    Publisher's Summary:
Seven-year-old David Glum watches as his grandfather is abducted by a legendary herd of elephants. Twenty years later, David returns to his parents' home to focus on growing a beard, a goal he feels sure he can accomplish. Once the beard reaches a respectable girth, uncontrollable things begin happening around him. His mother dies. Maybe. His father might really be a man named Gary Wrench. David is sure of one thing: His family is cursed. It could have something to do with an eternal flame his grandfather stole from a possibly imaginary group of people called the Nefarions. David and Wrench begin a surreal cross-country journey that might have something to do with saving the world. Along the way they pass through a number of absurd towns, meet some disagreeable people, and discover an America that is radically different from the one they thought they knew. And all the while, the beard grows, gaining strength, leading them toward a distant island that most people think doesn't exist.

    just a little more
Andersen Prunty's THE BEARD is a fun book. Anyone who enjoys a good travel book with rites of passage would enjoy this book. And if you like weird elements added to the mix, moreso. The introduction is what grabbed me. Prunty's prose is wonderful and sets a high bar for the rest of the book.
The introduction is also the problem I have with THE BEARD. Prunty introduces us to a magical world with magical words. It is beautifully written and you feel you're being pulled into a contemporary fantasy world. We are introduced to the protagonist, David Glum and his grandfather watching the grass grow during an Ohio afternoon. The grandfather, a former anthropologist, tells a wonderful and fantastic tale of elephant winds, a race of Nefarions, and of their home island somewhere in the Malefic Ocean. His grandfather soon disappears and with him goes the literary magic.
THE BEARD quickly descends into what is quite possibly bizarro fiction's closest answer to true absurdist fiction. As I read it, I was hoping the "the beard" would follow a similar pattern as Nikolai Gogol's THE NOSE. Instead the beard never becomes a character in this work of existentialist philosophy reminiscent of a Philip K. Dick novel, except set in the present. Unfortunately, Prunty is neither Gogol or Dick. The dialogue can be a bit too mundane at times, descriptions can be lacking, and the story isn't refined enough to make up for these things.
The ending was a bit too saccharine for my taste. It almost has a Hollywood feel to it. Leaving for room for sequels?
Don't get me wrong, THE BEARD is an enjoyable book, However it strives to be more than it is and fails in that department. It could have been a magical contemporary fantasy, it could have been humorous post-modern absurdism, or it could have been a philosophical treatise on the nature of being. Instead it becomes a travel journal in a surrealistic world.
Still, it's fun to read. Prunty doesn't let up in this travel adventure. It certainly is the most enjoyable piece of bizarro fiction I have read, but it still has the hallmarks of bizarro fiction that keep it from becoming more. I would gladly recommend this book to others who are looking for something fun and weird.
    Different from Prunty
I've read a bunch of Prunty's book, almost all of his novels and a lot of his short stories.

Wrong synopsis listed on web page.
    Any additional comments?
Beware...the synopsis of this book is actually for a book by Janet Evanovich with the same title. For the correct synopsis I would recommend going to the Amazon web site and reading the description for the e-book version.
This book is part of a series that I find very funny and entertaining. If you like to read stories that make you laugh with some light romance, you should like this series.

The most violent comedy since The Bible.
DC gets destroyed. Harland gets wasted. America gets the leader it deserves.
This pitch-black satire follows a disillusioned pothead and his friends navigating an American minefield of domestic terrorists, power-grabbing opportunists, and meaningless dead-end jobs. Philosophical, irreverent, and sometimes oddly hopeful, Hyperbole explores what might become of the laymen when America's head gets chopped off.
Fans of transgressive fiction and dark humor should grab this audiobook with both hands and not eat or sleep until it's consumed.
Hyperbole is the debut novel by author Ryan Parmenter, who has performed in and around Detroit, Michigan as a comic improviser, a teahouse musician with JRS, and as leader of the defunct progressive band Eyestrings.

    Strangely Rewarding
This is an odd book, in the best sense of the word.
I'll admit that initially I found the style and narration needed a bit of time to tune into, but that only took a chapter or so.
Nearly every paragraph made me laugh, had me wanting to memorise something to quote at someone later, or had me silently agreeing "me too, me too". And this was managed without sounding irritatingly arch or too clever for it's own good: not easy to pull off.
Vocabulary, sentence construction, pace, comic timing, sparse sound effects, perfectly balanced.
Parmenter narrates, and did a great job. His native accent is distinctive but he manages to give each character an instantly recognisable voice without hamming it up.
Although there's certainly a degree of misery in this book, I thought the summary made it sound far bleaker than it actually was. Can't decide if that makes it a failure from some angles or not.
In the end, I cared about just about every character, laughed immoderately far more times than I expected to, and was left with a strong feeling of nostalgia for a place and way of life of which I have no experience. Very satisfying.
My one reservation is that it feels like a book that has so much original material that it may be a one-off. I'd be happy to be proved wrong.

