Vladimir Lorchenkov tells the story of a group of villagers and their tragicomic efforts, against all odds and at any cost, to emigrate from Moldova, Europe's most impoverished nation, to Italy for work. In this uproarious tale, an Orthodox priest is deserted by his wife for an art-dealing atheist; a mechanic redesigns his tractor for travel by air and sea; thousands of villagers take to the road on a modern-day religious crusade to make it to the promised land of Italy; meanwhile, politicians remain politicians.

Dark Humor Perfectly Captured by Daniel Thomas May
What does Daniel Thomas May bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Daniel Thomas May was absolutely splendid in this narration! He captures the satire, slapstick, and dark humor of the book wonderfully all while keeping the momentum of the story. I was drawn in with his Russian character voices and inflections. His tone and narration kept the story filled with hopefulness throughout such a desperate and absurd adventure.
    Any additional comments?
This book was a funny, sarcastic, quirky, entertaining fairytale of a story! Daniel Thomas May's narration helped to bring to light, what I believe is, the point of the story - finding a better and more fulfilling life through insurmountable challenges and obstacles!
    Funny, interesting listen!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
    Yes, it is hilarious.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The art dealer was an interesting character.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The mechanic working on his tractor was the best part.
    Any additional comments?
    This is a great comedy.
    Couldn't stop listening!!!
What about Daniel Thomas Mays performance did you like?
Daniel Thomas May's warm voice and excellent character voices had the headphones glued to my head. This was really fun to listen to!
An enjoyable story of miserable lives.
If you could sum up The Good Life Elsewhere in three words, what would they be?
    Dark, but funny.
    Any additional comments?
The Good Life Elsewhere takes us on a miserable trek from Moldova to Italy and back again over and over. It's miserable for the Moldovan villagers desperate to emigrate to Italy, but it's a wonderful read for the rest of us. The story finds humor and irony in horrible situations and I was surprised that the comedy translated so well. The villagers' attempts to improve their life, by leaving behind the ones they have, are range from downright stupid ideas to strokes of brilliance in their creativity and in their ingenuity. The stories are incredibly bleak, but the book still instills hope. Daniel Thomas May's characterizations were amazing! For an American narrator to develop such a variety of unique Moldovan voices was very impressive.

    What a listen
Loved this audiobook, the story continues from book one. Poor Molly, she has the worst luck since moving to Blackstone, but she braves on despite the obstacles thrown her way. He r character is quite a complex one and Ms. O'Branagan did quite great build up, same with the secondary characters. You love them or you love to hate them. There is quite a twist with Steve that I didn't expect and we get to meet Robin and he is so loveable, to bad he doesn't stay in her life. I so miss Val, but we get to see him in spirit, remembered by those who loved him. I am waiting for the next book now to see what happens next.
I just love listening to Rebecca Cook and that is how I discovered the Red Hot novels. Ms. Cook is very talented with a myriad of voices to the large cast. Thank you for another great listen!!!

Look out there's a monster coming
Secret dossiers suggest that this spacecraft contains a mad alien that was once worshipped as a god because of its terrible telepathic powers. And that it is even now lying in suspended animation, awaiting its time to rise again and rule the world once more. Danbury's special senses tell him that the best thing to do would be to nuke the creature now before it wreaks havoc on Mankind. But does anyone listen? No!
Porrig has been left something in his uncle's will. It might be a bookshop, it might be a planet, or it might be a doorway into another dimension. And Porrig is worried, because he has learned a great and terrible secret. But will anyone listen to him when he tries to tell them? No!
It's a pity that people rarely listen, because, in this case, had they troubled to do so, the world would have been spared from all the madness and mayhem, the thousands fleeing in terror, the mad monster laying waste to half of London and the dirty great explosion at the end. But then, there wouldn't have been much of a story if they had listened.

We should all be more like WOK BOY (!)
If I had a penny for every time I giggled, sniggered or experienced any form of emotion whilst reading this book, I would have....I think. Rankin has written (another) fantastic peice here. All the characters are great (especially Wok Boy with his ideas agout ladies underwear. ahem) and all come together in the end in a grand finale involving an alien vegetable, Nelson's Column (and indeed all of Trafalgar Sq.), Magic and a bloody big explotion!
The Truth IS Out There (deep under Morningstar Crescent)
Great paranoid romp through the bowels of governmental and alien conspiracies. Why for God's sake is Douglas Adams published in the States and not Rankin. Only the men under Morningstar Crescent know for sure.
Brilliant, Porrig, Ripplington, and Wok-boy are great
Apocalipso took me a while to get into but when the Ministery of Sependery (MoS) Plan to nuke Dilbert Norris (An alien evolved from a vegetable) Things get interesting.
    Terry Pratchett he ain't!
A smile now & then, the odd good turn of phrase, but, see the title.

