    Excellent Read
Richard Montanari has a talent for exceptional character developement. His writing flows like poetry. Although the plot is not unique... "Cops look for weirdo", I could not stop listening till the very end because of the extremely well written story. The reader adds to excellent entertainment by brilliantly "acting" the story rather than just reading it. If you like insite into characters as well as good prose, don't miss this one.
    Spellbinding!
This is perhaps my favorite audiobook so far. It has a complex plot, likeable characters, and offers great insight into the mind of a serial killer. The last two hours are unequaled in suspense. It's been a long time since I've been frightened by a book; this one does the job in aces. Also, once again, Scott Brick rules! It's as if he is living the book as he reads it. The Rosary Girls couldn't be better.
    Pure crime/thriller melodrama!
I am now on book #4 in this series, and I tend to be stingy with stars. First off, let's take care of the category. Some reviewers cry "not believable". Sure, but these books are not about solving crimes with dogged police work. Again...these are not police procedurals. Yes, they have crimes at their core, but only to hang the many characters, the twisted plot, the parallel story lines, and the suspense on. Think Charlie Huston meets David Koontz (some clues even come to our heroes psychically through Byrne's battered brain). Few of us would complain about the lack of "believability" in many of the movies we see; it's a movie--pure fantasy.
Yes, there are the cliches of Jessica Balzano, tough female detective who boxes, and her tough but much damaged (natch) older male partner Kevin Byrne, both of whose main vulnerabilies are their children, and their good hearts. In each book so far, Balzano and Byrne, regularly find themselves (or their friends and loved ones) at great physical risk, and in very tight life-threatening spots which require miraculously well-timed rescues. And yes, as a number of reviewers have pointed out, Montanari's writing seems to be of the school of "Why use two or three words when an entire paragraph, or better yet, a long interior monologue will do--we can just suspend the intense action for a few minutes".

  • Chosen Prey Audiobook by John Sandford

    Title: Chosen Prey
    Author: John Sandford
    Narrator: Richard Ferrone
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 17 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-19-04
    Publisher: Penguin Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 1308 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Already faced with a welter of confusion in his personal life, Deputy Chief Lucas Davenport decides to take this case himself, hoping that some straightforward police work will clear his head, but as the trail begins to take some unexpected turns, it soon becomes clear that nothing is straightforward about this killer. The man is learning as he goes, Lucas realizes, taking great strides forward with each murder. He is becoming a monster, and Lucas may have no choice but to walk right into his lair.
Filled with the rich characterization and detail that distinguish all of Sandford's work, Chosen Prey is a masterpiece of suspense.
    Critic Reviews:
"Ferrone's light style is perfect for the banter between Minneapolis homicide investigator Lucas Davenport and his colleagues, and he has no problem dialing up creepiness when voicing James Qatar, art teacher by day and remorseless killer, dubbed 'The Gravedigger', by night. Sandford's story, twelfth in his long-running Prey series, is taut and involving, and Ferrone serves it well." (AudioFile)
    Members Reviews:
    a great Sandford thriller
I just never tire of this author -- the suspense always get me. I think "Winter Prey" is the best of the Prey series, but this one leads you an unmerry chase all the way. The reader knows what is going on, but has to watch the great Lucas Davenport put it all together. A bit different from some of the other Prey novels, and another notch in Sandford's belt.
    Realistic presentation of police probllems
This is a sad but highly realistic look both at the mind of a serial killer, and at the problems police have in trying to obtain definitive evidence to convict the killer. The murderer in this case is intelligent, meticulous and careful to avoid leaving real clues about his crimes. A very gripping, unhappy tale.
    Good Sandford
Okay, so this thing is predictable early on. If the Phillies played the Lancaster Barnstormers, well the winner'd be predictable, but both the major league talent and even the minor league enthusiasm would be great to watch. Sanford's reeeeeeely major league (for example see my review of 'Saturn Run'). That's the way with Lucas Davenort novels, they're a whirled of fun. They're as much about the trip as the destination.
Davenport's not a super-Sherlock. He follows breadcrumbs of facts, frequently guesses wrong, and bumps into things. Here again he follows, misuses, and bumps. But doggedly... doggedly. Don't you like that in the guy?
Well I do, and I like Sanford's rarely disappointing craftsmanship. Here's what professional commercial writing looks like, and through Ferrone's voice, what it sounds like. The villain's a foul funny guy who deserves a comeuppance - Totally!
    You know it'll come, right?
    Or will it?
    Fine stuff...
    Good Sanford...
    Nuff said.
Chosen Prey Was Not For Me.....
I've enjoyed several of the Davenport series but not all... this one was not for me. I thought the story was "kinda" strange. A pervert moves from a hobby of creating sexy pictures of women into murdering them. For reasons that's not easily put into words, I found the whole story dislikeable and didn't' find it entertaining at all. It was not just one thing, it was just about everything. The story never became compelling to me...

