Simon and Patricia feel the winds of war

This is the 19th in the long running series featuring the Saint, aka Simon Templar. Charteris began writing this series about the daring adventurer and his companions in the late 1920's. This adventure, a full length novel rather than a novella or short story as is more typical for this series, is set in 1938. Europe is being shaken by the rise of Fascists in Hitler in Germany and Mussolini in Italy are familiar figures to the modern day reader, but in the period leading up to what would come to be called WWII there were many in other countries who agreed with the Fascist political agenda, and who were working quite diligently to bring about Fascist control of those governments. In 1938 it was by no means certain that other countries, France, Great Britain, or other countries would not willingly elect a Fascist government.

As Simon and Patricia Holm were driving home late one evening listening to a broadcast of a Fascist organization and discussing the threat they saw this group representing, they saw an ominous rosy glow in the distance, a country estate was on fire. When Simon and Patricia drove up the inhabitants of the house were assembling on the lawn watching in horror as the flames were engulfing the house. One person was missing from the group though, and Simon bravely entered the burning building to rescue him. He was unable to reach the man but what he saw in the building convinced him that the fire had not been an accident. Further events lead Simon to the conclusion that the fire and the Fascist group just might be connected and represent a far greater threat than the mere destruction of a country house or even the death of one man.

This is a very well written story and even though this is very much a story of it's time it has held up well. The one thing that might strike a modern reader as a bit odd is that Simon is a bit too perfect, he is just a bit stronger, quicker, smarter than those around him. He can drive just a bit faster, shoot a bit better, and is just a bit luckier than anyone else. And it goes without saying that he is better looking and better dressed so naturally he has unlimited funds and a beautiful girl friend.

I enjoyed this book SO much that I didn't want to put it down!the storyline of yellowstone going to erupt and the magnatude of what that could mean is compelling.A well written storyline with characters who you care about.The narrator,Michael Lesley was wonderful!A MUST read!

Story good, production & narration mediocre

The story itself was good and while Yellowstone being a super volcano is not unique I think the terrorist plot addition may be.

I was disappointed with the production quality especially starting at chapter 10. I could believe that the overlapping voices and echo were a download error but I'm not sure that was it. Then there was the narration....between the choppy dialogue and the continuous long pauses after nearly every sentence making one think the story had stopped (both of which only got worse after chapter 10), it was exasperating.

After a while the story became rather predictable but it was still good, just wish the narration and production had been up to par.

Gripping storyline reads like a brilliant first!

I so wanted to love this book. It read so much like an amazingly pitched first story. Great original story concept, great narrator , well written with appropriately placed plot crescendos.

However, the storyline became way too contrived and lost me in the details.

I thought the narrator was fantastic! His voice is clear, well modolated, Amd enthusiastic. I will look from books that he has narrated.

If i could make some recommendations, I would change the cover-"man" on cover doesn't look like the Jason I pictured and the exploding volcano is cheesyy. Also the sleeves book description made me think this book was dystopian ,

Which it was not.

Great Listening to

Michael Kramer did a very good job narrating the book. It was a great first novel for Nic Pizzolatto.

No Happy Ending (or beginning or middle)

This tightly crafted book is literary noir at its finest. The central character is a bad man through and through and yet the author, displays his considerable writing skills, by managing to elicit the reader's sympathy for the unrepentant hoodlum. There is plenty of tragedy in this book, very little redemption and no happy endings, all of which you are made fully aware of in the first few pages. This is not a thriller, a lightweight, easy read for taking to the beach. It is a serious work of fiction. If you approach it as such, you will enjoy it and it will linger in your mind for a long time to come.

Disappointing

Very ordinary, sadly. Galveston never manages to do anything new or fresh; it just sits stolidly within the confines of crime fiction.

This is a good story, dark, but compelling. I mostly didn't want to put it down. The narration was good, but relentlessly gloomy and monotone. The style fitted the novel, but the it may have been five star, had there been moments of a change in tone. I look forward to more books by this author.

A short but very enjoyable listen.

Dennis Lehane has written some excellent thrillers and a few have been made into fairly great movies. This is the third iteration of The Drop as it started life as a short story, was then written for screen and lastly fleshed out into this short novel, more or less the opposite way to normal!

The dingy Boston bar and the dangerous cast of characters that make it their home are all well drawn out in such a short space of time, none moreso than Bob, whose quiet life erupts in the wake of the bar he works in being robbed and him finding a puppy. What a strange sentence to write!

Great short listen, well read and thoroughly recommended as are the majority of Lahane's books

A Riveting Tale Read Masterfully

This story features one of the most unique and rogue heroes I've encountered in modern novels. Fritz Tullis, a disgraced history professor at University of Texas, mopes home to the backwoods of Maryland's eastern shores to live with his wealthy 83 year old mother. He's the youngest of 3, born 18 years after his next oldest sibling. Spoiled, unappreciative and known as a careless thrill seeker, he makes a rundown shack on the property into a livable home.

A rare bird and a simple white lie to protect a lover's feelings lead him to stumble into a murder. From there it becomes a cat and mouse adventure, only who is the cat and who is the mouse.

One of the first novels I listened to on Audible was No Country For Old Men, read by Tom Stechschulte. I loved him then and he is equally wonderful here.