    Hilarious...again
Hilarious. I stumbled across The Dan Starkey stories quite by accident and love them. A fabulous mix of suspense and black humour all set in the Northern Irish provinces. I've actually learnt a lot about the country though these novels whilst enjoying the haphazard and ultimately disastrous exploits of the ex journalist cum PI cum alcoholic Starkey. This stir is fast paced, hilariously tragic and whilst I knew the guessed at the ultimate end, there are so many twists in the novel it didn't matter. In fact if the ending had been any different it wouldn't have been a dan starjey story. Brilliant. Colin Bateman and Chris Brookmyre are my absolute crime/ dark humour favourite authors. Read them and be entertained.
    irritatingly amusing
Dan starkeys character has got to be the irritating human being! I would have to shoot him too. He really is the most facetious crass idiotic personality!
Thoroughly enjoyable, up to a point
An extremely enjoyable story, great characters, very good narration, such a shame he didn't know how to finish it.
    Loved it.
Colin Bateman can't go wrong, especially when narrated by Adam Moore. Great story and engaging narration.

    A harrowing but satisfying read.
Would you consider the audio edition of Every Day Is Mother's Day to be better than the print version?
I have not read the print version of this book so I can't answer this question.
What other book might you compare Every Day Is Mother's Day to and why?
It reminded me of A Change of Climate in some ways. In both books a child is murdered. The deaths are the result of grotesque evil, both on the psychological level and the spiritual. Both books went to some very dark places that took some commitment on my part to get through.
What about Sandra Duncans performance did you like?
She was equally fine reading the poignant passages as well as the humorous ones. She made the characters come alive.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Includes a dinner party scene as exciting as The Red Wedding episode in Game of a Thrones!
    Any additional comments?
    A truly great first novel.
    Funny and thought provoking
There seem to be many Hillary Mantels: the present tense histories of Thomas Cromwell and the French revolution, and these character studies of the socially dysfunctional, like Beyond Black and this one. The story is cleverly constructed, and centers around a mother and daughter of interest to the welfare system who fall coincidentally into the path of an unhappy teacher and his unexciting wife.
The reading is excellent, very well characterised and clear, the comedy really brought out by the energy of the delivery.
    a srangly beguiling read
Where does Every Day Is Mother's Day rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
not one of the best but amongst my top 10 so far i will certainly listen to it again
Would you be willing to try another book from Hilary Mantel? Why or why not?
quite possibly although I have read paper copies of 2 of her books already
Which character as performed by Sandra Duncan was your favourite?
I liked mum and daughter the interaction and misunderstanding between them
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
would you like to live next door to these people ?
    Any additional comments?
i enjoyed listening to this book i found it at times quite thought provoking and sad
    Depressing
I really didn't enjoy this book and am not quite sure what point it was trying to make, apart from the futility of life! There wasn't one single character I could warm to.
    Stories
Enjoyed the stories, all intertwining, each individual, a spiders web of human frailties. Cannot identify a special highspot, what a rare lot of characters there are. At the time of writing I know of a follow up book, if I had not known would have water one. Good read. Thank You
    Colin.

