"Wacky and delightful characters...sure to please the palate of any cozy fan." (Publishers Weekly)

    Cute and Fun
If you could sum up Sugar Cookie Murder in three words, what would they be?
    Cute, fun, and yummy
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
This story did keep me on the edge of my seat as much as a cozy mystery could. It was slightly predictable, but the reasons were not.
Which character as performed by Suzanne Toren was your favorite?
I liked Hannah as always. Hannah and her sister.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I was a little upset at Mike and how he treated Hannah in this book. He was gruff and a little possessive it seemed.
    Any additional comments?
This was not my favorite in the series at all. It was cute and fun, but not the best. There were a couple of things I could just not forgive. I would elaborate, but it would ruin a few plotlines. Overall though, a fun quick read!
    Fun at the potluck.
I don't like how Mike acted in this one but Hannah still rescues the day. Definitely worth the read.
Love the books not a fan of the narrator
I wish Joanne would try out new narrators. I love her books so much but may have to stick with reading them versus listening. This narrator is very cumbersome and uninteresting.
Another great book in the series.
Love the development of each character in the series. The acting is wonderful with each character clearly different in sound and personality through out the book and the series. It is hard to stop listening. And I feel a part of their community. I wonder if Hannah will be able to choose from her two suiters. I like them both for her. Can't wait to start the next story.
    Another charming Fluke story
What did you love best about Sugar Cookie Murder?
It is a nice simple story that one fit between heavier stories.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Sugar Cookie Murder?
Like that this one was a closed environment.
Which character as performed by Suzanne Toren was your favorite?
    Hannah
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    Has it's funny points
    Any additional comments?
This author is one that I use when I just want a little light reading. The character are a lot of fun as they develop. Having grown up in that area, I can relate to many parts of the book. Try the recipies!!! When I worked as a bookseller and talked about this book to my customers, very often they would talk about the excellent results they had while using the recipies. There sleuthing is very simple, and usually solve the case in the first half of the book, but the surrounding story keep the book moving along to the end.

Andrea Camilleri's novels starring Inspector Montalbano have become an international sensation in eight languages. This funny and fast-paced Sicilian thriller will be a delicious discovery for mystery aficionados and fiction lovers alike.
    Translated by Stephen Sartarelli.
    Critic Reviews:
"[This] savagely funny police procedural prove[s] that sardonic laughter is a sound that translates ever so smoothly into English." (New York Times Book Review) "Subtle, sardonic, and molto simpatico: Montalbano is the Latin re-creation of Philip Marlowe, working in a place that manages to be both more and less civilized than Chandler's Los Angeles." (Kirkus Reviews) "Hailing from the land of Umberto Eco and La Cosa Nostra, Montalbano can discuss a pointy-headed book like Western Attitudes Towards Death as unflinchingly as he can pore over crime-scene snuff photos. He throws together an extemporaneous lunch...as gracefully as he dodges advances from attractive women." (Los Angeles Times)
    Members Reviews:
    A good beginning
I backtracked to this one because I started with Terra Cotta Dog and loved it so utterly that I had to know Montalbano from the beginning. This first one is definitely a delight, but Terracotta is much better, much funnier. Still, I'm glad I came back to the start. Buyers: Know that it only gets better. My only complaint about this one is that it's SO SHORT! Barely an evening by the fire. That can be a mercy when you're reading someone awful, but sad when it's as good as this one.
AUDIO: The reader is an excellent choice. He's not totally perfect, but close enough. He has a good sense of, and is a good fit for, this wonderful character.
    A new favorite detective!
This is the first of the Inspector Montalbano novels and it is a good place to start. It is an excellent book which is more character than plot-driven, and although the mystery of the second novel (the Terra-Cotta Dog) is better, I'd still suggest starting with this book for general character introductions. Oddly, an earlier reviewer commented that the characters were flimsy and I cannot disagree more. Montalbano is not a hard-boiled American style detective, so perhaps if you are expecting Sam Spade you'll be disappointed. But Montalbano is a strong character, unique, worthy of a Dexter's Morse or Allingham's Campion, and I would recommend him to anyone who likes an excellent mystery with a non-American flavor for a change.
Inspector Montalbano is very particular about food, but it is part of who the man is, and unless you are starving and can't find something to eat, these parts of the stories are excellent atmosphere and are NOT repetitive, as I think he rarely eats the same thing twice, and may inspire you to try some new things. He has other quirks as well, but he develops and grows in the four that I have read and listened to so far. Once you get a quarter into this first story, the Inspector's character will grab you and although mystery is intriguing, it will be the personality of Inspector Montalbano and the aura of small-town Sicily which I think you will find the most interesting.

