March 1934. Revered mystery writer Josephine Tey is traveling from Scotland to London for the final week of her play Richard of Bordeaux, the surprise hit of the season, with pacifist themes that resonate in a world still haunted by war. But joy turns to horror when her arrival coincides with the murder of a young woman she had befriended on the train ride - and Tey is plunged into a mystery as puzzling as any in her own works. Detective Inspector Archie Penrose is convinced that the killing is connected to the play, and that Tey herself is in danger of becoming a victim of her own success. In the aftermath of a second murder, the writer and the policeman must join together to stop a ruthless killer who will apparently stop at nothing.

    Quite good!
This is a tough review to write. I liked it a lot. Truly! But there were a few plot points that had me in tears. I guess emotion is what the author hopes to evoke. This is a good mystery story with many suspects and excellent development. The characters are well written and interesting. I read another review that said the author over-used the word "lover." I tend to agree but the term fit.
Davina Porter is one of my favorite narrators and I loved listening to her read this. I'm looking forward to starting Book 2.
    Loved this book!
I usually find books that take real individuals and make them the protagonist in a mystery series pretentious and ultimately boring...square peg, round hole...but this...this was so good. The story was not overdone, nor were the characters (including Miss Tey) placed in unbelievable situations. The narration was excellent, not overly theatrical. I will definately be listening to more in the series.
This one will grab you by the ears and hold on!
Purchased as Whispersync on the cheap courtesy of BookGorilla.
Set in time not long before WW 2 in Europe, Josephine Tey is the protagonist in this mystery of cruel, calculated murder. I found it as engaging as any good murder mystery and it refused to allow me to go to sleep at a reasonable hour. The writing is solid, smooth, and the plot has some very interesting twists.
Davina Porter gives an excellent performance with no undue dramaticism.
I agree with Nicola Upson, Josephine Tay was extraordinary.
Author Elizabeth Mackintosh, who wrote novels as "Josephine Tay" and plays as "Gordon Daviot" was both an exceptional talent and a fascinating woman. That Nicola Upson has been clever enough to actually use Tay as her main character was all I needed to know to take a chance on, "An Expert in Murder," and I'm glad I did. Across class and social constructs Upson presents fully formed female characters who share with the reader/listener more than just the plot of the story. "An Expert in Murder" is about women, war and the men who come home. Tay's "Brat Farrar" and "A a Daughter in Time" are masterworks which appear time and time again on lists of top mystery novels and well they should be. Upson isn't Tay but "An Expert in Murder" brings us along on an intricate tale, well told, centered around a woman we all know better for having read Upson. Tay was a woman at the top of her profession. Upson gives us a glimpse as to why.

Nina Borg, a Red Cross nurse, wife, and mother of two, is trying to live a quiet life. The last thing her husband wants is for her to go running off on another dangerous mission to help illegal refugees. But when Nina's estranged friend, Karin, leaves her a key to a public locker in the Copenhagen train station, and begs her to take care of its contents, Nina gets suckered into her most dangerous case yet.
Because inside the suitcase is a three-year-old boy: naked and drugged, but alive. Nina's natural instinct is to rescue the boy, but she knows the situation is risky. Is the boy a victim of child trafficking? Can he be turned over to authorities, or will they only return him to whoever sold him? In an increasingly desperate trek across Denmark, Nina tries to figure out who the boy is, where he belongs, and who exactly is hunting him down. When Karin is discovered brutally murdered, Nina realizes that her life and the boy's are in jeopardy, too.

    Nice story set in Denmark
STORY (mystery) - This books starts off quickly. A young boy has been kidnapped, drugged and put in a suitcase which has been stuffed in a locker in a train station. Nina, the main character, tries to find who he is so that he can be returned safely home. The boy's mother is desperately trying to find who's taken him and why. The story rocks along as Nina and the mother (working separately) travel around the Copenhagen area following clues, until the final scenes where everything finally all comes together.
Some reviewers have commented that Nina is stupid, but I don't feel that common sense is thrown out the window in this story any more than most fiction. While this wasn't the most exciting mystery I've ever read or listened to, I was never bored and was entertained throughout.
PERFORMANCE - Katherine Kellgren is my favorite female narrator. Her performances are usually so awesome that I save my five-star ratings almost exclusively for her. This time, however, she just gets a four. I don't have any complaints about her performance. It just wasn't one of her more stellar ones.
OVERALL - This is Book 1 of the series, but it stands alone. There's no sex, but there's violence and some foul language. Recommended for mature adults.
    Excellent Story
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
    Yes, it's well-written and suspenseful.
What did you like best about this story?
    The whole concept.