Title: Every Boy Should Have a Man
    Author: Preston L. Allen
    Narrator: Michael McConnohie
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 22 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-24-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 6 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Humor
    Publisher's Summary:
A riveting, poignant satire of societal ills, with an added dose of fantasy, Every Boy Should Have a Man takes place in a post-human world, where creatures called oafs keep humanlike "mans" as beloved pets. One day, a poor boy oaf brings home a man, whom he hides under his bed, in the hopes his parents won't find out. When the man is discovered, the boy admits it is not his - but the boy is no delinquent. Despite the accusations being hurled at him, he's telling the truth when he says he found the man wandering aimlessly in the bramble. Nevertheless, he must return the man to his rightful owner. But when the heartbroken boy comes home from school one afternoon, he finds wrapped up in red ribbon a female man with a note around her neck: "Every boy should have a man. You're a fine son. Love, Dad."
Thus begins Every Boy Should Have a Man, Preston L. Allen's picaresque journey into uncharted territory in earth, sky, and firmament. This audiobook traces the story of the boy and his three "mans," Brown Skin who is not his, the tragic Red Sleeves who has no voice, and her quick-witted daughter Red Locks, whose epic journey takes her from the backbreaking drudgery of the mines, to the perils of the battlefield, to the savagery of cannibalism.
Oafs and mans each gain insight and understanding into one another's worlds, and the worlds that touch theirs - ultimately showing that oafs and mans share a common "humanity." Filled with surprising twists and turns, this audiobook is in part a morality tale that takes on many of today's issues, including poverty, the environment, sexism, racism, war, and religion, all in lighthearted King James prose.
    Editorial Reviews:
Written in a style reminiscent of the King James Bible, Every Boy Should Have a Man is a social satire set in a post-human world populated by creatures called oafs who keep humanlike "mans" as pets. Narrator Michael McConnohie has an expansive voice that wraps elegantly around the story of a boy oaf's three mans: Brown Skin, who returns to his rightful owner; Red Sleeves, who vanishes; and her quick-witted daughter Red Locks, who must survive the backbreaking mines and dangerous battlefields. McConnohie maintains an easygoing pace, linking themes of poverty, racism and environmental destruction with his sleek performance.
    Members Reviews:
    Planet of the Oafs
    This books is totally nuts!
Heres the story of a boy and his man. Mans are pets in this world and can be male or female. There are different kinds, high class, low class, ones that talk and ones that dont. Mans must be fed, walked, licensed and cared for.
Its fascinating to pick up the different themes in the story--animal abuse, racism, civilization versus primitivism, and to puzzle out what kind of creatures the boy and his family are.
This story, and particularly this straight-laced, authoritative reading by Michael McConnohie, comes off like both a parable and a fairy tale, recalling Planet of the Apes, and Ray Bradbury.

An amazing read that had me laughing out loud in a crowded waiting room as my car was being repaired for way too much money. If it had me laughing then, imagine how much joy it can bring on a normal day. I can't recommend this book enough.
    Classic Geek Comedy
Joseph has a unique geek voice that takes unexpected turns. Worth purchasing for the James Bond expense report alone. Must read.
    Joseph Who?
I'm from Europe and Joseph Scrimshaw is pretty much unknown over here, so I bought this book without knowing anything other then: "This is written by the guy who did that Star Wars Twitter thing on youtube". Seriously that was all I knew but I still funded his Kickstarter because that video was absolutely hilarious.
I was actually a little disappointed to find that this particular skit did not make it into the book. (You owe me a sequel Mr. Scrimshaw!) Or let's say I would be disappointed if the rest was not just as good if not even better. It is very rare that I actually laugh out loud while reading, I usually just smile or maybe chuckle but this book made me laugh so hard I had tears in my eyes. It is pure joy for anybody who likes geekdom and pop culture.
There is a "choose your own adventure"-story in this book that I play with anybody who dares to set a foot into my house, and everybody so far enjoyed it immensely.
Joseph Scrimshaw manages to cover almost every Geek Topic there is from James Bond to Star Wars to Star Trek, Doctor Who, Twilight, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, the Nintendo DS, Batman and many more. It is so much, that he even added an index of covered geek topics. That's what I call dedication!
I have to say, that the book is a little on the short side but that's okay, comedy books usually are.
As I said, I did not even really know who Joseph Scrimshaw was before I bought this book but now he is one of my favourite comedians, that's how funny he is.
Let me close by saying: BUY THIS BOOK! (Seriously you won't regret it - it's got vampire ponies!)
Comedy of Doom is scads of fun
Joseph Scrimshaw, live, comes off like Frank Gorshin as a perpetually petulant Kirk Douglas. His controlled reading style masks a deep sense of theater and an ever-inquisitive mind. It probably helps to hear Scrimshaw as you read him. Not necessary, but useful. I recommend going to one of his performances even if you don't buy the book, but I'll leave that as an exercise for the reader.
The book chapters alternate between longer essays, from his shows, and shorter bits, little slip-on-a-banana-peel gags.
I laughed out loud at "For Your Expense Report Only", but I'm a sucker for tales of bureaucracy behind world saving secret agents. Joe has an obsession with Star Wars, Superheros, the Zombie Apocalypse, Word Porn, and The Muppets, among many other geek topics. Seems reasonable.
The book is meticulously put together by people who understand that books are different than social media. I like that.

