Don't let the sample fool you - So Good!
I avoided purchasing Shatter Me for months. In fact, I first became interested in the story when I read a review from an author I admire who loved Shatter Me. But when I tried the sample on Audible.com, I thought the narrator's voice sounded whiney and I couldn't get past the "scratch out" noise.
Then I kept finding new authors I enjoyed, and when I would read their blogs, many of them raved about Shatter Me. So then I put it in my "wish list" category and it sat there for months. I just couldn't get past the sample offered.
Finally, I downloaded the book , being too lazy to research a new book and settling on just choosing from my wish list. WOW! What was I waiting for? Shatter Me is exciting and such a good listen - - probably more so for females as far as following the main character's erratic thought process.
The narrator's voice is not whiney at all. I think the sample doesn't do Kate Simses justice. Yes, her voice is higher pitched, but after a moment or so, it's not at all annoying. And the narrator does a great job interpretting and relaying Juliet's (protagonist) internal thought process and emotions. The narrator also does decent male voices - - I just finished two separate books with horrible male voices by a female narrator so this is quite a relief.
Further, the sample (and another review on here) give the impression that the entire story is going to be full of the "scratch out" noise. I interpret this noise to be Juliet's mental stopping or scratching out of her thought process to redirect herself in a different way. In the beginning of the story, Juliet's mind isn't exactly in the most stable place, so her thoughts are more jumbled and the "scratch out" noise happens more often. However, this noise is not as overwhelming or distracting as I thought it would be, and eventually, you don't even notice it at all.
As for the story itself, it's terribly romantic - - not in a horrible gushy way, but in an appropriately steamy way. I love the relationship between Juliet and Adam. But I especially love how the antagonist (Warner) really complicates matters. I have my suspicions as far as his significance, and I can't wait for book 2 to see what happens with him.
I think the author does a great GREAT job of keeping the reader (listener) guessing as far as what Juliet's "issue" is, as well as the current state of civilization (don't want to give away spoilers) as well as a whole array of twists and surprises that actually make sense to the story and help it develop.
I read another review that complains this story is not really a Dystopian novel. I disagree.

Third in the "trilogy" Not the end.
So Amazon.com has been calling this series a trilogy, it's not. No closure here. But that's actually ok. Turns out this is the best one yet (though I think the 4th book should be it). The first book, The Demon King, was a slow builder as the foundations of the characters, their past, and their environments was filled out by the author with care. The second book, The Exiled Queen, had more happening. But this third one is full of action driving the story forward at a much quicker pace. There are many exciting developments and I was caught by surprise at the sudden announcement of the narrator saying, "The End." I should have noticed the subtle difference in the publisher description as a 'seven realms novel' instead of 3rd in a trilogy. But the listening hours were long enough and the story definitely engaging enough that I wasn't too put out. The narrator is limited in her range of believable male voices but is still enjoyable. I will be getting the next one... (I don't repeat story synopsis in a review since that is found in the book description already, but, since no ratings are given it should be said that all 3 so far have been completely 'clean' of adult content for anyone who is concerned about that)
Depth of story and logic is great characters even better
Risk, daring, plot all rewarding to listen to. Could not wait to get back to my studio to make art and listen so at times i didn't. I am now on the next book of this series and cannot eat for it to down load to see who the queen ends up with or if she herself ends.
    Wonderful
Great continuation of the storyline. Exciting action, daring escapes & characters to cheer for & villains to hate. Ms Chima is an excellent author. I feel I can see her world so clearly in my mind's eye :)
    Best book in the series!
This series is phenomenal. Book 3 is so good. We get a lot more of Raisa and Han together. Loved it!!!
    Enjoyed!
Would you listen to The Gray Wolf Throne again? Why?
This Rate "G" series was entertaining and I enjoyed it. I look forward to a 4th book as I think there is room for more story. :)