It's a fast read, an easy 4 star rating for me.

Meh

The book started out great, with what seemed like an original premise...then it derailed. Read only if you don't mind that police officers and government officials are portrayed as absolute imbeciles (there is no other explanation for how the main character is allowed to continue on his merry way, investigating a situation on his own with disastrous consequences for all). The main character is an imbecile too--so many of his actions are simply preposterous (two of the female characters mention his "boyish" nature...and he does indeed behave like a fifteen-year-old several times...perhaps his actions might have seemed more believable if he was indeed a teenager). The dialogue between him and the women of his life is painfully stilted and hard to listen to. The female characters are mostly stereotypes (the author uses the word "vulnerable" as a compliment when describing two of the female characters, need I say more?) Towards the end I was tempted to stop listening several times.

The story line is pretty good but I really struggled with how the narrator did the women. Not sure if the female parts were written poorly or if it was how the narrator portrayed them. Frankly it pretty much ruined it for me.

Quite good

I enjoyed this book but at times the author seemed to lose his hold on you and I felt myself waving but knew if I kept on he would get back on track. Having said that I said enjoy it.

I am of a certain age and I feel that this book can relate to those strange times in social history when certain things were not acceptable. Slightly different from Rendall's usual form but I enjoyed it. Felt she captured the era so correctly and the characters were well drawn but perhaps not for a younger audience.

Stinky Tofu Anyone???

Interesting novel set in Taiwan. The protagonist, Jing-naan, runs a food stand in Shilin Night Market in Taipei but once had aspirations for more. He attended UCLA briefly until his returns to Taiwan to fulfill family obligations. After the death of his girlfriend, Julia, whom he had not seen for years, he becomes an unlikely detective, pursuing justice at the bequest of the Julia's parents.

The best part of this novel is the description of the Taiwan, especially of the night market -- the culture, the sights, smells and the FOOD. Even when Jing-naan travels outside the market, the food descriptors follow him (most memorable -- "clouds the color of rancid, fatty meat".)

I enjoyed hearing the expositions on the history of Taiwan and its people, but there was too much, which slowed down the story and made the mystery seem secondary (or tertiary.) There were episodes of good suspense, clever writing and humorous dialogue, though and the characters in the night market were interesting, although they seemed like caricatures.

This was enjoyable, but mostly due to the descriptions of the setting and its history. If you are looking for a riveting mystery, you might want to skip this one.

Feodor Chin, the narrator does fine job, especially with the protagonist and other male characters.

Grim, grimmer and grimmest.

What would have made Ghost Month better?

I bought this book because it was recommended by Tim Hallinan, who is one of my very favorite writers. His talents are so far above those of Mr. Lin and Mr. Chin, that there is really no comparison, although I will note a few discrepancies. First, Tim's books are loaded with humor, lovable characters, plots that are written with breakneck speed, and also are full of Tim's love of the Thai people and of many aspects of the Southeast Asian countries. Mr. Lin's book has almost none of these. It begins with a grim murder and then goes quickly downhill from there.

This is...a Rather Good Book

This is Yannick Murphy, sitting at her computer, typing out her novel with an unusual storytelling approach. This is Karen White, sitting in front of a microphone, excellently reciting the books to future listeners...And so goes this book.

"This is" (Murphy's literary technique for bringing the reader into the story as though examining series of individual photographs) will be ringing in your ears by the time you finish listening to this book. It's a rather different way to depict each character's moments as she moves the reader/listener through a story about a small community, more specifically the parents and teens who comprise a local swim team, who have been terrified by a murder that has occurred in their midst.

Most of the time, the use of "this is..." was quite effective, and seemed much like looking at a series of pictures (in fact one character is a photographer). But sometimes the old nursery rhyme, "This is the house that Jack built" kept echoing through my mind in the background in some eerie fashion (perhaps that is the point of all this--that we understand stories through our own memories of momentary observations).

The book was at times very interesting and engaging--characters are vividly depicted through the most mundane observations about them. The story itself is a complex weaving of thoughts, feelings, reactions from--at first--the parents and kids on a swim team, but eventually, even the killer. It felt as though one was inside many of them, understanding the situation from each of their perspectives. Chris, who worries that her husband is having an affair.

The story is just plain boring and the reading is awkward at best. I love being read to but I hate, hate, hate weird false accents to delineate a speaker.

A straightforward dramatic reading is preferable to attempts to "act" out the parts!

This has irritating phony Germanish ?? sounding accents, like "I vant to go there"

Oh poor me..someone has been murdered

the long story of a whiny , self indulgent family that seems no need to take responsibility for their actions. Blame and victim hood is the "plate de jour".

A murder takes place which seems like a nuance to the protagonists.

Another fabulous James Patteson book

Great story, full of surprises...as expected from James Patteson. Well read and easy to listen to. Highly recommend.

Disappointed!

My review does not reflect on the Narrators, but I was very disappointed in the story. I have not even listened to very much of it, because of the terrible language. The author has progressively increased this type of language in his books as well, and therefore I won't be reading, or listening to them anymore. I was disappointed, because I enjoyed his books in the past so was looking forward to the experience of listening to one, but was disappointed from the start. I wish there was a 2nd version one could purchase without the bad language.
