you will be disappointed. If you buy it for the wonderful characters ...
I was surprised by the fact the this trilogy doesn't follow the normal pattern of trilogies, this story is entirely separate from the first, and has nothing to do with the characters I was hoping to follow for a while longer. However these characters are just as poignant and endearing to me as the first ones were and I had a hard time putting it down. If you purchase this under the premise of learning more of the lives of the couple in book 1, you will be disappointed. If you buy it for the wonderful characters Delia brings to life in each of the separate stories, you will be blessed!
    Love Story Amidst Much Deception
I should begin by conceding that this book started with a bit of a disadvantage in that as book 2 of a series, I expected it to continue or at least be somehow related toHearts Awakening (Hearts Along the River book 1)(which I loved), but it wasn't. It just happens to take place next to a river and book 1 happened to take place on a river :/
Once I got past the fact that this was in fact a totally unrelated story, I began to settle in and get attached to my characters. I liked my hero and heroine, and I understood their motivations (even in moments where I wished they'd act differently!). I personally tend to strongly dislike any story where someone is knowingly keeping someone they're interested in deceived (I actually find them painful), but I have to concede the author handled it as gracefully as I've ever seen it done - so much so I didn't find it painful in the least in part simply because I genuinely believed that the main characters hated the deceptions!
There were moments it skipped parts of the story I wish it would've shared and other moments it shared parts I'd have been fine skipping, but in the end it was an enjoyable story I'll undoubtedly read again. I look forward to Parr's future efforts :)
    When love finds you
This was a very fascinating book. I found it hard to put it down. The mysterious happenings kept me hooked. The characters in the story come alive and you find yourself rooting for more. There were a few twists and turns that captivate you.
    Confusing and slow moving
I was very confused that Ruth was posing as both a reformed prostitute and as a widow? I am not sure if it was the storyline that confused me or simply the fact that it wasn't very interesting. I was a little over 60 percent finished before it became more interesting. I have liked other Delia Parr books, this one just did not hit the mark for me.
    Mystery & Intrique
I was confused when I began reading this story! There was already questions that needed answers more I read the more I was intrigued. I couldn't put the book down, I had to know the answers to my questions. When everything came to light, I had tears in my eyes.

1793. HMS Amazon is returning from an arduous duty in the Indian Ocean when she encounters a French frigate in the Atlantic.
When Amazon left England nearly two years before the countries were not at war but any hopes that the peace still holds are shattered as the Frenchman unexpectedly opens fire- a bloody sea battle ensues resulting in both triumph and personal tragedy for Acting Lieutenant John Fury. A battered Amazon puts into Gibraltar for repairs and there Fury has his promotion confirmed by Vice Admiral Lord Hood, commander of the Mediterranean Fleet. But with promotion comes a transfer away from his home on the Amazon and a new challenge. He will be the fifth lieutenant on the 74-gun-man of war Fortitude. Tedious blockading duty on the French Fleet in Toulon seems to be in prospect but then in a remarkable development Toulon and the enemy fleet are surrendered to Hood by French Monarchists. A series of unexpected events sees Fury temporarily transferred away from Fortitude, first to a brig, his first independent command, then to a gun ship and finally to defend a prominent fort ashore as the Republican armies, inspired by a young artillery officer by the name of Napoleon Bonaparte, establish a brutal siege of the port. It is soon clear that Britain and her allies are going to be hard pressed to hold onto their prize. But Fury has more to lose than most, in the maelstrom of the siege he has met and fallen in love with a pretty French girl, Sophie Gourrier. Somehow, as the defence crumbles, he must rescue his men and Sophie from the doomed city.

    battle of Toulon
1793 HMS Amazon arrives in Gibraltar after battle with French and the death of her Captain John Fury's uncle. Amazon was on way home to England after a year in the Indian ocean and was unaware that war had broken out between France and England. Lord Hood promoted Fury to Lieutenant and assigned him the HMS Fortitude on blockade duty off Toulon. G.S. Beard provide great battle scenes of the battle of Toulon both on land and sea. Fury falls for a Count's daughter Sophie Gourrier and he rescues her family which add some more drama to the story. Col. B.. Napoleon commanded artilery at Toulon. Beard did take some literary license to the battle but mostly it was accurate. Lots of action, sailing information and life in the 1790's British Navy makes this a great sea story to read. Terry Wale does a good job narrating the story.