    Publisher's Summary:
Working outside the law and willing to do what the police can't, Prescott hunts the killer, an elusive adversary who is as smart, as methodical, as deadly as he is. The only way to conduct this pursuit is to goad the killer into believing that he must killRoy Prescott. It's a contest fought from one end of the country to the other, and both men understand that, when it's over, only one of them will be left alive.
    Critic Reviews:
"Once Prescott takes the job, the novel shifts into a gear so high that putting the book aside is no longer an option....A bravura performance from one of the few crime writers who never lets you down." (Los Angeles Times)
"Brilliant....A bona fide nail-biter....Thomas Perry's cerebral thrillers unfold methodically, in extremely sharp focus. His attention to detail is so intense that it generates its own brand of quiet suspense." (The New York Times)
"Perry is the best suspense writer in the business....Pursuit is relentless, filled with twists and turns, that rare page-turner that keeps one reading late into the night to finish." (Boston Globe)
    Members Reviews:
    Mr. Perry continues to amaze.
This is a stand-alone novel. Hard to follow a first act like the Butcher's Boy. The villain here is unambiguously evil. His name is Varney. He will kill anyone for any amount. There are two good guys: Milliken is a cop, Prescott is an ex-cop who teaches law-enforcement. Prescott does things which are marginally legal but effective. Thirteen people are killed in a restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky. Prescott is called in. In the end the mouse finally cannot escape. The last four or five chapters will have you biting your fingernails, I guarantee it. Although you can predict the outcome, nonetheless the book is riveting. Prescott is trying to match minds with Varney, trying to match locations with him, and setting traps for the mouse. Prescott tries to anticipate where Varney will go and how he thinks. Varney goes to extremes to disguise himself. A separate trap is set for Varney, involving a woman named May.
Tom Weiner matches skills with Mr. Perry, which is saying something indeed. His pace is fast when it should be, and tantalizing when it needs to be. Some readers will recognize locations in Buffalo and in LA from other books. There is a bit less humor here than in prior works, but Mr. Perry has set the bar so high for himself that we hardly notice that. I loved this book. I am now in Mr. Perry's clutches. I will go anywhere he wants to take me. I hope that you can jump on the train, too.
    Great book
This book is full of details that lead to an incredible ending. The author's ability to describe each character's logic, emotions, and skillset is profound.
    I recommend listening to this.
    Feral Altruism = Crackling Story
To paraphrase Dante: conscience judges the sins of the the cold-blooded and the sins of the warm-hearted through different lenses. In 'Pursuit', Thomas Perry allows complex characters to explain themselves, then he smashes one against the other.
I think it was General MacArthur who said, "If you find yourself in a fair fight You didn't plan your mission properly." 'Pursuit' is about grim planning men, hunting one another.

