    Subtitle: A Cotton Malone Novel
    Author: Steve Berry
    Narrator: Scott Brick
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 13 hrs and 32 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-01-09
    Publisher: Random House Audio

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Former Justice Department operative Cotton Malone isn't looking for trouble when it comes knocking at his Copenhagen bookshop. Actually, it breaks and enters in the form of an American Secret Service agent with a pair of assassins on his heels. Malone has his doubts about the anxious young man, but narrowly surviving a ferocious firefight convinces him to follow his unexpected new ally.
Their first stop is the secluded estate of Malone's good friend, Henrik Thorvaldsen. The wily Danish tycoon has uncovered the insidious plans of the Paris Club, a cabal of multimillionaires bent on manipulating the global economy. Only by matching wits with a terrorist-for-hire, foiling a catastrophic attack, and plunging into a desperate hunt for Napoleon's legendary lost treasure can Malone hope to avert international financial anarchy.
But Thorvaldsen's real objective is much more personal: to avenge the murder of his son by the larcenous aristocrat at the heart of the conspiracy. Thorvaldsen's vendetta places Malone in an impossible quandary - one that forces him to choose between friend and country, past and present. Starting in Denmark, moving to England, and ending up in the storied streets and cathedrals of Paris, Malone plays a breathless game of duplicity and death, all to claim a prize of untold value. But at what cost?
    Critic Reviews:
"All the Berry hallmarks are here: scale, scope, sweep, history - plus breathless second-by-second suspense. I love this guy." (Lee Child)

    Excellent novel
This is perhaps Berry's best effort in the Cotton Malone series. Thrilling from the get go, most of the story takes place in France during the present day with a story tie-in to the age of Napoleon Bonaparte. Cotton is put in the position of having to support one series friend and betraying the other series friend. The brunt of the story is the usual treasure chase, but in this outing, it is the strength of the characters that shines through. Berry's writing in this series entry is top notch.
    It's not about the narrator.
I don't understand all the negativity. I enjoyed the book. Scott Brick read this like he does everything else I've heard him do. I guess you either like him or not. I know a narrator can make or break a book. I had some difficulty in the first third of the story, but got into it after that. Maybe the problem was SB narration but feel there was just too much "setup". If You like Scott Brick's narration style, and a decent mystery, you will enjoy this one.
    Not Suitable for Audio
The rapid switching every several paragraphs among parallel but related parts of the story make it at times incomprehensible for audio. Besides, the story was weak and foolish and the mulitple accents spilled over across different characters.
    Historically loaded, stagnant plot
This book was a thorough letdown. While the story was packed with endless historical references, the characters we have come to know in Malone and Thorvaldsen were like strangers in Berry's latest effort.
The story lines changed with such abruptness that the listener needs a moment to figure out what is happening. This was a tale that took forever to go nowhere.
    DISAPPOINTING
I am a hugh fan of Steve Berry and have been waiting for the release of this book as my Christmas treat. Very disappointed.

    Spoiler Alert
I've enjoyed all the books in this series so far. Unfortunately, I read "Chad's" review and one of the major plot twists is revealed. Skip that review, if having part of the ending revealed is not your cup of 'Tea' (pun intended)! Otherwise, I enjoyed this book as much as the others in the series.
If you LOVE Sookie, you'll love Aurora...
Would you consider the audio edition of A Fool and His Honey to be better than the print version?
I have never read the actual books... But I have listened to all the books in this series..
What was one of the most memorable moments of A Fool and His Honey?
I couldn't pick just one. I think the stories, in all of this series are delightful. I fell in love with Aurora and she is very reminiscent of Sookie Stackhouse. It's like reading a Sookie novel without the supernatural aspect.
What about Therese Plummers performance did you like?
I thought she did very well with the characters and I appreciate that Charlaine Harris knows how important it is to stick with the same narrator, if they are good. She was good. She had the characters down, and gave them the perfect southern touch they needed.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Aurora Teagarden, Unluckiest Girl EVER! OrSookie....Off Steroids... :) or Aurora Teagarden... Amateur detective, who's actually better than the real police... Or....Poor Aurora! Won't people stop dying around her? lolI don't know... But those all represent her character... :D
    Any additional comments?
I know this series is over (for many years) as well as the Southern Vampire Mysteries... But I want MORE...MORE AND MORE! Charlaine Harris really could add to Aurora's life...kind of pick up where she left off in the last book. I'd love to read them. I'd love to see her brought back to life... :DCharlaine Harris has a way of writing that makes you feel good inside, like comfort food. There aren't many writers that can make me feel like that. It's like putting on a favorite pair of slippers. Her stories just make me feel comfortable, safe and warm and able to actually relax for a while. I think she writes in a way that makes people feel like they can identify with the characters. I really do love her style of writing.I DO wish she would NOT have written the Sookie Stackhouse companion.

