Exquisitely romantic, this companion to the highly praised Graceling has an entirely new cast of characters, save for one person who plays a pivotal role in both books. You don't need to have read or heard Graceling to love Fire. But if you haven't, you'll be dying to listen to it next.
    Critic Reviews:
"[T]his marvelous prequel will appeal to older teens, who will not only devour it, but will also love talking about it." (School Library Journal)

    Totally Different from Graceling
Unlike the some of the other reviewers, I actually enjoyed Fire more than Graceling. There are some big differences between these two books- they almost don't belong to the same series. However, I really liked Fire, the main character, because she wasn't as hot-tempered as Katsa. I really enjoyed the conflicts between the different parts of the Dells (the country). I found this book to be engrossing, exciting, and smoother overall than Graceling.
    Wonderful Story
The more I listen to this the better I like it. Ms. Elbrick breathes life into Fire. I especially liked the way she was able to convey the differences in voice between the spoken word and when Fire was communicating with her mind alone. A very fine performance.
    Very long, but addictive.
This story is quite lengthy and, during the times of war in the story, drags on a bit too long for my taste. But I think that has more to do with my lack of interest in war stories than any issue with the story itself. Luckily, for me, the entire story is not about war.
I literally started Fire a day after finishing Graceling. So I can't help but to compare the two books and its characters. I feel Katsa, in Graceling, was the more interesting character, and I admired her strength and determination more than Fire. Fire, however, was more complex and more mature, and I appreciated her inner struggles (though her exhaustion tended to leave me feeling exhausted as well). The same goes for the male leads. Graceling's Po was fun and playful, and so easy to like. Fire's Brigan was much more of a mystery, darker and deeper, and complex like Fire herself. I wanted so much more for them together than the story offered, though.
I loved both books equally, but for opposite reasons. Graceling was an easier read, felt more adventuresome, and was an emotional rollercoaster. Fire, on the other hand, was long and serious, much more of a "mental" story, and was more emotionally complex and mature.
Despite other marketing suggestions, I do think Graceling should be read prior to Fire. You can get through and understand Fire without the first book (Graceling), but you'll appreciate certain details and the one cross-over character only if you've read the first book. I personally think it's important entering this story with a bit of disgust for the cross-over in order for one of the memorable moments of the story to completely and immeasurably impact you.
I definitely recommend Fire as a great read, but be prepared to have your heart ripped to shreds (not going to give any spoilers though). Also, don't expect it to be as impulsively romantic as Graceling. While still full of romance, Fire's romance is much more mature and thought through. Fire may not be a sequel, but it definitely feels as if though you've grown up a bit with the author.
    Better of the 2
So I downloaded this immediately after finishing Graceling.

    Great Story, Slightly Better-than-Average Reader.
I love Tamora Pierce's works and Protector of the Small is actually my favorite series, but I found the performance by Bernadette Dunne a little distracting. From book to book the voices (namely Owen's) aren't consistent, and Ms. Dunne frequently puts the primary emphasis in a sentence on the wrong word, either changing the meaning of a sentence or removing it entirely. Specifically I can recall one sentence in either Page or Squire when she is listing the contents of Kel's travel pack given to her by her mysterious well-wisher; the written sentence is admittedly a little confusing in its comma usage, but the problem is when Ms. Dunne reads "...a hank of light, strong rope..." as "...a hank of light; strong rope.." changing the meaning from "a short length of sturdy, lightweight rope" to "a short length of light, and some strong rope," which is nonsensical. There are other examples of these strange malapropisms though I can't think of any more off the top of my head, but they do happen frequently enough to be distracting.
Loved it! Has a few mispronounced words and names
Great story, love Pierce 's stories based in Torttal. Narrator mispronounced a few things, but not too noticeable. If you like this series check out Tricksters Choice and Tricksters Queen; by far my absolute favorite books.
    Great book
Love the book. Love all of Tamara's books. Don't like the performance person. Don't like the way she she has picked to read (voice) people in the books
love this series and the author...
Tamora Peirce, please write a story about Kel's and Neal's children! and the child seer inari as she is grown! I love your books and stories.... I never tire of reading them!
Protector of the small gives great lessons to anyone who reads it!! Lessons in civility we have lost!
The entire series just as the Lioness quartet before is written with great wisdom and humanity that has been lost!!