For fans of the Daily Show
What did you love best about The United States of Air?
This book is like a cross between South Park, the Daily Show, and George Orwell.
It's like 1984 only way funnier!
What was one of the most memorable moments of The United States of Air?
the scene between Frolick and the Prophet near the end. I didn't know whether to laugh or to cry.
Which character as performed by J.M. Porup was your favorite?
    Fatso!!!
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    Throwing Poo at the Powerful
    Any additional comments?
the "war or terror" is a buncha crappola you ask me and this book calls it like it is!
    Eye-rolling, gave up halfway through
Would you try another book from J.M. Porup and/or J.M. Porup?
    Nope.
Would you ever listen to anything by J.M. Porup again?
    Nope.
What didnt you like about J.M. Porups performance?
The t's were super crisp, so any word with a t was clipped and jarring. He was trying to act like a clueless wannabe naive idiot, but he just came across as an asshat.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
I rolled my eyes at just about every line. I have two little kids so I hear about poop, pee, farts, butts, and the rest every single day. I don't care. But this book was just infantile. The constant references to "poo," "pee," and "wee wees" was just too much for me. I have better uses for my time than listening to something that sounds like my 6-year-old wrote it. I had high hopes for the book because I thought the concept was good, but the focus on poop in the middle of the book just made me give up.
    Any additional comments?
    Ugh. Just ugh.
    Like South Park!
If you could sum up The United States of Air in three words, what would they be?
    Really LOL funny!
Which character as performed by J.M. Porup was your favorite?
Fatso. The cheesy over-the-top French accent is so ridiculous I laughed out loud!

    This four-book set includes....
Stuck with a Schmuck (The Stuck with a Series Prequel)
What if you're stuck with a schmuck on Cupid's big day?
    Stuck with a Stiff
The Stuck with a Series is Castle and Beckett gone-country with The Mom Squad, Betty Boop and My Cousin Vinny in the barnyard. But this ain't no ordinary barnyard. There's a lot more than a crazy rooster missing from the chicken coop, a bad ass cow causing a bunch of trouble and a dog looking like a creature out of a storybook. There's a stiff too. A stiff - as in a dead guy - in a snow drift near the chicken coop. Things aren't lookin' too good for Nicky Blane, who owns the farm. He's used to creating fictional stiffs for his best-selling novels, not defending himself from being framed for murder.
    Stuck with a Spell
For Stuck with a Spell - Book 2 in the Series - there's a bit of Bewitched tossed into the mix. Think hex an ex. Nicky Blane, a best-selling author and farmer-in-the-making, doesn't need to look far to find creative inspiration for his novels. His crazy-ass Aunt Liza, a wanna-be witch, lives next door. But this time, she's blown it big-time with a hex on her ex that's gone a wee bit awry. Think graveyards and Voodoo dolls, spell-casting and cauldrons, potions, raw emotions, and more.
    Stuck with Sleigh Bells
What if Santa had a double knee replacement and had to put his BFF Father Time and The Mom Squad's Grams in charge of The Big Red Ride? For Stuck with Sleigh Bells - Book 3 of the Stuck with a Series - and the series' first holiday novella - think Castle and Beckett, The Good Witch and Maxine in Whoville.

    Bad!!!
Why I wasted my time even finishing this set I'll never know.
This was by far the worst book{s} I've ever bought on my Kindle.
The only word I can think of is dumb. Everything about the stories dumb.
I don't know maybe a 10-11 year old might get a giggle from them.
The story lines were so stupid,, just stupid.
While reading these disasters, I wouldn't of been shocked to find out a 15 year old wrote them.
Don't waste your time or money. I wish I could get me money back.
Stuck With a Schmuck had me stuck to my chair
Stuck With a Schmuck introduces us to Samantha Aldredge as she boards a plane to battle it out with her client, Nick Blane. It's Samantha's job to force the famous author to stay on track, finish his edits and meet his deadline. The problem is it's Valentine's Day, and the two have a serious love/hate relationship. Toss in a sassy housekeper named Molly Masterson, a blizzard, and the dead body of Nick's biggest competitor and Stuck With a Schmuck keeps you stuck to your chair until the very end.
    Five Stars
it was good not too long not to short just the right amount for the stories
    a vey fun read!
The "Stuck" series goes from murder to voodoo to witches to Christmas with Santa and Father Time. The main characters writer Nicky Blane and his editor Sam (Samantha) are included in each of the books/stories along with many of their wacky and unusual relatives. There are also characters from some of D. D. Scott's other books. Enjoy...I know I did!
    Highly Recommended
I have loved all of D. D. Scott's other books and series and although this series has been out for awhile some how I missed it but I'm very happy to have found it now.