As he navigates this ecological thriller with hardboiled wit and the biggest outboard motor he can get his hands on, Taylor reveals himself as one of the last of the white-hatted good guys in a very toxic world
    Critic Reviews:
"The characters are entertaining, if broadly drawn, and the rip-roaring conclusion will make a dandy denouement in the movie rendition." (Publishers Weekly)
"Stephenson's irreverent, facetious, esprit-filled voice make this near-future tale a joy to read." (Amazon.com review)

    Love that dirty water!
I love this book, and this audio production is great! Funny and scary and engrossing. One little bitty caveat: a couple words are not pronounced in the true local Boston fashion. For example, 'route' is pronounced to rhyme with 'stout,' rather than sounding like 'root,' the way we say it here. And the town of 'Natick' is pronounced to rhyme with 'static,' rather than as a slant rhyme for 'jaded.' Since I grew up near Natick, this kind of makes me itch every time I hear it. And the townie accents are close, but not perfect. But that's minor. This is a great performance of a great book, and I would love to hear more by Ax Norman. And when I look out my back window at Boston Harbor -hahhhbuh as it sounds here, I wish I could see S.T. in his zode.
    A must read for environmentalists
I've read most of Neal Stephensons books now after being introduced to "Snow Crash" by a friend. This is one of Neal's earlier books, but if you like his works then this is a definite. The whole book is written first person.. almost a prose. An intelligent, stimulating read (listen) without the pseudo intellectualism we get from many writers these days. I wish I discovered this author a long time ago.
    Intelligent and Gonzo
I first encountered Neal Stephenson when I read Snowcrash (highly recommended)and I was impressed. I then read Cryptonomicon (highly recommended) and am a fan for life. Zodiac is an earlier work, slightly less well written but nonetheless very entertaining. Stephenon's science background shows throughout and makes his story all the more engrossing. As is always the case with Stephenson the story is a mixture of clever and intelligent plot with Gonzo elements. He is sometimes a little gross but that's just part of the fun.
The narrator does a good job and I found him easy to listen to.
    very funny, yet gripping.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
yes. I enjoyed the story; the jokes.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
yes, it did. I found it interesting. I don't have an aversion to chemistry, so i found it interesting and 'educational'; the story itself is interesting and unpredictable.
    Which scene was your favorite?
any that contains a sarcastic remark by the main character.

    Agatha always makes me smile
The books are light listening. There is a plot. There is a story. But it is the character of Agatha Raisin that makes me keep coming back to these books.
    Enjoyed the book and narrator
It didn't take me long to get used to a different narrator, and I really enjoyed this book. The plot moves right along, and all of the favorite characters from the series are featured.
    Easy-listening Cozy
I really enjoy cozy mysteries, and have listened to many (though not all) of the Agatha Raisin series. This one stays true to form - Agatha is her usual brusque and bossy self. She does seem to have gained a degree of maturity and self-awareness over the course of the series, which is nice (especially since she is in her fifties).
The story was good; sort of predictable, and I did figure out "who-dunnit" before the climax, but that's fine. I enjoy these stories for their comfortable setting, familiar characters, and general lack of gruesome violence.
One problem that I had, and that sort of gave a bit of the plot away, was the narrator. She was mostly pretty good, actually - but she got a few things wrong; namely, doing a French accent for a character who we only "discover" later can speak French. So - basically, we, the listener, knew of this character's French connection prior to the other characters in the novel.
It was a good listen, though, and worth the credit if you are into British cozies.
not up to Lady Rose quality
I adore Beaton/Chesney's campy Edwardian Lady Rose "cozies" and even enjoy Hamish MacBeth in small doses -- but I found this (my first Agatha Raisin) didn't have the same quality of humour, narrative or setting of either of the other series. While I was disappointed in this listen, I have enough faith in the author to try another -- so if, like me, you are new to Agatha Raisin, you might want to start elsewhere in the series.
    Love Agatha but with Donada
I have had so much enjoyment from Agatha Raisin, her escapades and foibles. But I never knew how much Donada Peter's narration added to the experience. Whoever made the decision to change narrators - I hope they read this! When you have listened to a series with one voice that has done such a fantastic job, it is really difficult not to be distracted by an edition with new voices for the familiar characters. I was distracted and disappointed - therefore I gave this a 3.

Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is summoned to deliver an evening lecture in the U.S. Capitol. Within minutes of his arrival, the night takes a bizarre turn. A disturbing object - artfully encoded with five ancient symbols - is discovered in the Capitol Building. The object is an ancient invitation, meant to usher its recipient into a long-lost world of hidden esoteric wisdom. And when Langdon's mentor Peter Solomon - prominent Mason and philanthropist - is kidnapped, Langdon's only hope of saving Peter is to accept this invitation and follow wherever it leads him. Langdon finds himself plunged into a clandestine world of Masonic secrets, hidden history, and never-before-seen locations...all of which seem to be dragging him toward a single, inconceivable truth.
The Lost Symbol is exactly what Dan Brown's fans have been waiting for...his most thrilling novel yet.
    Critic Reviews:
"[I]mpossible to put down....Mr. Brown was writing sensational visual scenarios long before his books became movie material. This time he again enlivens his story with amazing imagery....Thanks to him, picture postcards of the capital's most famous monuments will never be the same....In the end it is Mr. Brown's sweet optimism, even more than Langdon's sleuthing and explicating, that may amaze his readers most." (The New York Times)
"Thrilling, entertaining....Robert Langdon goes for another roller-coaster ride - this time in a hunt for a Masonic treasure in Washington, D.C." (Los Angeles Times)

A Great Mix of History, Philosophy and Faith!
The Lost Symbol is a good read with enormous potential for a GREAT historical mystery thriller to follow the previous movies, DiVinci Code and Angels and Demons. This time Dan Brown interweaves an investigative storyline tying obscure historical facts associated with our Nation and the Free Mason perspectives. Once again, I was reminded that the excitement is in the journey, as there are truly no endings, but only new beginnings of understanding. The underlying message of the book, far from controversial, has re-iterated a message that has historically permeated in many spiritual perceptions of Mans relationship to GOD for some time. Brown brings this message front and center to chip away at modern mainstream consciousness offering philosophical food for thought. I recommend this book if you enjoy a mix of history, philosophy and faith. -D
    Fast Paced
This is the 4th or 5th book I have read of Dan Brown's. I have like them all. They are speedy and hard to put down. Lots of action and plenty of technology to keep me interested. I love the detail and knowledge he puts in his books. I hope to keep reading his books for years to come.
    Good listen, until the end
My husband and I were facing an 18 hour car trip and needed a good book to keep us awake. This did just that, and kept us interested and engaged. However, once the mysteries started to unravel, I have to admit I was disappointed with how it all ended. But, it was still worth the time.
    Lost Symbol by Dan Brown
I have enjoyed several previous Dan Brown novels. The Lost Symbol was a big disappointment. It was unrealistic beyond any suspension of disbelief, disjointed, & generally poorly written. The characters were not well done & unconvincing.