Hey buddy, I need to tell you my own story since this author lady is always trying to pull a fast one on me. She puts me through the ringer with all these twists and turns. Not a nice gal if you ask me. Let me introduce myself, my name is Spencer Watley and I'm a Lieutenant at the Seattle Police Department. Well, I guess not anymore. You see some Cyber killers did me in and I landed before the gates of heaven. I was knockin' but the door wouldn't open. An angel standin' there told me no way am I going in. What, you must be mistaken I says, what's my room number? I think to myself, here I am a great cop, donno know how many scumbags and lowlifes I put in the slammer. Don't that count for nothin'? The angel wasn't listening, she just told me I was jerk and insensitive to boot. Do you believe that, a jerk? She said I had to go through the J.R.P. if I ever wanted to enter. The J.R.P I asked, what the heck is that? It's the Jerk Redemption Program said the angel. That's non-stop Oprah and Dr. Phil reruns, then she pokes my chest to make her point. "That'll make you nice and sensitive, Jerkwad." I shivered and tried to hold in my lunch at the thought. Can you imagine that? I can't stand all that mushy touchy feely stuff. But the angel had something else up her sleeve. The other option she gave me was, I could help a young kid and his dysfunctional family. Hey, that sounds way better I says. And just as she's sendin' me back down to earth she pulls this zinger on me. I can only go back in the body of my K-9 partner. Well, I just said forget it, I ain't becoming no dog. But the angel wouldn't listen. So here I am a stupid dog. And the teenager I'm trying to help is a smart-mouthed know-it-all puber who's grouchier than I am. You think this is bad, wait till you read the rest, it gets even worse. I dare you to listen to my story. Woof.

K-9 Cop: Case #1 The Dreck Report...
K-9 Cop by Erna Mueller is a refreshing and light hearted story that begins with Seattle police Lieutenant Spencer Watley and his K-9 partner, Pepper. During a chase his luck runs out and criminals get the best of him causing him to lose his life. Upon entering heaven he finds out that his hardened heart disqualifies him for entry through the pearly gates and he is given an assignment that will take him back to earth. His mission is to unite a dysfunctional family and at first he is not motivated by the brokenness of the family, but he is selfish and only wants to succeed in his mission for his own good. There is one snag in the plan; howeverâhe must return to earth in the body of his canine sidekick Pepper. Follow along as this story unveils how the love of a pet can heal the broken hearts and spirits of even the most cynical among us. As Pepper begins to convey his thoughts and feelings it becomes apparent that this is no ordinary dog. He makes both friends and enemies along the way and his attitude toward his mission begins to change. He actually begins to care about someone other than himself and he will stop at nothing to help his human friends. This story is about greed, loyalty, courage, teamwork, and corporate corruption.

    Publisher's Summary:
In his first novel, celebrated humorist Roy Blount Jr. chronicles the life and times of America's first-ever First Husband.
Guy Fox first encountered Clementine on the campus of Dingler College. She was running, stark naked, away from an on-campus protest and the police who were pursuing her. Guy and Clementine's romance wound through turbulent social movements of the '60s and '70s, all the way to Clementine's ascension to the Oval Office. As the nation's very first First Husband, Guy is privy to the surreal intricacies of presidential life, and he sets out to write a light and thoroughly uncontroversial memoir about his relationship with Clementine. But the First Hubby can't help but let some of his more mischievous qualities slip through into his book... The thoroughly charming, First Hubby is an engrossing novel about politics, family, and the art of marriage, even amid the most unusual of circumstances.

    One Star
I tried but couldn't get past the first few pages.
A Study in a Joke Falling Flat.
Let me give you some idea how funny this is.
The President of the United States is giving speech, when a large fish falls out of the sky, lands on his head, and kills him, making his female vice president America's first female president. As for the "First Husband", he's the guy whose picture is in the dictionary next to "whipped."
If you're not laughing, well, it doesn't get any better than that, so you've been warned. In case you missed it: this is truly terrible.
I truly enjoy the genre of the political novel . . .
    . . . but "Advise and Consent" this ain't!
Actually, there was a good bit of humor in this novel, and I enjoyed the (predictable) "skewing" of political opponents.
    BUT . . .
Overall, this is a poorly conceived, poorly laid out, and poorly written novel. The late Isaac Asimov suggested that when one sets out to write a Science Fiction novel, one includes only one "impossibility" (like time travel, faster than light travel, etc.) Although this is a political novel, and not SciFi, I'll submit that the principal remains the same. The notion of a successful third party based almost entirely on far-left women's issues; the notion that such a third party would choose a male Presidential candidate; AND that said newly elected President would die suddenly when hit in the head by a fish, dropped from the sky some hundred+ miles from the sea is "impossible" to the point of silliness. Not even satire can justify the author's sloppiness here.
The female president is, arguably, rather a likable character, as, frankly, is her husband, the erstwhile narrator of the story. But the story (written entirely as a series of diary "retrospectives") moves at an annoyingly slow pace -- and serious issues are literally tackled only in the very last pages.
At the end of the day, this novel ranks higher than Joe Klein's dismal "The Running Mate", but does not rise to the level of former VP Spiro Agnew's "The Canfield Decision" or Robert Serling's "The President's Plane is Missing" much less anything that Allen Drury had to offer.
Good for a long airport layover, or with a few drinks on the beach.