    Publisher's Summary:
Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.
In a dark and dusty shop, a devil's supply of human teeth grown dangerously low.
And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherwordly war.
Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real; she's prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands"; she speaks many languages - not all of them human; and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she's about to find out.
When one of the strangers - beautiful, haunted Akiva - fixes his fire-colored eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?
    Members Reviews:
    Beautiful Writing, Mediocre Romance
Blue haired, free spirited Karou runs between worlds to gather special items for her mentor/father figure, Brimstone. He gives her wishes when she completes her tasks and like a spoiled child, frivolously wastes them at times. On one particular errand, she meets someone from her past whom she doesn't yet remember and you travel with her to find out the answers.
The writing is fluid, detailed, and rich with character development in this YA novel. The explanation of why Karou collects the items is fascinating.
Khristine Hvam is flawless and sounds exactly as I imagine Karou would.
What I would change is the characters' flawless beauty. A little imperfection makes the story more plausible and the references to perfection are irritating. Also didn't care for the half animal, fantastical other world and relationships. The book would have been better without it, however the writing is lyrical, lovely, and I recommend this YA romance.
    Amazing story & INCREDIBLE Narrator!
I cannot believe I doubted this for a minute. Brava, Ms. Taylor! *standingovation*
Karou, a seventeen-year-old, lives in Prague and has a few friends at the art school she attends. With her naturally blue hair and gifted drawings of a magical world her classmates don't believe exists, Karou has more secrets than even she knows what to do with. Regularly called on by Brimstone, a creature with a ram's head who runs a curious shop filled with teeth, to complete mysterious tasks requiring her sudden departures, it's not a surprise for others to write off her disappearances. While her best friend, Zuzana might raise an eyebrow to Karou's answers, she doesn't pursue more detail. No one knows that Karou speaks multiple languages and uses magic to travel from Prague to Morocco and other cities within a blink of an eye. Brimstone, almost a father-figure for Karou, regularly reminds her that, while magic may be fun, it always comes with a price. It's only when Akiva comes into her life, a glorious angel who knows much more about her past than she does, that Karou learns just how much of a price it actually is. Her own mysterious past could be even more than she can handle.
With love, magic, battles, and loyalty, the creative tale from author Laini Taylor unfolds with style and intrigue.

Hes been expecting the one from his nightmare, the nightmare hes had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments, the one with the darkness and the wind and the screaming.... This monster, though, is something different. Something ancient, something wild. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor. It wants the truth. Patrick Ness spins a tale from the final story idea of Siobhan Dowd, whose premature death from cancer prevented her from writing it herself.
Darkly mischievous and painfully funny, A Monster Calls is an extraordinarily moving novel about coming to terms with loss from two of our finest writers for young adults.

A good "one-timer" for all ages
This book is definitely on my one-timer list. A one-timer is a good or great book that I will only read once because it is too emotionally draining or intense for me to handle. I admit I dont usually read/listen to these types of stories because of the emotional drain they cause. I know some folks find them very therapeutic or cathartic but that is not me so I had force myself through this one.
That being stated it doesnt mean this book isnt good because it is actually a very well done story with a great buildup of tension and emotion. The relationship between Connor and the Monster didnt seem forced or unrealistic and there was a natural flow to the story. Even though you know the ending is coming, the force of it isnt lessened because of the good job the author did of building the emotional ties to the characters of Connor and his mom.
Jason Isaacs did an absolutely fabulous job with the narration in this book. Then again as far as I am concerned he could read the phone book and I would be happy. It was very interesting though as he voiced each of the characters I created a very vivid image in my head of how each character appeared and that was due to his great ability.
    Most powerful book this year
Patrick Ness has written a book that will stay with me for a very long time. The human condition is so well depicted, our vulnerability, our capacity for self-deception, and our lack of seeing beyond the situation directly in front of us. Isaac's narration kept me enthralled, wanting to know what was next, all the while knowing what the final outcome would be.
    Sweet Surprise
This book was chosen by my book club and I didn't have a clue what it was about. I recently lost a dear friend to cancer after a 4 year battle and am headed down the same path now with another dear friend. I sobbed as I empathized with this young man.