    Critic Reviews:
    >"Spenser is Boston's answer to James Bond - irreverent, witty, worldy. His first-person recital of his detective work makes for fast, amusing reading." (The Pittsburgh Press)
    Members Reviews:
Good start to a great series!
I've gone years without attempting the Spenser series. I decided to take up the task of trying to read all the books in the series in order. This book is a great start. Without spoiling anything, you get a sense of Spenser's humor while getting a great mini mystery. Yes the book is unabridged and great for a quick trip but the reader is wear it counts. At first his narration comes off as dull but you start to enjoy his interpretation of the character. The story is nothing revolutionary but the plus side is that you can tell Parker respects the likes of Chandler, Hammett etc...which adds to the feel of the novel.
Overall the book is a solid 4 out of 5 stars. Not the best, not the worst. If you're a completest like me then read it, if not still read it because it's the introduction of Spenser who is one of the greats in detective fiction.
The First Spenser Novel: Still One of the Best.
Spenser's on campus in 1973 when one investigation leads to his being involved in a bogus murder charge against a coed as her only advocate and protector. The introductory novel of the series was a breath of fresh air at the time, and this one stands up as an excellent example of Spenser's best. It's also the one pre Susan Spenser novel and that alone would elevate it. This one however stands on it's own; the portrait of Terri's wealthy parents is the snapshot of the era. As are the professor and Terri's wannabe badass boyfriend. It's not a Spenser that's recognizable to those more familiar with his later works socially as he has sex with a mother and daughter in less than 24 hours. Iris Milford is another great character and it's interesting to watch Spenser and Quirk stand toe-to-toe ready to go. Even with a subpar narrator this one is a five star listen.
    Trip Down Memory Lane
Ahh, 1973. The good old days BC (before cell phones), when the left-wingers and not the right-wingers were the ones calling for the overthrow of the government, and ostentatious consumerism was still considered tacky. A college secretary wears a purple suede garment that Spenser notes is ???too short to be a skirt and too long to be a belt.??? She has paired it with a shiny red shirt with wide lapels. I think I may have owned both those items once upon a time, although if I ever wore them together I???ve repressed the occasion.
In this First Chronicle of Spenser, the erudite but self-educated boxer-turned-cop-turned-tough-PI takes on effete academia at the height of the hell-no-we-won???t-go era. I enjoyed it, but it really is a period piece. I found it interesting to compare ???Godwulf??? with later Spenser books in which college administrations play a significant role??????Playmates,??? ???Hush Money,??? and ???Small Vices??? come immediately to mind, and I think there are others.

    Fun Like Always
Precious Ramotswe is one of my very favorite woman characters among a small handful. Being a guy I usually love gritty, hard boiled, raw, action detective stories. I like my mysteries complex and I like the thrills to keep me glued to my ipod. The series of books in the Number One Ladies Detective collection are totally the opposite of all this.
There is never violence. The mysteries are small and sometimes almost nonexistent. There is no action. Us "tough" guys would call this a "ladies novel" except that they are precious, magic, and life affirming.
Everything I shouldn't like about this series is what makes them special, a joy, and pleasure. The reader is awesome which adds extra magic.
What makes the story work is the atmosphere, the unique story idea, the simple mysteries of a simple life, a fresh perspective, and a set of characters you'll think of as part of your family.
I only use 4 stars instead of 5 because there was not a great a mystery in this one as in some although the story is still great fun. I suggest anyone that has not been reading the series start at the beginning to really be able to enjoy them all fully. The one fault of find with most of the series after the first is the lack of mysteries in them. Most of the series from about the 3rd or 4th one are mainly about the personal views and challenges of the main characters. While these are fun they are much more enjoyable when the detectives are also detecting. If you have enjoyed the series so far then don't miss this one.
    Excellent
As always, go into these novels with the understanding that you need to sit back, relax, and calm down. These are not thrillers; the action is slow. I read thrillers as well and they have their rewards, but the rewards of this series are completely different. Most books in the series don't even hint at a plot in the first few chapters. The draws here are the characters and setting, which are both wonderfully drawn and suprisingly compelling. The rewards are scattered throughout the novels (most of which come from the insights of the main character), with the biggest of these coming near the end as all the loose ends are tied up and all the events come to their conclusions, nearly always in satisfying - if unexpected - ways.
One other comment: I've read one book in the series and listened to the other 9. Lisette Lecat is one of the best narrators I've ever heard. I found myself hearing her voice in my head when I read the print book. After that I went back to audio... her voice and presentation are definitely and enhancement, a rare quality.
Mr. McCall Smith does it again!
I simply can not get enough of the characters in this series. I wish it were a soap opera that I could watch everyday! Mma Makutsi gets funnier with each book.