    Simone can't catch a break!
What made the experience of listening to The Cowboy the most enjoyable?
Oh my gosh, this book was funny! Poor Simone, she can't catch a break. Her date with the cowboy is one for the records. Hilarious listening.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The cowboy. You gotta love a quirky man! Yes, he's handsome, but what's he hiding under that big ol' hat? LOL! This book was so dang funny. I laughed until my sides hurt. The narrator knocked it out of the park.
Have you listened to any of Elizabeth Powerss other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, but I'm going to search out her other books. She's got a knack for humor and romance.
Who was the most memorable character of The Cowboy and why?
The scene in the restaurant. It was completely unexpected and one of the funniest scenes I've ever listened to in a book.
    Any additional comments?
Great writing throughout. I enjoyed the characters and story, but most of all, the humor. Well done.
    Freaking HILARIOUS!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
YES! I've already recommended it to my friends. I've never laughed so hard while listening to a book. This audio book was freaking hilarious! The whole scene with the cowboy and his truck--priceless! I don't want to reveal any spoilers, but let's just say that scene was so far-fetched, and yet so realistic, that it had me in stitches. We've all had dates that bad....well, not quite as bad as poor Simone, LOL! Very funny and enjoyable book.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Simone, of course! She's a riot. And her interactions with Austen (AKA "Gray Tumbleweed") were so funny that my husband asked what I was laughing about. I had him listen, and then he borrowed my book to listen to on the way to work. He loved it as much as I did.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The scene with Simone in the truck. I don't want to reveal any spoilers, but there's a moment when she's riding in the truck that is so well written, so funny, that I couldn't stop laughing.

Purvis Driggers is a South Carolina Low Country loser. With little judgment and even less chance for a decent life beyond his parents house, home town, and whatever part-time work he can scrounge up, he s sure he's figured a way out: rob an old man of the rumored millions hidden in his house. But all he finds is the old man dead and the money, if there was any, already gone. Purvis is drawn to the sound of music across the creek. There, he discovers a beautiful woman in a white gown being baptized in the water. Surely Martha, beautiful Martha, will give Purvis the escape he imagines. With the Martha boat come to his rescue, Purvis decides, he ll never have to worry about drowning.
But Martha Umphlett is trapped, too. Married and just as quickly divorced, Martha s been condemned to return to the home she d once escaped. Made to take care of her obese mother, and forced to participate in a baptism she has no interest in whatsoever, Martha, in her own way, is every bit as desperate as Purvis, but far more capable and a good deal more dangerous.
Their paths cross with that of Brother Andrew, a monk at a nearby monastery whose call more and more is not to God, but to nature, and more importantly, to somewhere else. He wanders the swamp to watch birds, practice archery, and meditate, but it becomes clearer and clearer to him that the answers he seeks are not to be found in his monastery, his vow of silence, or the life he has thus far known. But maybe the answer is in the girl he, too, sees being baptized across the creek. Perhaps Martha will make Andrew happy.
Infatuated with Martha, and certain she's the answer to his dreams, Purvis sets out to do whatever is necessary to prove his love, all the while terrified that the FBI will pin the old man's murder on him.
This darkly humorous story wends its way through a web of murder and dismemberment, a twisted love triangle, and a woodland monster known as the Hairy Man.

Great Performance in South Carolina Lowlands Tale
    Any additional comments?
I listened to the Audible version of Purple Jesus by Ron Cooper narrated by Charles Bice. Charles did an admirable job narrating, providing unique voices for all of the characters, and his dialect seemed genuine. The book is touted as a comedy, but I didn't find anything amusing with it. The two main characters are Purvis and Martha who are extremely poor in South Carolina's low country. While their story was Ok, I really didn't enjoy the parts with Brotherin it, which seemed out of place and distracted from the main story. In short, Purple Jesus was uninspired and forgettable.
    Still Pondering It...
Purple Jesus is a uniquely written tale told from the perspective of three people - Purvis, Martha, and Brother Andrew.
The style of the writing was pretty clever, and I found it different to anything I'd read prior. Each main character had a distinct style and voice, and the narrative would cut from one to the other, sometimes repeating series of events, sometimes just overlapping at the end of the prior to the next character's narrative. I found it flowed very well.
Purvis was a character I really found myself liking. I'd put him as "uneducated" rather than an idiot, like he was continually getting involved in deeper thought, or attempting profound discussions, but just didn't have the "book smarts" or audience for the articulation.

