Fostering Understanding
"Why Wonât He Look at Me?"
On her first day at the new babysitterâs, Laura feels a little nervous. However, she quickly makes friends with a boy named Troy. She also tries to make friends with Koby but struggles to understand his different behavior. The babysitter explains that Koby has autism.
In "Why Wonât He Look at Me?" Brandie Wiley has written a simple, yet compelling, story to help both children and adults understand the challenges of autism, including the unique ways autistic individuals interact with the world and process sensory information.
Ms. Wileyâa renowned writer, teacher, and mother of three children diagnosed with autismâis a tireless advocate for the special needs of her children and of all those with autism. It is her fervent hope that understanding more about autism will minimize the bullying those diagnosed with this neurodevelopmental disorder too often endure.
Reading and sharing "Why Wonât He Look at Me?" is a significant step toward gaining that understanding. I highly recommend this book!
Very insightful!
This is a great book for kids and adults struggling to understand the differences that come with autism. I admit some bias because I know the author, but I purchased a copy for a friend with an autistic son and she loved it too! It's relate-able and and I recommend it for any young child trying to figure out how to get along with someone with autism. And since it's so prevalent in our society and schools, that could be everyone.
Five Stars
It is very descriptive in a way that a child would understand.
Adorable And Well-Written
This book explains many things about autism in a simple, matter-of-fact manner. The illustrations are very well-drawn and add a lot to the story.
A Great Way to Introduce Your Children to Autism!
This is my Facebook friend's book, written back in 2013. Brandie Wiley is an amazing woman- I met through Facebook Pages. Her heart's bigger than most and she carries an unequivocal love that inspires!
Her book, Why Won't He Look At Me was written to show children of all ages and color autism is really about. Written with her own children as characters, she places them in a fictional setting that helps to teach others about autism for understanding. In the tale, Laura is new to Ms Donna's babysitting group. There she meets other children-one in particular who won't speak or even look at her when she offers her friendship. From there the story begins.
Because I homeschool, we're always learning about things that make people different, especially since my son's biracial. Even though he may never meet a child with autism, blindness or physical limitations, he knows that different is originality and should be cherished. This book was a wonderful read for him and he found appreciation in Laura and Koby's story. (Brandie's children, btw!)
