Where does I Love the Illusion rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

It's a good bio of a radio, film and television star of the 30's - 60's, illuminating the back story of a well-known actress who apparently revealed little of her personal life throughout her career.

What did you like best about this story?

For someone who primarily knew Moorehead as Endora on Bewitched & as the mother at the very beginning of Citizen Kane, it was really interesting to learn of her much earlier success in radio and the stage in the 30's 40's & 50's.

What didnt you like about Angie Dillard Brayfields performance?

1. She was very weak; one of the most unskilled performers I have heard in the last 50 Audible books.

2. There were perhaps 30 or 40 times that she stopped and repeated, that were not edited out. On 2 occasions you can hear the audio producer giving her instructions and these were pretty basic instructions reflecting how he must have struggled to extract a decent performance.

3. There were dozens of times when the pitch of her voice or the audio background or the volume changed markedly after a sentence or even a phrase, indicating an edit and been done.

4. Although not unpleasant to listen to, I would not listen to a book performed by Brayfield again

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, it was great to listen to over a week. I was able to call up a few of Moorhead's performances on Youtube and incorporate that experience as the story unfolded.

Audible should go back to the supplier and ask for this to be re-edited.

Always loved Agnes Moorehead!

While I have always been a great fan of Agnes Moorehead, this book was a little disappointing. Not for the story, but it was the narration. I feel the narrator Angie Dillard Brayfield was an awful choice to read this audiobook. Her voice at times sounds ok, but then at times, it sounds like it is the automated voice from my cell phone. It sounds so monotone. I love the story, and learning more about Agnes. This book would have been so much better with a different narrator. "AUDIBLE 20 REVIEW SWEEPSTAKES ENTRY"

Sloppiest production I've ever listened to

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The life of Agnes Moorehead is interesting enough, but the production is embarrassingly bad.

What could Charles Tranberg have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I would have liked more about the two Douglas Sirk films that she's in.

I Love Alicia Vikander â as an Actress. She Gets Nine Glorious Pages of Photos

I fell in love with Alicia Vikander from the movies, natch. She gets NINE (yes, nine) glorious pages of photos in this issue of Vanity Fair. All are glamour shots (with clothes, shucks). She, of course -- looks gorgeous in each of âem, so I thought Iâd at least describe them for you (further below).

But first, the history of my relationship with Alicia â through her movies. Spoiler alert: I give away all of the plot points from here, so beware.

My first exposure to Alicia was in the movie âEx Machina.â She plays a robot (yes, robot) who gets involved in a sort of love triangle â with two guys, both of whom are badly casted. I say that â because neither of the gents is very likeable (or maybe that was the point). Alicia, the robot â eventually wants her freedom and kills both of them cleverly (at the end of the movie) to get it. Unfortunately, for Alicia, the only part of her shown on the robot was her beautiful face. (She has no hair and the rest of her mechanical body is computer generated.) So the amount of emotionality she could bring to the role was limited, and the director had her play the character very straight (as a basically emotionless robot). I didnât realize until months later (after I had seen the movie) who she was. Unfortunately, the film had a predictable script â and was mainly built around Aliciaâs cool CGI representation. Too bad.

My next film was where I fell in love with Alicia â for her acting ability â where she appears in a little known art-house production called âThe Testament of Youth.â She plays a British woman coming of age in the time at the start of the First World War. To make a long story short, everyone sheâs close to (four men) all die in the war. They are her fiancé, her brother, and two other close friends. Before they perish, Aliciaâs character insists on participating in the war, so she becomes a nurse and is sent to the front â where, serendipitously, her brother ends up in her hospital, given up for dead â and she saves his life. (It is one of the more touching episodes in the film.) She nurses him back to health â only for him to be killed later in Italy. (The family is notified via a bicycled messenger.) Her fiancé dies (while fixing barbed wire, as told to her by an officer she tracks down) right when they are about to be married. She is almost literally left at the altar. (Another touching scene.) Her two other friends die of their wounds suffered in the conflict. After the war, Aliciaâs character becomes a peace activist â one of the first of her kind â and writes a best-selling book, upon which this movie is based.

Nice but very short

I read this memoir a long time ago, but I'm pretty sure this is an abridged version. It just includes the highlights of their relationship. I'm not sure why she stayed so long or continued to love him given the troubles in their marriage.

Flawed Hero

I've heard that drugs and success changed Steve and ruined his marriage. This book confirms that. Too old at the time - Steve still chased the hippie lifestyle and screwed his brains out from 1964-70. Then he lost his mind when Nellie admitted to a one night stand. Very sad. I thought the message and the points being made were excellent and I appreciated this book. What I could not stand was the fact that the book uses the word "moreover" about 600 times. It was so frequent, I couldn't finish listening. It was literally like listening to a Saturday Night Live skit. Very sad.

Everything you wanted to know about Ann Blyth

What made the experience of listening to Ann Blyth the most enjoyable?

I really enjoyed listening to Jacqueline T. Lynch's new book on Ann Blyth - expertly narrated by Toni Lewis, who manages to blend in well with the material.

I have to admit that I'd only known Ann Blyth from her musicals - although I was aware she was nominated as best supporting actress for Mildred Pierce (1945) - a film I haven't seen (shame, I hear you cry!). I was surprised to learn of all the 'non musicals' . And doubly surprised later to hear her voice had been dubbed for the musical-drama The Helen Morgan Story!

As has been noted by other reviewers, the book is very detailed - and long at 18hrs. I have to confess, as someone mostly interested in her film career, that I skipped most of the pre-Hollywood material and went straight to the chapters just leading up to when her acting career began. But I think you can read the book any way that suits you and the rest can be a reference or you can dip in and out, as I did, and still very much enjoy the experience.

Naturally, I enjoyed the chapters on her musicals! (in addition to other chapters such as the ones on Mildred Pierce, making The Helen Morgan Story, and The Buster Keaton Story with Ann and Donald O'Connor) and the backstory to them, including on Mario Lanza, Edmund Purdom and many of the stars and studios of 'old Hollywood'.

Ann Blyth comes across as a thoroughly decent down-to earth person. I read a book about Marilyn Monroe recently - how Hollywood destroyed her and the pain and suffering that came with each success and failure. Ann Blyth is the complete opposite and handled Hollywood with the confidence of someone who knew who she was and what she was prepared to pay for fame, which had to fall in with her beliefs and morals. The surprising thing is she set her own boundaries (no pin-ups, for example) without fuss and they were respected.

Despite the wholesomeness, the author manages to make her a very interesting character. She wasn't without ambition but it didn't blind her to the feelings of others. She treated everyone on a film set with respect and was as friendly to the extras as she was to her co-stars.

The book makes you want to watch more of her films (Mildred Pierce is on the list!).

The book is all right. Nothing new.

The book is all right. Nothing new. Basically, it's a must-have if you're doing research material. But nothing more than that. I think younger readers would like the book more so than the others, since there aren't as many pages as an adult biography (although I will say there are -- aside from the book cover -- no photographs to show, which I guess would turn away some readers).

SWISH! Yet another fantastic book of explaining the lifestyles and background information. This book exlained to me not only what Pistol Pete had to go through during his life, but the way basketball shown years before. For example, the three point line wasn't even there! It made me think of much more amazing he could have been with a line in front of him. Were talking Klay and Curry style here! Lastly, this book, and every other one, shows how he finished his life. For example, he was a drunkard and iny opinion probably had suicidal thoughts through that and his parents death. But, changed his ways and took the path of righteousness and heaven, God.I would never have even guessed this is what he had done in his life.