    Title: Faceless Killers
    Subtitle: A Kurt Wallander Mystery
    Author: Henning Mankell
    Narrator: Dick Hill
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 57 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1274 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
It was a crime of senseless violence. On a cold night in a remote Swedish farmhouse, an elderly farmer was bludgeoned to death, his wife left to die with a noose around her neck. As if this didn't present enough problems for Ystad police inspector Kurt Wallander, the dying woman's last word, his only tangible clue, were foreign. If publicized, they could be the match that would inflame Sweden's already smoldering anti-immigrant sentiments.
With this case - unlike the situation with his ex-wife, his estranged daughter, or the young prosecutor who has piqued his interest - Wallander feels he has a problem he can handle. He quickly becomes obsessed with solving the crime before the already tense situation explodes, though it will require all of his talent to do so.
    Critic Reviews:
"An exquisite novel of mesmerizing depth and suspense." (Los Angeles Times)
"Mankell's work mixes compelling procedural details with strong social consciousness....A superior novel and a harbinger of great things to come." (Booklist)
"[A] brilliant U.S. debut....The author goes well beyond the narrow police procedural in creating a full-bodied Wallender and in casting light on the refugee problem in contemporary Swedish society." (Library Journal)
    Members Reviews:
    A new favorite detective series!
After listening to a more current Kurt Wallander mystery, I bought this with the intent to start this series from the beginning. I have been going through "Harry Bosch withdrawl" and Wallander has become a great addition as a very enjoyable detective series for me. I find Wallender different from Bosch; he is a little easier to relate to as a real person with real life issues and daily problems. He does not solve this crime brilliantly, but rather with hard work, capable help from his colleagues (which added even more interesting characters to get to know,) trial and error, but, of course, with a true talent as a detective.
The mystery was great, and had no "first book" feel to it. Some writers truly evolve in their writing skills, to the point that the earlier books are not as well written as the later ones, but none of that here. Menkell started with a bang! The plot was complex, interesting, and suspenseful. I really wanted to keep listening to it, even when I had to turn it off.
Unlike many detective mysteries, where the reader is introduced to potential killers in some fashion before the end of the book, Menkell kept us as much in the dark as to the killer(s)' identitiy as Wallander, which gave me the feeling that I was working right along with Wallander as to what to do next, and really brought me into the story.
I like Dick Hill, and I enjoyed him here. I prefer a narrator who puts some drama into the reading of a book, yet I did not think he went over the top. I found him very easy to listen to, and to also keep the voices of the characters distinct from one another. All-in-all it was very enjoyable, authentic, and I definitely plan to read more of the Wallander series.
    Something About Swedish Fiction
Maybe it is the long winters, but there is nothing "uplifting" about any of the Swedish authors I have listened to. However, what they all have in common is a brutal reality. There are no super heros or fancy CSI solutions. Crime is solved by grinding it out and a little luck.

    Title: Cross
    Author: James Patterson

    Release date: 10-27-06
    Publisher: Hachette Audio

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
    The most terrifying Cross ever....
Years later, Alex leaves the FBI to work as a full-time psychologist. His life finally feels like it's in order...until Cross's former partner, John Sampson, gives him a chilling phone call. Sampson is tracking a Georgetown serial rapist whose brutal modus operandi includes threatening his victims with terrifying photos. Now Cross and Sampson need the help of the rape victims to stop the predator, but the women refuse to talk.
    The most emotional Cross ever....
When the case triggers a connection to his wife's death, Alex may finally have a chance to catch the killer. Is this a chance for justice at long last? Or the culminating scene in his own deadly obsession?
From the man USA Today has called the "master of the genre", Cross is the high-velocity thriller James Patterson's fans have waited years for.
    Members Reviews:
    I'm cross too
Not as disappointed as the other reviewer because I have read so many Alex Cross novels I do know the characters (i.e. he never exlains how little Alex came to be which will be confusing to a newbie particularly in the context of the storyline about Maria), but I have to agree, this was disappointing. I have been a big Paterson fan for a while, but this was stilted and predictable. The thrill is gone.
    Latest Alex Cross Book
While I agree with the previous reviewer that this is a book that assumes that the listeners/readers have already read prior Alex Cross books, I must say that it was a great read for me, since I did read all of the other 11 or 12 Alex Cross books and have enjoyed his character since the beginning. His life with Nana Mama and the kids, the tragic death of his first wife, his love life, all of it is fun to keep up with and each new book gives just more of a glimpse into the Cross household. Of course his simple life is complicated by the nasty villians who he must track down. If you haven't listened to any James Patterson books, you might want to start with an earlier Alex Cross book, like Jack and Jill, Rosese are Red, Mary Mary, Along Came a Spider, Cat and Mouse or one of the others. Regaardless, I must give this book 5 stars. Well written, good suspense, and great plot.
    Sick villain
This was my first time reading Patterson, and I was not impressed. His villain ("the Butcher") was disgusting. Patterson went into too much detail about the Butcher's rapes, etc. Also uses the "F" word excessively (as opposed to a more tasteful author such as John Grisham who has enough mastery of the language to describe what he wants to without being profane).
Bad author. Dull story. Lame ending.
    Just boring
I was so disappointed in this novel, having been a fan of Patterson for many years. He does a poor job of developing the characters. I grew tired of the goody goody Alex Cross. What I disliked the most in this and other of Patterson's books is how Cross doesn't really investigate or do anything out of the ordinary to find the killer. He just happens upon the information. I was very disappointed.
    I waited for this?
First let me say Kudos to the job the narrators did considering the awful material. I have waited a long time for this book and have read the entire Alex Cross series - this book was neither terrifying nor emotional. It is a true let down.