    Wow! Get this one!
It took me a while to get through this book. It was so good that I could do nothing else but listen! No driving, no knitting, no nothin'! As soon as I was fininshed, I started it again. The narrator is very talented. Each character gets a very unique voice. Very richly developed plot and characters. I really felt for them...and was on the edge of my seat. Twisting and turning right along with them.
    Exciting page-turner
Excellent writing and read well by the narrator, this book is full of twists and turns and you'll make up reasons to keep the headphones on, if you have to. The characters are nicely developed and sympathetic. The story is compelling and gets more exciting as you go. Wish this author had more unabridged books on tape.
    One of her best.
Exciting from beginning to end. Great character development. The best of the books by her to which I have listened. They were all very good, but this is her best.
The Message is Loud and Clear
I have never read a Lisa Gardner book before and the Survivor's Club was on my list as a highly recommended read. I normally don't listen to crime dramas; however, I really enjoyed the suspense in this fast-paced novel. The description of the rapes really brings home the fact of what an act of violence rape is (especially in this story) -- the author handled the subject matter with incredible understanding and empathy, yet getting her point across about the true nature of that hideous crime. The characters are well developed and it kept me listening raptly to all of the twists and turns that one loves in a good crime mystery. I plan on reading her other books now.
Another Awesome Edge-of-the-Seat Book from Gardner
Just finished listening to both unabridged books available by Lisa Gardner, wish you had more!! Can't believe I haven't discovered her before now. She writes interesting characters and stories and great puzzles.

    Good Read
I enjoyed this book immensely. I like the narrator and have no problem with the way she does male voices. I've listened to her many times and I'm used to her style of reading. I find it easy to get lost in the book & characters with this narrator.
The book itself is suspenseful all the way to the very end. As to Jane being the stereotype of 'women in a male world' - so what? I felt it was an honest characterization of a strong woman doing what is considered a man's job. I find it too much on the mark to ridicule the book based on that.
The self-psycho analysis of the 'surgeon' was excellent and very mind provoking. Really makes you start to think about the sort of things and people who do this sort of thing.
I have not read the first book "The Surgeon" and doubt if I do so while this one is fresh on my mind, but I will probably pick it up in the future. I also now plan to pick up some more of Gerritsen's books as I like her style of writing.
Both The Author and The Narrator are Perfect
First let me say that I am addicted to modern mysteries with intelligent female detectives, medical examiners, contract killers, ditch diggers, surgeons, anything but frumpy housewives and good mommies with perfect kids. So when Tess Gerritsen "gave birth" to the Rizzolli and Isles series I almost inhaled the first book in one sitting through my ears. Then I realized that the voice reading it was so hypnotic, expressive, engaged in the story that this was part of the reason I could not take my ears off the pages. Anna Fields is one of the most talented readers that Audible has. She can read an IRS information pamphlet on tax exemptions for 501 c3 organizations and make it interesting. Although Gerritsen's plots and excellent writing can survive other readers, even the less than mediocre ones, the combination of Anna Fields and the characters of Gerritsen's suspense novels is unbeatable. The Apprentice has so many twists and turns it's like a subway tunnel built by a crazed carnival ride inventor. But she did not fool me one bit with her ending. There will be more to come and a return of the least likable characters of The Apprentice so listen carefully, once, twice, maybe three times so you will be prepared for the sequels.
    Read "The Surgeon" First
If I could, I would give this 3 1/2 stars.

