Another Dick Francis Classic

Another Dick Francis Classic. Great with a fast moving engaging plot, a page turner,a great companion for anyone.

Another gem from Dick Francis

As with most of his novels, Dick Francis chooses a subsidiary theme in addition to that of horse racing. In this case, he chooses two: film making, and knives. Both are extraordinary - gripping and full of inside knowledge.

As usual, the central character is honest and likeable. He goes out of his way to care for the vulnerable, even though his own life is in the balance.

Dick Francis's love for, and special relationship with horses is evident as usual. His description of the filming of the wild horses at dawn is beautiful, and very moving. All in all, this is a really smashing book. Highly recommended!

As always Dick Francis writes a gripping thriller. I found it very difficult to stop listening to this as the tension built up. Tony Britton has the perfect voice to listen to and manages to change his voice for each character which adds to the enjoyment of the story.

Now I remember why I loathe abridgements

The reader is excellent and delivers with a wry sense of humor. Tannebaum's excellent story, however, is hopelessly chopped to pieces. I kept listening out of a morbid sense of courosity to see if they were going to jump from the shotgunned brother and the girl locked in the coal mine to "And they lived happily ever after." If the author had actually used those words, they probably would have as well; otherwise the last third of the book is wrapped up in about ten minutes. Nevertheless, I gave it two stars because it is an excellent Tannenbaum story and what portions are included are read with style. Please do not reward Audible by purchasing this book.

Abridged Books?

I will not waste my time. Robert Tannebaum writes good stories with plenty of humor as well as mystery. Abridging it gives you half a story.

Tedious and Boring

Did I listen to the same book these others have reviewed? The beginning is good and moves along nicely through the little league scene. Then Dan is hospitalized and launches into a long-winded and tedious recounting of his past. Finally we come back to present day, only to hear the same drawn-out story from another character. Then, two hours from the end, we go to court and hear the same dull story a third time! The story drags on until the last 30 minutes or so, then winds up with a predictable ending.

It's hard to say whether the reader aided or abetted. She might do better with better material. In this instance, her sing-song voice just added an element of lullaby to the dull, long-winded story.

Margolin Changes Genre?

I've always liked Philip Margolin. His "Gone But Not Forgotten" is a masterpiece in the "fool the reader" genre. But over the years, his work, while well written, has taken on a certain predictability. You pretty much knew where it was going from the beginning, even though the getting there was enjoyable.

"Lost Lake" is different. Margolin has entered the spy genre and he does it very well. The novel has all the requisite surprises, but the surprises are accompanied by a new boldness in prose and a humanity in his characters. I like this Margolin very much.

Excellent series for mystery lovers...

Which character as performed by Christopher Kipiniak was your favorite?

Christopher Kipiniak did a really good performance with all of the characters. His different voices made each distinguishable and easily recognizable.

Any additional comments?

I have just finished listening to the four book in this series (sure hope there are more in the wings!). Each book builds on the previous and the characters become more complex but also written in a way that I don't think it would make a whole lot of difference if they were read as stand alone or in order because histories are lightly reviewed in each. The main character Jack Keller suffers from PTSD and struggles with it but not nauseatingly so. His problem (which for the book's sake is not a problem) is that he wants to go back and relive his personal tragedy and sees it in the people he is hunting down. He really has to put forth quite a bit of self control. Compound that with a few bad cops and one good, honest and very pretty female cop and it's one surprisingly good read/listen. Each book in this series gets more complex and the characters are developed even more. I highly recommend them all.

Fun Book! Great Performance.

I like these Thriller\mystery type books. Kipiniak knocks it out of the park with a stellar performance. Keller is a great character and I am looking forward to the next 2 books.

College Conspiracy Theory

Mimicking the DaVinci Code this book is based on the life of a graduate student finishing graduate work and her thesis. The professor disappears after leaving a vague voice mail and a text to clean out the safe under his desk! She does figure out how to get into the safe and sorts the enormous amount of evidence in the safe into different categories. After that she begins reading the material along with sleuthing the library for more clues! She finds the professor, the secret society clubhouse and pieces it all together.

Wondetful read that i could not put down.

Suspense ,intrigue, and excitement on every page. This is a well written book that clears up all questions , I would recommend thus to my friends.

Find a cozy place to curl up and read this book

This is more of a detective type of story and I really liked it, but the ending wasn't quite up to what I was hoping for. Still, it was a lot of fun to read and a bit different from the fantasy, myth, and magic that I normally read. Even so, I would recommend this book to others.

Fast, moving and heart pounding!

Was a book with so many surprises. It make me feel like I was running toward the end but not sure I would get there in time. It also brought back reminders of being young again and trying to make friends you could really count on. I wasn't sure who she should trust right to the end. Read this book and take a fast fide.

Not what I expected from this author

If you aren't familiar with Anne Stuart, don't let this book be your first impression. Her skills at plotting and characterization have evolved by leaps and bounds since this early effort.

The lead characters in "Into the Fire" are fairly one-dimensional, and it's not an enjoyable dimension. They maintain an I-hate-you/I-can't-resist-you relationship that would have been credible in a pair of teenagers. With these adult characters, it might even have been intriguing as the opening salvo of a reluctant, developing romance; a typical way of building sexual tension. But 'Nate' and 'Jamie' keep the childishness going for most of the book, exchanging petulant insults as often as they fall into bed, and usually within seconds of getting out of bed.

CAUTION: SEMI-SPOILER BELOW:

As for the suspense component, I just wasn't buying it. The fear factor here is based on the implausible premise that a man living alone in a creaky old building would remain oblivious to the fact that someone else lives there too. For months.

I'll continue to read Anne Stuart, but I'll stick with her newer novels. Live and learn.

Good but not great

What would have made Into the Fire better?

First, not make rape sound like love. I get that they have been in love since they were teenagers but I think that took it too far

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I would not have had Dillon rape her as she was in high school. No means no,no matter what situation

What does Elizabeth Audley bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

I really enjoyed her as the narrator. She does a good job engaging. However, sometimes the voices were too simliar

Don't get me wrong, I loved Anne Stuart's Association books which is why I purchased this book. This was not my cup of tea.

Gripping yarn!

Wasn't quite sure where Case was going with this story at the outset, but as the story unfolded, it got more and more involving. The characters are well rounded, and the story is has enough twists and turns to keep you tracking along , but still engaged. Dragged about in parts, but wonderful narration by Dick Hill keeps you in the grasp of the story. Well worth it in my estimation.