Length: 13 hrs and 7 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-30-10
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 30 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
A stand-alone battle book, set this time in the 18th century in the rebellious colony of Massachusetts.
This new novel takes place during the very early days of the rebellion, or the War of Independence, before Washington and before the organization of a colonial army.
A small British fleet with a few soldiers on board had sailed in to be met, to their surprise, with an overwhelming strength of local militia.
Bernard Cornwell tells the story of those on both sides of the conflict , based largely on real figures, including of course Paul Revere (famous from a much later poem), and features the issues that appeared here and then throughout the whole war.
The success of Azincourt all over the world was such that there will be a very warm welcome for a new single battle book from the master storyteller.
    Members Reviews:
    liked it
multiple readers could add to the story. I liked the overall a lot as every other Bernard Cornwell's books I've read.
    fort what
Would you try another book from Bernard Cornwell and/or Robin Bowerman?
i like the sharpe series robin bowerman was alright as the narrator but the story could have been a lot better a bit dissapointing after the sharpe books
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
a think a little less of the letter extracts and more on the storyline the ending is also a bit flat not one of bernards better books
What does Robin Bowerman bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
i think he brings some characters to life
Do you think The Fort needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
no not really one like that is enough
Why do you read Bernard Cornwell?
Very mixed reviews on this book both here and on Amazon. In short, if you want a "Sharp"style Story this book is not for you. If you love history this is yet another brilliantly researched and superbly written novel that brings real historical figures to life. No it is not action packed but I was never bored listening to it. Bernard Cornwell rights about real history and this is a very different kind of story, he is not going to change it to make it more exciting for the average reader. We get enough of that from Hollywood and it is for this reason why I believe Bernard Cornwell remains so successful. This book has left me wanting to know more about the War of Independence and I really hope he writes more - but then we want him to finish Starbuck and are there some more Sharp stories?................Excellent narration on this recording too.
    The Fort
Set in the 18th century in the middle of the American war of Independance. This book tells a classic Bernard Cornwell tale of great imagination mixed with his unnerving ability to make actual history come to life. A small british force of sailors and royal marines are instructed to occupy and hold a small fort. In what seems a hopeless task when they come up against an overwhelming force of rebels. There are many side stories in this book but none of more interest than that of Paul Reveer. the Hero of the Boston night ride comes to life with some unexpected endings.
    The Fort
    Not very good, really boring
not as good as previous books. could be better

    Publisher's Summary:
In the tradition of Philippa Gregory's smart, transporting fiction comes this tale of dark suspense, love, and betrayal, featuring two star-crossed sisters, one lost and the other searching.
Bright and inquisitive, Hannah Powers was raised by a father who treated her as if she were his son. While her beautiful and reckless sister, May, pushes the limits of propriety in their small English town, Hannah harbors her own secret: their father has given her an education forbidden to women. But Hannah's secret serves her well when she journeys to colonial Maryland to reunite with May, who has been married off to a distant cousin after her sexual misadventures ruined her marriage prospects in England.
As Hannah searches for May, who has disappeared, she finds herself falling in love with her brother-in-law. Alone in a wild, uncultivated land where the old rules no longer apply, Hannah is freed from the constraints of the society that judged both her and May as dangerous - too smart, too fearless, and too hungry for life. But Hannah is also plagued by doubt, as her quest for answers to May's fate grows ever more disturbing and tangled.

    What a twist...
What a twist. This book made me sad, angry, sad again, and then totally pissed off! What a story! It kept me going until the end. Kept me on pins and needles. It's hard to stop reading after you've begun because of the mystery surrounding the disappearance of May. What a story, I tell you. I loved it! I crave another.
    I was very suprised.
I enjoyed this book a lot! There was some spots where I feel she rambled on a little to much, however it was a beautiful historical romance novel that kept me very interested . Bravo, looking for another book right now from Mary Sharratt.
A most wonderful story, don't miss it!
I was looking for a book that was narrated by Terry Donnelly, any good book, since I love her voice and find her to be amazingly gifted. Initially, I was hesitant to buy this book because of 1 poor rating and luck of Audible reviews. I am glad I did!
Vanishing Point is a very believable story that touched my heart - story of love and loss, happiness and pain, devotion and cruelty - story of human condition. Wonderful character development and attention to detail. I cried at the end - please do not worry, this book does not have a bad or dissatisfying ending, but because of how real the characters were to me. I did not want the book to end.
The story line is well described in the Library Review, and I don't want to give anything away. I have a feeling this book will be more appealing to women than to men. If you love good fiction with a historical background, this is it!

A breathtaking novel of romantic obsession, longing and one woman's choice between motherhood and her operatic calling.
It is 1903. Dr. Ravell is a young Harvard-educated obstetrician with a growing reputation for helping couples conceive. Inspired by the author's family history, the novel is sensual, sexy, and heart-stopping in its bittersweet beauty.