Posing as a tourist, Emily makes her way to China with the job of protecting a CIA treasure.
    Members Reviews:
    Delightful!
In this sixth adventure of Mrs. Pollifax, she is sent by Mr.Carstairs, her CIA boss, on a tour of the People's Republic of China with the objective of locating a particular man in a particular barber shop in a warren of alleyways outside the walls of a historic Chinese city. Once she finds the man, she is to attempt to get information from him about the exact location of a particular work camp where dissidents are held.
Written in 1983, this book deals with China in a period of very tense relations between the US and China, when the Chinese government kept an iron fist over the Chinese people, and foreign tourism was tightly restricted. As a result, a large part of Mrs. P's mission was to get away from the tour long enough to locate the man in question, get the information from him, and get back to the tour group without being caught in any suspicious behavior. Then she was supposed to hand the information over to another member of her tour group and her mission was finished. Of course, Emily Pollifax can never simply do her job and withdraw -- she will always want to help any person who could use assistance. And so she gets more deeply involved than was intended.
One of the best parts of Mrs. Pollifax stories is not the mission she is sent on, but the people she encounters and becomes friends with. In this book, the members of her tour group are a varied bunch of Americans, and there is a lot of personal emotion going on in the group. Mrs. P becomes personally involved with several of the group, advising young people about relationships, and not-so-young people about life in general. She forms an emotional attachment to the young American agent she was sent to help, and as a result becomes more emotionally involved than in some other adventures.
Emily Pollifax is such a delightful, amusing and caring little old lady that the books written about her are warm, funny, suspenseful and heartwarming all at the same time. They always provide a lovely escape from the everyday lives we lead.
As usual, Barbara Rosenblat is amazing in narration, providing Emily with the absolutely perfect sweet little old lady voice while also providing spot-on portrayals of Americans fvrom various regions of the country and of Chinese characters, both male and female. If you see Mrs. P books read by someone else, avoid them -- only Rosenblat will do!
    HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
    Love this series
I thoroughly enjoy this series especially with B. Rosenblat as the narrator. She captures the characters and atmosphere beautifully.
    Where have you been?
I cannot believe I have not read the "Mrs Pollifax books! It is a Genre I have been reading for years?
I believe this is the last or near the last book in the series. Nothing like working my way backward. That being the case, these books are stand alone. Never was there a place that questions arose of what Was being alluded to. Traveling through China was as if you were there. The Grandeur, dust and heat of the inland, next to the empty opulent hotel lobbies with guards everywhere. The guarded way the people phrased every sentence definitely showed the fear and control yet remaining. The characters were interesting, an amalgam of travelers and 3 are spies.

Something more dangerous...and unexplainable. Dumb
    What a dumb book.
The writing was riddled with inappropriate literary references and even a few misused words.
The premise, an FBI special unit comprised of agents with the ability to see ghosts, is strange, but whatever. I thought it would be fun. It was just dumb.
The female characters were all fluttery and dependent on the strong, decisive male characters.
The sex scenes were gratuitous, completely unnecessary to develop either the story or the characters.
The police procedural aspects were poorly conceived and executed.
    The ending was predictable.
Why did I listen to the end? Two reasons. The narrator, Luke Daniels was pretty good. He is the reason I gave this title an overall two stars instead of one. The other reason is that I'm a compulsive reader and a book has to be abysmal for me to stop before the end.
If you like ghost stories, you might like this. If you like police procedurals, save your money.
    Enjoyable
Enjoyable but not rivitting. A look into the past and an insight into the crimes of Jack the Ripper
    Blatantly commercially driven and banal
Would you ever listen to anything by Heather Graham again?
This was my first book by Graham. The book has a somewhat interesting intrigue and started out okay. It then devolved into a hardly held together mix of ghosts, murder mystery, romance, celebrities and satanist cults from Victorian England. I would guess themes selected by careful marketing study of some book-buying subgroup of the market. It would take a master writer to make something sensible out of that list of preselected selling points, and Graham is not it. Banal dialogue, blatant holes in the plot and unbelievable characters that change when it suits the writer, rather than when it would fit their psychology. Lessons learned: marketing should not decide the contents of books. I really hope the selected audience for this book sees through this thin soup of a book. AND I will avoid Heather Graham in the future.
What character would you cut from Sacred Evil?
The characters start out okay, but change in ways that just don't fit. I mean; the cop who doesn't believe in ghosts accepts to work with a state-financed group of mediums - because "everything that might help the case is good"?! He is also a workoholic that never sleeps, but somehow manages to have bulging muscles to attract the female protagonist? And she majored in film studies a few years back, but now works as a full time medium for the FBI? Okay, it might be I expect too much of a book that is crafted merely to give a few cheap, entertaining chills to selected audiences.