    Pleasant Listen
A very nice listen, a goog mystery for drve time.
Please get the rest of the series in audible!
Love Daisy. Why only four of the books available? And such a big gap between book three and book ten or so?
    Daisy rides again!
These books are lightweight and very enjoyable. Ms Dunn does a fabulous job writing about the music in this book. The regular characters, Daisy, the heroine, Lucy, her BFF, Alec, the dashing Inspector, and his policemen are well rounded. The new characters for the mystery are interesting and you actually care about them. I did figure out "whodunnit" but that didn't take away from my enjoyment. Bernadette Dunne did a nice job with the many voices. I saw a comment that didn't care for her voices but they suited the story, at least for me.
    Light, easy and entertaining
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend this audiobook because the story is entertaining, the narrator has captured the essence of the story and the characters.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Requiem for a Mezzo?
I really enjoyed when Daisy and Alec went out for dinner.
Which character as performed by Bernadette Dunne was your favorite?
Of course the main character, Daisy Dalrymple and Alec Fletcher are the usual favorites but I do like Daisys roommate Lucy.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I would have loved to sit and listening to the whole story but unfortunately I could not.
    Any additional comments?
I would like to see all of the Daisy Dalrymple books in audio.
    Couldn't listen to narrator
I enjoy this series when reading silently, but I couldn't listen to even one hour of this narrator. She acted out the characters' voices, making them whispery and simpering, and I think if she had just read it straight in her natural voice, it might have been ok. I hate to write something negative, but I wish I had known about this. Maybe, if it didn't make the site too slow, we could try out 4 min. or so of a book before buying??

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
The twists begin when Trish Klein, the only offspring of Robicheaux's Vietnam-era buddy, starts passing marked hundred-dollar bills in local casinos. Is she a good kid gone bad? A victim's child seeking revenge? A promiscuous beauty seducing everyone good within her grasp? And can Robicheaux make peace with his friend's murder in time to figure out how a local mobster fits into all the schemes and death? Will his life be whole again when it has been shattered by so much tragedy?
In Pegasus Descending, James Lee Burke explores psyches as much as evidence, and tries to make sense of human behavior as well as his characters' crimes. Richly atmospheric, frightening in its sudden violence, and replete with the sort of puzzles only the best crime fiction creates, Burke's latest novel is an unforgettable roller coaster of passion, surprise, and regret.
    Critic Reviews:
"The novel is steeped in complex personality studies, lyrical prose, and richly drawn depictions of Mr. Burke's beloved bayou country." (The New York Times)
"With peerless naturalistic descriptions and lush, metaphysical imagery, Burke creates another challenging morality play for his flawed, everyman hero." (Publishers Weekly)
"Everything that makes this series so compelling - the elegiac, seductively lyrical prose; the complex character of Robicheaux; the lovingly evoked bayou setting - is here in abundance....The fact remains that no serious reader of hard-boiled fiction should ever miss a moment of Dave Robicheaux in action." (Booklist)
    Members Reviews:
    Breathtaking
I have been a James Lee Burke fan for years, having read every single one of his books once and sometimes twice, or more. This is the first book I have listened to and at the beginning I had great fears because Dave was such a close friend.
Will Patton does an absolutely amazing job of narrating Pegasus Descending. Though I had a different voice for Dave (a good friend is from Baton Rouge and I was using that deeper more accented voice in my head), Patton very soon won me over.
I have always been in love with the beauty of the language that Burke uses. "...sunset like the gilt edge on a Bible." He summons such detailed images to your mind like no one else can do. There is a small scene where Robichaux is drunk and he's watching the man next to him in a bar peel an egg. I was in that bar, smelling the smells, seeing the little chip of egg shell on the man's finger. Maybe I was tipsy too. It's a small, but amazing scene.
The story is one of Burke's best. Robichaux has been settled down in his heart by his new wife and this gives him a new maturity and grace. It's a quite wonderful change to see. The characters are terrifically written and Will Patton does a most excellent job, an award-winning job with the voice of Monarch. He's captured the winningness of his personality as well as the evil and danger that lurks there.
I would guess that there is a not a person who reads that would not love this book.
If you haven't read the Robichaux series from start to finish, you have such a treat ahead for you. I wish I could have them surgically removed from my brain so that I could again read them for the first time.
I think there are 15 books in this series and Robichaux is FAR from becoming a tired, re-formulated hero (such as Lucas Davenport). I hope Mr.

