Extremely disappointing - not as portrayed
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Not that you would guess it from the description, but this is a very poor quality recording of a panel discussion at a large conference. It is undated. The recording almost sounds as though it was made from the audience using a smartphone; though it would probably be better if it had. Sound levels are all over the place and never good enough. The discussion is rambling, there's no structure to it, and it is clearly old.
Would you ever listen to anything by the authors again?
    Never.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
There isn't one. There's a panel chair and he is just as indecipherable as the panellists.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The New Yorker Festival - Advocacy Journalism?
I'd throw the whole thing away. It is a rip off.
    Any additional comments?
If you really MUST listen to it, play it at 1.5 times normal speed and it is still rambling, but at least the voices are a bit clearer in the higher register!

    Title: Hollywood Animal
    Subtitle: A Memoir
    Author: Joe Eszterhas
    Narrator: Scott Brick
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 28 hrs and 26 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-05-04
    Publisher: Books on Tape
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 80 votes
Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Celebrity Bios
    Publisher's Summary:
On one level, Hollywood Animal is a shocking and often devastating look inside the movie business. It intimately explores the concept of fame and gives us a never-before-seen look at the famous. Eszterhas reveals the fights, the deals, the extortions, the backstabbing, and the sex, drugs, and rock'n'roll world that is Hollywood. But there are many more levels to this extraordinary work. It is the story of a street kid who survives a life filled with obstacles and pain...a chronicle of a love affair that is sensual, glorious, and unending...an excruciatingly detailed look at a man facing down the greatest enemy he's ever fought: the cancer inside him...and perhaps most important, Hollywood Animal is the heartbreaking story of a father and son that defines the concepts of love and betrayal.
This is a book that will shock you and make you laugh, anger you and move you to tears. It is pure Joe Eszterhas: a raw, spine-chilling celebration of the human spirit.
    Critic Reviews:
"The story about Mr. Eszterhas and his father, buried at the heart of Hollywood Animal, is a powerful and affecting one." (The New York Times)

    MEMO to JOE ESZTERHAS
    Joe, Baby,
I just read your Hwood Animal script. Fantastic! Perfect! Best script ever!
The whole office loved it. A script reader peened the IT Guy with a bat. I was laughing so hard I could barely give directions to the ambulance.
Here are the changes needed before shooting: No one cares that whatshisname, the protagonist (Scott Brick?) pronounces home run wrong; lose that. And the 50s ran too long (they dragged back then too).
You can pad the Rolling Stone gig. Maybe he covered John or Ringo you cant overdo The Beatles.
Market Research says the ending doesnt work: everyone hates this guy. He cant play Caligula for 40 years, get a sore throat, find God and then ride off into the sunset. Not a chance.
Were thinking Obitzs Wilshire goons track him down at a homeless shelter after his second wifes divorce lawyer takes him for all hes worth. The goons blow his brains out and steal seven dollars from his wallet. Whadda ya think?
We want to see 100 pages 110 tops.
    Love ya man!
Lets do Chilis next time youre in Modesto. Well go over my latest script.
    A Winner Despite Itself
Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed the book Joe Eszterhas buried inside all the hyperbole. But I guess we shouldn't consider it strange that a writer is so in love with his words that he refuses to give way to an editor. Eszterhas has led an exciting and provocative life, both in Cleveland and in his dreaded Southern California, he's met many talented Hollywood denizens, he's written some of the best and worst screenplays ever to make it to the silver screen. It's just too bad one had to slug through all the repetitious crapola to get to the good stuff.
Still, Scott Brick is so wonderful as the narrator, it almost made it all worthwhile.
I rolled my eyes so far back, I could see my brain
What did you like about this audiobook?
The audiobook starts off well with the writer's childhood memories and how he became what he is-let's face it- a soft porn hack. Peppered with some Hollywood trivia and short stories the book then degenerates in the middle into a petition to justify Eszterhas's hypocrisy claiming he didn't know who/what his father was, and sugarcoating his adultery and abandonment of his family.

    Dated, But Interesting
This interview is a bit dated, as the participants sometimes discuss coming events that have now already passed. However, the interview gives you a good feel for the style of David Maraniss and some interesting information about Al Gore. Not bad for the price. :-)