    The wait is over!
I have been waiting for David Rosenfelt's next Andy Carpenter series release for almost a year now! To me, Grover Gardner IS Andy Carpenter. I could not imagine another narrator for this character! I absolutely love this series and am completely hooked! I highly recommend these books to everyone. By accident, I started in the middle with "Dog Tags". However, it was kind of fun to go back to "Bury The Lead" and see how it all started! It has it all: suspense, drama, compassion, romance and a witty humor that keeps me wanting more. Be careful...once you start...you just can't stop! Mr. Rosenfelt...I'm ready for the next one!
    Can't get enough Andy Carpenter....
Although I've been a member of Audible for several years and have listened to well over 100 books, the Andy Carpenter series is my absolute favorite. The story lines are great but what brings Andy to life is Grover Gardner. His narration of this series is dead on and I can't imagine anyone else doing it. The only problem with the series however is I can't quit listening and before I know it the book is over leaving a void in my literary life until the next one comes out. If I could offer some advice to Mr. Rosenfelt, it would be to write quicker and get me more Andy Carpenter. I would highly recommend this series of books to anyone and everyone.
Andy Carpenter, excellent lawyer and sleuth
Andy Carpenter books are just plain fun. Andy is funny, and has so much interesting self-talk going on in his head (which you get to hear in the book). You also hear quite a bit about Tara, Andy's golden retriever, a plus for dog lovers.
In this installment of the Andy Carpenter series, Andy and his team take on a client who has been accused of locking 27 people in an apartment building and then setting fire to the apartment building. Seems like a lost cause, but somehow Andy and his team figure things out and get a good resolution as always. Great book, can't wait for the next one!
    Another good one.
David Rosenfelt never disappoints with his books about Tara and the rest of the gang. This is another good one. It is such an enjoyable, fun read. The narrator is excellent, the sarcasm is fun. Keep them coming.
    Another Fun Read
This was another fun novel by David Rosenfelt. The humor he includes in his writing just puts a huge smile on my face with every chapter. I swear it feels like Andy Carpenter is one of my good friends and I can't wait for every new book. The storyline kept me guessing and the characters excellent.

More than 20 New York Times best-selling authors team up to create a first-rate serial novel - a collaboration that combines the skills of America's greatest storytellers to produce a gripping, spellbinding mystery.
"The lineup of writers who have contributed to this mystery is akin to the Murderers' Row of the 1927 New York Yankees. There is not a weak spot in the bunch." David Baldacci, from the Introduction
Alexander McCall Smith. Sandra Brown. Faye Kellerman. J.A. Jance. Jeffery Deaver. Kathy Reichs. Lisa Scottoline. Jeff Lindsay. These are only a handful of the names that make up the all-star lineup of authors behind No Rest for the Dead, a tale of vengeance, greed, and love that flows seamlessly, in the words of David Baldacci, "as it passes from one creator's mind to the next."
When Christopher Thomas, a ruthless curator at San Francisco's McFall Art Museum, is murdered and his decaying body is found in an iron maiden in a Berlin museum, his wife, Rosemary, is the primary suspect, and she is tried, convicted and executed. Ten years later, Jon Nunn, the detective who cracked the case, is convinced that the wrong person was put to death. In the years since the case was closed, he's discovered a web of deceit and betrayal surrounding the Thomases that could implicate any number of people in the crime. With the help of the dead woman's friend, he plans to gather everyone who was there the night Christopher died and finally uncover the truth, suspect by suspect. Solving this case may be Nunn's last chance for redemption but the shadowy forces behind Christopher's death will stop at nothing to silence the past forever.