Title: The New World: Prequel to the Chaos Walking Trilogy

    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 47 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-13-11
    Publisher: Candlewick on Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 573 votes
    Genres: Teens, Sci-Fi & Fantasy
    Publisher's Summary:
The New World is a prequel to the award-winning Chaos Walking trilogy, setting the stage for the world we discover in The Knife of Never Letting Go, The Ask and the Answer, and Monsters of Men. The story was written while the author served as writer in residence for the Booktrust an independent UK-wide charity dedicated to encouraging people of all ages and cultures to enjoy books.
The New World tells of Viola's journey to the New World, brilliantly capturing the hope and fear of settlers in search of a new life. Patrick Ness says that he wrote it "as a huge and deeply-felt thank you to readers. I've had so many questions about Viola and what her life was like before that I couldn't resist the opportunity to reveal just a little bit extra. I knew these things - they're vitally important to her as a character, even if they're not directly in the novels - so it felt like a secret trip I could take readers on. The challenge was to make it work on its own, too, so anyone could read it. That was really, really good fun, and I hope the final result is an exciting one."
The New World can be listened to before or after the trilogy and some may choose to do both. The story works as a standalone piece, but listeners already familiar with The Knife of Never Letting Go will learn more about Violas life and the events leading to her arrival and first encounter with Todd, while newcomers to the trilogy will discover a white-knuckle ride of an introduction to the series. Whether you're a new or faithful listener, though, it's a welcome chance to immerse yourself in the world of Chaos Walking.

    Good, but misleading
Let me start by saying I liked this short story and I love the series.
I am disappointed and worried that many who have not read the series will read this first and believe that it is similar to what the series is like. The good writing is of course the same, but what makes the series so good is the concept of the story. Everyone can hear what every male is thinking including animals.
I believe this series to be better then the Hunger Games, it is certainly more original. Humans hunting humans for sport is not a new idea. Don't get me wrong I have read the first two books in the hunger games, plan on reading the third and believe them excellent books. I just like this better and believe it is not as popular because the main star is not female, and females read more then males. This prequel may even be the authors attempt to capture that audience.
So if you have read the series, you will enjoy this free story and if you have not you will enjoy, but remember, The Knife of Never Letting Go is awesome.
    Great start..
Wow!.. What an exciting start. If THE NEW WORLD is truly a good representation of whats to come in the Chaos Walking Trilogy, then Im excited to jump into the series and find out what the future holds for Viola.
    Interesting ... contemplative ...
Would you try another book from Patrick Ness and/or Angela Dawe?
    I think I should .. or would.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The story was a bit dragged out but all in all, I found it a nice listen. I don't like whinny children whose parents are doing the best they can to make a better life for everyone as a whole.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Angela Dawe?
    Yes ...

IT'S NOT A MATTER OF WHAT HE WANTED,
IT'S A MATTER OF WHAT IT IS.
I gave the first book four stars and I was not going to continue the series, sticking to my conviction that I will only listen to what I believe will earn five stars. One of the people I am following just loved this book and another said it was as good if not better then the first. Trusting my leaders, I got this when it was on sale. I will say that there is less speech-a-fying in this then the first. On the other hand this story does not differ much from the first and is pretty much a stretcher to get you to buy book 3. If you loved book one and want more of the same then you should love this. They make book 3 sound like a good adventure, but I am jaded now and will read no more Maberry young adult books. I love his adult books and plan on getting everything in the Joe Ledger series.
    YOU CAN'T UNRING A BELL
Some have sung the praises of the narrator, so maybe it is just me, but I had to put this guy on 2x speed to get through it. I felt he read extremely slow and to be honest at 2x, he still was kind of slow.
Great series, can't wait for the third!
This turned out to be a great listen. I have to admit the first few chapters of Rot & Ruin almost made me stop listening. The story is through the eyes of a kid and how he grows up post zombie apocalypse, so it kinda put me off. But it definitely picks up and even the narration got better.. So by the time I got through it I had to pick up Dust and Decay right away.
So that's why, for me at least, the story gets 4 stars and not 5 because of the kid gloves on the story, but on Wikipedia its supposed to be for "young adults".
I wanted the story to push more, more east (where they are trying to get to) and more growing up, faster. The love story parts takes *forever*, I think the younger readers would like a little faster hitting of the bases there too. Also, when are they gonna get some real weapons instead of the wooden swords! After the first book no way they'd go out there _again_ with wooden swords! Com'on Mr. Maberry!
Dr Skilz and J-Dog, good stuff! Chong really made me mad though. Great characters and skilled writing won the day.
Hutchison's narration (once again) is excellent!
Sometimes shame is a more powerful engine than rage. ~Jonathan Maberry
DUST & DECAY (Benny Imura #2) is even better than the captivating ROT & RUIN!
Its rare to come across a sequel that is as good as it predecessor and even more rare for one to surpass the original, but Jonathan Maberry does just that with DUST & DECAY. In this thrilling second installment, Mayberry gives us even more emotion, more danger, more action, more zoms and more death.

