    Book "Lonely Furrow"
This book arrived in very good condition, and I enjoyed reading it. There were no missing pages or other items to mar my enjoyment. Thank you very much for your fine establishment.
Good historical fiction for the time period
This is the last book in a trilogy about a 15th century English knight and his family over several generations. Good historical fiction for the time period. I read first two books, Knight's Acre and The Homecoming from the stacks at the library. They didn't have this final book of the trilogy, so I bought it. Glad I did. Wish she'd written more before she passed away. I have enjoyed other books by Norah Lofts, and love the area near Bury St. Edmunds, England, where she is from.
    Four Stars
Great writing and storyline as always
this is part of a good trilogy
Norah Lofts has written several trilogies and this is one of them. It might be my favorite. It is about a knight and his lady. He leaves her to go to a joust and becomes a slave in a far away country. A beautiful woman helps him to escape and they return home to England. He is so happy to get home to his wife Sybilla. But now he has two women in love with him and no clue how to handle the situation. I don't want to give too much away so will stop here but there are lots of details about England in that time which are so interesting.
Norah Lofts is a great story teller
Even though the print was very small in this book, the content was easy reading and enjoyable.

"Listeners will wish that divine intervention could keep this book from ending." (AudioFile Magazine), review of Jane Austen and the Archangel.
Until then passion had only lived on the page...
Jane Austen hasn't written a creative word in months. She secretly fears she may not have it in her to write a single word more about love. Yet when the mysterious Michael Grace appears on her doorstep, she's cast into a world of emotion beyond even her wildest imaginings. Though she fears he might be a spy, she enlists his help to find her friend's fiancé, missing in the Peninsular War. But Michael isn't what he seems, and the passion and doubts he ignites turn everything Jane trusts upside down. What Jane doesn't know is that her mystery man is an angel. One who's never failed to get what he goes after.
Some rules just beg to be broken....
It's not easy being a bad-boy angel and Michael is paying the penalty. Demoted to working undercover in a sleepy English village, he's chafing to launch the dangerous mission he's been sent to command. But when he meets Jane, he's irresistibly drawn to her, even though involvement with her could jeopardize her life and his status as an angel.
When Lucifer tries to use Jane as a pawn in his vile schemes, Michael discovers that fighting the forces of darkness is nothing compared to the challenge of telling Jane the truth. Can the angel who's never lost a battle win the heart of a woman who's afraid of love?
    Critic Reviews:
Elizabeth Jasicki's luscious voice, slow delivery, and perfect upper-class English accent converge to make this clever and romantic story, the first in a series, a heavenly experience. Bad boy Archangel Michael, best known for slaying dragons, is sent to a sleepy village in England to help in the war effort. His arrival puts him squarely in the path of Jane Austen, who is having writer's block after her success with Pride and Prejudice. Jasicki mesmerizes, giving just the right amount of manly appeal to the charming Michael and just the right amount of spunk to the clever Jane. Listeners will wish that divine intervention could keep this book from ending. (

    A Cracking Read
LORDS OF THE PACIFIC is set in the 18th Century in the South Pacific. With a background of French and English attempting to colonise the Pacific and their encounters with the noble but ferocious Islanders, this is a really good read. Adventure, action, romance all set to the historical background of the last frontier of the Pacific. Highly recommended.
    Lords of the Pacific
It was a well written and told a story that has much historical information about a place and people that is not often explored.

"And the winner is...Sky Birds Dare! by L Ron Hubbard, narrated by a Full Cast! I was very fortunate this year to have been contacted by Galaxy Press who was looking for some reviews on a series of L Ron Hubbard audiobooks they were putting out. That was lucky for me because otherwise I would have missed out on something special. Hubbard's writing is always good, naturally, but the multi-cast music and sound production by Galaxy is stunning. Sky Birds Dare! is just one of the Hubbard stories I read this year, but it contains one of the most beautifully descriptive scenes I can remember reading in a long time. For all these reasons and more, Sky Birds Dare! was my favorite pulp-fiction audiobook of the year." (Audiobook Heaven)

    Publisher's Summary:
One late spring evening in 1912, in the kitchens at Sterne, preparations begin for an elegant supper party in honor of Emerald Torrington's twentieth birthday. But only a few miles away, a dreadful accident propels a crowd of mysterious and not altogether savory survivors to seek shelter at the ramshackle manor - and the household is thrown into confusion and mischief. The cook toils over mock turtle soup and a chocolate cake covered with green sugar roses, which the hungry band of visitors are not invited to taste.
But nothing, it seems, will go to plan. As the passengers wearily search for rest, the house undergoes a strange transformation. One of their number (who is most definitely not a gentleman) makes it his business to join the birthday revels. Evening turns to stormy night, and a most unpleasant game threatens to blow respectability to smithereens: Smudge Torrington, the wayward youngest daughter of the house, decides that this is the perfect moment for her Great Undertaking.
The Uninvited Guests is the bewitching new novel from number-one best seller Sadie Jones. The prizewinning author of The Outcast triumphs in this frightening yet delicious drama of dark surprises - where social codes are uprooted and desire daringly trumps propriety - and all is alight with Edwardian wit and opulence.
    Critic Reviews:
Sadie Jones third novel charms and bewitches all who open its covers, Jones leads us through a gloomy, twisting plot full of enchanting characters. The Uninvited Guests proves to be captivating and darkly humorous: a perfectly crafted ghost story. (The Bookseller)