A Funny Book for Us Cat Lovers
THE CATS OF SALISBURY ROAD was a really fun audiobook especially for cat people. This was a great cat drama with cool characters. It was humorous and it made me chuckle several times while listening. These cats have awesome personalities. Stan, Leslie, Martin, Hammerhead and others plus a little metaphysical time travel made for a good time. I love when one of the tortoise shells yells "He knows Krav Maga, he's military, man. Run."
I'm glad this is book one and I look forward to more from this series. I like Tom Slemen's writing.
Nicholas Patrella did an outstanding job narrating. His character voices were great. I think he made a super neat book more enjoyable. He was very entertaining and in fact, I'll probably listen to this again.
I also love the cover illustration.

    The Cats
Some funny parts.I just didn't get into it.It wasn't really a book series that I would read after this one.Nicholas Patrella was fine doing narration.I was provided this book free for review by the author, narrator or publisher.
    The Secret Life of Cats
This is a funny take on the life of cats. It wasn't laugh out loud funny, but most cat lovers will appreciate the various cat stereotypes presented, along with the various other creatures who share their world. Think roaches, rats, and dogs...and of course humans. Teens and older children would probably enjoy this audiobook, but there are references to sex that parents might not want presented to younger children. I would probably rate this PG-13.
The narration is good, and Mr.Patrella does an admirable job differentiating his voice for the various cats personified..
I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator.

Yeah, definitely I would love to recommend this audiobook to my friends. And it's because of its action, fun and complete organization. Publisher's Summary:
Chasing the Last Whale is a novel about rage. Elliot Finell - an angry, maimed young man - meets Trey Gillespie, who is even angrier and more crippled in body and soul. They become friends, despite their utterly dissimilar backgrounds, temperaments, and worldviews. Elliot's rage has cost him his health, his relationship with his family, and the love of his life, a moody Southerner with a secret. While navigating his strange friendship with Trey, Elliot tries to heal his damaged body. He finds that despite Trey's negativity, this "evil Okie medicine man" somehow gives Elliot the strength to carry on.
When Trey suffers a crisis, he turns to Elliot with a request. Elliot can't agree to help. In response, Trey commits a desperate act that triggers a memory Elliot has long repressed. Suddenly aware of the truth about himself, Elliot must decide if he will maintain the anger that has become habitual, the main component of his identity. By understanding what has really crippled him, he's finally able to see how it has damaged so many others: his lost love, his family, the beautiful young woman who is his implacable nemesis, his ambiguous British friend, and of course Trey, a nuclear reactor of rage, suffering, and bitterness.
Clarity leaves Elliot faced with the most agonizing choices of his life.
Chasing the Last Whale examines intent and outcome. What constitutes a crime? How does victimhood end? Can mercy be immoral? Is love a choice? Does trauma always destroy? And can almost any subject be made funny?

    Great author
    Great Black Comedy
I wasn't sure if I would like this book. Did I want to read about rage and suicide? It definitely is a departure from the books that I have been reading lately, but I decided to plow ahead.
Main character Elliott has it pretty bad. Living with pain in his legs from a tree house fall as a child, he is angry and depressed. He happens upon Trey, an even more angry and depressed quadriplegic, and the two become unlikely friends. Elliott struggles to come to grips with his own issues while grappling with the incessant pleadings from Trey to help him commit suicide.
Sound lively? Actually, Wictor has infused plenty of humor here. He has the ability to take even the most dreadful moments and hit you with dialogue or descriptions that bring you out of your melancholy. There are plenty of times in the book where we "hear" what Elliott is saying in his head, and then he verbally states the opposite. This battle of internal vs. external brings levity to uncomfortable situations.
Don't worry, there is light at the end of the tunnel in Chasing the Last Whale. While there are no whales here, there is an explanation for the title of the book within its pages (page 177 for those of you who like to peek ahead).
I really liked this book. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking for something different and that enjoys black comedy.
Disclaimer: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest book review.
A great black comedy with a message.

Right from the start I liked the first person narrative voice of this novel. The main character Elliot, has a no nonsense style of speaking that engaged me as a reader.