    Pace is hard to follow.
Often during the book I was confused as to where the characters were. The narrator almost seems to read new chapters like she was reading the next sentence. The action would pass from one location from another without much transition and if you are like me and listening to audiobook is something you do when you do something else then it's mighty confusing. Book wise this is ok but it doesn't translate well into audio. The story was alright but I might have enjoyed more if I could have followed the pace.
    Listening for the First Time
I've read the book several times before, but I've never listened to it. The narrator was good at voices, but kind of shit at using the text to inform how she read something. For instance, if the text said, "Kaye said thoughtfully," after a sentence, the narrator wouldn't have paid attention to it. I found that quite jarring at times, although otherwise her reading was fairly good.
    great story!
I love that for once a female character has brains instead of relying totally on the male for not only physical but mental stability. my only complaint is the romance. It was good but it kind of made no sense why they had an attraction to one another nor did the author elaborate on it. based on how fast paced the story was and the fact that they only had three times that they had any time to be acquaintanted with one another. good story . will ready the rest maybe I have to read the next part to understand why they have such an attraction to one anothrr.
    narrator choice doesn't match content
loved it, would have preferred a darker reader, as she was a bit to airy and bright for the content.
some jumping in a few chapters.
    have always loved holly black
    LOVED the narration!!!
Narrator was awesome!! She did a great job with all the characters! I hope she is the narrator in the next two books!!

    Part 2 is a go.
More revelations, more powers and more surprising time twist that explain and confuse everything. I liked this book. If you liked Infinity, you will like this one. This looks like its building to a amazing story for Nick. Plus Nick has a brother? Cool. This book is filled with awesomeness. The only way to be better is if the author had waited for fill three books and released them as one book.
    Who will save your soul?
The fate of the world is at stake, and the deciding factor between good and evil rest upon the shoulders of a teenager. Sherrilyn Kenyon's foray into the popular YA genre hits it's stride with the sophomoric release of The Chronicles of Nick series, Invincible. This second effort is definitely better than the first. We pick up where the last book left off, right after Nick and his friends defeat the zombies, and the mortents. Oh, and then there's Kyrian's flashing some fang. But who and what his so called friends and allies are, are not the only obstacles Nick will be facing. The pressure is on for Nick to start mastering his powers, because there's a bounty on his head, and no shortage of demons trying to collect. His love life has gone from not to hot, trying to decide between the girl he's pined for in the past and the one who saw him when no one else did. Nick can't seem to catch a break with a new principal who's even worst than the last one. Gautier can't even put a W in the win column when the new football coach wants him back on the team, since he also has even more devious extra curricular activities to add to Nick's roster. In Nick's world everyone's a player and surrounding yourself with the right people is the key to being a pawn or a king, and by the end someone close to him will be on evil's payroll. His soul is constantly teetering in the balance, as we watch on pins and needles whether the choices he makes now will sway the future.
I found the writing as witty as some of the characters. Kenyon approached this book with a sense of humor and satire that I think really fits her leading man. She really captures an innocence, curiosity, and attitude with Nick that make you want him to succeed. At the same time Invincible was a lot of fun bringing back old characters like Bubba and Mark and adding some new dimensions to them, while introducing new and interesting characters like Grim, Pain, and Suffering. Even when we were in the build up stage at the beginning of the book Kenyon kept us occupied with interesting places and people like the Sanctuary. It's a great vibrant world set in an equally lively and tragic city, that mirrors Nick's character.