  • Paul Lynde: A Biography Audiobook by Cathy Rudolph

    Title: Paul Lynde: A Biography
Subtitle: His Life, His Love(s) and His Laughter
    Author: Cathy Rudolph
    Narrator: Susan Scher
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 25 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-12-16
    Publisher: BearManor Media
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 22 votes
Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Celebrity Bios
    Publisher's Summary:
This book will let you into the heart and soul of Paul Lynde. Best remembered for outrageous jokes on Hollywood Squares, as Uncle Arthur from Bewitched, and as the frantic father in Bye Bye Birdie, Paul was never satisfied with his career - or his personal life. But even as he suffered through some of the cruelest of times, Paul continued to make us forget our troubles and was forever gracious to his fans. This is the book those fans have been waiting for. Though he was one of the most original, hilarious, and private actor-comedians of all time, author Cathy Rudolph, his trusted friend, reveals her adventures with Paul - along with his turbulent life story. Here for the first time are interviews with his relatives and personal notes. Also included are memories from his friends and peers including Cloris Leachman, Chita Rivera, Florence Henderson, Kaye Ballard, Peter Marshall, Les Roberts, Betty White, and many more.
    Critic Reviews:
"I've been saying for 40 years that Paul Lynde could deliver a punchline better than any other comedian. I look forward to having the book on my library shelf." (Les Roberts, novelist, first producer, and head writer of the original Hollywood Squares)
    Members Reviews:
The recording/editing was pretty choppy and weird
The recording/editing was pretty choppy and weird for the first hour or so. The narration suffered because of this.
The narrator has Lynde's voice down pat.
The story seemed rushed (maybe because of the editing) and not well researched. I got to the part where Paul died and it was like "...and then he died and had a funeral. The End."
    Okay Bio, needs facts checking
Paul was not in Nutty Professor but in Son of Flubber sequel to Abs Minded Professor. Montgomery died in 1995 not 1955.
A "G" rated book about an "R" rated man.
What would have made Paul Lynde: A Biography better?
More facts that were not watered down. She made him out a saint and we all know he was very mean when he was drunk. She also glossed over his death and made it out to be that he died in his sleep when it is well known he died having sex and whoever was with him ran out of the place and did not stop to call for help for Paul. It was also very clear that she did not like his being gay and put in a ton of stories that he wanted women.
Would you ever listen to anything by Cathy Rudolph again?
    Probably not.
How could the performance have been better?
Stop doing the bad Paul Lynde imitations and just read the damn book.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment that she did not write the whole story and that makes me wonder how truthful she was about any of her facts.
    Any additional comments?
Don't waste your time with this fantasy tale of a very funny but troubled man.
A Swell Read & And A Swell Hear!
If you could sum up Paul Lynde: A Biography in three words, what would they be?
    Touching. Poignant. Informative.
Who was your favorite character and why?
    Paul Lynde
Which character as performed by Susan Scher was your favorite?
    Paul Lynde
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes
    Any additional comments?
The book was well written and interesting, and the audio as recited by Susan Scher is terrific! Ms. Scher is well spoken and she has a charming way of mimicking Paul Lynde's distinct voice.
    It's a fine audio edition.

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 22 mins

    Publisher: kathy garver

Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Celebrity Bios
    Publisher's Summary:
Kathy Garver, the teenage heartthrob from the hit series Family Affair (1966 - 1971), was no one-hit wonder, but a talented actress who appeared in such classic films as Night of the Hunter and The Ten Commandments long before she became a television icon.
This memoir is a recollection of an exciting actress's experiences, from the many films, television shows, and stage plays in which she performed, to her second career as a voice-over specialist in popular animated films and audiobooks. Featuring anecdotes, Hollywood history, and details of her relationships with such stars as Charlton Heston and Jon Provost, Surviving Cissy is a veritable quilt of Kathy's intriguing life.

    I COULDN'T FINISH THIS
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
    An editor
Would you recommend Surviving Cissy: My Family Affair of Life in Hollywood to your friends? Why or why not?
No, it REALLY needed an editor. Way too wordy and disorganized. "But more about (fill in the blank) later!" Annoying.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Yes! I'm sure she reads fiction well, she's a trained actress and her voice is pleasant and diction crisp and clear. That being said, she was just insufferably pompous and pretentious in this voice over...take the stick out of your butt, lady! Her pronunciations of French words especially...whew!
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Boredom. I don't think we needed a chapter on ALL her high school friends, their biographies, illnesses and other details. I'm sorry if they died of cancer or whatever, but do I really need to read in so much detail about people I don't know? Snore. What I LOVED, were the show business stories...she worked with so many icons in both movies and television. I've always been a fan of Brian Keith and...my goodness, DeMille, Charles Laughton, Robert Mitchum, Ida Lupino, et al. Those are the stories that kept me interested. Not her friend in junior high who had heat rash, became an insurance salesman and now lives in in Pacoima!
    Any additional comments?
"Family Affair" was part of American TV culture at a time when sitcoms were whitewashed and simpler. I'm OK with that...TV is an evolution and there were sponsor and censorship constraints at the time. But this wasn't a ground breaker classic like "I Love Lucy," this was a average, albeit successful, family sitcom that ran its course and gives one a good chuckle at the naivete of the plots. Times may have been changin' in the 60s, but sitcoms remained vanilla, until the brilliant Norman Lear and "All in the Family" burst on the scene in the early 70s and changed the landscape of television forever.
    Snooze fest.
Although Kathy sounds like a sweet lady her life as she wrote it was a long boring story. It gets somewhat better around chapter 46. Buy at your own risk.
    Kathy's Memories of Hollywood
Good collection of anecdotes from classic tv era. Kathy is very likeable and a determined survivor of Hollywood. She overlooks the dark side of life and raises her head in joy.

What disappointed you about Natalie Wood?
Every few paragraphs we get a diatribe of how Natalie's mother was connected to Russian Aristocracy. The story line jumps back and forth so much and drops names that it is confusing and hard to follow if Natalie is 8 or 14 at the time.
What do you think your next listen will be?
    back to fiction
How did the narrator detract from the book?
mans voice on a woman's story not good
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