Best Holmes since Arthur Conan Doyle
This is my favorite detective series; the writing is superb and the narrator is perfect. This is currently the only one available on Audible, however, and although the book can stand on its own as a complete story, it is a richer experience to listen to them in chronological order. Assuming Audible will make the rest of the series available soon, the order is: Beekeeper's Apprentice, O Jerusalem, Monstrous Regiment of Women, A Book of Mary, The Moor, and Justice Hall last. (This is not the order in which they were written, but the order in which they take place.)
    Well done
I enjoy King's extension of the Holmes story very much. This happens to be one of my favorites of the series, revisiting as it does two characters I loved from an earlier novel, Ali and Mahmoud. Other reviewers complain that the book is uneventful, though perhaps they are misremembering Holmes stories as proceeding like James Bond novels. King doesn't rush the story's progression, certainly, but most readers will enjoy the slow building of tension and the sudden revelation of relationships, motives, and crime. The excerpts from the diary of a young soldier are fascinating. As for one reviewer's dismissal of the story as "unbelievable" because two Englishmen pass as Arabs, I wonder why they would bother with a spy/detective novel at all. Besides, there are plenty of people in the world who speak more than one language fluently, and who are at home in more than one culture.
My only quibble with this otherwise excellent performance was the narrator's rendition of a Canadian accent. One character in the novel is supposed to be from Toronto, but sounded like a speaker from Tennessee trying to imitate the speech of Manhattan.
Not one of the best Mary Russell books
I'm a fan of the series, but this book was a disappointment.
    It's too long.
It's poorly edited. A central character's army rank wobbles throughout between 2nd lieutenant (correct) and sublieutenant (wrong).
The charm of the series is the tension of the relationship between Russell and Holmes, and on this case they spend little time together.
The plot is weak. Russell achieves her two breakthroughs by having the author hand them to her on a plate (chance personal encounters, stumbling over evidence in a chest) instead of working them out.
Worse still, a crucial plot point hangs on a factual inaccuracy, which I can't reveal without spoiling the story.
The narrator does her best with the longueurs. Other reviews say she isn't much help, but it's hard to see what else she could have done.
    Really well done!
I first read this book without having read the first 5, so I thought it was well done, but perhaps not great.

I hate to pay for abridged books!!!
Please provide both. I understand some people enjoy abridged books, but please give us a choice.
Solid book but the Audible details are wrong
    Any additional comments?
This is a solid book and a solid performance but my issue lies in wondering who actually narrated and whether or not this is an abridged edition. Audible lists The Next Accident as abridged and performed by Kate Burton (a favorite of mine who read Intensity) but the book is nearly 11 hours long with chapter breaks. I could not tell that it was abridged nor did it say that it was abridged or unabridged. What I do know for sure is that Kate Burton is not the reader; the reader is Anna Fields, who does read the unabridged CD version of the book. The narrator says that the book was read by Anna Fields at the end and I compared the voice with the next book in the series, which is read by Fields, and the voice is the same. I will try and bring this to Audible's; it was not bothersome to me in this particular incident but I think listeners should know what they are paying for.
    Good Read
Enjoyed this introduction to Quincy, Rainey and Kim. Always enjoy a Lisa Gardner book.
    Lisa Gardner's FBI Profiler series
The FBI profiler series is an older Lisa Gardner series. The Perfect Husband is not available at Audible, but is available at Amazon as a Kindle ebook. The other books are available at Audible. The series books in order are The Perfect Husband, The Third Victim, The Next Accident, The Killing Hour, Gone, and Say Goodbye.

Travel 5 Hours Into the Future . . . Instantly
This one is FAST. We're talking TIME TRAVEL fast. Turn the thing on, start listening to the exceptional voice of the narrator, and WHAM! - next thing you know you're 5 hours in the future, with very little idea of how you got there besides a slightly elevated heart rate, a slightly sore rear end and a somewhat dazed appreciation for the way this Coben guy managed to make you keep reading page after page without even thinking about the passing of time. OVERALL RATING: 5 solid stars. NARRATOR: Creme of the crop - 5 stars. STORY/PLOT: He took a little creative license, but he used it well - 5 stars. PACE: breakneck - 5 stars. CHARACTERS: 3 1/2 stars (OK, so they're not all fully fleshed out characters, but who cares? You just want to find out what happens to them next). DIALOGUE: Clever, well-written and extremely zippy. Excellent dialogue is the propellant that makes this book go so fast - 5 stars. WILL I REMEMBER THE PLOT OR CHARACTERS A YEAR FROM NOW? It's a bit disposable, not terribly deep, so maybe not. But in a thriller that isn't so bad: I figure I can enjoy it all over again in a year or so because I'll have forgotten what happens. WILL I READ OTHER BOOKS BY THIS AUTHOR? Absolutely -- he's got a new raving fan, and I can't wait to see how he's going to top this one.
    Very visual and entertaining
This is a crackerjack thriller. Sucks you in. Steven Weber is a great reader. Very entertaining, never dull. Highly recommend.
    hard to put down, enjoyable
I really enjoyed this book because it was filled with many twists and turns from the beginning all the way till the unexpected ending. Besides the unpredictability of this story, another thing that made this title enjoyable to me was that the computer activities, like the use of email were actually feasible. This was my first title by this author and I found it to be difficult to put down until I had finished it.
Like the book, -- odd ending
I thought it was a good book overall; I never saw that ending comming. I would have given this book a 5, but at the end he says "I bet you wonder what happened to X Y Z characters - Well, I'm not going to tell you, the story ends here" then he continues with the ending of one plot-line. I thought that was just a sorry way to end a story after making you like these other characters. Still, the book is a good read.
    A Great Listen
Interestingly enough, the reviews of this book hit both sides of the street.

