Excellent Evocation of Peron's Argentina. Gunther rides again!

The brilliant interpretation we have come to expect; flawless characterisation and fluid and fluent reading. Gunther stumbles on to the truth with chaos and danger all around him. A welcome change of scene with fascist Argentina and the many Nazi war criminals in hiding there. Vintage Kerr and brilliant Jeff Harding!

Another great Bernie Gunther thriller

A Quiet Flame is skilfully done - weaving 1950's Buenos Aires with an unsolved murder from Berlin in 1932 almost seamlessly.

What appears to be a simple case turns out to be anything but; twist is piled upon twist, and Gunther unwraps layer after layer until the final shocking revelation is revealed.

And at the heart of the story once again is Bernie Gunther - this time under a new guise and living in South America - but up against old adversaries and uncovering murky secrets from the past. Once again, this is peopled with real personalities - Juan and Evita Peron, Adolf Eichmann, Joseph Mengele etc. - and blends fiction with conjecture based upon historical fact. Kerr breaths life convincingly into his characters and settings - and the history is seriously well done.

Brilliant narration again by Jeff Harding.

Note that this is the 5th in the series and should be listened to after the preceding four.

It's not a mystery...

I thought this was going to be a wonderful book. The idea of a mystery set in wine country was wonderful to me.

The book, however is a badly done romance with dull characters doing very little of interest. I listened through five painful hours praying that the totally whiny heroine would do something...ANYTHING of interest. She didn't.

I finally quit listening. This is bit of a tragedy, because the information about life on a vineyard was the only really interesting aspect of this otherwise bland bland book.

The story starts with a death and I was settling in for a good mystery. But after five mind-numbing hours of a heroine agonizing over nearly EVERYTHING...I couldn't stand it any more.

Horrible...easily the worst Audible book I have ever purchased.

Beverly Hillbillies Meet the Hunt Club Crowd

Virginians from the wine country don't sound like that. And, neither does anyone else in America! The reader's fake Virgina drawl sounded something like Deputy Dawg's little cartoon pal "Muskey". Her male voices sounded like a little girl mimicking her daddy. The real mystery here is why on earth, the publisher used this reader. The book wasn't so hot to start with but that reader killed off any possible enjoyment.

I can't say if the book itself is good or bad because the reader's "Southern" accent was like listening to a very irritating 6 year old girl.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I found there was a huge push on religion and not deceive work. The summary did not portray the story (if you can call it that) well.

Would you ever listen to anything by Gilbert Morris again?

Agatha Christie Plagarized

So very disappointed that the author decided that a plagiarized version of the Agatha Cristie classic was a good idea. throw in some politics and bible sermons and this is suppose to be a good idea. Sorry I am not impressed. I wish there had been a few more reviews that mentioned tis and I would never have bothered to try out the author.

The narrator was good but that only goes so far.

Gilbert Morris needs to come up with his own ideas not steal from famous authors.

The written version of this book is incredibly good - the Audible version royally sucks. It doesn't match the print version in the least. Save your money!

Great Concept

This story line has excellent potential, although I feel the author could have done a little more with the wife's perspective. Perhaps developing a more introspective psychological narrative along the lines of the movie "Sleeping With The Enemy".

The matter-of-fact writing, the lack of character development and the over-developed histrionics of the narrator rendered my rating a three out of five. I simply became tired of listening to her constant sobbing, as I am a reader/listener who prefers a more straightforward reading. I don't read hardcover books with emotion and accents, and I don't like listening to them interpreted that way.

But I must add, though that the narrator did a great job portraying the North Carolina drawl, and how bizarre it must have sounded to a woman from California.

Still an entertaining tale, however, and I would recommend it.

surprise

yep, definately thumbs up. the lady reading the book does an excellent job. she's the kind that likes to act out the character, rather than just reading the book, and maybe once or twice she went over the top. however, I have listened to many horrible female voices, trying to imitated the male characters and all that. this one is a winner.

plot: very very thrilling. there is this one concept that I think I have come across before in a novel by tess-gerittsen, which I won't mention in order not to spoil the experience. let's just say that an exquisite psychopath (if you are a psychopath-conaisseur, like me ;) is being portrayed here, one that will send chills down your spine. everything is explained with psychological detail, depth and wit. the tension never stops, partly because it's quite short (7 hours). totally put it in the bag.

Superb

I needed a good 'read' and actually paid for this instead of using my credits. I am so glad I did!

From beginning to end I felt as though I was inside the protagonist, seeing everything through her eyes and feeling her horror and vulnerability.

I especially liked the way her relationship with her little boy was portrayed.

As the story unfolded I held my breath, figuratively, through the last half of the book.

horrible accents

The book is great- as with all Iris Johansen books. Eve's voice is weak and a little too Southern and not at all what I have imagined when reading her other books. Instead of a Columbian accent, the narrator went with Dracula. Miguel sounded like a 10 year old vampire as well instead of the 19 yr old he was supposed to be. The English accent came out as Scottish. If you can look (listen)past the voices, then definitely get the audible download, Otherwise buy the book and read it as opposed to listening.