Spoiled rich kids are vampires... no wait, angels
You need to be prepared for several things before listening to this book. One, all the kids are skinting rich, even the "poor" ones. Like how Lizzy Bennet is not rich, yet she is compared to others below her. Two, there's barely any vamp stuff and what there is is confusing when mixed with the idea of reincarnated fallen angels. Three, as in City of Bones there's a bit of incest going on that the author is trying to pull off as normal. Like how the pharoahs took sisters as wives normal. Cept it's modern day. No one has a problem with it. Mkay.
That said, it's an okay tale. You can tell the author put some effort in it, well, partially, but I was left wondering why she didn't complete the story. It could have been so much more. Like researching only 70% of your material and leaving it at that. But then, listening to spoiled rich kids get picked to be models isn't all that interesting to me, though it may be to others. And I work in the modeling industry.
The narrator is okay, she's just a bit too old for the reading. We're talking about teenagers and she sounds like she's in her late late 30s. Which doesn't matter, since I know people in their 50s who do voice-overs for teens. Wrong choice.
There's a lot of semi-adventure without the customary wrap-up of certain details. I feel if a reader is presented with a girl named Bliss, we should at least be given a reason for the name. Nickname? Real name? Why name your kid that? Nothing. We're just meant to accept that all girls born in Texas have a chance at being called Bliss. There's other questions too but you'll prolly ask them yourself so I won't ruin it.
It's my firm belief that a first book should stand on it's own. It was clear this author believed she would write a series. She did, but still, if the first book is okay instead of great, what makes readers want to move on? Fortunately for this subject everyone is craving teen vampire love so it'll probably do well.
    Love love love the Series
I have read all of the blue blood books from the series that have been released so far...I only actually bought the 1st audio book for a friend and I must say I do not like the narrator's voice...that is not how imagined the character's voice in my head. They should have chosen a younger sounding narrator's voice...it was just torture to listen too. I give the series 5 stars and 1 star for the narrator.
    Meh
What would have made Blue Bloods better?
    A different narrator
What didnt you like about Christina Moores performance?
EVERYONE sounds like a boy! Here we have high school girls that are supposed to be high society sounding extremely masculine.

    Wonderful listen
Loved the book and Jenna Lamia does a wonderful job. I do wish she would have narrated the first ones.
    easy reading/listening.
Sex hungry, vampire wannabe, Zoe Redbird is a powerful and special teenager whose adventures are related in the five books that encompass the series House of Night. In the three months that transpire in the 5 books published so far, she manages to juggle 4 boyfriends, dead and undead friends and very powerful enemies. The books are repetitive, and with a tint of male downgrading, and homosexual loving tendencies. The books are also entertaining and have an interesting and smart approach behind the vampire genesis. The language is that of teenagers and is fresh and entertaining. I do recommend the reading/listening of this captivating book series.
    Great series!
The House of Night series is tagged as YA, and so it is (lots of teenage angst) - but I can honestly say I have enjoyed, and I am in my (ahem) mid-30's! :)
The plot is very interesting, and each book leaves you wondering what will happen next! I am looking forward to the next release in the fall!
    great book
love this book it may my life so much easier and I still believe Nexus real
    HORRIBLE narration
The book series is wonderful but they switched narrators after the first three books. The original narrator had different voices for the characters and modulated her voice. This girl sounds like she is 12 and the characters are dull. If she does the sixth book, I may not continue. Her voice grates on my nerves.