    Lost in just words
Unfortunately, this book never really developed. Way too much time devoted to the mundane... going to bed, waking up, mourning her losses, alot of "shoulda, coulda, wouldas" in this book which led into alot of nothingness and very little storyline since the last book, there seemed to be so much details and information in the first 3-4 books, now it seems she"s just writing to fill pages.
To me, in this book there was only 2 important points in the whole book, and the rest was just filler. I love this series I love the writer, but I was trully disappointed in the lack of substance the book carried..
    love this series
i love the books but was disappointed with all the name dropping and what seemed like product placement in this book. sad
    Love it!
I love this series. I just wish I didn't have to wait til November for the next installment. I guess I shouldn't have finished it in 24 hours (that's with a 14 hour shift at work).
    love it.
love the narrator, the books and pc cast for the amazing story. :) <3 :D
Good but a little cheesy in parts.
I have follower the series from the beginning and enjoyed each one, however I am not sure if it was the book or the way it was read but the first 1hr 45min were kind of cheesy. But once I got past that first part it was a good book. I was interested the whole time. GOOD WORK P. C. and Kristin Cast! I am getting to the point that I am starting to loose interest in seeing Zoe get the emotional crap kicked out of her over and over and over again. SHE NEEDS A HAPPY ENDING!

    Great Ending
This book provided a perfect ending to the Vampire Academy series. The characters were consistent, the plot was well-paced, and the mystery kept me guessing until the end. I loved every minute of it.
For the most part, Emily Shaffer's performance was good. I still don't like her voices for Adrian or Dimitri, but everything else sounds just about right.
    Worth the wait!
I was first introduced to the VA series by a co-worker and was immediately hooked. I usually don't start a series until all of the installments are out, but Richelle's style and excellence in continuity put me in the "hurry up and wait mode". It was so worth it!
The romance makes one's heart ache and soar at the same time and is so tastefully written; completely appropriate for the younger listener. Listening to this series makes grabbing the tissues much easier. The mysteries are impossible to second guess and left me drop-jawed. Listening to this final installment of the VA series was truly amazing... just when I thought it was over... it wasn't... and I still want more! I guess I'll keep waiting for the spin-off... and listen to this series (as well as her others) again and again.
    LOVE THIS BOOK!!!
I have been anxiously awaiting this book for the last few months....and it has delivered! I couldn't put it down!! I read it in less than 24 hours. It wrapped everything up nicely and although I am sad to see this series go....I love the way this ended. Narrator is ok, but the book itself out shines any issues with the narrator. I would have liked to see them go with the SAME Narrator for every book, but that is my only complaint! If you love Vampire Academy books, you'll love this!
I am sad to see it end, but it was perfect timing.
There were a few loose ends, but i suppose in life it will always be like that. I think that it was a great conclusion to this series! I am still not happy with the narrator, her male voices make me cringe and it is such a shame because the male characters in this book are so amazing. Her voice makes Demetri come off sounding like some skeezy back alley dude and Adrian is hard not to laugh at. That aside... this story keeps you on your toes and Rose Hathaway never lets you down. She stays true to the character we have grown to admire in this series.
Wonderful....but could have been five stars
I have read this entire series twice....all of the books are very good. I enjoyed this book, but I wish that things had ended better for Adrian. One of my favorite series....read and enjoy. I love Emily Shaffer as the narrator, she has a great Dimitri and Adrian voice :)