    Maisie Dobbs Series - Fabulous
The series is excellent. If you are a fan of social history (post WWI England, women's history, Depression Era) in a fictional setting, Winspears books are very well researched, without being teachy or preachy. The reader has a pleasant manner, with voices well differentiated.
    Best in series!
Please read the books in order of series to appreciate this book the most. The main character Maisie Dobbs is a bright, intelligent, independent career woman in 1931-32. Over the years she has evolved and recovered from the many scars of her war experience. This chapter in her life exposes the atrocities of chemical warfare, and remnants from WWI. It also exposes the dreary economy of post war England where former soldiers got no pensions, are homeless and ill from their war experience. It is a desperate time for many, and the pain is recorded in the pages. Maisie's employee Billy has problems of his own with a wife suffering from depression. Clearly JW did her research on early methods of depression treatment. The plot line is suspenseful as Maisie chases to find a killer and is intriguing at the same time. A psychological thriller with social history intertwined. Great detail and growth of characters. The narration is fitting and well done, once again Orlagh Cassidy does a great job.
    darker Dobbs
This Maisie Dobbs instalment is far from an English "cozy"; parts gave me the psychological shivers. Even though that's not an element I seek in a mystery, this listen still rates highly by me, as do all the novels in the series.
If you were bothered by elements like Maisie's dowsing in "Incomplete Revenge," this is a more rational Miss Dobbs. Also, she delves less into her own psyche than in the past instalments but observes the social devastation around her even more acutely.
This series has sent me to books on the post WWI era in Britain (both the politics and social history), and I am amazed at how accurately Winspeare weaves history into her narrative.

Nicholas Spencer, charismatic head of the medical research company Gen-stone, involved in the development of an anticancer vaccine, suddenly disappears. His private plane crashes en route to Puerto Rico, but his body is not found. Early results of the vaccine seemed highly promising. Yet, coinciding with Nicholas Spencer's disappearance comes news that the FDA is denying approval. Then follows the shocking revelation that Spencer had looted Gen-stone of huge sums of money - including the lifetime savings of people who had risked every penny they had.
Marcia "Carley" DeCarlo, the 32-year-old columnist for the Wall Street Weekly, is assigned to cover the story. Carley is the stepsister of Spencer's wife, Lynn, an aggressive PR woman and socialite, whom she dislikes and distrusts.
The day after news of her husband's disappearance rocks the financial and medical world, Lynn attends a meeting of the stockholders of Gen-stone, flaunting expensive clothing and jewelry. Accused of having participated in the scam, she appears indifferent to the anger and despair of the people attending, among them a man whose child has cancer and who is now about to lose his home. That night, she narrowly escapes death when her mansion in Bedford, New York, is set on fire. She turns to Carley, begging her to use her investigative skills to prove that she was not her husband's accomplice. As Carley proceeds with her investigation, she is confronted by seemingly impenetrable questions: Is Nicholas Spencer dead or in hiding? Was he guilty or set up? Why the sudden reversal in medical opinion of the vaccine from recognition to condemnation?
And as the facts begin to unfold, she becomes the target of a dangerous group involved in a sinister and fraudulent scheme. The Second Time Around is Mary Higgins Clark at he...

    One of Her Bests!!
I was literally in the dark until the last few minutes!! Very well written and performed by Jan Maxwell. I highly recommend this book!
    Another success
Enjoyed the subject matter. As usual, Jan Maxwell performed beautifully. I love listening to Mary Higgins Clark books because I don't dread the content. Mary has romance without sex, and you're in anticipation about what's going to happen next. There's no obscene language and the heroines always have good moral fiber. I've been reading her books for over 20 years and will continue to read them as long as she keeps writing clean and classy stories.
    Excellent!!!
This book kept my interest from start to finish and was one of Mary Higgins Clark's best books and as usual Jan Maxwell was excellent!!
    Better than ever
Would you listen to The Second Time Around again? Why?
Probably not, that's not my habit for any of the books.
What other book might you compare The Second Time Around to and why?
    Well written, nicely plotted story.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, great story that moved quickly.

    as good as ever
really good one..those in death books are great!
Susan Ericksen brings these stories to life
I had read the whole series over time and thoroughly enjoyed each and every one. However when I started listening to audio books I found it difficult to lose myself in the story...until I found Susan Ericksen reading the JD Robb series. She has made each character a special personality. It's almost as if I have never read these books before. I'm enjoying Peabody and MacNabb tremendously. I actually laugh out loud at some of the conversations between them as well as some of Eve's comments. This is a terrific mystery series. There is 'edge of your seat' murder plots mixed with family humor and wonderful guest characters. I eagerly look forward to the next in the series.
    Short story
I love all the Eve Dallas books. I wish that this one had been longer.
    1/2 Books Not So Good
I don't appreciate the 1/2 books, the ones 1/2 the usual size - they seem short, abrupt, crammed.
    I love this series!
If you could sum up Ritual In Death in three words, what would they be?
This book is a great listen, they all are!
    Any additional comments?
I love this narrator, she is by far my favourite!