In this imaginative novel, Neal Shusterman explores questions of life, death, and what just might lie in between.
    Members Reviews:
    Interesting concept
It made me a bit uneasy to read about children who lost their way between life and death. But the storyline was well thought out and talently written. I liked how some things crossed over like birthday cakes and the twin towers. There was a fortune cookie twist that was also a fun idea. I think the thing I liked most -- and what I was most worried about -- was that the ending was good. It was clean and satisfying. I already knew there were sequels to this book, so I was concerned that Shusterman would leave these kids wandering in the in-between forever. But he cleaned it up real well and I will probably give the sequel a try as well.
    A Surprise Gem
I must say that when I first read the synopsis for Everlost I wasn't sure it would be in my literary wheelhouse. All this talk of "bands of lost children" brought visions of children's literature à J.M. Barry. Turns out, it is much deeper and multi-layered than I could ever have guessed.
My nieces and nephews have me on a YA fiction reading marathon and I loved Shusterman's "Unwind" books so much that I wanted to try out some more of his works. I found "Everlost" to be a creative take on the afterlife theme with the various factions of rogues (both obvious and clandestine) and heroes vying for control of the hearts and minds of its departed minors.
I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series and recommend it to any YA fan.
    Five Stars!
Neal Shusterman succeeds again! Everlost is wonderful. I stayed up all night first reading the book, then listening to it. Nick Podehl reads the story well, and sounds just like I would have imagined the characters. Each character has a distinct voice, but they never sound stupid or annoying to listen to.
This is such a unique story, and I would recommend it to anyone. Although I'm fifteen, I would recommend it to anyone from 11 to 17. Shusterman wrote this so well that it can be enjoyed by any audience. :) Happy listening!
Part one of a great trilogy
I see a pattern in Neal Shusterman's books: he sets things up slowly and steadily, the first part of his books always kind of meandering along as Shusterman adds layer after layer after layer, until you've reached the end where he's created a richly illustrated world in which every little action holds great meaning. Everlost follows this pattern and provides a gratifying ending. Better yet, Everlost in itself is just the beginning of a wonderful trilogy, and Shusterman has just set you up for a wonderful ride that will continue in two more volumes. He has become one of my favorite authors, based on this trilogy and "Unwound". I recommend this for kids and adults, especially for road trips as it will keep you entertained until you "get where you're going."
    Nice Premise
After being thoroughly impressed by "Unwind", I decided to give this trilogy a try.

Harry Potter with a twist is back
Harry Potter with a twist continues in The Copper Gauntlet, the second book in The Magisterium series from Holly Black and Cassandra Clare.
As I mentioned in my review of book one, The Iron Trial, it is impossible to read The Magisterium and not think of Harry Potter. In this case, imagine that Harry has learned about his Horcrux situation right at the beginning of his academic studies and that Neville has been acclaimed as the Chosen One, able to defeat Voldemort. This gives Call a far more nuanced outlook than Harry, especially at an equivalent age (Chamber of Secrets era.) which makes him, to me, a more interesting character. Dont get me wrong; I love Harry. However, in the early books at least, he sees things very much as black or white, good or evil. Not so Call.
The connections are too numerous to be accidental. This time around they are more subtle, but still present. We have an antagonist whose main objective is to conquer Death itself. His nickname is The Enemy of Death. Voldemort, anyone? Fair enough, it is a fairly common trope, but combine it with magic school and you have Harry Potter. Another theme common to both is the idea that we are defined by our choices. Although Clare and Black are using many of the same tropes as Rowling, the way they handle them is very different and this makes The Copper Gauntlet a great read.
With regard to being defined by our choices, it is interesting to note that this is something Call decides for himself through the maintenance of what he calls his Evil Overlord list"; he mentally tallies each choice he makes and action he takes to decide if it makes him more or less evil. Sometimes, this is played for laughs when he thinks things like well, an evil overlord wouldnt fetch sandwiches for his friends, but it still expresses that same theme. This is something he chooses to do for himself; Harry has to have this explained to him by Dumbledore.
Another trope in common is that of the leaders of the society being in denial about the reality of the situation. The Ministry of Magic denies the reality of the threat posed by Voldemort as the Assembly declares that Madden is dead and gone and that the war is over.

John Flanagan is an amazing writer
Would you consider the audio edition of The Hunters to be better than the print version?
There is not much that can compare with the weight of a book in your hand but the audio version of this book is very good!
What other book might you compare The Hunters to and why?
It's predecessors The Outcasts, and The Invaders, both wonderful books as well. Also the Ranger's Apprentice Books which are the companion series.
Have you listened to any of Richard Keatings other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes I have and he has done a great job in all of the ones I have listened to.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
    The wise and the cunning.
Scandians love a good Saga and so did we.
This series was very enjoyable. The narrator was exceptionally consistent in voice for the various characters, making the book come to life. I had purchased this for my boys (ages 10 - 22) to listen to on long trips. As they would play over the car stereo, I got interested and even my wife has been excited to share this adventure with our boys. Another success for John Flanagan.
    Excellent ending for the story.
What did you love best about The Hunters?
The quick wit of the characters through all of the books.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Hunters?
The final battle was gripping. Didn't seem long enough.
Which character as performed by Richard Keating was your favorite?
    Thorn.
    Great as Should Be.
    Any additional comments?
Great story by John as usual. Picks up right where it should. Finish off with this great ending!
Doesn't pick up where 2nd book left off
The beginning is a little confusing as the 3rd book does not pick up where the 2nd one left off.