    Timely and healing!
John Shors has become one of my favorite authors of the 21st century. I believe he is the voice of our recent past, and a voice of the humanity in all of us as we struggle to keep what is good and moral against a tide of selfishness and instability in our world.
Mr. Shors is an author of exceptional capabilities with characterization conveying feelings and angst that will so touch your heart that you feel actually set within the place and time with his characters.
Having lived through the Viet Nam War as a child of the '60's, I found this book especially interesting. I have not been able to read about the War, per se. It was a time of loss and anger and confusion for me. A time I just haven't cared to scrutinize. But, this book gave me a way of "looking" that was thoughtful, caring and healing.
Through the eyes of Iris, the daughter of a Viet Nam veteran left with post traumatic stress syndrome and memories he could only heal by going back to create a home for street children; we see, hear, smell and feel the thriving, messy, whirling, beautiful, dangerous and noisy place called Ho Chi Minh City -- formerly Siagon. I found many of the things surprisingly familiar to me...through pictures that were flashed daily on the t.v. when our boys were over there, I suppose. I could see through Shors writings the brightness of colors, smell the food, hear the horn blasts, and shiver at the sufferings. John Shors didn't miss a beat.
Iris goes to Viet Nam to continue her father's dream and to help the street children, bringing with her a life-long friend...a now wounded, permanently handicapped vet. of the Iraqi War, who is suffering and suicidal. This character boldly gives the reader insight into all veterans returning with injuries of body, mind and spirit from the horrors of war. Along with an eternally hopeful Vietnamese woman, they work to complete the Center for Street Children that will become the catalyst for their own salvations.
Through their work, inspiration, and close companionships with a little group of starving, abused and critically ill children, Iris and Noah find a new place of rest for all. And, that included me.
I highly recommend this book for all and everyone. John Shors is an author who needs to be read because he will be one to make a mark in these coming years. He's an American writer of note and value.
I also recommend this book because it's good for those of us who have come through the Viet Nam War (a war not successful and not popular with the American people) and are going through the Iraqi/Afghani War...another one which may have a similar outcome. We might find some solace in the fact that we will survive. Timely and healing....

Gloomy as a cold, rainy day on the moors.
I loved the book Jane Eyre, love Jane Austen, Louisa May Alcott, etc. This is the worst thing I've ever heard. When I assumed I'd made it through an hour and a half and checked and it was only 30 minutes, I just couldn't take it anymore.
Chapter 1 -she's sitting in a room by a window with her father after surgery. Next chapter, going to a school and realizing she "loves language". Chapter 3, sitting in a room by a window with her father. That's as far as I got.
    Slow - Kindda Boring
I guess I should not have expected much in the way of plot or anything real juicy or entertaining. This was just.... ho hum. You gotta have a real low expectation for entertainment with this one. I should have known better.

    Publisher's Summary:
Gibran's Jesus: The Son of Man is a portrayal of Christ through the eyes of His contemporaries - men and women who knew him as an enemy, friend, teacher, and Son.
The characters, including Mary Magdalen, Simon Peter, Pontius Pilate, and Barabbas are brought to life against the social, political, and religious realities of Palestine and Rome at that period. The narration gives the listener the impression that they are there 2000 years ago, discussing what has become the most talked-about period in the history of our planet.
Read here what Pilate's wife had to say to a Roman lady: 'I was walking with my maidens in the groves outside of Jerusalem when I saw Him with a few men and women sitting about Him; and He was speaking to them in a language which I only half understood. But one needs not a language to perceive a pillar of light or a mountain of crystal. The heart knows what the tongue may never utter and the ears may never hear. He was speaking to His friends of love and strength. I know He spoke of love because there was melody in His voice; and I know He spoke of strength because there were armies in His gestures. And He was tender, though even my husband could not have spoken with such authority. When He saw me passing by He stopped speaking for a moment and looked kindly upon me. And I was humbled; and in my soul I knew I had passed by a God. After that day His image visited my privacy when I would not be visited by man or woman; and His eyes searched my soul when my own eyes were closed. And His voice governs the stillness of my nights. I am held fast forevermore; and there is peace in my pain, and freedom in my tears. Beloved friend, you have never seen that man, and you will never see Him. He is gone beyond our senses, but of all men He is now the nearest to me.'
    Critic Reviews:
"In Jesus, The Son of Man, we have a most unusual book of great beauty; you feel that the contemporaries of the Master would have spoken much as the author imagines them to speak...a truly scriptural mode of thought and expression...a work of literary and artistic worth." (Catholic Times.)
    Members Reviews:
    It grows on you
Listening to this book, I was initially surprised at its boldness in talking on behalf of those who knew Jesus. Once I accepted that it is essentially a work of fiction, but recognised that it is seeped in scripture, I relaxed into it. This is a challenging book. It speaks for characters who both hated and loved Jesus. It tells of his power as a man, as one who walked among us. I would recommend this book for those who want to know more about Jesus, offering caution to remember that it is a work of fiction.