    Not as good as expected
I was so excited to download a real who-dunnit by some of the greatest authors ever but... I don't know. It was good, but not as good as I had expected. I never really felt a significant connection to any of the charachters. It felt choppy, and not that surprising at the end. Not bad for a summer listen, but there's better out there for sure!
    Good book/bad recording!
The book is interesting and definitely worth a listen. The narrators do a fine job, and the plot moves forward fairly seamlessly considering each chapter is written by a different writer.

But when Barclays crusade stalls and a Russian drug dealer turns up dead, she stands accused of murder, and Sloane is her chosen defender. Amid the swirling media frenzy, in his first criminal case, Sloane finds himself once again in harms way, while mounting evidence suggests that Barclay is a woman with many secrets - and may not be quite as innocent as she seems.
With his signature fast-paced, page-turning action and exhilarating plot twists, Robert Dugoni once again proves why hes so often been named the heir to Grishams literary throne.

    Great Addition To The Series
A drug dealer is set free by a judge because he finds the evidence inadmissible. Which in turn takes on a whole new meaning. He ends up dead after his release. A woman is charged with his murder and the dark secrets start to surface. Reid, the accused, hires Sloane to defend her of the charges. She charms her way into his life and they start seeing more of each other, regularly. But things are not all as they seem. Things start to fall into place as the investigation and the trial begins. Certain things come to light. Things Reid has said and the way she seems unphased by the events that aren't in her favor, Sloane starts to think something is wrong. If you like a good deception story line and deceit along with it, this is the book for you. If you have listened to any of this author's books you will not be disappointed..
Dan John Miller was outstanding with the delivery of the story
    Outstanding Legal Thriller
This is an outstanding legal thriller that I read based on a recommendation from author Diana Gabaldon. The novel starts off very slowly, introducing a plethora of characters.
Initially, the story proved to be very confusing and I almost gave up, but forged ahead based on the recommendation. Gradually, I realized my confusion stemmed from the fact that this book is in the middle of the series, each story building on the prior. The remedy proved to be rereading each early encounter until I became familiar with the various characters.
The story is very complex and with many twists and turns. I guarantee you won't guess the murderer until the very end, even though all the clues were there.
I liked this book so much that I am now going back and reading the rest of the series.
    Keeps you guessing.
I love the back and forth of "who did it". Another great listen of the ups & downs for David Sloane.
    Going After The Drug Dealer
Great story with a twisted ending. I am really getting to like this author.

    Publisher's Summary:
Harlan Coben has risen to the top of best-seller lists worldwide, attracting voracious audiences for his peerless novels of domestic suspense as well as those featuring his fan-favorite sports agent, Myron Bolitar. Now in Live Wire, he offers a knock-your-socks-off novel that will electrify all his fans: Myrons family takes center stage.
Myron Bolitar has always dreamed about the voluptuous femme fatale walking into his office and asking for help. The woman standing in his doorway has killer curves all right: Shes eight months pregnant, which kind of ruins the fantasy. Former tennis star Suzze T and her rock star husband, Lex, are both clients, and over the years Myron has negotiated his share of contracts for the power pair. But now Lex has disappeared and a very pregnant Suzze is in tears, fearing the online rumors questioning the babys paternity have driven away the man she swears is the childs father.
For Myron, questions of fatherhood couldnt hit closer to home, as his dad, Al, clings to life; the brother who abandoned them all years ago is in trouble; and Myrons teenage nephew needs an authority figure. Myron is soon forced to confront deep secrets in Suzzes past; his familys mortality - and before Live Wire is over, his own.

