Stick Dog is about a dog called Stick Dog. He is called Stick Dog because he is drawn like a stick dog instead of a stick figure. He has friends: Karen, Poo Poo, Stripes, and Mutt. Stick Dog loves food. He lives in a dry pipe under Highway 65 and sleeps on a mattress that he found near a dumpster and dragged to his pipe at night when no one could see him.

Among his friends, Stick Dog is the leader of the pack. They all defer to him when they are stumped with something. He is smart and can read. He is also kind and faithful to his friends. He understand them and treats them fairly.

I liked this book a lot. The book made me hungry because the dogs were always trying to find food, and a lot of it was about food. The author uses vegetables to describe his drawing skills. Broccoli looks like cauliflower and looks like a tree. He was right about broccoli and trees looking very much alike. His asparagus looks like french fries. It says that some people don't like vegetables, but I like them a lot. Stick Dog was funny. Some parts made me giggle and even made my father laugh. As soon as we finished it, I wanted to find the next book.

Bed storytime

My grand daughter is enamoured with the character in the book Stick Dog, he and his friends are always hungry and work out plans as to how they are going to get something to eat. My grand daughter likes the way Stick Dog is the leader in a unobtrusive way, she reads part of a book on her kindle each night before going to sleep. I have purchased all the books of Stick Dog by this author for her because she wants to know what else he is up to next. Great reading for 10 year olds.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Beginning of the Armadillos to be better than the print version?

Yes I would. I love listening to audiobooks and think this narration brings this classic story to life.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Beginning of the Armadillos?

I loved the way that Stickly-Prickly the hedgehog and Slow-and-Solid the tortoise, managed to confuse the poor young Painted Jaguar.

What does Phillip J. Mather bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?

Phillip has a wonderful voice to listen to and I think his narrations of the 'Just So' stories really compliment them.

Kids are Enchanted!

What's delightfully surprising about this book is how easily it lends itself to honest conversations with kids. Not only will it help students understand how it's more important who you are on the inside than what you look like on the outside, but it also helps young children start to develop empathy for people going through adversity. After sharing this book with my class, and engaging in discussions about the author's brave young daughter, this story became an instant favorite in our listening center. Young girls will love that it's "princessy" and includes a fairy, and boys will love that it's based on truth and not your typical "princess" story. They thought it was really cool that the princess was bald and sported the look so bravely! So glad I have this story to share year after year with my students. If you teach and incorporate a fairy tale unit with your studies, this needs to be included with your read-alouds!

Best book for kids

When my daughters teacher lost her hair due to chemo. This was a great book to let the kids know that beauty was on the inside. I feel this book helped the kids understand that no matter what she will be the same teacher they love. The illustrations are amazing and full of bright colors. My daughter loves the story behind the book and shares it with anyone going through a hard time. I even think adults would benefit reading it.

This books shows that true beauty comes from inside, through the strength and courage of fighting cancer. It not only shows a lesson of love and encouragement through a child's eyes but will inspire adults as well to stay upbeat and faithful in their fight.