    Difficult to follow
The story is slow, but much of that is a necessary result of character development. The narrator's enunciation, delivery, and accents were difficult to understand. His tone and tempo seem inconsistent with the time and place of the book's setting. Listen to the audio sample prior to purchasing.
    Good book, bad narration
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Richard Masur?
Richard Masur isn't a bad narrator, but the book sounds like a low-quality mp3 made from a third-generation audiotape duplicate recorded from a shortwave broadcast. Audible should ditch this recording and get something better. And unabridged.
    Bad quality audio
    Any additional comments?
This recording need to be replaced. It is very poor quality. The story and performance might be fine but it was hard to hear.
    Vintage Parker
As always, Robert B. Parker manages to combine self-analysis, social commentary, macho heroics, and sly humor into a great mystery story. I'm not sure what the audio equivalent of a "page turner" is, but I thoroughly enjoyed each chapter and eagerly moved on to the next. Jesse Stone is not quite as funny as Spenser(my all time favorite mystery hero), but he is a complex and interesting character. Night Passage is well worth the listening time.
Must Have Been Read Over the Phone
I read this particular book several years ago and looked to receiving the audio version. Much to my regret I neglected to listen to the sound sample. The audio transmission sounds as though Richard Mazur is reading it over a cell phone circa 2001; given the sound quality of this one I can find no reason whatsoever to recommend it.

Love the suspense I can hardly wait for the next release. best spy novel to date
Great action novel that deserves 5 stars, but...
I am down rating Day Zero i star because of lack of closure. I knew when I started the Clifton Chronicles series by Jeremy Archer and the Project Eden series by Brett Battles that each book except the last one would end with major unresolved issues leaving closure for the last books in the two series. Having listened to earlier books in the Jericho Quinn I was expecting Day Zero to end with closure. It did not, so I feel misled.
This series started with National Security which is a great story but the second and third books (Act of Terror and State of Emergency) were major disappointments, so I skipped Time of Attack. I purchased Day Zero at a steeply discounted price and am pleased that it is as good as National Security which is outstanding.
Tim Weiner does an excellent job of narration.
    No more. I am done
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Books with an ending are nice. This is pure crap
What do you think your next listen will be?
Nothing by the author for sure. What a waste of credits and time
Would you be willing to try another one of Tom Weiners performances?
    No freaking way
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
    None what so ever
    Any additional comments?
If you stumble across this review thinking about this series, I am not joking when I tell you it truly is NOT worth your time and money. None of the books have an ending or any closure. It is perpetual nonsense.
I love series books. But if you are hoping for something like Vince Flynn style... You will be pulling your hair out.
The narrator can't even keep a character accent straight.
    This was 100% pure crap.
    boring
i just couldn't get into this one. The story did not catch me at any point and while I stopped at Chapter 61, I gave it a shot
    good story
I'm hooked on the storyline. Enjoyable listen, not realistic but that's OK. narrator doesn't do womens voices well.

"Susan Boyer delivers big time with a witty mystery that is fun, radiant, and impossible to put down. I LOVE THIS BOOK!" New York Times Bestselling Author, Darynda Jones).
Liz Talbot thinks she's seen another ghost when she meets Calista McQueen. She's the spitting image of Marilyn Monroe.
Born precisely fifty years after the ill-fated star, Calista's life has eerily mirrored the late starlet's - and she fears the looming anniversary of Marilyn's death will also be hers. Before Liz can open a case file, Calista's life coach is executed.
Suspicious characters swarm around Calista like mosquitoes on a sultry low country evening: her certifiable mother, a fake aunt, her control-freak psychoanalyst, a private yoga instructor, her peculiar housekeeper, and an obsessed ex-husband.
Liz digs in to find a motive for murder, but she's besieged with distractions. Her ex has marriage and babies on his mind. Her too-sexy partner engages in a campaign of repeat seduction. Mamma needs help with Daddys devotion to bad habits. And a gang of wild hogs is running loose on Stella Maris. With the heat index approaching triple digits, Liz races to uncover a diabolical murder plot in time to save not only Calista's life, but also her own.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
i have happily recommended this book to several friends It is a fast paced frothing blend of mystery, coincidence, romance, look-a-likes, and gun play. Oh, and a guardian spirit to boot.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Lowcountry Bombshell?
A tossup between the first meeting with her new client and the ill-fated ferry back to the island. One is a near perfect start to the book and the other is fate personified.
Have you listened to any of Loretta Rawlingss other performances before? How does this one compare?
I listened to her performance in the first book of the series and loved it. Then she goes all breathy and gives us a really great Marilyn. Great pacing and near perfect characterizations.