    Critic Reviews:

"Coben writes a fast-moving narrative in a style witty enough to keep pace without straining too hard." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    "electronic" narration? Slow-paced story
I have enjoyed every Harlan Coben book - except this one. Many times during the listening, it sounded like the narration was "electronic" - i.e., as if changes were made in the narration via a machine. It would be hard to believe that the narrator really spoke that way! Also, his voice is so deep that he is difficult to understand. As for the plot, I found it very slow - the book dragged until the end, and as another reviewer stated, the end was rushed. Slow, slow, slow and then--------fast and finished! This book, while written a number of years ago, has me questioning if I want to try another Harlan Coben.
My Second Myron Bolitar. NOT MY LAST!
HINT... start with the first in this series and work forward. Yeah, this stands on its own bottom, but it is part of engaging character development. Soooo.... This is a terrific adventure, but do yourself a favor... lookup they Myron Bolitar series and start at the beginning. And when you get to Fade Away... buy it... and enjoy. BTW... Jonathan Maorsz is a treat actors... Uh-huh... Know the grammar problem in that last statement... meant it. Marosz brings the entire cast to life. Keeps 'em all straight... So I could. Thanks.
    I love ME
Coben's use of the double entendre, albeit a tad over the top, actually works! I find his sense of humor to be just right. Like a lot of recent authors, I found his ending to be a bit rushed; but rate this one as one of his best yet. More Myron!
Harlan Coben - Master of Suspense
I love Harlan Coben - he is one of my favorite authors always delivering a new page turner.
I especially appreciate his dry sense of humor carrying us thru the pages.
In this book Myron is hired to find a missing basketball star. He navigates thru a maze of lies and deceit and a surprise ending will leave your head spinning.
Narrated by Jonathan Marosz, who is one of my favorite narrators. He expertly delivers the audio version of the book to us.
    another winner!
Ahhhhh Myron and Win at it again. so many questions answered. I never know who the bad guy is until the end. meanwhile......Jessica? seriously? I stand with Esperanza. go away Jessica.

One man knows what happened that night. Adopting the alias of a killer caught 80 years before, he has already contacted the press. His terms are clear: He wants money, he wants power, he wants celebrity. And if he doesn't get what he wants, Rainie will be gone for good.
Sometimes, no matter how much you love someone, it's still not enough.
As the clock winds down on a terrifying deadline, Pierce plunges headlong into the most desperate hunt of his life, into the shattering search for a killer, a lethal truth, and for the love of his life, who may forever be, gone.

    In defense of Anna Fields!
There are some reviews here that are so far off the mark in connection with the Narrator I wonder if they refer to a different version! Anna Fields was one of the best narrators around. She had a rich contralto voice, a wonderful touch with irony, gave all her characters real depth, with nuanced performances of women, and some of the best voices for men I've heard, and her performances of children are fantastic. Your heart breaks for Dougie in this story. I look for books narrated by her all the time on Audible. She is sorely missed. If you like good mystery/suspense story this is worth a credit, ignore the 'poor narrator' reviews.
    2 credits !!!!
Why is this book 2 credits?.... It is only a 10hour unabridged title. Not worth it.
    Two-star narration
I honestly can't tell you what I think of the content of the book, b/c for the entire listen, I was distracted by the narration. The narrator's voice is simply harsh and unpleasant -- that is, her "normal" reading voice. And then there are her male voices -- simply atrocious. She sounds like grade school kids trying to sound like men. Interestingly, the only sound she did well (eerily on-target)was a mechanical voice.
I hate to be so negative, but I had to force myself to listen to this book since I didn't want to waste the credit. The story earns 3 stars, best I can recall.
    Good listen
Pretty darn good little mystery-thriller -- Gardner is usually a good bet for a good "read" . Also Anna Fields does a wonderful job of narration but it's a little creepy listening to her read the part about a basement flooding (just too sad)
    Hard to listen to
Since I already paid for it at some time in the future I intend to finish it. I only made it about an hr into the story before I found myself another book, Anna Fields just kills the whole story. Her voice doesn't change depending on who is speaking so I keep finding myself lost on what character is saying what.