    Adrian ADRIAN A D R I A N
Alright, I seriously only read this book for Adrian and he does not disappoint.
The series as a whole is so-so. But if you have come this far you either know that, or think differently. I you like Bloodlines then you will love Indigo Spell. It's the best of the series by far.
It goes without saying Adrian saves the book again. I am in love with him, I really am I just can't help it.
There is a little of mystery, action, and a whole lotta romance. Fans of Meed and the Bloodlines series will not be disappointed.
    Sydney and Adrian Heat Up!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. If you have enjoyed the series so far, then Indigo Spell is a great addition :-)
What other book might you compare The Indigo Spell to and why?
Not sure. While they are spin-offs of the Vampire Academy books, the farther into the series, the less like the VA books they are. Magic takes a center stage in Indigo Spell, so maybe a Discover of Witches? There is the whole forbidden love between a vampire and witch thing going on.
What about Emily Shaffers performance did you like?
She is a decent narrator, not my favorite, but far from my least favorite.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
    Forbidden love?
    Any additional comments?
The previous two books are told from Sydney's POV, just like this one, but there is a lot of Jilly, Eddie, and the other Moroi/Dhampirs. But this book is very Syndey/Adrian focused, which if you like their romance is a great thing. If you don't care for it as much as say, Rose and Dimitri's, then you might not like this book as much as the previous two. You get to meet Marcus, and find out what his group is all about. You find out what you already know about the Alchemists, that they are likely in league with the Warriors. And you get to attend Sonya's wedding, which brings us back to the VA cast. Rose and Dimitri, and Queen Lissa and Christian, are at the wedding, but we don't get to spend too much time with them.
Sydney is being hunted by a bad/evil witch, who happens to also be Mrs. Terwillinger's sister. In turn, Mrs.

First off, if you're looking for a 100% standalone novel, this is not it. While it doesn't exactly end in what I would term a cliffhanger, the conclusion raises a lot more questions than it answers and the main character narrating the story puts it right out there that it's not over. Another small warning if you're buying this for your kid -- while this appears to be firmly in YA territory, be aware that there are several bloody bits and language that would get a movie rated R. So if that bothers you, consider carefully before you buy.
So about the book itself. I found this one to be a rather mixed bag. There are a lot of interesting concepts going on in this book, but I didn't really feel like any of them were fully realized or explained. Since there are apparently going to be sequels to this book, I realize you can't spill all the beans straight off, but at the end of this book my knowledge of how Oz came to such a pass is still pretty negligible. You learn early on that, surprise! Dorothy and cohorts are now the evil rulers of Oz. What never gets explained satisfactorily is why. It's suggested throughout the book that the Oz books we know and love weren't wrong, that everything did happen that way and that Dorothy used to be good and has changed. There's a hint that she developed an addiction to magic, but her becoming a sort of magical junkie doesn't fully explain the depths of corruption and sadism to which Dorothy has sunk. To be fair, I have just noticed today that there is a prequel novella available for the Kindle on Amazon which may answer some of these question.
Several other things bothered me about this book as well. Our narrator and main character gets bullied from page one and that pretty much goes on throughout the book. She gets bullied into joining the revolution, she gets bullied for being rubbish at training in the beginning (like, wow, you're a teenager from a world in which you don't have to defend yourself from anything more serious than a high school shoving contest, why aren't you the uber warrior we need?!), she gets bullied for not being the hard as nails, nothing before the cause soldier that she was kind of forced into training to be. Adversity makes a story, but seriously? Do we need to ream the girl at every turn when there can be no reasonable expectation for her to have adapted so well to this world in so short a time?
Overall, I'm giving this book 3 stars across the board.

    Omg. So many surprises
There were so many surprises in this story and some twists that I did not see coming. I am starting on the final book to see how it ends.