    The narrator is important
This audio book is not narrated by our favorite Jonathan Marosz, but it is still well done. Some reviewers in the past panned this audio book due to the change, but this was not fair. We all like the familiarity of characters that have in a way been developed through their voices. A change can throw us off. Stephen Weber, however does a good job. In fact, he narrated another Myron Bolitar book: Long Lost. Although I still relate more to Jonathan's voice for the characters (like Winn, Fat Cindy, Little Pocahontas), Live Wire is still worth the listen.
    good
I can't resist Wynn and Myron and the rest of the crew but it was sad and not as much fun because of it. Still a must listen but darn does life really have to move on, even in books?
Steven Weber Makes This Wire... Live!
Okay, Steven Weber's turned this Coben into a major production. There is an entire ensemble cast, each with a personal presence. Even if this wasn't Myron Bolitar at his best, the novel's worth every moment of Weber-listening-time.
BUT WAIT... this search for Myron's brother is Myron Bolitar at his best. Open an antique RR pocket watch... Those parts don't work as well together as Myron, his parents, Big Cindy, Win and Esperanza mesh again in Live Wire...
Okay, I'm a Coben and Bolitar groupie... But I've listened to eight of Myron's adventures, never read one. Why do that when Steven Weber can imagine the characters far better than me?
    A real downer
First off....I love the Myron Bolitar books and eagerly awaited this one. But what a downer. The humor one expects in a Bolitar tale was greatly lacking and the ending left me with a "What?????" I think this must be the swan song for this character or that Mr. Coben is just simlpy tired of this series.

    Not her best work
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
The narrator was pretty bad. She had two voices so all the characters ended up sounding like one of the two voices so it got a bit confusing at times. Also, while most of the story was interesting, if not slightly reminiscent of some of the authors other works, the big disappointment was the ending. It seemed like the author just got tired of writing and rushed the ending without tying everything up and showing how the different threads tied together.
    Unusual is right
What can I say, all Cornwell's books read or listen well. The series is a great series and well worth the listen/read.

    Serendipity
Synchronicity. I was reading this book, about the execution of a black man in Virginia, when Oklahoma death row inmate Clayton Lockett's botched execution hit the news. Kay Scarpetta, in the novel, solves the crime and saves the day. Where's my next Scarpetta book?

    If you like Longmire...
You will like this series. It is similar to Longmire in many ways, but has more family involvement. It definitely keeps your interest and you find yourself becoming more invested in getting to know the family and hoping for the best for all it's members.
I will eventually work my way through this series. I am glad that I took a chance.
    Good listen
Solid story with twists. Good presentation. Keeps you wanting more. Diverse personalities. Will read more of the series.
Trees, ships, families, and greed in Minnesota
PURGATORY RIDGE is the third installment of the Cork O'Conner mysteries. Though no longer the sheriff of Aurora, Minnesota, when the local lumber mill is bombed, resulting in the death of a local Native American tribesman, Cork is asked to help in the investigation. Many possibilities for suspects eventually evolve as environmentalists and the local tribes are protesting the lumbering of a sacred stand of old growth trees called the "Old Grandfathers". Then the lumber mill-owner's wife and son, along with Cork's wife and son , are kidnapped with a ransom demand for 2 million dollars.
Suspense builds with the addition of another suspect, the only survivor of a sunken ship from a number of years ago, who has been mourning the death of his brother during that sinking. He believes the mill owner's wife's family is responsible for the sinking by sabotaging the ship for the insurance money. With the building of suspects and clues developing into a serious case, the conclusion is a complete surprise.
Krueger's mysteries are enhanced by the cultural differences between the Native Americans and the whites, with Cork being mixed blood, and his wife as the lawyer for the tribe. There are also marital issues between Cork and his wife, as they have come together again, after both strayed with other partners. They have three children, two of whom now help Cork run their restaurant. These many and varied issues greatly add to the interest of Krueger's books. The atmosphere of the Minnesota surrounds is also a character in itself, building suspense with the wild weather, and many land formations. Excellent continuation of the Cork O'Conner series!
Another Great Mystery, #3, with Cork O'Connor
This mystery, the third in the series, stays true to the story line of ex-sheriff, Cork O'Connor standing up against evil and injustice on Iron Lake. The history of the native Indians is interwoven, and as in the first two books, his wife Jo, is an attorney who represents the Indians. The locals want Cork to run for sheriff again . . . which isn't decided in book three. The story takes twists and turns, which are unexpected and keeps you listening. My husband and I have listened to the first three in the series together while taking road trips to visit our kids.