    Shame!
I had read very good reviews of this book and looked forward to hearing it. I couldn't have been more disappointed! There just isn't anything in it that made me want to continue. I kept going thinking that it could only get better ... and it actually got worse. I think it was aimed at teens, but I don't know any teens who would enjoy this. The characters weren't even two-dimensional. The reader tried very hard but she was on a lost cause. I didn't manage the second part. It has gone into the 'Trashcan'.
    Strange
I was excited to start listening to this book having read reviews and hearing about it from others. I was so disapointed, i found it slow and strange, i was never fully engrossed. I wasn't so much ghostly and creepy but more "odd". I listened to the end hoping for a big twist etc but found the ending so very very predictable. This review however may say more about me than the story and the silly characters, sorry.
    Awful-starts well then drags
What disappointed you about The Uninvited Guests?
I had read a great review of it and had high expectations.
Would you ever listen to anything by Sadie Jones again?
    No
Would you listen to another book narrated by Emilia Fox?
Yes-she did the best she could
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Uninvited Guests?
    Most of the second half
    Marvellous!
I couldn't wait to continue listening to this.

    Ruined by Narrator
I think an unabridged story, performed by someone else, would have been enjoyable, but this abridged book could have been edited better, in my opinion. This was one of the worse narrations I've heard. The only thing that made it tolerable was she had a pleasant voice, but the voice she used for her characters were so unbelievable. Some voices were harsh when they should have been soft, sounded angry when they should have been read with compassion, etc. It was not an easy book to listen to, because her reading was so contradictory to the scenes

A thoroughly modern tale of politics, spin-doctoring, and media manipulation. As the harsh wind holds the Greek fleet trapped in the straits at Aulis, frustration and political impotence turn into a desire for the blood of a young and innocent woman - blood that will appease the gods and allow the troops to set sail. And when Iphigeneia, Agamemnon's beloved daughter, is brought to the coast under false pretences, it looks as if the ships will soon be on their way. But can a father really go to these lengths to secure political victory? And can a daughter willingly give up her life for the worldly ambitions of her father?
    Critic Reviews:
"Incandescent....One of the three most important British novelists at work today....It is impossible to read [this novel] without feeling an immediacy both unbearable and profound, as if this week's headlines were being incised into the conscience and the heart....Unsworth has combined several versions of the Iphigenia myth to set up an entrancing, frightening mystery." (Richard Eder, New York Times)
"Intellectually agile, thrillingly stylish...The Songs of the Kings effortlessly proves that modern life is the stuff of ancient myth." (The Guardian)

    atmosphere, scheming and misogyny
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Songs of the Kings?
The scene in which Iphigenia and her slave were discussing which of them would be the human sacrifice and why.

    Publisher's Summary:
Cool. Balanced. Modern. The precisions of science, the wild variance of lust, the catharsis of confession and the fear of failure - these are things that happen in the Glass Room. High on a Czechoslovak hill, the Landauer House shines as a wonder of steel and glass and onyx built specially for newlyweds Viktor and Liesel Landauer, a Jew married to a gentile. But the radiant honesty of 1930 that the house, with its unique Glass Room, seems to engender quickly tarnishes as the storm clouds of World War II gather, and eventually the family must flee, accompanied by Viktor's lover and her child.
But the house's story is far from over, and as it passes from hand to hand, from Czech to Russian, both the best and the worst of the history of Eastern Europe becomes somehow embodied and perhaps emboldened within the beautiful and austere surfaces and planes so carefully designed, until events come full-circle.

    A Man, A Woman, A House
This novel is proof that if you like the characters and the writing, a book in which nothing really happens can still be riveting.
But honestly, to say nothing really happens is not fair because in a story about peoples lives that span 30 years and includes WW2 everything happens! Perhaps its because I have no imagination that I cant verbalize it better.
Its the story of a man and woman and a house. Sounds dull, but its not because the people were interesting to me. I didnt necessarily LIKE all of them, but nevertheless I still found them interesting; I was curious about their history and their future, I wanted to know what happened to them, I cared about their lives.
I particularly liked the way the house itself was a main character, especially the Glass Room and the Onyx Wall - how original! I wonder if the way I conjured it up in my mind is anywhere close to what the author envisioned?
    A Thoroughly Good Read
I could not put this book down. The characters are wonderfully drawn and lived for me. The era it covers is written tactfully but its horror is not overlooked. I found a better understanding of the times and the affect on the different nationalities than any history lesson had done. The use of the house as a medium in which to hold the story together works well, however I was dudappointed that I wad never entirely able to visualise the house. Not sure whether that was writer error or more likely my failing. Perhaps the ending was slightly too comfortable but nevertheless I would thoroughly recommend this book.
    Haunting and beautiful
Jefferson Mays brings this beautiful and moving book to life with his perfect, delicate style. I have enjoyed this immensely and encourage you to read it. Also go to the Villa Tugendhat website and seek out the Virtual Tour to experience the beauty of the house upon which the story is based.
    Wonderful evocation!
Wonderful evocation of a house, people and a variety of times in the history of Czekoslovakia and what followed.
    The GLass Room
This book is so slow I almost gave up but it started to come alive in chapter 24 all the way to about ch 29 we went into repetition again . It comes to life again from chapter 42 to the end..please read this book it explains what true love really is in its many forms.Leasil Landau is a true lady right to the end of this book.
