. Even tweens can learn and/or be comforted from it. It basically teaches that bullying is not okay. Individuals need to not give in to bullies and not miss the fun they could be having with real friends who care about them. The illustrations are awesome! I am an adult and I wish I could draw half as well. The colors are vibrant and the background patterns are highly detailed and interesting. I didn't find one editing or grammatical error in this book, which is more than I can say about a lot of adult books. I highly recommend this book for parents of young children to read with their children, or older children to read for themselves. It may seem a bit simplistic to older children, but the message is still good and important. Congratulations to author Jessica Arnold for a well done book!
Nobody Can Take My Happy Away-- by Jessica Arnold and Patricia Arnold
Emily and her family move and Emily has to go to a new school. She was excited at first, but she soon realizes that going to a new school wouldn't be easy. Kids are mean to others that are just a tiny bit different and Emily unfortunately has to endure this behavior from others. Emily gets teased on the first day, and the teasing and bullying just goes on and on.
